  1. I LOVE classic Disney films and movies, and when I bought this CD with some birthday money, I was not making a mistake. If you want an affordable CD with a good amount of songs that you are probably familiar with (if you watch Disney films), this is a good buy. Soon after I bought this one, I added the 2nd volume to my collection, and finally the 3rd. Obviously they don't have all the Disney songs, but these CD's put together have just about every song to make every person in the family happy. There are songs that even my dad and mom like to listen to in the car on trips. This is worth your money!

  2. This cd is great! It has a great variety of classic Disney music! Highly reccomended.

  3. Disney's Greatest, Volume 1 is the first installment in a fine CD series of classic Disney music and show tunes. The quality of the sound is excellent and the artwork is very nicely done as well.

Phil Collins starts off the track set with a great tune from Tarzan entitled "Strangers Like Me." "Strangers Like Me" is a very good number and Phil Collins does this very well. The musical arrangement is also very lush--what a fine opening number! Susan Egan and Cheryl Freeman do a duet on "I Won't Say (I'm In Love)" from the Disney movie Hercules; they sing this to perfection and they harmonize very well on the chorus. The keyboard works well for the arrangement and "I Won't Say (I'm In Love)" is a major highlight of this album.

Randy Newman sings one of my very favorite tunes on this album, "You've Got A Friend In Me" from the Disney/Pixar film called Toy Story; Randy sings wonderfully and his excellent sense of timing makes his performance stronger still. In addition, "The Circle Of Life" from the soundtrack of The Lion King is brilliantly performed by Carmen Twillie; this is another of my very favorite Disney tunes from recent years and I could never tire of hearing this fantastic hit! Listen also for the great Angela Lansbury to perform "Beauty And The Beast" with panache; Angela sings very well and her voice is as clear as a bell. Great!

There's also another favorite of mine, "I Wan'na Be Like You (The Monkey Song)" from The Jungle Book Disney film; this is performed by Louis Prima with Phil Harris and Bruce Reitherman. This song swings brightly and I always liked "I Wan'na Be Like You." The woodwind instruments make the music very good and the percussion marks the beat as well. "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo (The Magic Song)" from Cinderella features a fine performance by Verna Felton; Verna sings this beautifully and it's a timeless Disney classic. James Baskett also makes good on a wonderful rendition of "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah;" this is yet another one of my very favorite Disney tunes.

The CD ends strong with Cliff Edwards performing "When You Wish Upon A Star" from Pinocchio. Cliff sings this with great sensitivity and this is very impressive. I love it!

Overall, this is a very strong CD installment in this CD series of Disney classic tunes. Diehard fans will want the other CDs in this set and they may also want to consider the box set of these CDs as well.

  4. I absolutely love this cd. I bought it for my 9 month old daughter to listen to while we are driving in the car. It helps keep her from getting upset about being in her car seat, plus she will know all the songs before she even sees the movies. Would definitely recommend this. I can't wait to get the other volumes.

  5. My 4-year old daughter loves to listen to music in the car. She's a big disney fan and loves most all of the songs on here. There's a great mix from all her favorite movies.

5 comments about Disney's Greatest Vol. 2.

  1. This is a great CD. I love it, my kids love it, and it worked perfect for our road trip. It is something we can all enjoy and listen to. We have collected all of the volumes. They are great.

  2. We recently purchased this cd, after already having Vol. 1. My kids (3 and 1 1/2) love both cds. It can be a real help in the car on extended trips.

  3. Nothing brings sweet recollection of Disney movies like hearing the wonderful songs. In an age where there so much music with no redeeming qualities, these Disney CDs are priceless. Wonderful for the entire family to listen to around the house or in the car while traveling. We can't help but sing along. We love that these are the original tracks from the movies! Wonderful! We now have all three volumes.

  4. I bought this album for my son, and I think we've just about worn it out. I really enjoy the fact that now he can sing along to many of the Disney songs I grew up with, and that we can both enjoy songs from some of the newer Disney movies. This is a must have for anyone who has kids. They have taken the best songs from the past and present Disney movies and put in on one CD. Vol. 1 is also a great buy.

