  1. This CD is a follow up to the movie with the same name. The last CD is the rehearsals. Elvis is laughing through some of the songs and it sounds like he is in a really good mood. The first CD is from the movie. His voice is so powerful on some of the some songs, it is like you are there with him while he is singing and rehearsing.

  2. Elvis' voice was just incredible. Great studio versions of "How the Web Was Woven" "Stranger in the Crowd" and "Twenty Days and Twenty Nights." And he sounds sounds just as good live as in the studio. "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" is about as good as it gets.

Could make the case that 69 - 70 was Elvis at his all around best. Still had the moves and his voice had really matured.

  3. If I were ever told to surrender my Elvis collection except for one item...my personal copy of this amazing box set would be the one for me.It showcases Elvis at his best.Stranger In The Crowd,How The Web Was Woven,Sylvia and Twenty Days and Twenty Nights are gems...seldom played.seldom heard and way over-looked...they are brought to light here. The concert disc...disc 2...is a classic by itself...and to think once you hear it you have one more to listen to...disc 3...which features some more live songs then you here Elvis in rehersel...which puts you on the front row of something historic...many of these have NEVER been heard before.Awesome.Amazing.You name it...This is the way it is....The Best Elvis Boxed Set that ever has been or will be released.

  4. I've been looking for this CD for the past 3 years. This is the best with Elvis at his best.

  5. I love this set!!! It totally satisfies my hunger to hear new things from Elvis. I love the first CD with its soaring 70's ballads and the way he interacts with the audience on the other CDs. The 1970 artwork is great too.

  1. The simple fact is, these original British MONO mixes sound much, much better than the "primitive stereo" US releases. Back in 1962-63 Rock and Roll was new and "stereo" was even newer. People didn't have Ipods, satellite radio, or 19-channel home theater systems. We (yes, "we!") had AM radios and portable record players. Even our parents' home "Hi-Fi" was usually mono. And that's something George Martin and the Beatles had to consider when intentionally mixing their music in Mono. Let's face it, commercial "stereo" technology was in its infancy and it would take several years of growth before it sounded even close to realistic. Compared to modern recordings, many of Rock's early stereo and "simulated stereo" recordings sound unnatural with guitar/vocals hard-left in one speaker and bass/drums hard right in the other and pretty much nothing going on in the middle. Played on a modern system, these original mono mixes actually sound like a band playing right in front of you. (Especially if you turn it up! C'mon, it's the Beatles!) Instruments and vocals are bright and clear and and everything is nicely centered. I think you'd be very pleasantly surprised at the overall improvement in sound quality.

Actually, ALL of the Beatles' music was mixed in mono for release in the UK, even the later true stereo releases, but, no, the UK mono versions are not "easily found on other [US] albums." I've managed to find all the UK mono albums through "Let It Be" and have compared them to the US stereo versions and I personally prefer the UK monos. (Frankly, "Abbey Road" and the "White Album" sound just fine in stereo. I guess by '68 they were finally getting the hang of it!) If you're interested, check Google and Yahoo for "Beatles Mono" for more detailed info on the subject and for product sources.

OK, so the early UK monos sound a lot better than the early US stereos. As for the "package," well, yeah, it was definitely marketed to "Collectors." The original 12 4-song British EPs (Extended Play vinyl records) are duplicated here on CDs in cardboard sleeves that mimic the original record jackets. Also included is the original 6-song EP release of "Magical Mystery Tour" on 2 separate mono and stereo CDs in a nice fold-out that looks like the LP jacket. (The US "Magical" had songs added by Capitol to fill out an album length.) The last disc contains "rare" UK stereo versions of 4 B-sides. Then there's the the nice black storage box that looks like one I used to keep my 45s in back in my misspent youth, oh so long ago(!)

If you don't have any audiophile-wannabe tendencies and you're content with the US stereo versions that you've probably grown up with, then no, I don't suppose you need this collection. But, if you'd like at least some of your "golden oldies" to sound more natural and realistic then go for it. And as for the expense, do you really expect to pay full price for something on Amazon?

