2 comments about Crazy Eyes.

  1. This singer's shrill voice and overdramatic renditions of such wonderful songs hardly seems fitting for a combo as talented as Bill Mays, Frank Vignola, Jon Burr and Joe Ascione. Conklin's voice is like a wet blanket on the instrumental performances and arrangements. I simply cannot understand how any organization would ever name her Jazz Vocalist of the year. If cabaret is your thing you might really love Mary Foster Conklin, but if you are looking for soulful female jazz artists pick up Dinah Washington, Nancy King, Billy Holiday or Nancy Wilson. Conklin is about as soulful as Dorris Day.

  2. Backed by one of the best rhythm sections in the biz - Bill Mays on piano, Jon Burr on bass and Terry Clarke on drums - Mary Foster Conklin offers an astute array of music guaranteed to please fans of jazz vocals.

From Jeffrey Klitz's inventive arrangements of the Rodgers and Hammerstein standard, The Gentleman Is A Dope, and the Johnny Mercer-Matt Melneck hit, Goody Goody, to four new tunes by one of the most talented new composer on the block, David Cantor, she brings a sassy style to the music. Note the title tune: Crazy Eyes.

Pay special attention to Fried Bananas, a bebop tune by sax legend Dexter Gordon with lyrics by Anne Phillips. She nimbly nails this tricky, never recorded "vocalese" tune like a master. Also note the Willie Dixon blues tune, Dead Presidents.

    Remember this singer's name!

  1. At last, Mimi Hines' two vocal albums from the mid-1960s are available on CD. After listening to this, you'll wonder why there were only two albums. "The Music That Makes Me Dance," which she sang in "Funny Girl" after she replaced Barbra Streisand, is a standout, as well as "Nothing Can Stop Me Now" and "Till There Was You. And "Pink Taffeta Sample Size 10," a song cut from "Sweet Charity" is touching and a standout performance. Thank you to whoever made these albums available again.

2 comments about You're Sensational: Cole Porter In The '20s, '40s, And '50s.

  1. This beautifully presented boxed set has a big, well illustrated book on heavy stock, with meticulous and well researched notes about both Porter and those who interpreted his music and lyrics. The book shows not just chronology of Porter's output, but also has thumbnail biographies of those artists appearing on the CDs.

Having said that, any Cole Porter anthology should be more about the music than anything else, and for the Porter lover there is a host of recordings of his famous (and some not so famous) songs. Reproductions are excellent, especially of a couple of the older versions, and some of the songs are live recordings from the Broadway shows they first appeared in.

For the purist, a few of the songs are done in a couple of versions by different artists, so that you might hear a 'straight' version and a 'jazz' version of the same song. Good value.

  1. Holy cow... I was just looking for new cds and found someone's recommendation for this one. I didn't buy it, but just heard the samples. I actually winced and had to turn it off, she was so flat. Her intonation is absolutely awful! (Meaning, she's really out of tune). I am a singer with a really good ear, and honestly, I can't listen to it... I feel bad saying that, but it's the truth.

  2. KT, who comes from a large musical family, possesses a wonderful soprano voice that has enabled her to become one of America's finest cabaret singers. Originally from Oklahoma, KT is now based in New York.

On this album, KT focuses on the music of Richard Rodgers, who composed many classic songs, either with Oscar Hammerstein or Lorenz Hart. KT has avoided most of the really famous songs, choosing instead to revive less obvious songs. So you won't find You'll never walk alone, Some enchanted evening or It might as well be spring among the songs here, but you will find plenty of outstanding songs, all of which KT sings beautifully.

Perhaps the best know of the songs here is The gentleman is a dope, from the Broadway musical Allegro - the song was a top twenty American hit for Jo Stafford in 1947 but has been recorded by my fine singers since then. In contrast, there are some almost-forgotten songs like When you're dancing a waltz, which KT has paired in a waltz medley wit another rarely recorded song, Do I hear a waltz.

If you enjoy quality cabaret music, especially if you like the songs of Rodgers, Hart and Hammerstein, give KT a listen.

1 comments about Classic German Movie Songs: The UFA Years.

  1. What a great find this CD is. It took 60+ years for the UFA music to be put on disc. The songs are terrific and evoke the mood of those years . You can just imagine the audiences in the cinema's being transported to a make believe world so different from the stark reality of their daily existance.
The songs selection is great ,as well as the quality of the sound.I must congratulate the producers on giving us so many songs for our money.Truly a rare find and well worth the price paid . I highly recommend the UFA soundtracks. You definatley will not be disappointed.
