5 comments about Rock, Rhythm and Doo Wop, Vol. 1: The Greatest Songs from Early Rock 'n' Roll.

  1. good, well thought out box set, good listening. This music has became timeless and still sounds fresh.

  2. ROCK, RHYTHM AND DOO WOP is an excellent collection for fans of rock & roll TOP 40 radio. The majority here were top sellers in their day and got the most airtime. By those parameters alone, they would be considered "the greatest."

    Main criticisms--
Since these tunes are more likely to appear on various artists compilations, even the beginning collector may already own a good percentage of them. Additionally, the three CDs here could easily have accomodated 90 songs, instead of 66.

The 64-page long-box style book is quite excellent-- packed with full page photos and lots of interesting details. Sound quality of the transfers is very good, as well. Altogether, this is a nice package of rock & roll and doo wop standards.

    TOTAL RUNNING TIMES --
    DISC ONE -- 54:16
    DISC TWO -- 55:45
    DISC THREE -- 56:57

  3. The best thing that I can tell you about this collection is that so many people wanted to borrow it at my wife's job she had to bring it home for fear that someone would take it.Wish I could get a commission for all the people that said they were going to buy it. Sound restored wonderfully, brings back a lot of good memories from a simpler time.

  4. Rock, Rhythm and Doo Wop, Vol. 1: The Greatest Songs From Early Rock 'n' Roll is yet another great box set from Rhino Records. The songs span the early years of rock music from the mid 50's to the early 60's. As the title suggests, all styles of music are represented by artists like The Drifters, Buddy Holly, The Shirelles, Del Shannon, The Platters, Ray Charles, Little Richard and many others. Well worth the price, this is a perfect collection for fans of this musical era.

  5. I sat down at the computer to list Rock Rhythm & Doo Wop CD set on Amazon Marketplace to sell, but just on a whim stuck one of the CD's in the player to listen for a minute. Now I just cannot part with it. The music is so much fun, you cannot stand still during some of the songs, and it really brings back memories (for some of us!). If you enjoy music from this era, this is a great set to have.

5 comments about Brainwashed (Special Edition with Bonus DVD).

  1. A great last go for one of the fab four. A beautiful album from start to finish.

  2. During the Time that much of the Music on this Recording was created, George, was very aware that his Life was almost over. And going in, I had never heard a Note of this CD called: "Brainwashed". As, I could only imagine what he was dealing with in the Last Year of his Life, I was expecting this Music to be Dire and Depressed in content. These Great Up-Lifting Songs and the General Tone of Happiness that I found here, for me has really Re-Inforced the Commitment of George Harrison as a Man of Great Faith and Spirit. And because of this, my Respect for this Man and his Art has Multiplied.

From the Wonderful Acoustic Guitars that ring like Bells on the Opener: "Any Road", right on through to the Closer: "Brainwashed", this is Joyful Music that ranks up with any of George's Greatest Works. Like "Cloud Nine" and the best Moments of The Wilbury's, this is the Work of an Mature and Worldly Person, that seems very content and at Peace.

On repeated listenings this Record holds up so Well, my Favorite track keeps on changing, right now "Pisces Fish" is at the Top, but this is an ongoing thing for my Ears and Heart, so I'll bet another of these Gems takes it's place as I absorb this Record again and again.

I will agree with some of the other Reviewers and say that as the DVD is Beautiful in Content, and gives us a real personal look at George, {Who was Sooo Private about his Life} I sure do wish it was Longer. That said, I really think that this The Deluxe Edition is they way to go, it is special and fitting for this Record to have all the 'Extras' included.

It's still Difficult to be without George Harrison in our World, but his Spirit is so Vast, he is now The Universe above us Forever.
    This is a Fantasic CD...FIVE STARS !!!

  3. This is by Far my Favorite Album by George...
Lyrically it is lightyears beyond where he has gone before.

  4. This album is a must for all Harrison fans, and deserves a listen even by those who are not. His talent and spirituality are up front in the music and lyrics, which are mostly explorations of Harrison's feelings about life and God, with a few surprises in the form of more whimsical offerings like "The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea", and the bluesy "Rocking Chair in Hawaii", which point to his versatility as an artist. The chant performed by Harrison and Dhani, his son, at the end of the title track is especially poignant. The album released posthumosly and finished by Jeff Lynne and Dhani is a testament to a musician and man who was much loved by his family, friends, and fans.

