  1. Amy Grant is one of the greatest Christian female artists ever. This collection includes some of the best songs of her carriere between the years 1979 and 1986. The only album that hasn't any of songs is Amy Grant's self-titled which is also her first one. However, we can hear piece of one of the songs in "Ageless Medley" called "Old Man's Rubble". It's a great medley, it also has pieces of "Too Late", "I'm Gonna Fly", "Walking Away With You", "El Shaddai", "My Father's Eyes", "Sing Your Praise to the Lord", and "I Have Decided". Usually I don't like medleys but this is one of the greatest medleys I've ever heard. The collection has many of greatest Amy's songs including four of her best-known gospel album "Age to Age" - "Sing Your Praise to the Lord", "I Have Decided", the peaceful ones "In A Little While", and "El Shaddai". I'm sure that these are the four most essential tracks from the album. "Too Late" and "I'm Gonna Fly" are live versions. It was an interesting decision to take these from live album - some may hate it some may like it. "All I Ever Have to Be" is a touching ballad but very short and meaningless - there would have been better choices from "Never Alone", defintely. "Father's Eyes" is maybe her best song! It is so touching, great, and humble. I like the album "My Father's Eyes" very much, and would have taken at least one more song from it. The three songs from "Straight Ahead" are all great! "Angels" is a funny-sounding song by melody, and the words are very encouraging. "Thy Word" and "Where Do You Hide Your Heart" are classic songs and defintely are great for this collection. "Find a Way" is a little bit simple song, and I wouldn't have taken it for this collection. "Everywhere I Go" is a good song but it seemed that Amy had lost a little bit of her energy with "Unguarded". The NEW song "Stay for Awhile" is a little bit boring and too long - a terrible opener. "Love Can Do" is a great song, remembers me from the early years! "Emmanuel" is the only song taken from Amy's Christmas album" - it's a good song. A good collection but I would have chosen some other songs instead of "Stay for Awhile", "Find a Way", "I'm Gonna Fly", and "All I Ever Have to Be".
Stars: Father's Eyes, Sing Your Praise to the Lord, Love Can Do, Too Late

  2. AMy Grants early work is some of her best if not her best. Nothing compares with her early pop/praise songs. They are timeless classics. Standouts on this are her cover of the song "El Shaddai" "Thy Word" and "Fathers Eyes." This CD contains 17 songs and is one of the best albums of the 80s. Some of the songs are a little dated but they still have that factor that makes them listenable today. A must for all fans of any type of Christian music.

  3. Amy Grant's music contains many great Christian pop hits. Her voice is superb. Many of her songs are classics.

This collection contains many of her all time best including such gems as these: Stay For Awhile, Everywhere I Go, Angels, Thy Word, Sing Your Praise To The Lord, In A Little While, El Shaddai, and Father's Eyes.

No contemporary Christian music collection would be complete without an Amy Grant collection such as this. I recommend it.

  4. Hi. This is a good CD, it's full of good songs. I enjoy listening to it. Amy Grant has grear voice. A lot of my friends has this album too. I like her version of El Shaddi.

  5. If you like the music of the 80's, this one's for you! I like this album more than Amy's more recent music (even though her more recent music is also great). The best song on the album is "Sing your praise to the Lord" which has a nice "twist" to it. I can really recommend this CD

  1. The Fisrt cd is alot better than this one, but this one is still okay. I only Liked one song on this disc and it is. Track 4. Will The Circle Be Unbroken/I'll Fly Away/ Jesus Loves Me. Don't get me wrong the music is beautiful, but i think the first one is alot better.

  2. Awesome.... Again! Power In The Blood, such a blessing! I've had this cd since the release date... Still one I play often!

  3. A beautiful CD, and my personal favorite. This CD was a tremendous comfort to me and my family after the loss of my brother. We had selections played at his services that held special meaning for us, and made his passing easier to accept. Beautiful, Soothing, Comforting, Worshipful.

  4. Now this is what a country gospel album should sound like! Excellent. You'll hear no complaints from me.

  5. Anyone who enjoys country, gospel or those old hymns from church will love this collection!

  1. that is extremely hard to find! Smokie's voice is so inspiring. Had to get this for a family member, finally found it on Amazon.

