2 comments about Dangerhouse, Vol. 1.
- Dangerhouse is simply the best punk label ever. Why they chose to split this into two volumes- I don't know. It could have all fit on one cd as I believe each cd is about 28 minutes long. But whatever. Buy both to be safe. More artwork to look at that way. I can tell you if you're into punk and you get this one, you're surely gonna gonna want the other one and wish you had bought them both at the same time. I wish Howard Werth's other song from his 7" was on here. I've been wanting to hear that forever but that 7" is so high priced since it's a Dangerhouse release and very collectable. Vol. 1 of the Dangerhouse series is worth the price alone for Lets Get Rid of NY by Randoms. That song is one of the best and catchiest punk songs I've personally ever heard. I must have listened to it 150 times by now. I could stick that on repeat and listen to it all day and never get sick of it. Everything else on here is solid as can be. If you're into punk at all or curious I can't imagine you not liking this. All the bands sound different and have their own style. That's the glory about the early days of punk and things weren't all serious like they are today. This is fun music. This is some of the best stuff to ever come out of punk and everyone knows '77 had the best punk to ever be created. Even though I own about 1200+ punk records I still listen to this cd on a regular basis. Probably at least a couple times every two weeks. You just can't go wrong with Dangerhouse. They're just the all-time coolest. The definition of cool. If only all those studded-jacket kids (which I once was) would start listening to this stuff rather than The Exploited and The Casualties, the world would be much better off. But the street punk scene just keeps getting larger and larger based off fashion and image while the real punk of '77 (the best punk) goes unheard. It saddens me to no end. I guess it has a lot to do with being young and not knowing a lot about punk history besides what you see on the backs of other mohawked punks' jackets at shows. This record and vol. 2 as well as the first few Killed By Death (KBD) compilations really changed me. They got me into a million other cool old underground and unknown punk/diy/post-punk bands and into all types of punk music I never would have never thought about listening to before. Thanks Dangerhouse!! I'll love you until my dying day.
- Man, there are some classic songs here for sure - But what a rip-off - Less than 30 minutes of music here on a CD fer crapsakes - So why didn'cha include the great B-sides from these 45's? (like Black Randy's "Loner with a Boner" & "Sperm Bank Baby") - Oh yeah, then you woulda hadda buy the rights to those songs, too, cutting into the profits you'd make on this collection... Yeah, whatever, my friend burned me a copy of this so it's not like I hadda pay for it...

5 comments about Everything Is Nice Matador Records.
- anyone reading this should try to get their hands on a 10 year anniversary copy of the real "everything is nice", released in march 97.you know they bit that title!
- The second of Matador's compilations features 2 CDs of old material and 1 CD of previously unreleased songs from great artists like Pavement, Cat Power, Chavez, Modest Mouse, Mogwai, Yo La Tengo, Sleater Kinney, Guided by Voices and Boards of Canada. The best two new songs from Disc 3 made it onto subsequent Pavement and Cat Power releases, respectively. All three of the Matador comps are packed with dozens of good songs at a single CD price and strongly recommended for new fans.
- The tracks on this look like a collage radio play list!!!!! You got THE best in underground rock/Folk/Pop all in One cd. If YOU like good underground (Not that stuff that passes for rock these days) Then buy this.
- I owe a debt to Matador Records' "Everything Is Nice" compilation,. It was through these three discs that I was originally introduced to many of my now-favorite bands, including Solex, Nightmares on Wax, Pizzicato Five, Pavement, Yo La Tengo, and many others.
But enough of reminiscing. "Everything Is Nice" was a tenth anniversary collection of many of their best bands, originally released in 1999. (They've since released a fifteenth anniversary collection. Only four more years til we get a twentieth). It's not only a good cross-section of the best and most timeless work here, but also a fun listen, and a good introduction to some good music.
Several indie-rock staples were signed onto Matador over the years, and they are given places of honor: the gone-but-never-forgotten Pavement, excellent Guided by Voices and Modest Mouse, as well as other outstanding bands like Mogwai, Cat Power, Sleator-Kinney and Yo La Tengo. Often these bands get more than one song.
But Matador also gives the spotlight to lesser known bands and artists. For example, the ultra-creative Cornelius and Japanese pop band Pizzicato Five, the swipping beats of Jega, fuzzed-out chords of Bardo Pond, and chilled-out grooves of Nightmares on Wax. There's also the quirkiness of Solex, electronic tsunami of VOID, sped-up hip-hop of the Arsonists and Non Phixion, the mellow keyboard of Mary Timony, and the danceable beats of Khan.
Okay, sprinkled here and there are a few duds. I have to admit that Chavez is not my favorite -- I can only take a few explosive chords at a time, unless Billy Corgan is playing them. However, those few songs are overshadowed by the excellent -- sometimes ingenious -- music that surrounds them on all sides. Pop, electronica, rock, hard-rock, experimental -- it's all here.
While Matador plays it safe to some degree, with a little of everything (as well as their best bands) that has been most popular for them, they also include some less conventional songs, such as Cornelius's dizzying "Count Five or Six," or the grimy, bare rock of Unwound's "NO TECH!" Neither is really pretty or catchy, but they are definitely compelling.
I'll admit it -- I have a soft spot for this tenth-anniversary collection, since it kicked me into my present love of music. And for those investigating the best bands never (or at least rarely) seen on MTV, this is an ideal springboard.
- As a follow up to the first Everything is Nice - this newest of Matador compilations features some pleasant new music to enjoy. Running the spectrum from Pavement with two quite nice songs (including an alternate version of Grounded which is, in many ways, better than the original) to the always pleasing Boards of Canada hit Roygbiv and the flash in the pan Burger/Ink - there is almost certainly something for everyone here. And with three discs for under twenty dollars, it's hard to go wrong with this purchase. I could have done without some of the Arab Strap and Bardo Pond songs - but once again, something for everyone.