  5. I have been a Beatlemaniac since age 5, when my parents gave me my first Beatles Album (The Beatles Again; 1970). I purchased this album on recommendation from a fellow Beatlemaniac. I have listened to this album virtually every day for a year and a half. George left it all on the vinyl, and most lovingly. Thank you George, for this musical treasure.

  1. Never thought Rick Nelson produced such a vast amount great music! I've played these CDs over and over. I recommend these CDs to any '60s music lover.

  2. From the photos to the songs, it is a wonderful group of music/memories.
    Very pleased with my purchase

  3. Ricky Nelson is one of the most underrated Rock stars ever, period. Want proof? Listen to this album.

  4. I'm glad I bought this 4-pack CD package. It has a lot of songs that I had not heard before. The quality is excellent.

  5. I WOULD LIKE TO THANK WHO EVER PUT THESE CD'S TOGETHER. THEY ARE JUST GREAT. I HAVE BEEN A FAN OF RICKS SINCE I WAS 11 YRS. LETS JUST SAY I'M 30+++ NOW. TO HEAR SOME OF THESE SONGS IS UNBELEIVEABLE...I HAD ALL OF RICKS ALBUMS WHEN I WAS GROWING UP, AND THEY WERE STOLEN WHEN MY HOUSE WAS ROBBED. SLOWLY, I'M REPLACING THEM, BUT THEY WON'T BE AUTOGRAPHED LIKE MY ORIGINALS. TO HEAR SONGS LIKE "ONE NIGHT STAND," "PROMENADE IN GREEN", "YOU JUST CANT QUIT" "I RISE, I FALL" SONGS THAT I HAVEN'T HEARD FOR YEARS WHEN I USED TO PLAY THEM OVER & OVER & OVER AGAIN WITH MY EAR STUCK TO MY PARENTS CONSOLE T.V. WITH THE TURN TABLE ATTACHED, MY POOR PARENTS HAD TO LISTEN TO THEM OVER & OVER AGAIN. (WE DIDN'T HAVE HEAD PHONES THEN)
ANY ONE WHO EVER FOLLOWED RICK, WILL ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS.!!!
THE CD WITH MATTHEW, GUNNAR, & SAM SINGING GARDEN PARTY IS THE BEST TRIBUTE THEY COULD DO FOR THEIR FATHER...AND SAM'S VOICE IS THE GREATEST!! I HOPE ONE DAY, HE THINKS OF GOING IN TO THE RECORD BUSINESS. HE'S GOT THE GREAT RICKY NELSON CHARM.

5 comments about Jeff Beck 3-Pak - Blow by Blow/Wired/There and Back.

  1. Three Great Albums... Jeff Beck at the height of his artistic journey. Let's not overlook all of the other gifted musicians on these discs. The guitar gods sometimes get all the credit. If you are just getting into Jeff Beck and his bands, this would be the best and most economical way to "Get There"... Check out "Rough & Ready" if you can get the CD somewhat economically. Many fans forget about that one. One last thought... these cats can still ROCK!!! Love to see you live again.

  2. for any old or new jeff beck fans this is a great collection of jeff becks best songs all in one very affordable box set. cd set contains "blow by blow" and "wired" and the last disc "there and back" all put out by epic records. i think the best way to listen to this set{if possible} is just put all three disc in and press shuffle all. cd contains classics like "cause we ended as lovers" to "blue wind" to "the pump" ....

  3. I have been a Beck fan since high school/college and own allthree of these albums on vinyl. After my initial disappointment in"Who Else!" (I don't know, maybe at 40, I'm to old to like the techno stuff, maybe Jeff was just better 25 years ago!), I wanted to replace one of my old vinyl albums with a CD. Going back through my collection, I found that my 3 favorite Beck releases were Blow By Blow (1975), Wired (1976), & There and Back (1980).

