- I accidentally stumbled onto this CD through one of those CD clubs and I have been thankful for several years now. I thought I was buying an Enya or Clannad New Age type disc for the occasional listen. Instead, I lucked upon a stunning, almost operatic piece of music which combines progressive rock elements with new age and Celtic music and inspirational lyrics. I just can't say enough about this CD. Listen to it and it will move you spriritually. Great vocals, great music and good production on these recordings. I never grow tired of listening to this CD.
- I agree with the reviewer David Yeubanks who said that Iona's music is just heavenly! I got the album a few years ago when I was in my early twenties and Celtic music was very popular. I tried Enya at first but was disapointed by her slightly new age sounding lyrics. Even though I loved her voice, her music left me feeling a bit depressed. Iona's music is very uplifing and has the same quality Enya's music has. I think Iona is one of the best Christian bands. This album I think would even be appreciated by non Christian fans of Irish music. (Definitely a good gift idea for your non believing friends!)
- Inspired by the mystical reflections of ancient Irish saints, Journey into the Morn combines the best of Celtic, world beat, and rock influences. The instrumentation includes haunting vocals, acoustic and electric guitar, drums, percussion of many kinds, basses, violins, viola, tin whistles, low whistles, soprano sax, flute, and chimes.
The mysterious result is both soothing and energizing. Its tracks range from haunting to dreamlike, to pounding, but never grating. Many of the songs are long, and would never get air play, but they give ample time to explore themes and variations. I have enjoyed this album both as background music while working or entertaining, and during times of meditation. By far, my favorite track is "Encircling", a modern sonata in three parts. The music begins softly and builds to full force, with amazing electric guitar and drums layered over ancient themes and instrumentation. A portion of the lyrics (Lorica) are 4th century Irish, attributed to St. Patrick -- and by far the most beautiful English translation I have found of the Lorica. Other tracks are recorded in the original Gaelic. The CD lining gives both background information and the full lyrics used in the album. Reading these can be as inspiring as the music itself. As you read these notes, it becomes clear why they selected such timeless subject matter as the basis for their album. Iona's music is deeply rooted in the land and history. It literally inspired me to study centuries of Irish history, in order to learn the background for this great musical effort.
- Iona is simply put THE best contemporary Christian band out there, however, their music (as has been said) is not the typical top 40 variety of popular Christian music. Drawing its inspiration from the ancient Irish/Scottish Christian saints (St. Brendan; St. Patrick; St. Columba, etc.), the lyrics and the music are sublime and will appeal to anyone who likes great Celtic/folk/rock music, Christian or not. If you like Clannad you'll like this album. Buy this album immediately! Buy anything you can find by Iona!
- How did I ever buy this CD...I forgot because I have over 1800 CD's. I must have had magic fingers when I first laid my hands on this CD because this is one of my favorites. Becoming an Eastern Orthodox Christian a few years ago & studying my Irish/Scottish historic past, Iona reflects the more ancient mystical aspects of Celtic Christianity long lost in these days of Individualism & Rationalism. I look at Iona as a mix of the following: the progressive sound of "Yes", the craftsmanship of "Happy the Man", the jazz & soul of "Van Morrison", the Irish Scottish gigs of "Silly Wizard", the beautiful haunting female voice of...well, not as strange as "Lisa Gerrard", maybe more like "Enya".
More Detail:
The progressive rock group "Yes" was very talented changing time & rhythm at will with abstract flowery poetry, but they were rather messy or burly at their playing ability. The progressive rock group "Happy the Man" had less poetry but had a tighter cleaner approach to their progressive music. Iona takes the "Yes" poetry but uses ancient mystical Christian ideals with songs about the Irish, Scottish, & English saints in their classic praises to God, life, & nature. Iona is as tight & clean in their musical phasing as "Happy the Man".
"Van Morrison" is highly known for his intermix of Jazz & Rock while still containing his Irish Celtic soul. At times Iona will break off into a Jazz mode while containing a Celtic Soul.
"Silly Wizard" is one of the best Irish Scottish folk bands playing at lighting speed. Iona is just as fast when they play a Irish Scottish jig yet at times convert that style into modern jazz rock.