  2. Overpriced. I only own this set because, twelve years ago, a local branch of a major retail chain had this mismarked with the "1" accidentally left off of the then-$150 price tag (then it became a heck of a deal!). You can pretty much get any of these songs on all of the other lower-priced Beatles CDs out there. There are, however, some great carrots for collectors in the form of the mono mixes, especially on the Magical Mystery Tour disc (which is actually presented in stereo AND mono).

While the first seven discs contain widely-available mono mixes, the final eight discs contain mono tracks unavailable anywhere else. Some of these mixes are significantly different from the stereo mixes. This is nowhere more evident on "I Am the Walrus", in which the mono mix contains a couple of extra bars in the middle of the song.

Over all, a ripoff for non-completists but almost worthwhile for obsessive collectors.

  3. great songs. but to be got on the original albums for a lot less than this extreme overpriced set

  4. This box set is just as delightful as it was way back in the 60's when the Beatles hit the airwaves. Even the mono songs sound excellent! Packaging is not as important as what is inside the box. These songs brought back many fond memories and I would highly recommend it.

5 comments about Singles Collection: The London Years.

  1. THE ROLLING STONES SINGLES COLLECTION * THE LONDON YEARS consists of three CDs packed in the LP-sized box that was in vogue 10 or 15 years ago-- in hindsight, a wastefully expensive package. The included 72-page giant book is of recycled-quality paper. It's pages are dyed several starkly annoying colors, and all graphics are in low-grade B&W. Two pages of text in front, and two in back bookend the spread out song lyrics and lousy-looking photos. A hack job, design-wise.

The music is little better, sonically. There's a persistent dullness to a lot of these tracks. Andrew Oldham is credited with oversight of this project, so it's surprising that the transfers aren't more vibrant. This great material has been badly served. Recommended only for serious fans or completists. A middling rating for a mediocre product.

    TOTAL RUNNING TIMES --
    DISC ONE -- 66:41
    DISC TWO -- 68:27
    DISC THREE -- 49:39

  2. stones at thier best
the londen years proves that early stones are the best

  3. A comprehensive collection of single releases from 1963-71 which is far more than it proclaims in it's title. This is the most complete collection of Rolling Stones singles and b-sides available on CD format. From their first in June of 1963 (Come On b/w I Want to Be Loved), you will find almost every aspect of the Stones singles material represented, including British flip-sides and Decca/London singles released after 1971. This 3CD (4LP) set overlaps thirty-five (35) songs from the Hot Rocks collections (4CDs), but offers an additional twenty-three (23) selections. Remaining true to the singles, songs such as Sympathy For the Devil, You Can't Always Get What You Want, and Dandelion are heard as they were in their original edited (or extended) "single" form for this album. note-though it would have been a great highlight, this collection does not contain Street Fighting Man as it is heard in it's initial 7" form, that version remains otherwise unavailable on any official CD or LP. When the song Wild Horses was released as a single, it's b-side Sway was found in alternate form as well; that recording was not owned by Decca/London, and thus was not included in this collection.

  4. What a great idea! While their most noteworthy contemporaries, the Beatles, were one of the first bands to explore the possibilities of creating great albums, by and large the Stones remained a band that created listenable, danceable, rockable hit singles. (There were some exceptional albums, however, such as Aftermath and Beggars Banquet.) So, their original record company has a great idea: Why not gather together ALL the Stones singles (the ones released on the London label from the years 1963-1976) with their flip sides (both US and UK) and release them in one great big beautiful box! Brilliant, huh??? Actually, it is an excellent concept and, for the most part, well executed. It is true that many of the Stones great singles are here: "Satisfaction," "Get Off of My Cloud," "Brown Sugar," "Let's Spend the Night Together," etc. It is also true that many of their lesser known singles and fabulous flips (B-sides) are here as well. Many other bands would feel very lucky to have just one song as good as "The Spider and the Fly," "The Under-assistant West Cost Promotion Man," "Play With Fire," "Little Red Rooster," and "Ruby Tuesday". So, that means it's a perfect compilation, right? Well, not quite. For one thing, both hits and flips include a lot of clunkers, such as "Sad Day", "Memo from Turner," "The Singer Not the Song" and "Surprise, Surprise." Also included are some of the mid-sixties demos later gathered on the album Metamorphosis, such as "I Don't Know Why" and "Jiving Sister Fanny." They are interesting ideas, but obviously unfinished. Finally, since this is a singles collection, that means we get the cut version of "You Can't Always Get What You Want." Most listeners will no doubt want the full version that contains the choral section at the beginning, found on the Let It Bleed album. Still, over 3/4 of the cuts are worthwhile, and many are classics not easy to find in one place. So, grab your boxers, put on this box, and rock this town!!!

