5 comments about Punk-O-Rama, Vol. 8.

  1. "Decent-songs-that-you-should-hear-O-RAMA" is an awkward title & these discs have some punk. The songs that do not fit into the genre in no way affect the flow of the music and are strong musically. I am always looking for music outside of my typical spectrum & I'm glad this damn good compilation widened my view. Most of my music is hardcore & I never touch the radio so... I have 4 new & fun CDs from artists unknown to me prior to P-O-R 8.

  2. I dont get why this got so many bad reviews.Sure its not exactly Punk but it does have a few quality tracks and for 15$ for 33 tracks whos complaining. This Compilation features some of "modern"punks most high profile bands Rancid,NOFX,Bad Religion,Pennywise,Millencolin,Tiger Army,No fun at all.But its not all good,God knows what the Hell Epitaph were thinking when they signed Matchbook Romance. If your a fan of Epitaph bands its probably worth the small price,If you are a punk "purist"this will just infuriate you.

  3. This is the poorest collection of "punk" songs I have ever seen put together, if you are looking for a real punk compilation rather than the trash you hear on the radio AND the trash produced by labels such as Epitaph who are just as much in it for the money then buy something like "100% Hardcore Punk" (goto www.interpunk.com). Only settle for buying a compilation if it is the last thing you do! Most of the songs on the punk-o-rama series are not even remotely punk anyway; a lot of what is put onto the compilations is emo just to sell the record to a wider audience. Sod that for a laugh, emo is not punk; emo goes against almost everything punk is for. Musically, I'm sure it's great (!) but as the majority of people reviewing this album are saying "buy it because it's so much more punk than anything you've bought before" I will review on this basis aswell. Buy some A Global Threat, Aus-Rotten, Unseen or Crass and get into some real punk rock rather than this garbage produce for MTV2.

  4. I just got this punk o rama from a friend, and its not a very good cd at all, in fact, it sucks.
All the bands that were good are getting horrible and who puts rap on a punk cd? its not rap-o-rama.
The best punk o rama is the one with TSOL's code blue on it, in my opinion.
Check out some of these bands older stuff, you will like it a lot more

  5. i thought this cd was one of the best out. it gives people a good idea of what punk is sure it has some songs on it that arnt as punk as the other one but o well i like it i especially like that matchbook romance song cuz it has screaming in it and its about love and stuff but hey its just my opinion but i say go out and buy it you wont regret it.

3 comments about Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits Of The '80s, Vol. 3.

  1. As these discs go, #3 is fairly packed with goodies, some you've heard enough to make your bowels move, and some that are pretty cool surprises. Gary Numan's "Cars" kicks things off and sounds a lot better than I remember it sounding. Maybe I'm mellowing. The B-52's "Private Idaho", "What I Like About You" by The Romantics and Squeeze's "Tempted" all fit into the "heard it a million times" category, but since they're all pretty cool songs I decided to give them a pass. The most pleasant surprises on this volume are Rockpile's "Teacher Teacher" and "88 Lines About 44 Women" by The Nails. Uncovering nuggets like these are what makes this collection fun.

  2. This and Vol 5 are the best in the series. This is a good reflection of the diversity and talent of many of the 80's best. Many of the bands here had lenghty careers (XTC, Squeeze) while others made the most of thier 15 minutes of fame. How great to hear Visages "Fade To Grey" and Kid Creoles "Stool Pigeon" again. Great c.d., I highly recommend it.

  3. Unlike the other CDs in this series, every cut is a gem! Well known classics like "Cars", "Private Idaho" and "Teacher, Teacher" are combined with less well known (at least to me) equally great songs like "88 Lines", "Stool Pigeon" and especially "I Live in the City". I own vol 1-7 and 13; this is the best!

2 comments about Acoustic, Vol. 2.

  1. I thought this is a good compilation of tunes from mostly british artists not normally heard on the airwaves. value for money.

  2. I thought that all the songs would be the acoustic version of the original song, as the title of the CD indicates, but that was not the case. The music selection was horrible, and they're the original songs - not acoustic. False advertising, horrible CD. I'm returning it.

3 comments about Kicked Outta Purgatory...Psychobilly.

  1. If your definition of "psychobilly" is something along the lines of "loud & fast hardcore punk with a standup bass somewhere in the mix," you'll probably like this compilation just fine.