Iona's main singer is Joanne Hogg. Her singing voice is not a dark as Lisa Gerrard, nor as light & airy as Enya, but all 3 women do contain a mystical soprano chant that causes goose bumps.
Believe it or not Robert Fripp of King Crimson is a guest on several tracks with his Fripp-Tronics guitar work.
Reading many Fr. Seraphim Rose books & his love of Lindisfarne island, the song on this CD about Lindisfarne calls me back to my ancestral homeland. A must for any progressive music lover or Christian Mystic.

- These songs are not dated! How can you date a classic? The whole album flows and all the songs are righteous and can stand on their own. His truth still marches on and it is good to know that somebody somewhere is praying just for you! This album spoke to me in college and still speaks to me in 2007. I highly recommend it and for all you vocalists, this album is a must. Let a pro show you how it is done. Thanks Andrae and May God Bless all who were and still are touched by your music today!
- I am trying to find this cd all over and having no luck, does anyone no where I can buy this, looking for the lyrics to track 7
livin this kind of life
- This album brings back a lot of good memories for me. My parents owned the casette back in the 1980s when it first came out and even at a young age I enjoyed AndraƩ's music very much. I bought this album from Amazon while in college in 1999 and it still finds its way into my CD player.
The music does sound dated, but I think that adds to the fun of it. The songs are powerful, soulful, and very enjoyable.
- The songs on this album brought me to the Lord 10 years ago and it is still my favorite . May God continue to use and bless you Andre!

- I saw these guys when they were touring with Sandi Patty and immediately found them to be entertaining and wonderfully talented! The songs are great and their voices have a beautiful harmony.
- I saw this group of 3 guys perform at a Sandi Patti concert about 14 years ago in San Diego and loved them so much I bought the cassette. I have worn it down from so much use. The voices of these 3 guys blend beautifully as they sing in praise and worship to God. My two favorite songs are "Pray On" and "I'm Goin' Home" (which I've requested to be played at my funeral some day). I've shared this cassette with many friends. I love it and highly recommend it!
- Dare to Believe will have you clapping your hands and praising God. This wonderful CD brings glory to God through music...just as He intended it. Highly recommended!!

5 comments about Petra Praise 2: We Need Jesus.
- Somewhere around the turn of the new Millennium, practically every Christian artist was making a worship album. A revival was in place in the Christian faith and contemporary musicians clamored to be part of the revival; but virtually all of the artists brought out pale comparisons of this amazing album that predates the aforementioned movement by three years. When the second song, the oft-covered "Lord I Lift Your Name On High" kicks into gear, you know you're listening to a very special band. John Schlitt is arguably, the best rock singer around, whether you're talking Christian OR Secular music. The rest of the band, led by the pioneering Bob Hartman, is equally terrific. Ultimately, though, the TLC that the band gives to each song is remarkable, song after song. "I Love You Lord" and "Show Your Power" are treated as the lush love songs to the Lord that they are; while "The Holiest Name" and "Ancient of Days" are rocking anthems of praise. And Petra leaves the best to the end, with the stunningly beautiful "Lovely Lord" and the tremendous praise song "We Need Jesus" (which features Lou Gramm of Foreigner) taking your breath away. When it comes to praise and worship, execution is everything; and not before "Praise 2" - or since it - has there been a better executed contemporary album in this genre.
- Petra Praise 2: We Need Jesus is the band's second album devoted entirely to songs of praise and worship. With longtime Petra producers John and Dino Elefante at the helm, Petra Praise 2 is an excellent collection of praise and worship songs. My overall favorite song on this CD is The Holiest Name, as I really love the vocal harmonies. Some other songs I really enjoyed include Be of Good Cheer, Ancient of Days, Lord, I Lift Your Name on High, Lovely Lord and the title track. The CD closes with We Need Jesus, in which John Elefante (former Kansas vocalist) and Lou Gramm (ex-Foreigner vocalist) join Petra frontman John Schlitt (formerly of Head East) on lead vocals. If you're looking to rock out to standard Petra fare, you're likely to be disappointed, but if you are looking for a great contemporary praise & worship CD, give Petra Praise 2: We Need Jesus a try. This is a great worship album!