Since I had limited myself to buying just one of these, I had to make a decision! I was having a hard time deciding which was my favorite when I found this box set containing all 3!...(all 3 are better records than "Who Else!")

  4. For A Brit, this is unbelievable value. These three albums chart JB's quantum leap for me, and I urge you to listen to "Cause we've ended as Lovers", "Led Boots", and "The Pump" (to take one from each) as demonstrations of Beck@s mastery. It's a personal thang, but next Hendrix, he discovered how to read a soul out of a guitar like no other... there are many really powerful tracks in this collection, and I cannot see a lover of electric guitar ever regretting stumping up the bucks for this slice of "Beethoven late quartet" level inspiration, beauty, and sheer octane.

  5. Jeff Beck. 2 words that speak volums, A true musical genius of this or any generation!! I had the opportunity 2 c him live 4/18/99 at the paramount theater oakland 5 stars a real a classic!!! $35 for the ticket a true value

3 comments about Real Life Permanent Dreams: A Cornucopia of British Psychedlia 1965-1970.

  1. Shelling out big bucks for a psych comp is a risky move. I don't particularly object to the song collection or packaging (although there is more duplication than I would like) but the sound quality on the my CD's is horrible in my opinion. Virtually nothing is remastered that I can tell and everything is low and scratchy and there's reverb everywhere. In fact, I don't look forward to listening to this collection at all. If I got a bad batch of discs please let me know but based upon what I received, my cash would have been better spent elsewhere. The new "Insane Times" comp, while containing one fourth of the tracks, is far more enjoyable.

  2. The 99 tracks on Real Life Permanent Dreams run the range from Pop to Freakbeat to early Prog. Some are from famous artists (The Kinks, Donovan, Jethro Tull). But, most are obscure although a few appear on similar compilations like Mojo's Acid Drops, Nuggets II and Paisley Pop.

There are a few covers here as well. The Fleur De Lys' Circles is very close to The Who's original. Julie Driscoll's Season Of The Witch is a little different than Donovan's. The covers show how these bands influenced and were influenced by each other.

If you can't get enough authentic sixties Popsike, this set's for you.

    [DW]

  3. I'm somewhat proud (and embarrassed :)) to have amassed almost 100 compilations on British beat/freakbeat/pop/sike/popsike, alone. These prized discs represent years of feckless and self-indulgent preoccupation (as it undoubtedly appears to the wife) in hunting down these imported hen's teeth which seem to go out of print as fast as they are released. So...to actually find something new that doesn't cover the same soggy, trodden ground and/or presents a fresh perspective with new tracks and artists is a rare and welcome discovery. This collection seems to do that very thing. Yes, it has a few familiar faces and some big names sprinkled in, but they are generally overlooked album cuts or b-sides that lend credence to the period and flow of ideas being passed around musically, like a joint. Not everyone who will buy this box set may be as sophisticated as some of us "chronically obsessive types", but they should enjoy this interesting assemblage on listen-ability alone. On the surface it is reminiscent (albeit much less obvious) of The British Nuggets II box and is divided onto four discs, "Sowing The Seeds", "Plant A Flower Today", Happydaystoytown" and Circus Days Are Here Again" which dance almost chronologically up through the years '65-'70. It comes with a nice glossy booklet that follows track for track, giving one some sense of history, the players and their trajectories. A worthy addition from one of the only big name labels, Castle/Sanctuary, who seem to think it important to continue to invest energy and pounds in this historical genre.

5 comments about Synchronistic Wanderings.

  1. I own both "Synchronistic Wanderings" and "Pat Benatar Greatest Hits", and I must say "Synchronistic Wanderings" does a much better job of covering her career. If you're unsure of which to get, go with this more inclusive collection. For only a few more dollars you can get this collection (used), but you get two extra CD's worth of material, including rarities and tracks from her 90's albums "True Love" and "Gravity's Rainbow", not to mention a biographical booklet with commentary by Pat and Neil (her husband/guitarist).

Also, some of the tracks from her "Greatest Hits" album have been shortened by a few seconds to fit as many songs as possible into one CD. It's only a minor annoyance, but an annoyance nonetheless. On this collection all the songs are their original length.