If, like me, you appreciate traditional rockabilly music AND you also appreciate new takes on those classic themes, you may (like I was) be let down by this CD. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of bands like the Meteors, the Cramps, the Quakes, the Amazing Crowns, Rev. Horton Heat, Th' Legendary Shack Shakers, and others along those lines -- bands that start with the basic themes and motifs of rockabilly music and take them in new directions.

The problem I have with a lot (though not all) of the songs on this collection is that they seem to be the type of "psychobilly" where you just yell really loud (always with a stereotypical gravelly voice) and play really fast, without much melody or muscianship to speak of, and give it the suffix "-billy" primarily because of the upright bass, despite the fact that the overall sound has almost NOTHING to do with rockabilly. (Not to mention, a lot of the songs -- though by different bands -- sound THE SAME on this album. The Meteors were cool because they were ORIGINAL -- in constrast, 3rd-generation Meteors wannabes just don't cut it for me.)

Sorry -- but despite a few good songs, overall this album doesn't quite do it for me. I'll give it three stars because of the handful of good songs that are present.

  2. I was introduced to psychobilly through this CD, and comtributes to some of my favorite bands. Koffin Kats, Encombre Zombie, Mad Sin, Hayride to Hell, Nekromantix, etc!!! Good comp with good attitude. I reccomend it to those who dig the music. Its not expensive, pick up a copy today!

  3. Kicked Outta Purgatory is a wonderful introductory to Physcobilly and all of its wonders. The tracks are well spread out and new comers may stick to safer grounds and stay on the first ten tracks for a while but eventually will move on. With tracks from such artists as The HorrorPops, 12 step Rebels, Koffin Katz, and Mad sin it is definitly a must have for someone looking to expand their musical tastes.

5 comments about Punk Rock Christmas.

  1. Tired of hearing what he heard, stupid damn bell songs, and white christmas? You need this albulm. Make the season sound like you feel it.

  2. This review is written more for the parent looking for something to buy their punk musically inclined offspring for Christmas. Nutshelling it - if someone likes punk music, they will like this CD. So if you are looking for a Christmas gift for the hard to buy for - this should fill their stockings with glee.

It is a great XMAS album for punk rock fans and any one else with a sense of humor; you do need a sense of humor for some songs especially Homo Christmas which isn't exactly Bing Crosby (although do people still mosh pit? I am pretty uncool). Anyway, this is just what it says - A Punk Rock XMAS album. There are a lot of rockin songs from right off the start, with It's Gonna Be A Punk Rock Christmas by the Ravers to the final version of White Christmas.

  3. This is a pretty good collection of punk Christmas songs. It opens with a fun novelty song that is not by a real punk band. Then we move on to the real punks. The quality of the material varies, but some of the best cuts are contributed by the Dickies, Sloppy Seconds, the Greedies and (naturally) the Ramones. But my personal favorite here is "Homo Christmas" by Pansy Division, which is hilarious. I have to mention the contributions by a couple of guys who are not usually associated with the punk genre. El Vez, the "Mexican Elvis", performs a surprisingly credible thrash punk version of "Feliz Navidad". And Mojo Nixon performs an unsurprisingly sloppy rewrite of "Louie Louie" called "Christmas Christmas". It's not really punk, and it's not really good. It sounds like an outtake from Mojo's lousy Christmas album, although it's not. If you are a fan of punk, especially "old school" punk, you should enjoy this.

  4. 1. The Ravers - "(It's Gonna be a) Punk Rock Christmas"
    2. The Dickies - "Silent Night"
    3. Sloppy Seconds - "Hooray for Santa Claus"
    4. Fear - "Fvck Christmas"
    5. The Greedies - "A Merry Jingle"
    6. The Damned - "There Ain't No Sanity Claus"
    7. Pansy Division - "Homo Christmas"
    8. Bouquet of Veal - "It's Christmas"
    9. The Celibate Rifles - "Merry Xmas Blues"
    10. The Ramones - "Merry Christmas (I Don't Wanna Fight Tonight)" [UK Single Version]
    11. Metal Mike, Alison & Julia - "Deck the Halls"
    12. El Vez - "Feliz Navi-Nada"
    13. The Humpers - "Run, Run Rudolph"
    14. TVTV$ - "Daddy Drank Our Xmas Money"
    15. The Frogs - "Here Comes Santa's Pussy"
    16. Mojo Nixon - "Christmas Christmas"
    17. D.I. - "Mr. Grinch"
    18. Stiff Little Fingers - "White Christmas"

  5. OK. Pretend you're over twenty, you live alone, nobody invited you to their christmas party, and no girl will get in ten feet of your apartment. And the last thing you want to hear are jingly carols shrieked out by happy little orphans. What you need is to hear jingly carols shrieked out by your favorite punk bands! Yesindeedee (Ramone, that is). So decorate the tree with empty beer cans, write your name in the snow, hang up that mistleto and soon you'll hear ho-ho-ho!