  5. This is the only Rolling Stones album I have, and I must say that it is quite exceptional. When I first got the album I was amazed by how many songs I had heard and enjoyed, and yet how many more great quality songs were available to learn. Now I can't imagine a time when I didn't know these songs, they are so good. I have listened to this collection many many times, and yes, the Stones are definitely as good as you've heard. Since I (haven't had the chance to) have not followed their career throughout time, I feel inadequate to say too much about the Stones except to say that I REALLY enjoy this set and highly recommend it to others. The new remastered set would be good, except it hasn't nearly the same amount of music and alot of redundancy to this set. I also don't know how much the improvement of remastering will do, these songs sound great as presented here. Since the Stones have much more blues sound than the beatles or other sixties contemporaries, I really like their sound. My favorite highlights: Come On (Chuck Berry did it, but this one really cooks,) Little Red Rooster (almost better than Howlin' Wolf's version,) Get Off My Cloud, Mother's Little Helper, Paint it Black, Sympathy for the Devil, etc. etc. etc. Don't miss out on this legendary rock band and this great set.

5 comments about The Dawn of Doo-Wop.

  1. This collection really ought to be called "The Roots of Doo Wop," as it reaches back quite a bit farther than any point that could reasonably called the dawn of doo wop. For example, the song most commonly cited as doo wop's first, Sonny Til and the Orioles' "It's Too Soon To Know," turns up only on the second disk. Even among the songs recorded several years after that one, most don't quite fit into the genre. All the essential elements are there (except for the nonsense backing vocals in most cases), but they haven't quite gelled into what we now know as doo wop.

That said, doo wop fans are likely to enjoy what they do find here all the same. It's a nice sampler of early black group harmony, reaching back as far as 1940 and featuring giants of the pre-rock era such as the Mills Brothers, the Ink Spots and the Ravens, along with plenty of lovely performances from more obscure groups. Interestingly, even among groups represented here that did make some doo wop records (notably the Five Keys and the Robins), most of the selections included here are better described as group harmony than doo wop. The one clear exception is the Clovers' "Fool, Fool, Fool." Its presence at least shows how the various elements heard in the other songs finally came together. One other distinction is the adult nature of many of the songs, particularly the Larks' selections such as "When I Leave These Prison Walls" (yes, a true story).

Overall, this set lacks the innocence and exuberance of most doo wop collections, but it shows where those essential elements came from. It will probably appeal to most doo wop fans the in same way those rare early recordings on your favorite band's box set can be appealing.

  2. The Dawn of Doo-Wop doesn't really have too many true Doo Wop songs on it but instead focuses on the R&B and pop vocal group harmonies that laid the groundwork for the 50's Doo Wop explosion.
The songs on this set date from 1940 to the early 1950s and feature many seminal groups such as the Inkspots, the Mills Brothers, the Orioles, the Ravens and many others.
There are many obscure songs here and the sound quality is very good.
Also included in a nice booklet of liner notes jam-packed with information.
This is another Proper box set that excels in quality and value.

  3. This is a good collection of often obscure songs and artists. Unfortunately, the sound quality is terrible. Every pop and hiss is included and really detracts from the listening experience. It seems to me that if Proper thought enough of this material to package it they would have put in at least a little effort to clean the sound up. I won't order any of their other collections as I have my doubts that the quality would be any better.