"Synchronistic Wanderings" is a great collection, by one of the greatest rock singers of our time.

  2. Pat Benatar is, in my mind, the greatest female rock singer of all time. She had an amazing voice, was incredibly sexy, and made some great music. Up until now, my only introduction to her was the single disc "Greatest Hits" album released this past June. It had some amazing stuff on it. But I wanted more.

So, I went searching through Amazon, and I found the three disc boxed set "Synchronistic Wanderings". I saw it and went, "I got to get this". And when I saw how cheap it was, I said, "I have to get this now.

Well today, I finally found it. I popped it into my cd player. My thoughts? Read on for the practically inevitable positives and negatives.

    Positives:
-Three discs filled with nothing but Pat! What more can you ask for? This cd has all the big hits, including "Heartbreak", "Hit Me With Your Best Shot", "Hell Is For Children", "Shadows Of The Night", "Love Is A Battlefield", "We Belong" and "Invincible" are all included.
-Many underrated album cuts and rarities are incuded as well, including b - sides, demos and live performances.
    -Fantastic liner notes.
    -Great remastering job.
-No edits! All songs are in their original length.
-This set is CHEAP! I thought I had to shell out a good sixty or seventy dollars for it, but I got it for less than forty bucks. That is one offer you should not pass up.

    Negatives:
-While the remastering job is great overall, there are one or two songs that sound a little flat, namely "Ooh Ooh Song" and "Invincible. But other than that, everything sounds great.

Overall, this is the best Pat Benatar compilation on the market. If you're a casual or beginning fan, than this is the collection to own.

  3. Disk two and three are the best, after Pat and Neil had a chance to mature. (Steven Stolder, don't give up your day job.) Bolth ear candy and social commentary. can't get enough!! Best song is the Freeking Rocking All Fired Up.

  4. For my money this box set lacks nothing. In terms of extras, the demo versions and b-sides are very cool. My personal favorite inclusion is the song "Shooting Star" from the Harry Chapin Tribute. If you saw the concert on PBS, it was a moving night to begin with- and when she first appeared she seemed almost out of place with the folksy stars like Judy Collins and CSN. Then she belted out this tune and turned the theater upside down. Probably my personal highlight of the show and I'm thrilled to have a copy on something other than an old VHS tape. Well worth the relatively inexpensive box-set-price.

  5. This is a 3 CD anthology covering 1979-1999. Everything that I like and dislike about Benatar is here. The early rock stuff sometimes makes me cringe with Neil Giraldo's simplistic but bombastic '80s power chords. Benatar has a great voice but never reached her potential due to working within the constraints of AOR radio...which paid off handsomely considering she had 19 top 40 hits. There are a fair amount of unreleased tracks and alternative versions here for the die hard, but what I enjoyed most were the liner notes. Every single song has very enlightening insights from Pat and Neal, who shared their feelings separate from each other, making for some very interesting contrasts. It's great from a music standpoint as it explains why they left some things in (that's John Lee Hooker laughing at the beginning of Rise) and what they were trying to accomplish with other things, what songs they still love and others that they can't stand anymore. Reading along also allows you to really feel what they have gone through the last 20 years, from making artistic compromises with Chrysalis, to the birth of their kids and the highs and lows of their careers. Interesting reading and usually good listening.

5 comments about Live with a Little Help from Our Friends.

  1. This set of songs pulls some of the best talent out there together for some spectacular jams. This is well worth the money if you love blues, rock, all mixed together. Warren Hayes, Woody, Jimmy Herring, Derek Trucks, Randall Bramlett etc. There are some great covers here too, this is the shiz, get it, and start jamming. The time to jam is now. Anyone slamming this does not know quality music. Keep jamming America.
    Coconut Phil.

  2. This collection is a must for every true GM fan. Some of the recordings experience some technical difficulties, but it is a box set, after all, and you can expect such extras to be included. The regular release of "With a little help..." is probably sufficient for you music-wise if you don't want to shell out the $45.00 for the box set, as cool as it is. GOV'T MULE RULES! Great Blues Rock!!