This is the only Xmas album you can play even when it ain't the season. Especially "Daddy Drank Our Christmas Money" by TVTV$ (if anybody knows how the hell you're supposed to pronounce that band's name, please e-mail me), Pansy Division's "Homo Christmas" (wait 'til you hear it!), The Dickies hilariously awful variation of "Silent Night" and of course the Ramones' I-don't-wanna-fight-on-Christmas jingle.

Have a weary Christmas and a sloppy New Year!!!

5 comments about Rock Against Bush, Vol. 2 (Bonus DVD).

  1. I bought this because i love punk rock and would financially support anything that promised to make life harder for GWB. This isn't as good overall as the Vol. 1, but it's got some good tracks on it. Particularly good: "Favorite Son" (Green Day), "Let The Eat War" (Bad Religion), and "We Got The Power" (Dropkick Murphys). All in all, a solid album supporting a good cause.

  2. What? Why is everyone so mad?

The point of this disc is to put out a certain viewpoint. If you don't agree with that viewpoint, then what are you doing looking at this disc? Are you looking for trouble? Is your self-esteem so low that you have to stoop to the level of a middle schooler, and attack people online anonymously?

As far as the CD itself goes... for a compiliation disc, it isn't that bad. Look at what you get: Green Day, Bad Religion, Foo Fighters, Jawbreaker, the Lawrence Arms, among so many others it's not even funny.

Buy it for the music. Or Buy it for the message--take your pick. I've always believed that just because someone is in the entertainment industry, doesn't mean they can't have an opinion, or contribute to any political cause they consider worthy of supporting. But, above all, stop whining about it.

  3. I laugh at those of you who don't like this cd because it has songs by liberal bands. Why did you even bother buying this if you are in support of Bush? The title should have given you a hint as to what kind of message it was sending out...

  4. This cd rocks! I didn't like Bush since he became our leader and I still don't like him now! I love the way all the artists came together and made this cd. The song Favorite Son by Green Day is great. it's on of those songs that just gets stuck in your head because it's so catchy. Also Green Day is one of the best political bands that I've heard and met. So to wrap up what I'm trying to say is: this is a great cd, all the songs are catchy except for mabey one, the message that this cd is giving out is that Bush sucks. He might be the worst president ever!, This cd is great and it is one of the best cd's I've heard in a long time. So you should get it.

  5. this is a very good compileation of classic alt/rock artists to relitivley new people, all with very good songs. many exclusive/new tracks, that if you are a fan of the band you definatly want to get. (i got it for 'favorite son' and ended up loving all of it). also sends out the message of punkvoter.com and against the criminal/ingornat bush administration. comes with a dvd that includes some great music vidoes, very hilarious comedy bits(by will fereal, greg proops, and patton oswalt), and informative political shorts. highly recomend it if you are pro-peace, anti-bush, a punk music lover, or all of the above.

5 comments about Plea for Peace 2: Take Action.

  1. this is a good cd, especially the songs by taking back sunday and yellowcard. Yellowcard's "Powder" is one of their best songs. it is amazing.

  2. My friend just bought this CD (and volumes 1 and 3 too) and it's AWESOME!!! It's a 2-CD set and we both prefer the second CD to the first (although that one's good too)!!! The highlights have to be "Powder" by Yellowcard and "Up to Me" by Movielife!!! It's awesome and there are tons of songs!!! If you like this one, I would recommend you to check out volumes 1 and 3 also ... they rock just as hard!!!

  3. Wow. This is one of the best compilations that I have right now. There are a few songs on the first disk that I don't like, Poison the Well, Avenged Sevenfold, Snapcase, etc, but the entire second disk is amazing. Some of my favorites are Yellowcard, The Amazing Transparent Man, Tsunami Bomb, The Plus Ones, etc. I definately reccomend this CD. It is for a great cause as well.