  2. Smokie Norful has a voice to be reckoned with and a heart for God. "I Need You Now" quickly became one of my favorite songs / albums. For so many people, it became somewhat of a "National Anthem." It was a cry in the dark to God saying through and in everything I've been through, Lord I need you NOW! Not a second from now. Not a minute from now. Not an hour or another day, but Lord RIGHT NOW. This song quickly flew up the charts and was played, not only via Christain broadcast stations but secular as well. It holds no boundaries, when it comes to our plea to God. I would definitely recommend Smokie's CD.

  3. I received the Cd "Nothing Without You" from a friend. I loved it so much that I decided to purchase 'I Need You Know'. I'm so glad that I did. This CD is just as nice. It's music to feed your spirit. I like to call it 'music for the soul'. I'm here in Iraq and felt that I needed some music on my IPOD to help me make it through the days here. He has an outstanding voice. For the last 2 weeks, his music is all I've been listening to. I you are a fan of contemporary gospel music, you will love this.

  4. Very enjoyable CD! Smokie really does a great job with this one. I had to listen to it a few times to get with it, but once I got "it's all about you" in my head it stuck there good. Of course "I need you now" is great, and I really like the trad gospel track "Praise Him" He has a sweet voice and his piano playin aint bad either.

  5. The CD is excellent...really ministered to me. The CD arrived safely. Smokie's voice is great. Will order other CDs by him. Good listening -- encouraging.

  1. Greetings Fans!

This was an on time project, get the CD.....
I rate it 3 of 5 simply because it was not all original songs from scratch.

  2. I really can't say enough about this album. From the song writing to the masterful arrangements to the slick production quality, Smokie is firing on all cylenders. If the original Earth, Wind and Fire were cutting albums today they would probably sound a lot like this one. I don't care what faith you are, this album is worth a listen. Check it out!

  3. This is the first time I've heard Smokie Norful's work. I'm familiar with the name but wasn't familiar with is songs. My best friend sent this CD too me here in Iraq to feed my spirit. Oh it was definitely what I needed. My favorite song is track 7 "In The Middle". I've listened to this song a million times already.

I am anxious to purchase his other CD's.

  4. I LOVE this c.d. This man is anointed and truly led by the Holy Spirit!!!!

    ~BLESSED

  5. THIS CD IS POWERFUL YOU WILL BE MOVED BY SMOKIE NOREFUL! MY SISTER KEPT ASKING ME TO PURCHASE TO CD AND I FINALLY PURCHASED IT! I'M JUST SO MOVED BY THE WHOLE CD BUT THE SONG THAT REALLY SPEAKS THE TRUTH IS "I KNOW TO MUCH ABOUT HIM". SMOKIE HAS AN BEAUTIFUL VOICE. THIS CD IS A MUST HAVE!

  1. I don't think perfection in music is possible, but this comes pretty close. I know this is not everyone's cup of tea, but if you try this tea and it is the kind of tea you like, and this tea is just the right temperature, and you just happen to be in the mood for tea...well then brother, this is some good friggin' tea!

If this is anywhere near your taste in music you must give it a few concentrated listens - don't listen to it while you tend to your compost heap or weave your hemp blankets on your old rickety loom - just do nothing for about an hour except listen to this album...and then a day or two later do it again...it will grow on you like a fungus...perhaps an organic fungus...maybe you can eat the fungus and you will have discovered a new sustainable food source.

This is a great CD - I would tell anyone to buy this album, unless they were deaf, because that wouldn't be funny.

  2. When I first listened to this CD I was felt that they were softer than I expected, but once I decided to simply listen to it for what it had, I was amazed.

This CD has a relaxed, sophisticated feel to it which makes is great for doing homework/studying or just simply relaxing.

There is nothing new I can really add to the reviews of this CD (Clearly most people really like it), it is just simply great...really great.

