  1. I like several of Petra's compiliations! Especially "Petraphonics" and that's not dinosaurs either. Layer upon layer of guitar chords and pounding drums! The album arts on these albums are really cool.

  2. Petra is a ROCK band. They've cranked out hits for over three decades now. Secular arena rock fans should have no problem listening to these guys. They fit perfectly into anyone's rock catalogue and sound right comfortable there. They are perhaps the most influential Christian band in any genre. You could make an argument for Amy Grant in the pop genre, but she sang secular tunes to reach the masses whereas Petra has always been about the Gospel.

Though I enjoy many of the songs with Greg X. Volz on this particular album (some of the best ones on hear are fronted by him), I'm one of those latter-day Petra fans who started listening to the band after John Schlitt took over. Don't forget that Bob Hartman is the true driving force behind this band. Responsible for almost all of this band's tunes and usually contributing something to the ones he didn't write, Hartman deserves a special place in the halls of Christian rock history.

Favorites of mine include "Judas' Kiss," "All Fired Up," "Stand Up" and "He Came, He Saw, He Conquered." Other big hits include "Counsel of the Holy" and "Shakin' The House."

If you enjoy arena rock in the vein of Kansas, you're sure to enjoy Petra. They are one of the best things to come out of Christian music and they will keep influencing bands for many decades to come.

  3. First off, there are way to many Petra 'best of' cds out there. I am sure it's the record companies decision and Petra had little to say on the subject. With so many out there you might have a little trouble deciding which to go with. I would highly recommend going with this one as it is more complete than the other ones. You get all the essentials of Petra like "Shakin' The House" "Hit You Where You Live" "Judas Kiss" and "Angel Of Light". This best of cd features both singers and gives equal time to each one.

This is a good one to get for those wanting a good compilation that has songs from the pre Beyond Belief Petra. Actally you could buy this, "Beyond Belief" "Unseen Power" "Wake-Up Call" "No Doubt" "God Fixation" "Jekyl And Hyde" and you would have all the Petra you need. Maybe "Captured In Time And Space" to get live Petra songs like "Grave Robber" and "Speak To The Sky" would make this complete. That's my opinion and die hard fans would probably say "This Means War" is an essential album to buy also.

Stand out songs: "Hit You Where You Live" "Shakin'The House" and "Angel Of Light"

And yes, I know even this compilation is not perfect(It needs "This Means War" and a few more from "On Fire" in my opinion) but it is the best out there so far. If you can find the long out of print box set "War And Rememberance" then great, because that is another one worth including in your collection.

  4. I have been a big fan of Petra for a long time and really enjoy their music. All the songs on here are excellent. Now with the band breaking up after a 33 year career, I started to play all my Petra albums. This one is one of my favorites because it has a great rock beat and the pace is consistent. There were only a few songs I didn't like. If you want to hear one of Petra's best albums, I highly recommend you buy this CD.

  5. Right, firstly the songs on this album are all rocky so get used to it. Ballad likers wont bat an eye over this album! Althought they should because these are some of the biggest songs ever penned by petra during the eighties! I was well glad to see they had "Killing My Old Man" and "Angel Of Light" on this one, two of my fav sopngs when Greg was lead singer. But why is This Means War not on here for? That is another very heavy rocker?!! Dont ask me. But still this album boasts memorable tracks like "Judas Kiss" and "Shakin The House" which should nto be missed. Please people out there get this album now. Get away fromt he world and rock and get on your knees and fight like a man!!

4 comments about Wedding Album.

  1. wonderful songs, great music, christian theme; need i say more? we love this cd!

  2. We were disappointed by this album. The songs were pitifully uncreative and uninspiring. We are still searching for some quality music to reflect God's place as the focus of our marriage. For anyone interested in buying this album, it might be worth your while to get a feel for the various artists featured on the album, and make sure this is the kind of music you like. In general, the musical stylings harkened back to the forgettable days of 80's pop-Christian music. On a positive note, the cover art on the album wasn't all that bad.

  3. I found this in the local public library, checked it out, and loved it. So did my fiancee'. We've been looking for it in the stores but cannot find it anywhere. We want it played at our wedding reception.

  4. Wedding Album is an excellent CD. My daughter was recently married and the photographer for the wedding does his wedding pictures in a video for the bridal couple and the parents of the couple to view the proofs. Our photographer used "Wedding Album" as the music background for the video. Everyone loved the pictures and the music. Everyone wanted to know what CDs the music was taken from. I have looked in all our music stores and could not find it. I was very excited to find it on the WEB. Thanks for a wonderful CD. Loved all the songs. Can't hardly wait to get my copy of the CD.