  5. Disney is one of the few motion picture companies out there who are lucky enough to have such a large selection of tunes to cull "hits" from. This second "Greatest" album seems to be lacking when compared to the original, but it gives the listener a few tunes from films not on the first album and a few others that should have been on the first one anyway. Examples of this are the timeless and wonderful "You'll Be In My Heart" from "Tarzan," "Be Our Guest" from "Beauty and the Beast," and "Go The Distance" from "Hercules." The songs are listed in a descending order of newest to oldest. Great classics on here include "Someday My Prince Will Come," "Ballad of Davy Crockett," and "It's A Small World." Other wonderful tunes on here include the unforgettable "Under The Sea" and "A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes."

This album is a worthy second collection of Disney's "Greatest." It features an excellent mixture of tunes from modern Disney flicks as well as beloved classics. Although younger children may not know of tunes like "Second Star To The Right," just a few listens will have them singing or humming along with all of the songs on this disc.

I should note that I am a huge Disney freak and my review is most probably biased. I highly recommend this album along with the first. I haven't purchased the third installment in this series, but it does seem to be a bit of a drop off from these first two albums. I hope that you enjoy this album with your family as much as I do with mine!

5 comments about Aladdin: Special Edition Soundtrack.

  1. Captures the essence of the film and allows my daughters to enjoy the music they know so well without sitting in front of a TV.

  2. I was hoping that the Aladdin soundtrack would be re-released for the Platinum edition DVD and now it sounds better than ever with its all new enhanced music. You also get the extra tracks that were never released with the original CD. If you're a fan of the music and songs from Aladdin, then I definitely recommend this re-release.

  3. I concur with all the other reviews. These are some Menkein's best songs, and Ashman's lyrics are superior. The bonus tracks are wonderful, although I question the newer version of "A whole new world."

My beef with this and many other soundtracks is the rearrangement of the material from movie order. I'm sure for cassettes it was handier to have songs on one side and background music on the other. But in CD format, it means you emotionally go through the story twice. Come one, why not give us the material in show order. Not all CD players can be programmed so that isn't the right answer. The same holds true for Lion King (movie). Is it SOOoo hard to put the songs and background in the film order?

  4. in 1992, walt disney pictures continued their hold on the world of animated entertainment with aladdin. that year, aladdin snagged 217 million dollars and was the highest grossing film of the year; it also won two academy awards for best score and best original song. however, compared to other works by the same composer and lyricists?

First up is the academy award winning score by alan menken. the score shows brilliantly what menken's greatest strength is. he can incorperate elements of both the story and the setting to make a great score that fits perfectly in the film. his use of middle-eastern sounds, rhythms and instruments is great and brings an intensity that can only be provided by the setting. his score also shows his ability to stay fresh with each project and he rarely duplicates himself and his earlier works; that said, aladdin is the worst score for duplicating earlier themes, but its never enough of a problem to truely seem that flawed.

    SCORE 5 out of 5

during this production, howard ashman (menken's lyricist for little shop of horrors, the little mermaid and beauty and the beast) died. several of his works remain but tim rice was brought on to finish the remaining songs. ashman was an amazing force in musical entertainment and his death was a true tragedy, but how does rice do filling in? the truth is not all that bad. the following is a breakdown of all the songs from the picture.

ARABIAN NIGHTS -(ashman) this is one of the strongest songs of the entire piece performed by bruce adler. the intensity of the vocals and use of local rhythms and sounds provides a great opening that clearly shows how "we're not in kansas anymore"
    5 out of 5

ONE JUMP AHEAD -(rice) this is the real opening where we first meet aladdin (sung by brad kane) and the guards chasing him. this is a fun broadway-esque number but falls somewhat short of other disney openers, notably beauty and the beast. however this is definately another strong song from this great soundtrack
    5 out of 5

ONE JUMP AHEAD (REPRISE) -(rice) this is a softer, slower reprise that is beautiful and touching. maybe a longer or similar version would've fleshed out the entire piece better and given more depth and emotion.
    5 out of 5