  3. At a time when so much great live music remains in the vaults, Warren Haynes continues to record and release amazing performances. (The "Wintertime Blues" live double CD of an annual Christmas Jam with major guests, is a prime example.)

Live With A Little Help From Our Friends was recorded at Atlanta's Roxy Theatre New Year's Eve '98/'99. Incredible music and jams with Haynes, Allen Woody, Matt Abts, and guests Chuck Leavell, Derek Trucks, Jimmy Herring, Randall Bramblett, Bernie Worrell, Marc Ford and others.

How fortunate there were tapes rolling.

Quality live rock music is alive and well!

  4. This CD set represents a band recovering from a tremendous loss (A. Woody). From the ashes of devistation, not even knowing if the band would even survive the loss, an idea. Wouldn't Woody be proud to have all these folks he respected as bassists, sit in? A tribute to Woody, the Deep End project was born. This is the culmination of that project! The rest is history. Hard jamming and fresh, Mule pounds out 4 cd's of NYE rock like no one else can. Find out more about Mule, the fans, tour dates, live show download links, etc. Join us on the web at [...] See you there (after you order this cd set!) Tell 'em Baddad sent ya!

  5. If you like Allman Bros, If you like jams, if you like blues, if you like jazz, if you like good rock and roll, if you like hairy big fat rockers, you gonna like this FOUR record set, and i would like to have been there on new year eve.

    Govt Mule is great !!

5 comments about The Life & Crimes of Alice Cooper.

  1. I am in agreement with those who conclude that this is more for the fans of Alice solo than the fans of the original band. The track list reads more like a best of collection than a comprehensive set containing everything he ever did. The majority of AC fans at least as I know them are more concerned with the early AC years when ACG was a major concert draw. This is the period from Love it To Death, Killer, School's Out, Billion Dollar Babies and Muscle of Love. The first 2 albums produced for Frank Zappa's label are rarely mentioned amongst orignal ACG fans because there are no hits from either of those and also, truth be knownst, they are really bad albums that border on being unlistenable, sloppy, recordings of second rate Pink Floyd imitations that are just plain boring and directionless. Not until Love it To Death does ACG find a hit as well as their distinctive sound largely thanks to Bob Ezrin. The first 2 albums have their moments of what you might call curious interest, like playing your guitar out of tune might give you an interesting sound, but are largely unworthy of time, money or comment. Alice's solo career presents the idea that the Coop grew up and out of whatever possessed him in the first place, settled down, married and now views the onstage and offstage Alice as 2 entirely different people, and has a sense of humor about his image as it were, including his age. All very well and good but the most interesting part of ACG was the original band which is summarized here as well as the solo albums. For fans of the original band who don't want to spend money on the number of god awful solo albums he's produced, but rather prefer a comprehensive overview of the solo albums best moments and the best known cuts from the originals, this is for you. What would be nice would be 2 seperate box sets, one from each era.

  2. this collection contains both old n modern releases. i've been a mild fan o alice cooper since the late 90's n have no regrets o ever purchasin his tracks. my personal fave is the 4th disc with rockin tracks like the man behind the mask, feed my frankenstein, teenage frankenstein n more hot picks. i would highly recommend this material for all the hair metal rockin fans out there.

  3. Life And Crimes Of Alice Cooper is Awesome 4 discs of Legendary Tracks By A True Rock Legend Alice Cooper Buy It People from Bruce

  4. This box set is so amazing! I own all of his albums on both vinyl and Cd and this box set still gets played more often!
Great mix of songs on each CD.

How is Alice not in the Rock'n'Roll hall of fame (or rather shame)?
The man has put out so much great music!!!

I am a Diehard fan, you can trust me ;)

  5. there is a lot of not so good stuff on here; however, I'm not going to pan this thing because of that. This is supposed to be a career-spanning box set and I don't think some of you get that. A lot of you have been panning it because it doesn't have that much of the early stuff but to be honest, it has a sufficient amount of that stuff. I mean, look at it realistically, his glory years was from the mid-late 70's and if you think of how long he's been around, that's a small percentage. So I don't think they short changed you on the Alice Cooper band days.