  4. This is a spectacular, if mis-named collection of early group harmony gems. Out of 100 sides, there isn't a real Doo-Wop in the bunch. But it's certainly a bonanza for fans of the "roots" of R'nB harmony groups. Almost all of the "Grandfather" groups, & several of the "Fathers" are represented, with a few omitted, such as the Hollywood Flames, Cats & the Fiddle, Clovers & Brown Dots. I have over 5,000 records in my personal collection, but only 6 or 7 of these sides, all on 78's......I loved it, & the price is definitely right......D-J

  5. This is an intelligently constructed overview of pre- and early
doo wop from the 1940's and early 1950's with a first class 52 page booklet and 100 songs on four cd's with excellent sound quality. You get the superstars of classic group harmony--the incomparable Five Keys on Aladdin, still the heavyweight champions of the genre;the excellent Swallows on King, Larks on Apollo, early Orioles, Ravens, Robins plus many rare and obscure items never before on CD like the Lewis Bronzeville Five and many more gems for fans and collectors. This is the finest box set in the genre so far, and at an incredible price--about one-third the cost of the Rhino boxes with a similar number of cuts. Check out other Proper boxes of similar bargains for blues, R & B, Jazz and Country. My highest recommendation.

5 comments about Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J./The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle/Darkness on the Edge of Town.

  1. What a price for 3 Bruce CDs!!!! Unbelievable! Can't get enough of the Boss!

  2. Three of his best releases at a great price - what's not to love? All three are well-packaged (as originally released, as far as I can tell). If you don't have these cd's, this is a good deal on three great recordings.

  3. It was great to get Bruce and the boys together in one package.I only had the old buggered vinyl.these were the days when I lived Darkness and was immortal .Stan

  4. Greetings From Asbury Park served notice that there was a new musical force on the scene. On his debut, Bruce showed he was the best songwriter to come along since Bob Dylan. The album kicks off with the musical tongue twister "Blinded By The Light" that showed Bruce wasn't a typical singer-songwriter. The song has a funky riff and is replete with horns. "Spirit In The Night" introduced the E Street sound and is a precursor to the character oriented songs that would appear later on Born To Run & Wild. "Does This Bus Stop at 82nd St?" is fun and "For You" is a rare rock song about suicide. "Growin' Up" & It's So Hard To Be A Saint In The City" show early signs of Bruce's "Tramp" persona. "Lost In The Flood" is the great forgotten Bruce song and is as good a song as he has ever recorded. While Greetings is uneven at points ("Mary, Queen of Arkansas' & "The Angel"), it shows an artist who had a very original sound and huge potential. It is great to throw it in the CD player and hear a young, raw and hungry Bruce Springsteen and listen to where it all started.

The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street shuffle may only contain 7 songs, but they pack a punch and are among the finest of Bruce's career. The album opens with the funky guitar riff of "The E Street Shuffle". "4th Of July" is the song that made Asbury Park famous and Madame Marie's a mecca for Bruce fans. "Kitty's Back" is a blazing rock 'n' soul workout and is followed by the comical "Wild Billy's Circus Story". On the original album, the last three songs constituted side two and it is about as perfect of an album side as there is in history. "Incident on 57th Street", "Rosalita" and "New York City Serenade" is a three part musical suite and they flow seamlessly into one another. The stories they tell are so vivid that they are almost like musical literature. Bruce has released albums that were musically superior to Wild, but never one that was this much fun.

In Darkness On The Edge Of Town, Springsteen's characters are no longer looking to escape their problems, they've giving up escape a long time ago. They are searching for answers to the situations they find themselves in. Optimism has been replaced by despair and cynicism. "Badlands" is an angry anthem about never being satisfied with where you are in life. "Adam Raised A Cain" is about the struggles between a father and his angry son and "Factory" is about the drudgery of everyday life. Songs like "Something In The Night", "The Promised Land" and "Racing In The Streets" are about chasing a dream that one will probably never find. "Candy's Room", "Streets Of Fire" & "Prove It All Night" are about putting everything on the line for someone and having to constantly prove their devotion. The title song best sums up the album. People are looking for answers to the same questions, willing to pay the cost, but never find them. No matter how much time they search into the Darkness On The Edge Of Town, they end up in the same place.

  5. If I didn't have all three of these albums in my collection, I'd jump on this deal. 3 early Bruce albums for ...? Each disc buries every post-"River" album (with the exception of "Nebraska") by a long shot. Of the 3, "Wild & Innocent" is the least accessible, and even it boasts 'Rosalita', '4th of July'(better known as 'Sandy'), and the weighty 'New York City Serenade'. The poetry on "Greetings" is weird, and playful, and fun as hell: "Nuns run bald through Vatican halls, pregnant, pleading immaculate conception...?" And "Darkness"? Well, it's just a rock-solid album, pun intended. These albums are must-haves for anyone who knew and loved Bruce before the "Born in the USA" debacle.