FRIEND LIKE ME -(ashman) as strong as this song is, the only problem is that by here, the whole jazzy feel doesnt quite work as well. this is a strong song (it is the second academy award nominated song) but by here, the whole over-the-top and larger-than-life feel is getting a little old.
    4 out of 5

PRINCE ALI -(ashman) another strong song that works mildly better than the above due to the fullness of the orchestrations, but again is feeling a little bit too large but still fun and again broadway-esque
    4 out of 5

A WHOLE NEW WORLD -(rice) here it is, 1992's winner for best original song and well deserving too. finally we find a song that is moving and emotional. this is the strongest song out out of the film easily; it is powerful and establishes aladdin and jasmine's love for one another. brad kane and lea solanga's vocals are both truly beautiful and moving as well
    5 out of 5

PRINCE ALI (REPRISE) -(rice) this is a deveously fun little track sung by jafar that definately could've been a little bit more fun if it was a little longer, but still fun in a darker way.
    4 out of 5

SONGS OVERALL 4 out of 5

the biggest problem overall is probably in the material. it didn't offer any real moments for a soft moving ballad (a whole new world aside). ashman's death definately weighs heavily on this album since one sits and wonders what he could have done, but really even his contributions show just how fun a piece this is intended to be, it's not supposed to be as powerful as other disney works. aladdin definately succeeds here, but in the grander scale of things, this is disney's weakest contribution to the disney rennisaince.

  5. It's surprising, very suprising. The score is excellent, it's suprisingly strong for this genre. The songs, although not brilliant in composition, at least have catchy lyrics and an infectious melody. Alan Menken is a Disney guy, and you'll hear reminices of 'Beauty and the Beast' and 'The Little Mermaid' throughout the CD. I haven't actually listened to the 'Special Edition' of the Aladdin soundtrack, so I can't rate the extra songs and features, but I trust the original score and songs have remained unchanged. In closing--don't judge a CD by its cover. Come to think of it, don't judge this movie by its cover. If you actually take the time to stop and look past the goofy stuff 'Aladdin' is a beautiful--and entertaining--movie. If this movie wasn't animated (marvellously animated, I might add) this score would probably be considered the ultimate paragon of 'Arabian Nights.'

  1. I lost mine so I'm glad to be able to find it. I play it for me and my son. Thank you

  2. This soundtrack never grows old - I have it playing right now on repeat. This is a case where the sequel is just as good as the original - and the music is also! The fantastic songs "He Lives in You" and "One of Us" are on my top 20 songs list.
What a value - $6.25 for a magical piece of disney. How can anyone resist?
    Don't!

  3. This sound track had a the typical lion king feel to it. Though I am not a big fan of the end title or Upendi. Everything I like.

  4. This CD is the soundtrack of one of the best Disney Sequels to date. Fans of the movie will love to listen to the familiar songs repeatedly. The songs on this cd are entertaining and heartwarming and set to beautiful music.

  5. I think all the songs in this soundtrack are worth listening to, but this soundtrack is not so good as "Return to Pride Rock". Because many good songs were not in this soundtrack, such as "Song For the Children" "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" and "I Want to See the Moon". Well, I don't like this soundtrack, but I appreciate the cover of this soundtrack was cute. So I rate it 4 stars! ^_^

5 comments about The Dreamers.

  1. I liked this one a lot. It takes the time to explore the group's sound and isn't as scattershot as were The Gift, Taboo & Exile, or Music For Children. The band gets an absolutely wicked groove going on "Exodus." Certainly fans of Zorn's more outrageous material might find this a bit tame, but it's also a sort of all-killer, no filler Zorn - a good point of entry. Marc Ribot and Joey Baron are outstanding on this album.

  2. I found my way to John Zorn's thrash-jazz band Naked City via the music library at Miskatonic University here in Arkham. They had one of the Filmworks albums there and I had a listen. It sounded cool so I took a look at our local music store and found the first Naked City album, my first Zorn album. I found it incomprehensibly good, and I thought for sure that all the quick changes and jump-cuts were done on a mixer and not performed live (Youtube has now proved me wrong on that.) Then I looked in the credits for my favorite album from high school, the elaborately produced first album by Mr. Bungle, and my fate was sealed when I saw that Zorn had produced it.