Now, with that said there is a lot of stuff on here I'm not big on. A lot of the covers that's on here are just either awful or don't make sense as far as Alice performing them. And then there's just the songs off some of his infamous cds that are terrible. I don't think I even need to go in depth here. You know what I'm talking about. Everyone knows there was a period of time where Alice had some major alcohol issues which resulted in less than inspired music from the king of shock. However, the final disc is a bit of a true return, not as much as his material after this box but it is good. It's after this disc with Brutal Planet, Dragonworld and the incredible Dirty Diamonds that Alice was able to make good albums again.

This set outside of the music is just plain cool. Awesome design and a great booklet that has various quotes from other artists, some of whom are quite surprising as far as being fans of Alice like Elton John for instance. Bottom line, if you're an Alice Cooper fan, get this but I probably wouldn't recommend it to new comers. For new comers I would suggest the best of alice cooper: Mascara and Monsters because that cd really is the best of Alice Cooper if you really want to know what Alice is all about.

5 comments about Try for the Sun: The Journey of Donovan.

  1. I have always been a fan of the Scottish Singer/Songwriter Donovan, so I knew this boxset, "Try for the Sun" would bring something new to my music collection. When my order arrived, I waited until the weekend to give it a listen. Early on a Saturday morning I awoke with a craving to delve back into the past, where music, artistic and spiritual awakening all converged. Say what you want about the 1960's and early 1970's, but one can not deny that during this time the creative juices were flowing in every area, most notably in the music scene.
I lite some incense and drew back the curtains to let the morning sun in. Begining with disc one, I realized immediately that the music sounded clean and fresh, thanks to the marvelous job of the studio engineers in their task of remastering these lovely songs. The old favorites came alive with a fresh appeal, starting with his early songs such as "Catch the Wind". As there are a number of unleased songs in this boxset, I enjoyed them as if it was this was a new release from the artist.
As Donovan takes you on his musical journey from his early songs to more recent, you feel as though you are peeling through the layer of time. You also begin to realize that Donovan was truely a gifted songwriter and musical arranger. He was ahead of his time, a true innovator. He showcases his talent through a variety of styles, growing and experimenting along the way. I particularly enjoyed the songs with a celtic sound to them, for I had not heard this side of his music, drawn from his Scottish roots. Aye boyo!
The DVD on disc four was great fun to watch and illustrates Donovan's mindset at the time. I enjoyed his grecian sailing adventure, producing a longing to return to Greece myself later this year. Opa!
This boxset is a real gem for any Donovan fan or for anyone that allows themself to take a childlike, wonderous journey through his music and story telling.
Best Wishes Sir Donovan, and to all who played a part in making this boxset.

    In Friendship,
    Kevin James Devine

  2. Amazon.com did me a real favor with the better together offer. I had bought the Donovan Box Set "Try For the Sun" and the Autobiography "The Hurdy Gurdy Man". The combination was fantastic and worth every penny. But let's talk about the box set. I believe they did a fantastic job. The sound remaster quality is fantastic. It covers a huge time frame. I'm very satisfied with it. The only problem song wise is 1) it would have been nice to present all the `B' sides. 2) There is one charting single that did not make the set, though it did not break the top 100 it still is a charter, the song `Summer Day Reflection Song'. The book that came with it was not bad but I would recommend getting the autobiography for the real info. Hint for Sony and Donovan you'd be better of if you did a special edition that would include the book. So my recommendation buy the Box Set and The book.

  3. Popular forms cast that curious net comprised of the music itself and -- often more important to most listeners -- the way that music sounds. Donovan has always covered both bases exceedingly well: interesting and memorable melodies, distinctive sound. His voice, in both his lyrics and singing, is as capable of defining an era as few others are -- gratefully he's still here, still sharing his work with the world.

In terms of the past, though, this is an exceedingly well assembled collection. There are plenty of alternate takes and live versions of familiar parts of the catalog, but the re-mastering is a wonder to hear. That very particular character of early-ish analog recording, seemingly eccentric decisions about the stereo mix, early amplification and electric instrument design which many now strive to recreate in the digital domain is on display in remarkable detail and feel on every track. The presence, especially voice, is often startling in detail and power.