  3. I cannot remember a band's first three albums each being so individually distinct and yet each so completely successful. `Brother Sun Sister Moon' is a more accessible album than `Catch for us the Foxes' or `A-->B'. My wife liked it by her third time through (where it probably took 20 listens and a concert for her to lukewarm up to Foxes). I have started giving it as a gift to those who I think might not put in the solid six to ten listens it took me to fall in love with MWY's earlier stuff. Catch for us the Foxes remains my favorite album but Brother Sun Sister Moon takes a close second place

Gone are the ubiquitous references to suicide in favor allusions to gardening, soil and spiders. Aaron seems oddly at home in more mature, settled themes and the musical style is softer and makes increased use of a thing other artists like to call melody. From the opening sounds of a soft but building rainfall it was clear that we were getting yet another experimental album, and we were better off for it. Honestly, the tone was very Franciscan, if you will (damaged but life giving spirituality, animals as messengers of beauty and hard, rewarding work in the soil) as its title might suggest. Yet there is still plenty of the gruff, disorienting syncopated poetry that made me fall in love with Foxes. I think it is the lovely strangeness of the style that gives these CD's the refreshing quality of inexhaustible listenability.

Messes of Men is my run away favorite song, a painfully insightful track about restlessness and contentment, through an uncannily successful metaphor. In a Sweater Poorly Nit is next (see excerpt below). Cminor is a deeply spiritual song with painfully honest lyrics. I love that Aaron can weave poetry about a little mouse, his lonely father and his sexuality (or lack there of) into a single beautiful verse. In a market Dimly Lit has many of the best lines. There really isn't a bad song on the CD. I recommend it highly.

    you're a door without a key,
    a field without a fence
you made a holy fool of me
and I've thanked you ever since.
    if she comes circling back
    we'll end where we'd begun
like two pennies on the train track
    the train crushed into one
or if I'm a crown without a king,
if I'm a broken open seed
if I come without a thing,
then I come with all I need
    -Sweater Poorly Knit

  4. Good album.
Lots of stuff already said in previous reviews.
    It's simply great band.
I am waiting for more albums to come...

  5. I've been a fan of mewithoutYou for almost two years now. I got "Catch For Us The Foxes" and liked it. I bought this album not really expecting much improvement, but let me tell you, mewithoutYou has made leaps and bounds between the two records. This album stands as a cohesive album rather than just 13 rock songs randomly thrown together, which is what "Foxes" sort of felt like at times. This album is full of experimentation, as there are more instruments, more singing, even vocal harmonizing, new and creative rhythms--it's really a dramatic improvement in the band's sound. The lyrics are as sharp as ever, managing to be poetic and accessible at the same time.

The only drawback to this album is that Aaron Weiss, the singer, can be very irritating if you don't buy into what he's saying. Not that he's spreading propaganda or preaching fire and brimstone, but he's just very open and honest, and makes himself so emotionally vulnerable that it's hard to listen to if you can't let yourself become vulnerable along with him. Yeah, I know it sounds dumb. But it's the truth. This album will turn you off if you won't let it under your skin.

So, if you're prepared to let yourself be carried away wherever the album takes you, then by all means, buy it. Even if you're not prepared to hear Aaron bare all his emotions, you can probably still get it and let it grow on you.

    I recommend this album.

  1. ...and so is Krystal! This album has such many great lyrics, so intelligent Christian rock! It's great to find an artist that can compete with Rebecca St. James. I think after two great albums she has really chances to make classic albums. You could say that it is almost impossible start thinking Avril Lavigne after you've heard Krystal's style and voice. But it is also true that many artists remind us of some others. The good thing is that many Krystal fans could recommend this for Avril Lavigne fans...I'm one of Avril Lavigne fan, you know. This album really rocks! "Collide" is such a rocking song - I think it's one of her best songs. "The Beauty of Grace" was the first song I heard from her. I was impressed right away! She has an amazing voice! Such a good message! "Love Is on the Run", "Stand And Scream" and "Only You Make Me Happy" are other very rocking songs. "Hallelujah" is a great closing ballad - actually it is the only ballad in this album. This album continues the same style as her self-titled debut album.
Stars: Collide, The Beauty of Grace, Love Is on the Run

  2. The cover can be deceptive, but trust me, Krystal still ROCKS! The cover looks like the early Britney, but Krystal is far from that lost soul. Take a listen and check out her vids on Yahoo! You will not be disappointed, unless you miss one of her concerts this summer....

