  1. I already have this audio cassette and plan to purchase the CD version for my kindergarten classroom. However, it would also be a great CD for children to listen to in the car. It has lots of fun songs, that are full of energy and are sure to lift your child(ren)'s spirits. I am a teacher but I am also a mother and have often found that having my child (age 3) listen to his favorite music in the car takes away the "grumpies" that sometime occur when we're in the car on the way to his school. Whenever we listen to the songs on this album, both my son and I join in and sing along. Our favorite song in the morning on the way to school starts like this "1-2-3-4-5 Once I caught a fish alive..." I would definitely recommend this CD.

  1. The price of this CD is low, but the content is good. In this CD, you will listen some familiar songs and have fun. My son who is 4 years old enjoys listening to this CD almost everyday. Lyrics card is included and front and back picture is lovely, well known Snoopy and his friends. I also have CDs of disney and sesame, of cource they are good, but you can get snoopy at lower cost. Why don't you try this one?

  1. My wife, I ,and our grandchildren, like this Cd so well, it must be replaced. This Cd finally gives us some fun, and variety over those boring old traditional tunes.

  2. I bought this in cassette form 4 years ago, and my daughter loved it! I am purchasing the CD for my son now! It may not be traditional, but it appeals to kids! I didn't like it at first, but my daughter did, and it grew on me!

  3. The samples turned me off. I wanted very much to be pleased, but I wasn't. A much more traditional arrangement of the various rhymes would I believe sell in huge quantities!

4 comments about Jack Lemmon Tells the Tale of Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf.

  1. I think this is a great learning CD for kids and it's great for adults too! And who can resist Jack Lemmon?!

  2. My two year old son loves to listen to this CD and asks for it over and over again. The music and the story told by Jack Lemon keep his attention.

  3. I begin my review by saying that the Prague Festival Orchestra and Jack Lemmon did an excellent job recording Peter and the Wolf. However, The Toy Symphony left a lot to be desired. I could not listen to it because it was so terribly recorded. The recording had too much treble and I could not adjust my stereo equipment to compensate.

I suggest you purchase the David Bowie narration of Peter and the Wolf. It was quality recording all the way through.

  2. I love this album.

If it had all the songs the old vinyl did, it would be the best Christmas album in the world.

This CD is missing: "Sleigh Ride", "Little Fir Tree" and most importantly "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas". Those were the best songs on the album.

  3. This was THE Christmas album for me as I was growing up in the '60s and '70s. My mother still has the original scratched-up vinyl copy. What really makes it unique (in addition to some original songs written for the album) is the dialogue between the captain and Mr. Green Jeans between the songs. It really allows children use their imagination and feel like they are out in the snow, etc., with the characters. The dialogue also leads into the songs and sets up wonderful scenes in the mind's eye.

I was amazed when I found this album on CD a few years ago. I always thought it was too obscure of a Christmas album to be released on CD. Get it while you can and enjoy!

Note: I gave this current CD version of the album 4 stars because of the unfortunate deletion of 3 songs from the original album (I love the missing "Little Fir Tree" - where else would you hear this song!). I was fortunate, however, to have purchased the CD on the "Drive Archive" label (also found on this website, but "out of stock" - probably forever). That 1998 release had all 17 songs from the original album. It is unbelievable that the current label which has released the CD this time around has deleted 3 songs! Why???!!!

  4. I bought an old, but clean copy of the original album from the 1960's based on the glowing reviews listed elsewhere for this recording. I think that children could certainly enjoy this album, but it isn't much to listen to for those of us who did not grow up with it. Mr. Green Jeans can sing, but Captain Kangaroo can't really carry a tune. I do agree with other reviewers that the songs left out on the CD are some of the better ones on the album. If they were going to cut something, they should have cut the rendition about the Christmas Carol.

Overall, fun for kids and those who were kids when they heard it first.

  5. Wanted to replace the old vinyl record my parents have had since I was little, 25+ years. Too bad it doesn't have all the original songs, "The hippo song"