5 comments about The Duran Duran Tribute Album.
- It's actually pretty simple. The songs speak for themselves. Anyone who won't admit Duran Duran being one of the greatest pop bands ever and recognizing Simon's talent for melody writing has to reconsider the overall parameters with which one judges. Even the bands that conceptualised this tribute album, which they did for an exact reason, didn't come close to style and beauty with their own songs compared to DD.
Pier
- I'm a real die hard fan of Duran Duran and I welcome any good tribute albums that may come along (after all, DD had their own tribute album with "Thank You"!) but if you have any taste in music whatsoever, you will leave this plastic waste alone. I was on the edge of buying the C.D, but after a quick taster of the tracks, I was disgusted. None of the songs had the same spirit as the originals and most of the songs are sung by punk bands that sing the track out of synch and at double speed! I agree remakes should be crafted into the style of the band remaking the tracks, but they should be done with passion, experience and commitment at least (Take "White Lines" by DD!) I was really let down by the great songs on offer, ruined without consideration for real DD fans like myself. They don't even sound like the originals!
I wish it was good, but it wasn't. Thank You!
- This is one of my favorite tribute cd's because the bands (in most cases) truly make the songs their own rather than covering the same old version. 'Rio'and 'Hungry Like the Wolf' stand out and are campy and fun. Not sure if hardened Duran fans would agree but I think this is proof the songs hold up on their own.
- This is a very FUN tribute album. If you are a serious, die hard Duran Duranie, you probably won't like this (or any other tribute album dedicated to Duran Duran). However, for the rest of us, this has a bunch of creative interpretations of these great songs. I bought the CD for Goldfinger's version of Rio (which includes a hilarious 30 second break into Dio's `Rainbow in the Dark'). Other very good renditions come from Jimmy Eat World (New Religon), the Deftones (the Chauffeur), and Less than Jake (The Reflex).
The album is very reminescint of 80's hair bands with some songs that rock out, with an occasional power ballad. It won't be the best album you ever buy, but it's a good time.
- Personally, i think the strongest song would have to be by the one unsigned band on the CD; Come Undone by WiseCrack, this song rawkZ!!!

- I really enjoy listening to this CD. I only gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because of two things: on the CD i had no idea what song i was missing, since it only had 18 song names for 19 songs (the missing song was Perestroiska); and at least 1 of the songs i do not deem so much as music, as much as mindless noise. The songs that *are* musical are excellent, and varied- unlike the rest of the music industry.