Since then I have grown disenchanted. The Naked City first album was the only Zorn work that I knew until the box set for that band came out. I bought it, and that box set is arguably the finest avant-garde musical recording ever made.

But I am sad to say that everything I have ever heard from Zorn that was not Naked City was garbage that I never would have bought or listened had it not been recorded by Zorn et al. He has his own record label now, Tzadik, who are mainly distinguished by the purple prose they insert into their CD packages, which is such over-the-top praise that you would think Tzadik was the greatest label in the universe.

But they're not. Even when Zorn composes exotica like this album, the Dreamers, or on Music for Children II: The Gift, it is repetitive, simplistic and boring. My solution for all the Zorn albums I had accumulated since college, except for the Naked City box set, was to dump them in a parking lot so that no one else would get ripped off if I sold them to a used music store.

Don't let Zorn fool you. His music is mediocre crap now. The Dreamers would never have been distributed or critically praised if it didn't have the Zorn name and record label on it. Because it sucks, and there is much better music of this type out there.

  3. John Zorn's "The Dreamers" is a delightfully lyrical and poetic journey through instrumental fairy tales from the Electric Masada all-stars. Album opener "Mow Mow" sets the tone for a marvellous dream-like tour into a mesmeric world of exotica music. Listen for Jamie Saft's piano via "A Ride On Cottonfair", John Zorn's alto-sax on "Toys", both Marc Ribot's guitar and Kenny Wollesen's vibes on "Of Wonder And Certainty". "The Dreamers" is a varied and vibrant release perfect for fans who fell in love with John Zorn's "The Gift". Tzadik's incredible artwork for this album also features a sheet of sixteen collectable character stickers in a stunning CD package.

  4. what's more I do not plan on hating it from what I've heard from it already. Hence the 5 stars rating. Really nothing intellectual to add like other big shot Zorn reviewers other than I am not Jewish and I think MOST of his albums are untouchable by anyone. I couldn't care less if this has any disturbing artwork in it like the Gift, although that WAS a pretty neat surprise. Would be just as cool if this turns out to be the Gift Vol. 2. Thanks Zorn, I hate most music but yours I do not.

  5. I hate to say it, but lately it seems that John Zorn's been going off the rails a little bit. It no doubt started when 1996's Bar Kokhba (chamber reworkings of the Masada songbook) became Tzadik's best seller. It was indeed a fantastic album, but what followed was album after album with a similar flavour - the last dozen or so Filmworks, The Circle Maker, the Masada anniversary series, etc. And of course 2001's The Gift - similar in lineup to the Masada chamber ensembles but a different vibe, more surf, latin, lounge and exotica.

The Dreamers follows in a similar vein, though without that hint of 'darkness' that The Gift had. To be honest I'm a bit torn about this album. On one hand it sounds great, as all Zorn's albums do. And it's hard to fault any of the performances. But the compositions are just so repetitive and one-dimensional, there's really nothing to 'explore' like in most of Zorn's output.

It kind of feels like everything's on autopilot, and it lacks the meticulous arrangements of the past. "Anulikwutsayl" could have been a highly atmospheric ambient piece but it gets disrupted by basically everyone in the band banging on things at inappropriate moments. There is a beautiful mood created on "Forbidden Tears", but Jamie Saft really fumbles through his Rhodes solo (and one also wonders if he maybe should have taken his keyboard in for a checkup before the session, there are some really out notes there!).

Zorn features on one track, the playful "Toys". It's a fun tune, but the solos are ridiculously noisy and random, and ultimately this piece probably doesn't fit on what is otherwise a very laid back album (though I am aware that despite this being a quite 'easy listening' album, Zorn is still Zorn and never likes to settle into a pattern for too long).

So all in all it's not an absolutely terrible album, but Zorn can do so much better. 2 and a half stars...