  3. I bought this CD because I liked Krystal's first CD, but wow, "Dying for a Heart" was much better than even her first album!

Her voice is beautiful and unique and by the songs you can tell she has a passion for God.

You would think (as I did at first) that she would have more appeal to the younger group, but hey, I liked it! I think this CD will appeal to any generation. Enjoy!

  4. Krystal Meyer's second album is another quality effort. She has a beautiful voice that she uses in positive ways. Her songs are solid Christian pop/rock. She makes it clear that Christ is her focus. She does that while making very pleasing music.

There are several very good songs on this CD. One particular standout is, 'The Beauty of Grace'.

I would recommend this album. It is one that will be particularly good for teenage girls/young women.

  5. It was inevitable that people would compare Krystal Meyers to Avril Lavigne, but honestly after listening to this cd (and listening and listening...) I have to say that Krystal is in a whole different leauge than Avril. She is exceptional on this 2nd album. I also reccomend checking out the video for "Beauty of Grace" its the best music video I've seen so far in 07 (in ANY genre!) Way to go Krystal!

  1. This is a great new CD from the equally great Michael English. He does a wonderful job on a great selection of songs. I'm so glad that he is back recording Christian music again & is enjoying singing for the Lord & has been accepted in the Christian Music community. He has an awesome voice.

  2. Well finally this is the one ! You know when they ask you wich album you would take to a deserted island, if you only could take one (and there would be a cd player on the island). Well I would take 'the prodigal comes home'. I play it every single day.
What's so great about it ? The texts are great, for a starter. Every text is like a poem or a prayer or a quote you could use to lift someone up.
I like the music ! And I like Michel's voice. His voice has that somewhat rough honesty, with a passion coming through that gives me goosebumps.
I couldn't possibly say which song is may favorite. There is a song for every mood and every struggle. And every song is uplifting, hopegiving, encouraging, heart opening ...
I hope a new CD will come soon. Or a dvd, that would be great !

  3. I believe this is the best Michael English album since "Hope" all those years ago. When God truly changes a heart, He blesses it. I know there are those who have not liked the style of the music (too 90's or not original in style) but the lyrics in these songs are so powerful and to me they are a great blessing. We all have struggled and we all have fallen, this album reminds us that God is waiting to restore us. I was truly blessed.

  4. I encourage all who can to buy this CD. It is possibly the best Michael has done, at least second to best. :o) It is not only beautiful but so touching when you realize the songs are right from the heart about his road to redemption. If you've read his book and then listen to this CD, I'm sure it'll bring tears.

Michael has a unique and wonderfully amazing voice and has indeed been blessed by God. Praise God for Michael English!

  5. This cd is awesome. I'm a huge Michael English fan and I'm very pleased with this album. I just saw him in concert three days ago, and he is still a great singer. I am so proud that he is back on his feet. I have waited a long time for this cd and was not disappointed in it. I don't care if he didn't write any of the songs. They tell his life story and what God has brought him through. Great job Michael!!!!!!!!

  1. I love everything about sola scriptura.I've found it to be very moving in some places, almost to the point of tears. This cd takes me on a spiritual and historical journey. It encourages me to stand up for God's word which very often, is difficult to do in todays world.Anyway, I think Neal has written some of his best songs on sola scriptura.it's a phenominal cd. highly recommended.

  2. the story:

I believe that Morse made this album because of the impact of what the story is about....i dont think he believes martin luther was right, but maybe because all religions are the way they are now because of luther...so why not tell about it....

    the music:

i had a slight headache after i listen to the entire album in my car one day, this whole album is the intro to "author of confusion" time 50....all the way through....very heavy, very loud, great harmonies, great solos, tons of emotions...wish neal had broken it up into 12 or 13 small songs, rather than 3 monster 20 and 30 minutes songs, mostly because fast forwarding 27 minutes into a song to hear the ending is a little redundant after a while...

cant wait to hear the next album....