2 comments about State of the Union: D.C. Benefit Compilation.
- I bought this CD because it featured songs from many D.C. bands that don't have records in print any more such as RAIN, and KINGFACE. I was not disapointed. Highlights of the compilation (for me) are Anger Means by Ignition, Worlds at War by Rain, and the acoustic Swan Street by Three. Some of the music is pretty poor, but it is easily made up for by the power and intensity most of these bands perform with. It is difficult to find music like this anymore. Get a copy before it goes out of print.
- If you are wondering what the DC scene was like back in the late 80s and early 90s pick up this comp. Its an incredible slice of the scene at that time and represents some of the best emo/punk bands on the East Coast. A couple of the songs don't appeal to me but the tracks by Ignition, SoulSide, Marginal Man, and Fire Party stand out. When this came out I picked up a copy and played it constantly for months. Even now, 11 years later, I still break it out every few months and listen to it with the same excitement I did then.

- There is new material, or unreleased/live material from every band on this compilation, and seeing as how it has delivered bands like Alkaline Trio Thursday Hot Water Music Boy Sets Fire etc, it deserves some recognition. Simply buy it.
- This really is one of my favorite cd's. So much diverstiy and good music on one cd - it's quite novel. There's like 2 songs that I'm not sure how the eff they got on here (like the zero zero song - it's too techno-ish for me) but the rest of the cd makes up for the not as great songs. It's one of those cds you throw in your car when you haveta drive far (man - that rhymed) and don't want to worry about changing the music. Every song is at least listen-to-able if not extremely awesome. The best in my opinion? Boy Sets Fire, At the Drive-in, Thursday, Good Riddance, AFI, Thrice (some of my favorite bands, the songs on here are a good representation of their music). The let downs? OK, actually I'm fully in love with most of the cd. I think they throw in the few not as good songs to keep it from god-level or people like me might start worshipping the cd (well maybe not...). It's a good buy. Really. I wouldn't lie to you. Buy it.
- I've grown a great respesct for Sub City as of late... they're one of the few record labels out there that aren't about just making muisc. making music is great, but making it with a purpose is even better. If you thought you'd get a better circle of musicians together, you were wrong when you bought this comp. It's not the BEST Sub City take action comp, but it features so many good bands that if you never heard the original Take Action compilation you'd have thought so. This compilation single-handedly turned me back to punk rock, and even though it's a little poppier than my original punk tastes, it gave me a broader view of what good punk can be. And this is good punk rock.
- this comp is good , diverse , and has alot of new stuff , so its not like when you get a punk o roma and you have half the songs on it on cd already or whatnot. i was kinda disapointed in the swingin utters song, but thats about it , its good but not as good as i would have liked , atom and his package is great as usual . anyway buy this cd , its good stuff , my favorites were Alkaline Trio, Cave In, Thrice , Atom and his package , ATDI , Suicide Machines , The Ataris , Grade , Bratmobile, Selby Tigers , ah well anyway basically all the bands and all are awesome , with the exclusion of boy sets fire and dillinger escape plan , so buy this cd . thats all , its awesome
- I haven't actually listened to this specific cd but I don't have to hear it to know that this is one of the best groups of artists ever compiled together on a single cd. A lot of my favorite bands are on here (AFI, At the Drive In, Good Riddance, Dillinger Escape Plan, Thrice, The International Noise Conspiracy, Swingin' Utters, Boy Sets Fire, and Link 80). The Ataris is also very good, even though they are a little too emo/pop for me and the Alkaline Trio used to be among my favorites until they stupidly decided to open for Blink 182, the worst band in the history of music, and I lost all respect for them. This cd mixes a lot of different styles. It has everything from hardcore ska (Link 80) to emo/"lite" punk (The Ataris) to older-school punk (T.S.O.L.) Most of the bands on here are great, although it has a few that I don't particularly like (Atom and His Package, Thursday, and Hot Water Music, to be specific). There are probably only 4 or 5 songs out of the 28 that I would skip over. If your a fan of punk, especially one that likes most types of punk, than this is a good buy.

2 comments about Skankaholics Unanimous: Under the Influence of Ska.
- This is THE best Ska comp out there. It'll make you remember why you listen to Ska; good music, skankin' and booze! This is the top shelf. The Pietasters doing 'gin and tonic' is a must for those post-relationship blues. The Skoidats' track 'last night' proves that Oi! and Ska go great together, if you've never heard of em check em out. This comp made me want to get up and dance and there's not a single weak track. If you're going to own a comp this and Give em the Boot vol 1 are the two I would suggest. A must have!
- these guys are the best but i still luv Ednas goldfish for The son of ska this is on my top ten it makes the listener just beg for more!