  1. Quite simply one of the Greatest Animated Films Ever! This new 'expanded' version of the previously released soundtrack has some great new tracks including 'Unicron's Theme'- I've ALWAYS wanted this! A recommended buy for fans of the Robots in Disguise.

  2. Transformers The Movie (1986) is one of my all-time favorite movies and I wasted little time securing a copy of the soundtrack on LP shortly after the movie was released back in 1986-1987. As the movie remained unavailable for purchase or even rental for several years, listening to the soundtrack was pretty much my only reminder of/link to the movie I loved and it was one of my most treasured albums even though regular lack of access to a record player somewhat diminished the frequency that I listened to it. However, one of my best friends surprised me by getting me a copy of the CD reissue of the soundtrack a few years later for one of my birthdays and it quickly found a place in my collection as one of my most frequently listened to soundtracks. The original release, which contained all of the vocal tracks and some of the instrumental tracks composed by Vince DiCola (Rocky IV) from the movie, was always enjoyable to listen to but the soundtrack nevertheless seemed somewhat limited when considering the size and scope of the magnificent instrumental score that Mr. DiCola composed for the movie (especially after having an opportunity to watch the movie again) but, given that it was the only commercially available version of the soundtrack available until last year I accepted its limitations and managed to enjoy it as it was. I was very pleased to accidentally discover via iTunes last year that the soundtrack had been re-released containing some additional instrumental tracks from Mr. DiCola's score. Unfortunately, the instrumental tracks included on the re-release were still not as comprehensive as I had hoped for but it did fill in some of the gaps left by the previous release and the soundtrack now includes nearly all of the instrumental music featured during the first 30 minutes of the movie including a collection of music featured during scenes featuring Unicron ("Unicron Medley"), the post-credits Autobot moon base/shuttle launch sequence ("Moon Base Shuttle Launch"), and the second half of the Autobot City Battle containing the conclusion of Prime's battle with Megatron and the Decepticon's subsequent retreat ("Megatron Must Be Stopped Parts 1 & 2"). As an added bonus, the re-release also has an alternate version of the Transformers theme composed by Vince DiCola with vocals performed by Stan Bush, who had previously contributed the soundtrack's standout tracks, "The Touch" and "Dare". Despite its limitations, I continue to frequently listen to it and it is probably one of my most-played albums with the possible exception of John William's collection of music composed for the "Star Wars" movies. My only hope is that we will eventually get a commercially available release of Vince DiCola's entire instrumental score for the movie. My understanding is that full-length recordings of the score were actually released (albeit in limited quantities) at the 1997 & 2001 Bot-Con conventions but they have since become discontinued/out-of-print. Based on personal correspondence with Mr. DiCola, it appears that even he himself is unsure of the prospects of a future commercial release of his entire instrumental score for the movie. In the meantime, however, I am continuing to enjoy what I consider to be an amazing soundtrack to an amazing movie! The 2007 release is highly recommended to fans of the movie and the G1 Transformers series in general.

  3. I bought the cassette years ago. I wore the casette out from playing it again and again. It's a great soundtrack, particularly good for running to.

  4. I grabbed this after I got a copy of the 20th anniversary edition dvd. I had the original soundtrack on tape and I figured it was time for an upgrade. I am very glad with my decision. Fans of the original movie and soundtrack will be pleasantly surprised with this new edition. It comes complete with a remastering of all 10 original tracks PLUS 4 bonus tracks. Three of which are more scores from Mr. Vince Dicola, including the Unicron theme. If you're looking for a trip down nostalgic lane, check this out.

  5. For anyone who loved the uber cheesey 80s rock feel of the good movie, this is the soundtrack for you. This one has 4 additional tracks including a remix of the Transformers theme. I can still see all of the scenes play out in my head when I hear the music.

  1. This CD is a wonderful collection of some 25(!) of the most beloved Disney hits. Indeed, the songs on this CD are all songs from the great Disney movies that you remember from your childhood. There's "Someday My Prince Will Come" from Snow White, "Colonel Hathi's March" from the Jungle Book, and "Chim Chim Cher-ee" from Mary Poppins. What's also wonderful is that the hits are from the great Disney movies right up to the present, with such songs as "Beauty and the Beast" from the movie of the same title.