  3. Neal Morse is the best thing that has happened in music since the Lennon and Macartney break up. If you read this review Neal,I just want to thank you for the music you have given us, and for the music that is yet to come!

  4. Okay,, the subject matter is "controversial".So what ? The music's the thing. Hard , heavy , very entertaining. Take the lyrics for one person's thoughts / opinions and ENJOY the quality of the musicianship.

  5. A great masterpiece by one of the best musicians that are active at this days!
    Good job, Morse :)

5 comments about Who We Are Instead.

  1. There is only one Jars of Clay CD that I think is better than this one *Eleventh Hour* but I really love "Faith Enough" the lyrics are amazing! "Sunny Days" was my theme song for nearly two years and "Show you Love" has caught on with friends *christian and non*

  2. Let me start off by saying I am a fan of ALL types of music. As far as CCM, I love Jars & I like Third Day, but that's about it. I am 43 years old and a music fanatic. I own about 1,000 CD's and I love all types of music (even hip hop and hard core metal). My favorite bands are Metallica, Smashing Pumpkins, Pink Floyd, U2, Tool, and Jars of Clay (so you can see the wide variety). I own 6 Jars CD's and this one is the BEST. In fact, this is probably my "desert island" CD. This CD is VERY uplifting (like all Jars CD's). I am a Christian (Catholic) and lover of music!

  3. Jars of Clay is one of those super groups that can sound great in a variety of genres.

On this CD, their sound is acoustic and quite mellow. It features some outstanding harmony.

Some of the standout songs on this album include the following: Sunny Days, Trouble Is, Show You Love, and Jealous Kind. The latter two are particularly good. Another one that they do very well on here is a cover of America's Lonely People.

Jars of Clay has several excellent albums. This is certainly one of them. I recommend it. I also suggest checking out several of their others.

  4. When Jars of Clay released their fifth studio album, Who We Are Instead, in November 2003, many fans initially dubbed it a return to the sound of their first album. They were wrong, and some of them later revised their opinion. This album is a mostly downbeat work that is challenging both lyrically and musically. At the same time, it could alienate many fans, but those who persist with it will find their efforts rewarding.

The album contains two songs that are arguably Jars of Clay's most optimistic lyrically. The band leads off with "Sunny Days," a song with mostly cheerful lyrics (even Jars' "sunny" songs always have some touch of melancholy in them), complete with an allusion to Sesame Street. At the midpoint of the album, "Show You Love" is almost as upbeat and was the album's first (and most successful) single. (It later was used in trailers for the 2004 film Spanglish.) "Sunny Days," however, is lyrically and musically the more impressive track.

The other eleven tracks are considerably more melancholic. Lyrically, they focus on themes standard to the band: human brokenness/frailty and the great distance between God's holiness and human sinfulness. "Trouble Is" contains the album title and neatly sums up the album's theme: "Man, the trouble is/We don't know who we are instead." The other songs generally explore this theme in a myriad of introspective ways -- as Jars of Clay did consistently through every album prior to their most recent album, Good Monsters. (Good Monsters keeps some of this emphasis but also takes the band in some new directions lyrically.)

While the lyrics are almost uniformly excellent, this album really stands out musically. This is not the acoustic musical journey of the band's much loved self-titled debut, nor is it a return to the sound of any other previous album. Rather, the album is chock full of slow, deliberately plodding songs that head the band in a folk/roots/blues/gospel/country direction. As such, it's challenging, and you may either love the music or hate it. If you want high-energy pop/rock, your one bone on this album is "I'm in the Way," a song so jarringly different musically from the remaining tracks that it should have been a b-side.

In all of this, the band reveals their musical influences. A cover of America's "Lonely People" makes the band's love for 1970s folk pop explicit if anyone somehow missed it in their previous albums. "Sunny Days" is lyrically and musically evocative of a typical Christine McVie tune from Fleetwood Mac's Mirage (1982) era. (The opening riff and the guitar and keyboard playing throughout are very Macish.) "I'm in the Way" sounds like a distant, much faster-paced relative of Toad the Wet Sprocket's "Good Intentions" from the early 1990s.