5 comments about Shake.

  1. Being a Petra`s Fan, it was easy to put my attention to this cd. The song that caught me was "Show me the way", since it`s video was aired by ZMusic Television. The video itself was very interesting and creative, which made me even more interested on getting the album. Definitly a beautiful album. My favorites are: Wake the dead, Show me the way, Carry the burden, The Hard Way, The road to calvary. High quality album. Unfortunately, "Unfit for Swine" is a VERY different style. I consider "Shake" like a very sweet album, and "Unfit" is a bitter one, very weird style.

  2. If I could sum up what this album is in one word, it would be WOW! Amazingly, I just recently bought this album for the first time but I've always wanted it. I was a little leary, as I own "Unfit for Swine", and I was disappointed with that album. In my opinion, *that* album only had 2 or 3 good songs on it. I don't listen to it much.

But "Shake" is soooooo much better! It's actually weird to think that "Shake" came before "Unfit for Swine", since the two are so different musically.

Every single song on this album is "turn it up" quality. The ballads are beautiful, and the rock songs ROCK! My favorites are "Wake the Dead", "Don't Look Back", "Carry the Burden", "Inside of You", and "The Hard Way". Even though this album is almost ten years old, it is hardly outdated, and I strongly recommend it if you happen to find a copy of it.

Petra is my favorite Christian band, and John Schlitt is awesome. This is definately an album to keep in the CD player. You might want to buy two: one for the house and one for your car!

  3. There is a very narrow scope of music that I like - Christian Album Rock/Arena Rock. Petra in the John Schlitt era and David and the Giants are about the only dependable bands to put out songs that guarantee I will be able to listen to them. The singer from David and the Giants put out a solo CD which I did not like - gave away. John Schlitt did a solo Cd and then another - SHAKE. I must say these 2 CD's are as good AND BETTER (if that were possible) as any of the Petra CD's. And from what I previously said about my narrow taste and love of Petra this is quite a recommendation for SHAKE and the other, Unfit for Swine. Shake is an awesome CD that will get years of play in my house. Killer CD's! Next best is possbly Petra-Revival

  4. I bought this CD in 1995 when it was released. It has become one of my favorites. John has a distinctive rock voice. It's cool to have music that rocks and is still Christian, which was Petra's style all the way.

This CD has a mixture of styles. Wake The Dead is an awesome hard rockin' song that makes you want to turn up the volume, yet still delivers a powerful Christian message: Salvation!

My favorite song on the CD is Inside Of You. So many of us have settled instead of having what we want. To me it reaffirms that God has given us dreams and wants and it was not His intention for someone else to come along and tell us we can't soar on paper wings. It speaks to the heart and to the inner child in all of us.

I am a die-hard Petra fan, both with John and with Greg X. Voltz. SHAKE becomes more and more timely as the years go by. This is a definite must for anyone who enjoys and/or collects Christian Rock.

  5. I have to admit I was hesitant to pick up any PETRA cd with their new (at that time) lead singer. But I did and I loved his sound. So when I saw this solo album I decided to take a chance on it as well. And all I can say is THIS CD ROCKS!! My 2 favorite songs are WAKE THE DEAD and ONE ON ONE. Their messages are powerful and the guitar rifts are excellent. As a matter of fact, all the lyrics and music on this cd are powerful. Now I have to find Mr.Schlitt's 2nd solo effort. Another gem I'm sure.

5 comments about Lovin' the Day.

  1. I'd first heard Out Of Eden in the spring of 1996, during my first year at the University of California at Santa Barbara. Someone had made me a mixtape filled with Inspirational music, and two acts from that tape grabbed my ear: Anointed, and Out Of Eden. The OOE song that grabbed me instantly was the drumcapella version of "Gotee's Groovin". It was simple, funky, and consistent. I was hooked.

Now in 2002, I have yet to tire of this album. To be honest, every time I play it, I love it even more. Now that you have endured my endless raving about the wonderfulness (I know that isn't a word!) of this album, let's jump right into my review...

The album begins with a slightly altered "Lovely Day", the breezy and powerful Bill Withers remake that never fails to put me in a good mood. Soothing yet energetic, "Lovely Day" is easily one of the best songs on the album. Next up is "Come and Take My Hand", a decent uptempo that goes for more of the funky feel that makes up the rest of this album.

"Show Me" is hands down my favorite. Lyrically, the song is powerful and poignant. The music and the harmonies are splendid, especially when the background vocals sing, "Show Me, Another Way, Show Me, Another Wa-ay" during the second chorus. I love the percussion too. "Show Me" is my favorite, my favorite, my favorite...(did I mention that "Show Me" is my favorite?)