My whole family loves these songs, and often sings along with them. As a wonderful bonus, we were not aware of "Minnie's Yoo Hoo!" which sounds like a 1920s, snappy little tune, and my children often play it twice and even three times in a row.

Buy this CD you won't regret it!

  2. I purchased this to keep my kids occupied on vacation, and it performed beautifully! I can recommend it fully.

  3. I have all 5 CD's and it is an awesome collection! All of my favorite songs are on the 5 CD's and every Disney fan like I am should have this collection!

  4. There isn't one single song from the 1977 classic "The Rescuers" included in this collection, I don't see why Disney chose not to include any of those songs which are all gorgeous, when they did include unmemorable and weak songs instead, I've seen these CD's with songs that aren't half as good as "Tomorrow is Another Day," "The Journey," "Someone's Waiting for You" or "Rescue Aid Society."

Very disappointing, The Rescuers is a fine Disney classic and it should be included with all of the others.

  5. The idea of issuing musical selections from Disney films, features and other areas of their world of entertainment is really quite pleasing. If you love the world that Walt Disney created and has continued on to this day, this CD gives you little musical vignettes across that span of time that are very nostalgic and uplifting. I really love Track 13: THE MONKEY'S UNCLE sung by Annette Funicello and The Beach Boys. Track 4: "Under the Sea" from THE LITTLE MERMAID is just wonderful. This is a great CD.

  1. We bought this CD to practice my daughter's dance recital number to the "MICKY MOUSE CLUB MARCH"...however after listening to the whole thing over and over and over we are totally in love with classics like "THe Bear Neccessities" and "Supercalifragilistic (SP?)....we love the songs from all our favorite Disney movies, and this CD showcases a lot of them! :) A total bargain for variety music that is appropriate for children and families alike.

  2. I purchased this to keep my kids occupied on vacation, and it performed beautifully! I can recommend it fully.

  3. I have the classic disney volume 2 audio cassette which is very rare this is a great collection of music. It has a lot of very old peices in it. Disney Did a great job at cleaning them up. It even has a peice from song of the south which most people dont even know what that movie is. I would say yes to by this item on cd or cassette. I give it five stars. Their was only one or two songs i disliked.

  4. My kids and I love to pop this into the CD player when we are on road trips together. We sing along and have a great time.

  5. I have a 16 month old granddaughter and she is not that excited about this CD. I think it would be great for an older child, there are less familiar songs and certainly not as catchy tunes on this CD. I really bought it because it had the Mickey Mouse Club March on it and I sing that to her all the time. She does enjoy that song!

  1. I got these for my son, but to be honest I love Spongebob just as much as he does if not more. We listened to the whole cd and it was great hearing all the great songs from alot of the episodes. I love the whole thing, a wonderful collection of listening pleasure!!!!!

  2. I bought this album for "Sweet Victory" but it is only HALF the song! Why not put the entire song if you are going to create an album?!! Doesn't make sense to me.

  3. I bought a couple of Spongebob albums for Christmas this year. This was the right one. The best day ever sucked, it was random new music that was created to be supplemental to the show, but not directly related to any existing episodes. Had I known this I wouldn't have bought it. My kids still like it, but the Yellow Album is all the great songs that I love FROM THE EPISODES! Nice. All I have to say is the best time to wear a stripped sweater.....is....the best time to listen to this CD, man.

  4. I bought this for my two children who are huge fans of the show and they absolutely love it. I even enjoy listening to the cleverly written songs that bring back memorites of my favorite episodes. You really get a lot for your money on this one, there are quite a few songs.

  5. There are a few great songs here for fans of the show, but think twice before you pay $14 for what is essentially a half hour of TV soundbytes. Most of the tracks are a minute or less in length. If you want specific tracks for a mix CD or playlist, then buy them from iTunes. If you just want Spongebob-themed noise to entertain your kids, then let them watch the show instead.