5 comments about Ska Sucks.
- A solid SKA album for any fan. The beginning tracks are better than the later ones but overall this one's a winner- a nice compilation of SKA music.
Ordered this product from Amazon warehouse deals- great price, arrived quickly and item as described.
- I have to give this one a four because I feel that the songs in the middle of the disc kind of drag, and are not the best choices, but the first 10 and the last 6 or so are some of the best punk/ska songs I've heard. They have assembled recordings from some of the best small name bands, and gotten a few real small bands best recordings. This is a disc I think all ska fans will enjoy, since there is a wide variety of styles represented, some more than others. I recommend this cd to all fans of ska music.
- this cd is awesome. everysong on it gets you in the mood to skank the night away. the ltj remix of we go together sounds totally cool. props to them for taking a generic 50's song and making it into their own thing. everything else sounds good too. im just getting into third wave ska and this cd rox my world. a must buy for skankers and rudies.
- It takes a little while to get into, but it pays off. The first song is very nice and catchy, and it just gets better from there. Some of the best songs are by Mu330, The Usuals, Millencolin, The Chinkees, Mustard Plug and Unsteady. The trumpet solo in The Homeless Wonders' song is one of my favorite, and the trombone solo in JFC's Dream Girl just blew me away. The Hippos' song is great too (I have both of their cds, though, so I occasionaly skip it.) Also, the Johnny Socko song (though short and odd,) is very funny, as is Mephishapheles' tune. The Hepcat song, tough, is definitely a notch below their other work, and the rx bandits song is pretty lame. Ocean 11's song (if you want to call it that) really, really sucks. The Impossibles song is pretty lame too, but Liberator's catchy tune covers for that. Congrats to LTJ for taking a crappy Grease song, and making it sound really awesome. Definitely something worth checking out, especially if you're just getting into 3rd wave. If you're already a big ska fan, I'd suggest not picking it up unless you like a lot of the bands on here.
- this cd is so great its insane you have to get it. its got everything from less than jake to mu330. its got alot of great bands that you probably never heard of. i dont think theres one bad song on it. but it could have reel big fish on it but oh well. BUY IT.

5 comments about Shaken & Stirred: The David Arnold James Bond Project.
- Don't believe the bad reviews. This a great album, with lush arrangements that respect the original version but add another view. All Time High by Pulp is really sublime as well as the orchestrations of Moonraker and the Space Themes. If you know by heart the original James Bond's themes you will really appreciate this album. I wish there was a second album!
- This CD must be on a "need to know basis" because I sure don't get it. I do not understand the mission of David Arnold's James Bond Project. I do not understand the point of the music. There's a lot of sound, some noise, some melody and I can't even describe the rest. How could this CD come from the same person who composed the scores for TOMORROW NEVER DIES, THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH and DIE ANOTHER DAY ? I hope his score for CASINO ROYALE (2006) will be good.
- When I first heard this CD a long time ago in a galaxy far far away... I knew I was destined to purchase it. The Composistion from David Arnold is fantastic! Whenever I play the CD in my quality Personal Computer I realize how much I enjoy this music. If you need to relax, if your in the mood for adventure, if you have a vehicle with a CD player and a long stretch of road to cruise down, then listening to this music is a must. Go Bond GO! Thumbs up to David Arnold and his crew. Great product!
- I bought this not having listened to any tracks at all, but had read that some of the tracks were great (especially the Propellorheads's one)
My goodness...this disk has, after a couple of listens, entered my never-to-be-played category! Most of the covers are horrid. Nobody Does It Better was good, except for the LP-like scratching that is clear at the beginning (at least on my disk which is not actually scratched!) The James Bond Theme is worse than execrable. Bears almost no resemblance to the fantastic original! The only track that's okay is Iggy Pop's 'All the time in world' mainly coz it doesn't try to be too different to the original. All in all, I can't believe anyone released this (let alone the composer of the recent Bond movies). What a disgrace to the original music of the great John Barry and Monty Norman. I'm a huge fan of Bond movies, especially their music (apart from the last few films). I enjoy remixes and some techno style music as well, but this album is awful. The listenable tracks are the ones closest to the original (except for reversing the gender of the singer!).
- If any CD cried out to be released in high-res audio, it's this one. You may have heard a couple of these songs on the Propellerhead's CD (History Repeating) or on the radio. But this is the type of complex electronic music just tailor-made for SACD or DVD-Audio, which despite the failure of the music industry to promote properly, sounds amazing. Wait and see. They'll put this one out again. It's guaranteed $$.