"3 bros w/no fros" is an interlude that lets us know that this album is a family affair, and it works. "Good Thing" has a frantic, disco feel to it that would probably work really well at a roller-rink. "Good Thing" is also a favorite of mine. The original version of "Gotee's Groovin" is cool, but I like the drumcapella version is much better. "Bandwagon" is excellent; it was the second OOE song I'd heard on that mixtape my friend made for me back in 1996. (Thanks Hawanya!)

Up next is "There Is A Love", a beautifully plush, pro-abstinence ballad that communicates its message in a powerful, yet gentle way. "There Is A Love" is an amazingly sweet song folks, please believe it. On this cut, OOE sounds a bit like SWV...The next track is a nice rap by Joy (or Danielle). We move onto "Heart Of Hearts" which holds its own. However, "A Friend" is a quaint, mellow and warm midtempo that features wonderful background vocals and motifs. I really love "A Friend" one too...

"Force Like This" does indeed sound powerful, and I like it. The "Lovely Vibe" interlude is fantastic, and it amazes me that something so utterly funky would be included on this project - then again, everything about OOE's first album is more on the funky side. We close the CD with the sonically perfect drumcapella version of "Gotee's Groovin", and then we're done.

I own all three albums by "Out Of Eden" (1994, 1996, 1999), and I plan to get their latest album as soon as it comes out. 'Lovin The Day' is the most R&B/Hip-hop oriented OOE album of them all. Their other two (especially 1999's 'No Turning Back') seem to lean towards Pop music. At any rate, this is the album that started it all, and paved the way for the wonderfully "conscious" record company that Gotee Records has grown into today...

  2. This CD is awesome. All of Out of Eden's CD are. I have all except one. The voices blend nicely, and they are putting out a very positive message about God. Out Of Eden ROCKS!

  3. Lisa, Andrea, and Joy Kimmey have created a superb debut of R&B similar to that of TLC and Brandy. Their voices blend into beautiful, haunting, and grooving melodies sure to get you singing the rest of the day. Did you know Brandy interviewed them on Moesha, and decided to put the first part of "Lovely Day" on her answering machine? These 3 girls just made the cover of the August 1999 CCM Magazine for No Turning Back. Their concern for society and love for God are genuine. This debut is catchy, groovy, dancy, and all-out Jesus! Give it a listen and see if you don't agree!

  4. I love Out of Eden's new Cd.I love all of their cd's:-)I espically like the song Lovely Day it always makes me feel better during a hectic day.

  5. The sisters are great singers, and they praise God in all their songs. I'd love to hear more of them!

5 comments about Slowly Going the Way of the Buffalo.

  1. as a huge mxpx fan and listening to these guys for the last 11 years, this CD gets straight to the point with great punk smashing music and clever lyrics that raises eyebrows.
my personal favorite band and one of the greatest of all time in punk music.

  2. I'm surprised to see that a lot of the reviews of this album claim that this was not when MxPx was at their peak. Slowly Going the Way of the Buffalo, the follow-up to their breakout alubm Life In General, is easily their best effort to date. I can't say much about guitar or bass (since I know nothing about them), but Yuri's drums on this album are intense! Mike's vocals and lyrics are slightly more polished than those of earlier albums and the band hadn't yet hit complete "pop punk" status. This album is some good fun rock. If you're a fan of MxPx and haven't heard Slowly Going the Way of the Buffalo yet, you HAVE to buy it now--this is MxPx at their peak, and it's awesome.

  3. The first two songs I ever heard from MxPx were Grey Skies Turn Blue and Wrecking Hotel Rooms and I completely loved them. I was looking for more of the same when I bought this album and what I found was all fast, hard rock. I bought this album because it was so highly recommended both here and on various christian rock playlists. Now it's not like I don't like this style of music, it's just that virtually every song sounds the same because of the same overbearing drum rhythm. I'm hoping that it grows on me, but at the moment I'm kind of repulsed by it.

If anyone knows any songs or artists that are closer in style to the first two songs I mentioned, please email me at erpartlan@yahoo.com. Haha, don't worry, I'm not a kid, I just don't have an account. Also, can anyone tell me if the other songs in Panic sound anything like the songs in this one?

  4. While not MxPx's best, this is still a great album. My favorite songs are The Final Slowdance, Inches From Life, and Tommorow's Another Day, plus a few others that I can't think of the names right now. This is a good album for any MxPx fan, but if you are new to MxPx you should start with Let It Happen, or Life In General.

  5. This was one of those cds that you would memorize every word to and stand in front of your mirror playing air guitar in your underwear.

If you know what I am talking about, then this cd is for you.