- I was introduced to petra by this album. Now i got almost all of their albums. The band is a spiritual rock band. This album is a bit different, more gospel like, but it has a special soul, if i can say that. All the songs are true, no plastic. I have to hear any other singer who has such voice as the singer on this album, it is so captivating. The whole album is well composed, it has a dinamic curve, i cant say a bad word, really. To whom i recommend this album? Who admire musicality above all else, wants to sit back and enjoy, and simply want to cheer up his day.
- I'm not the world's best Christian. I really don't even attend church normally, but I feel so at peace with this cd. I'm a rocker myself. I love rock, hard rock, classic rock, etc. I never thought I'd pick up a Christian cd. My parents got this and I heard them listening to it one day, and it just did something to me. The harmonies are great. There's a great blend of slow songs and upbeat songs. This cd is on my top 5 list, which is saying a lot b/c I'm a music guru. It's my life. Get this cd, and you will just feel so much better; so at peace. I urge everyone to own this cd.
- As a Christian Universalist(who's a Restorationist in my views on the regeneration of all things), this album, to me, just continues to cry to both the Church and to the world of our totally victorious Christ Who will never give up on any of us, no matter what God has to do for us, with us, or to us --any of us can invite God's wrath, but none of us can dismiss His love! To me, from where I'm coming from as a Restorationist, that's what this album totally screams out to me, especially in the first song, "Song of Moses" which is adapted from the book of Revelation where the song of Moses is also called the Song of the Lamb. Songs on this CD like "Be of Good Cheer" and "Ancient of Days" just keep the spiritual tide rising and rising into the Presence of God. There are few songs --and fewer albums still-- that I can look to and say that that's truly Anointed of the Holy Spirit, but this album is one of those rare gems; one of those rare spiritual breakthrough albums that's probably going to be on the lips of multitudes for years to come. This album is definitely NOT "Calvinist material 101". This CD screams of irresistible grace for all of creation through the atonement of Jesus Christ that knows no limits of time or place; life or death --this whole album seems to breathe of the totally victorious spirit of the Book of Revelation, that none can ever escape His love, chastening and rebuke, and quickening to newness of life. What Andrew Jukes's book from 1867 "Restitution of all things"(available from Concordant Publishing Concern online) is to Universalism, this CD is to contemporary Christian music. I kid you not and hope that you get half as much out of listening to it for hours and hours as I have. You have got to get this CD --I'm telling ya!

- R Swift spits for those of you who desire discipleship or Christ period. Skill wise, he is in the mold of the greats (Lecrae, Trip Lee, Flame). Seriously I would put this album up against any secular product. Cross Movement does it again. Sound quality is tight, beats are east coast gritty and the lyrics ohh the lyrics are perfection. THANK YOU JESUS!
- Easily the CD I listen to most often. If it were only a metter of music, I would strongly encourage everyone to purchase this CD. Since it's more importantly a matter of life & death, listen to your friend's copy if you can't afford it. On a musical level, this CD is very enjoyable with a lot of live band sounding boom-bap type beats. It's definitely Philly sound - jazzy but rough. This album is not a matter of favorites - I like every song. The relevance of every song to everyday life is amazing and the skill with which each rhyme is delivered should pique the ears (and hopefully hearts) of anyone that says they love hip-hop. Which brings me to the main point about this album, it's all about preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ to the human experience. This album gives voice to the living hope that Christians have (in Jesus Christ alone) over the very real issues that all of God's people come from. He didn't call the righteous but the sinners to repent. Get this album.
- This CD is proof that flow for Christ is annointed, while secular rhymes have deteriorated (b/c they are not of God). This CD is done the way I like it - allowing the beats to augment the rhymes. After all, the message of Christ should be the primary focus. What I love most about this album is that it lacks the self boasting that underlies most hip hop (including some gospel hip hop). There is even a track that addresses this issue. If you are a fan of hip hop, a fan of lyricism, & are in search of something you can put on blast WITH NO GUILT, buy this album now! Also, do yourself a favor and check out other Cross Movement artists (Da TRUTH, Ambassador, Phanatik etc). You will not be disappointed.