And in addition to demonstrating Donovan's talent, this collection does us the important service of demonstrating that not every example of popular musical forms are intrinsically transient and, as is so important to maintaining sales today, ultimately and rapidly disposable. Certainly much of the music here, and many of the ideas within and behind it, deserve and seem to be achieving sustained interest and longevity.

This is a great set, a perfect complement for his recent book, "The Hurdy Gurdy Man" and the equally recent and excellent EMI remasters of his early lps. You'll even get a sampling from "Sutras" which, it's hard to believe, somehow finds itself out of print...

  4. The packaging made the item even more special, as it was a gift for someone. Very pleased. Great price. Thank you.

  1. I picked this up at my local FRIES and Electronics. I am sure you have one where you live. Anyways onto the review. I had already heard most of the songs off this set thanks to a cd burner and mp3s, but i wanted better quality. This box has some rare live cuts of songs and assorted rarities from different stages of the Doors career. It even has some songs of the ACETATE they shopped around to record companies before they got signed. To actually get that phsysical acitate in my hands just would be great. The live disc is nice too, but it is infact not LIVE with an audience. The live disc is mostly the doors rehearsing at The Fillmore or somewhere with added crowd noise and studio overdubs. They really screwed us by lying about it on the outside packaging and even going as far to talk about it in the nice booklet you get inside the box! The last disc is just another greatist hits disc basically. You could just use the last disc as a coaster or shoot it.

So to sum this up is it worth it in the end. Yes it is if you are a die hard fan then get this. If you have just discovered The Doors i recommend Perception. Get the ORIGINAL PERCEPTION (Box) it has DVD-A 5.1 surround mixes. Enough said.

  2. Why is this box set so hated.I understand that the fourth disck sucks but look at disk 1 ,2 and 3. they have a lot of unreleasd songs on it.
some of the song might not ever be put on album for example the demo was on the box. i wish they had just made one cd of the demo but o well
you get to hear some studio songs that wernt on any album and some live songs. i didnt like it how they add the band favoriets cd they should have did another live cd or something butt his box set grows on you after you listin two it a few times so buy or dont....

  3. There is a raw fever that exists below of the skin of a man, in the corners of the mind hidden past all sense, its the subconsious. We know this is the legacy of THE DOORS to slip ever so softly ever so violently into the relm seldom found by the dying masses and that is exactly why this box set is perfect, every other box set has that same old shiney packaging and remastered same olds and dont get me wrong that is phenom in itself but for those cats scratching below the surface of a culture that calming; excessive fusion of minds own creative energy and if ever you wished just to pick apart and dive deep inside the cornerstones of the creative world lingering behind the eyes of these four fragile members better known as The Doors then just just listen to these sounds. All the b-side warped out fixings, all the hidden scraps of infinite creation, all the reject gems, and all the raw power of a man facing down a sea of freaks........in other words little monkeys BUY THIS BOX SET!!!

  4. Live in new york, that's an amazing live-cd! That one gets 5 stars..the rest is just like any of the greatest hits...to answer the previous review,Smokie is a lot worse than the doors on releasing Greatest Hits!! i've seen about 20 greatest hits with smokie and some of them are even 3 discs! Yuck!

  5. Dont let the negative reviews keep you from getting this box set from The Doors. Sure the sound quality does vary but its everything that made the group appealing. The live disc is the BEST DOORS live set regardless of where its from and has great renditions of Celebration of the Lizzard and The End. The third disc has a great overall feel of some of the Doors best songs with superb live cuts like Crystal Ship from The Matrix and a nice cheerful song about death called Someday Soon. The first disc has the infamous Five to One from the notorious Miami performance and great renditions of Queen of the Highway and Who Scared you. Sure this set isnt perfect. Rock is dead sounds nothing more than a disjointed mess of recording space and Mental Floss is Jim's poetic muses at its worst but overall there is much to like about this set. Is it perfect? Nope, its everything that was great and pompous, chilling and dysfuntional. In short this Box Set is The Doors as personal as a fingerprint warts and all for those who wish to hear.