  4. after the plea for peae/take action cd before this one did so well they decided they could make a 2-disc for the next one..and they did. however, the content is not as great as the first one. no more alkaline trio, hot water music, thrice, AFI, thursday, at the drive-in, boy sets fire, good riddance, strike anywhere, or international noise conspiracy. however, the double disc still is packed with anti-flag, common rider, lawrence arms, finch(i really don't like them), poison the well, taking back sunday, movielife, digger, and piebald. but compare the two lists. so if you like this CD definately get the other one too.

  5. With this album, you can whitness amazing punk rock at its best. Songs range from the ska-core of Common Rider to the intense hardcore of Poison The Well. A total of thirty wo songs make up this compilation of all sub-genres of punk. Among the top pieces of this album, would have to be "Longshot" by Common Rider (vocalist Jesse Micheals of Operation Ivy),"What It Is To Burn" by Finch and "911 For Peace" by Anti-Flag for disc one. Standout on disc two include "Cute Without The 'E'(Cut From The Team)" by Taking Back Sunday, "Powder" by Yellowcard, "If I Had a Son" by Bad astronaut. And for $, what could make this album even better? Maybe an enhanced PC progam about the project....

5 comments about Punk Goes Pop.

  1. I love 90s music and lame pop from the early 2000s, and I also love classic punk. This combination of the new so-called-punk with my good ol' pop junk music is wonderful. This is my favorite CD.

  2. The reason why the singer on Element 101's cover of "I'm Like A Bird" sounds like a girl is because it is a girl. They had/have (not sure if they're still recording) a female lead singer through most of their career. This CD is decent at best.

  3. I bought this cd since I l-o-v-e-d Punk Goes 80's. While there are some good songs on here (Bye,Bye,Bye ; The Way You Love Me; I Want It That Way), there are some that are just plain laughable. For example, the cover of ...Baby One More Time is just.. horrendous. And, Student Rick's Heaven Is A Place On Earth is just funny (the lead singer cannot hit those high notes). Also, the cover of I'm Like A Bird is... confusing. The lead singer sounds kinda like a girl. By NO means are ANY of the bands on this cd "punk". Seriously. Rufio is screamo/emo and so is the Starting Line, and both of those are the closest things to punk on the cd.
It's still a great cd, though. It's just not as fantasmically awesome as Punk Goes 80's. (Get that instead!!! =))

  4. I got a burned copy from my brother a few years ago and thought it was just a cd he had put together, then I found out it was a real cd! I think it's really funny because the people singing put their own twist on the songs. It's pretty funny to listen to. I enjoy it.

  5. i am like addicted to The Starting Lines remake of Jennifer Lopez's "Im Real". It is so good. I heard it on Limewire and now i have to get the CD~! hopefully the other songs are just as good.

4 comments about Ska: The Third Wave, Vol. 2.

  1. There are only 3 reasons that you are reading this:

    1. You followed the link from Readmag.com's entertainment news thread.

    2. You are feeling nostalgic for your youthful "3rd wave" ignorance.

    3. You still a complete moron & enjoy this kind of dreck.

Whichever category you fit into, do NOT pay anything at all for this cd. I can't believe someone is trying to sell it for $23!

  2. A compilation is the best way to get into new bands and this CD is one of the best i have heard. If you like ska music, this is a must own. If you are just getting into ska, pick this up as a starter. All of the bands are fantastic. I have never heard a better third wave comp.

  3. This CD is Amazing! Each track is a masterpiece. My favorites include the Bumble Bee Tuna Song (Mephiskapheles) and Coffee (AWOL). If you Only know one of the Artists and have not heard of the rest, then you will be delighted to hear that each band featured is very similar to the next. They all Rock! If you're into Ska, or want to get into Ska. This is it. It has everything. Buy it now. nuff said.

  4. I think that it is a great CD. I just bought it the other week, and already I listen to it way more than I should. It has the traditional second and third wave ska sound (hence the title) and it is just so much fun. The "Bumblebee Tuna Song" is so much fun, and other great ones are: "Liquor Store" by LTJ (my favotires), "Inspector Gadget" by Ska King Crab, and "Rudy, Do You Know" by Downbeat Rulers. The CD is increadible as a whole and just fun. I recommend it to any person looking to get into ska/punk, and even if you already enjoy the music. A great CD overall!