Regardless of their influences, Jars of Clay certainly do not lack ambition. The album's most complex and epic song, "Faith Enough," essentially is a "Worlds Apart" (a much-loved tune from their debut album) for the whole world as opposed to an individual. "Amazing Grace" steals the title of the classic hymn and provides a more melancholic take on the same subject matter. "Jealous Kind" examines a topic rarely (if ever before -- I cannot think of one instance) covered by contemporary Christian artists: God's jealous love for his people.

The latter two songs are graced by vocals from the always welcome Ashley Cleveland. There's a surprise, though: lead singer Dan Haseltine's vocals actually prove the equal of Cleveland's. Some Jars of Clay listeners have criticized Haseltine's voice as being childlike and too sweet. I think there's a smidgeon of truth to those complaints; while I like Haseltine's voice, it hasn't sounded in the past like he's stretched himself very much. That's not true on these two songs. It's amazing to hear Haseltine in his own way match Cleveland's formidable vocals. He, and not Cleveland, makes these two songs work. (Cleveland's presence is a bonus.) When he sings "You know I've been unfaithful/With lovers in lines" near the end of "Jealous Kind," it seems to come from a deep well within him and is wrenching.

How much you like Who We Are Instead may well depend on your musical tastes. Do you like a slower-paced album full of thoughtful lyrics that delves into a variety of musical genres but almost entirely avoids a pop/rock sound? If so, you may love this album. Personally speaking, I've found that while I don't listen to it regularly, I'm always amazed by how good it is when I do give it my attention. Lyrically and musically, it's nothing short of excellent.

Postscript: An early special edition of the album featured an extra disc with two additional songs and special internet features. The two songs are both very good to excellent, even though the first one, "Tonight," is labeled a B-side. "Tonight" is catchy and upbeat musically; since it fits in well musically with the rest of the album, it would have been a better choice for the album than "I'm in the Way." More significant is "Shipwrecked," a tale of a life on the rocks that could have been sappy but surprisingly is moving. Even though it sounds like a demo, it should have been on the album.

  5. If I could choose 3.5, I would have.

First of all I have to say Ive listened to this cd many many times over the last 3 years. I enjoy and respect Jars venture into the more bluesy and earthy sound on this disc. They seem comfortable with it, and for the most part, they are successful with it. Two songs on this cd stand out as two of the best songs they ever wrote...Faith Enough and Jealous Kind. Both songs are moving, honest, and challenging. On Jealous Kind, Dan Haseltine proves that, despite the fact he doesnt have an earth shattering voice, he knows HOW to sing. It is a powerful song, but he doesnt oversing. He uses brilliant restraint in his delivery and lets loose at the end. The listener cant help but ache with him. A beatiful performance by him and the rest of the band.
My complaint with this cd is that there are 3 or 4 songs that just dont seem finished. "Show You Love" is one those songs. The chorus goes "I'm gonna show you love in every language" and thats basically all the song says, the idea is just repeated over and over in slightly different ways. There just needed to be more lyrically to flesh out the song, but as it is, its just very good sounding filler. Stellar performances by Matt, Charlie, Steve, Aaron, and the drummer (Ben I think)keep the song from being a complete throw away. Another song that needs a little work is "I'm In The Way". The idea seems to be that the singer knows someone who he realizes he needs to allow to fail in order for that person to learn and grow. But all the lyrics to the song are over in the first 65 seconds(with another minute or so of repetition) and that includes the first 15 seconds of music intro at the beginning. It just seems like they had a good idea for this song, but the idea wasnt completed; it just sounds rushed. "Sing" is another song that flirts a tad with being a bit fluffy, though not quite to the extent of the other two.
Some have complained a bit about "Jesus Blood Never Failed Me Yet". This sing is very repetitive (same 2 lines over and over) but on this song the repetition is intentional and for some reason it works. The instrumentation on this song is perfectly done and the 2 lines Dan sings become more and more infectious. It really gets under your skin and its hard not to be singing along by the end.
I really do thoroughly enjoy this cd, but I believe the points I made should cost it 2 stars. I have however gotten my moneys worth...and then some. Its 3 years since the release, and Jars certainly nailed it this time with "Good Monsters"...a true 5 star masterpiece.