5 comments about Songs of Yesterday.

  1. A big collection of new mixes and unreleased material from their late 60s and early 70s era. Interesting but not by any means a substitute for their original album mixes. It seems a lot of the bottom heaviness of their driving blues rock has been stripped in place of an 'easier listening' sound. Andy Fraser, the bassist, is almost nowhere to be found as he's been flushed out of songs like 'All Right Now', 'Woman' and 'Fire and Water'.

Still, it's a great set to fulfill anyone's curiosity as to what their long unreleased stuff sounds like. No we need to find the original mixes of those tracks as well!

  2. First, you must let go off the fact that you are shelling out BUCKS for music recorded roughly 35 years ago...once you do that the journey is like a trip to heaven.

    Basic Tracks:

All the classics are here...Mover, The Hunter, All Right Now, and Be My friend. I am very impressed by the remastering effort. Free were a great band but poor production can really kill enthusiasm. Exile on Main St is a great example of an amazing record almost lost in the muddle of poor production. These songs make Koss, Simon, and Paul JUST jump out at you!!!! After years of listening to the hiss laden lps and cassettes, these songs were now a revelation.

    B-sides

I think we have all forgotten the true nature and purpose of the 45. It delivered a hit and often an equally good but overlooked song. Thankfully for FREE, and fans, they did quite a few singles which resulted in a large number of B-sides. I love them and real fans should too. They are every bit as good as the A-sides once again showing the amazing musical talents of Simon, Andy, and Paul.

    Alternate takes.

This can be a thorny issue. OFten bands fill collections of altenrate takes as a means to fill space and jack up the price. Sometimes we get glimpses of how songs evolve and entirely different interpretations prior to song's actual release. I believe all of the above happens. We get different arrangements, interpretations, and some filler. That is entirely OK by me.

    Live Songs

Unbelievable!!!!! The live material on this disc reminds us all that this band was amazing and was well ahead of its rivals.

  3. Free was one of those bands one either liked or didn't like. I was one who was always amazed by the voice and guitar of this stunning quartet. So what you need to do is , buy all the individual albums first. Listen to them . Enjoy them. Marvel at them. Then plunk down the coin for this box. (Better yet , buy this now---before you can't get it--but still listen to the original discs first)...After listening to the complete Free canon , put this monster on....alternate takes , demos , unreleased material galore...You will explode with joy !

  4. This is one of the best FREE CD's I heard! Although it's priceie it's well worth it for any die hard FREE fan. It has many of their best hits on it but it shouldn't be called a greatest hits CD. If your looking for a greatest hits I would suggest "Molton Gold, The Anthology" or "The FREE Story" or "Completely FREE" or "Best of" which used to be on vinyl a record.

  5. This set is loaded with great stuff for the Paul Rodgers and Free fans. My favorite disc is the live disc. The others are loaded with all sorts of alternate versions and singles verions etc. Good stuff if you already have all of the Free CDs which I do. If you don't then I recommend them over this set. I enjoy listening to the originals in order of release and hearing the evolution of the band as they morphed into more of Bad Company sound.

  1. Tons of surf & instrumental music from the early sixties, cool covers of their favourites bands (Buddy Holie, Link Wray,Them)and a surprising evolution in the last year of the band (1966) with incredible cool songs like "Same lines" exploring the new sounds of folk rock like The Byrds, Dylan...Nice price for this sundazed fine release with all the songs this lovely Band recorded.

  2. Zany wacky surf music and instrumentals abound. Kudos to Sundazed for another fine release. I think this includes all of their songs too. One of the finest American Bands of the sixties. Everyone that was alive back then will remember Surfin' Bird. Same Lines sounds like a Dylan tune. They never got the recognition they deserved. Buy it, you'll like it.

5 comments about Live/1975-85.

  1. Live albums. Some artists shine. The live recordings show why they are so popular when they hit the road. Others should run screaming when their record label or their manager suggests a live project! Springsteen is one of the former. He and his band have always had a reputation as a killer live act. Live 1975-1985 shows that their reputation is well deserved.

By the time these cds were released just before Xmas, 1986, Springsteen had made seven records, including one double. This is sixteen sides of music. Each was a classic. There are about forty songs on this live collection. If you subtract five non-Springsteen songs we are left with thirty-five live songs. That would be about two songs for each LP side! Thus, these three discs should contain la crème de la crème. Discs one and two certainly get us off to a great start. The cuts are primarily from concerts heard between 1975 and 1980. Unfortunately, thereafter, for me at least, the set runs out of steam a little as we are given seven songs from Born in the USA - my least favourite of his first seven records. However, all in all, I shouldn't quibble with the song selection. After all, my favourites are not necessarily yours.

The singing and the playing are, as one would expect, first class throughout. Bruce is always in good voice. The E Street Band is as tight as it is in the studio. The balance between vocals and instruments is mixed perfectly. The base and drums rumble deeply, the piano tinkles brightly, the vocals are clear, the guitar solos are crisp. All is in balance. The pacing of the songs, often so screwed up in live performances - too damned fast - is right on. Several songs are actually slowed down to great effect (e.g. Thunder Road).

Live albums are often only for the diehard fans. This set is an exception. If you own no other Springsteen records and you are looking for an introduction this would be a great start. I cannot honestly say that I am a huge Springsteen fan. Although I have nearly all of his releases I do not think about him the way I think about, for instance, Van Morrison or Elvis Costello. Having admitted this, I must also admit that every time I spin a Springsteen record I am surprised by my reaction. I start to listen and expect to enjoy the experience. I end up believing that he is one of the great talents of all time.

  2. This album has taken all the best live performances and put them into one album... since they are all live the have woven the tracks from one to the other seamlessly so this album seems like a live concert...
    great album.

  3. The BOSS is the best in the BIZ. I love his music and I finally wore out the cassette copy of this music I recieved from my sister back in the early 90's. I am sure I will listen to this CD for decades to come.

  4. I ordered the boxed set of Springsteen Live: 1975-85. I had this set on casette years ago when it came out. I literally wore it out.
This item was delivered to me promptly and I am well on my way to wearing it out....Thank you .....Velma

  5. The product arrived in good time and was exactly as described. I wouldn't hesitate to buy again from this vendor.

  1. This is an incredible book and the CD's are awesome! Dusty chronology as far as songs, when, where & why is noted page by page, as well as photographs throughout her career. It has early songs almost impossible to find as well as hits. 95 in all. A tribute to a great great singer and an interesting catalogue of the music and the times. Thoughts by other artists about Dusty's contribution throughout. Worth the price tag.

  2. I ordered this & received the full size 11x11 book, not the 6x10 book like the description says. Great book & CD selections!

  3. A wonderful collection for any Dusty fan or for someone looking to be introduced in a more sophisticatd way than to just buy her 'best of' albums. She is here in all her glory. A must for the Dusty devotee.

  4. I have plenty of boxed sets, but none of them compare to this. The packaging is remarkable as well as the photos and the music. Dusty could make choking noises sound beautiful.

  5. This set went out of print shortly after it's release for a redesign of the package; the result is amazing. I've never seen a boxed set design quite like this one, it's called an "ear book." It's "11 x 11" and fits on a bookshelf, the pages filled with photos, essays and extensive liner notes describing each song. The cd's are filled to capacity and while I wish the extended mix of "In Private" was here, there isn't enough room for the extra three minutes and the bulk of the material makes up for any shortcomings. The songs mentioned in the liner notes but missing such as the duets with Cilla Black, Spencer Davis, BJ Thomas, and the extended version of the Donna Summer co-penned "Sometimes Like Butterflies" can be found on the release "Heart & Soul" on the Varese Sarabande label. This boxed set should serve as a prototype for any collection attempting to be comprehensive as it contains all the hits and every album, including the abandoned projects, is represented. The closing track and Dusty's final recording "Someone To Watch Over Me" is stark and beautiful, it's the way any standard should be sung. Overall, for lack of a better term, I'd say this set is a masterpiece.

  1. The Shadows are great on this cd. It is priced very low for a two disc set which makes this cd even more appealing. I enjoyed listening to every moment of this live performance.
