1. The song selections were good. However, what I messed when I looked at the albums was "Original Artist Re-recording".
   
   Folks my age want to hear what they heard on their radios in the late fifties and early sixties, and on American Bandstand. This wasn't it.
   
   Still, I enjoyed the album. I would be great for someone who wasn't familiar with Doo Wop and wanted a feel for the music of that era.

1. Although I'm a huge fan of Mel Torme, I could hardly hear him or the musicians on these Discs, because the sound quality was so poor. These CD's were made from recordings that were not stereo albums to begin with, so I assume this resulted in what I would characterize as a weak, thin, scratchy, hard to hear sound track.



2. Want something to listen to on a Saturday afternoon whilst dusting and cleaning the pad? Then this is the set for you. All of Mr.Torme's tunes are pleasing and soothing.They don't call him "The Velvet Fog" for nothing! You will truly enjoy this set whether you are an old fan or a newcomer to his music (as I am ). Definitely worth the money!

1. This box set has a good mix of well known and influential jazz music from the 20s, 30s, and 40s, and with 40 CDs each about an hour long, it took me quite a long time just to listen to all of them enough times to start to recognize the songs.

   However, after having listened to all of the CDs about a dozen times over the last few years, I feel that I have cultivated a broad knowledge of jazz standards. Now, when I go to a jazz club or even just listen to the radio, I can frequently name songs that my friends mistakenly assume are originals.

   The drawback of this collection is that many of the recordings, and the ones from the 20s, in particular, are inevitably of poor quality. In fact, it often sounds like the drummer was banging on a pie tin or the vocalist sang underwater. Nevertheless, more than two-thirds of the recordings are of acceptable sound quality, and I urge any one looking to expand his knowledge of early jazz for a pittance to buy this collection.

   I am giving this collection 5 stars despite the sometimes poor sound quality because it is such a bargain and provides a good, if not entirely comprehensive education in early jazz.




2. Nearly 40 hours of digitally remastered original 78s and 45s for less than $1 each. No, you aren't getting the 1000 greatest hits of the 30s & 40s, but this is a great collection, but at 10% of the price, you get a lot of standards.

   Also see the similarly priced "Big Band Box" and "Great Vocalists of Jazz and Entertainment" collections by the German "History" label.

1. The History label has put out several box sets of 40 jazz CDs. I have three and plan to buy more.

   Compared to the other two History label box sets I have, The Cradle of Jazz and The Big Band Box, the recordings in From Swing to Bebop are more recent than the other two, and so the sound quality is also markedly improved, although by no means flawless by today's standards.

   As in the other two, this box set gives a good overview of the leading musicians of the time with two CDs by each of Charlie Parker, Django Reinhardt, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Ben Webster, and three CDs of music by Fats Navarro. Notably absent is bebop legend Dizzy Gillespie, although Gillespie can be heard on a few of the tracks featuring other musicians.

   This collection is heavier on swing than it is with bebop, and purists would probably find fault with some of the selections and ommissions. However, given the price, I think any jazz fan can easily supplement gaps left behind in From Swing to Bebop and still save a bundle of cash as compared to trying to buy the music by all of these artists individually.

1. Nat "King" Cole's, Unforgettable [Box Set] [Import] is truly a very special and remarkable piece of work! His songs and lyrics have a quality to them like none other I know. "Those Lazy-Hazy-Crazy Days of Summer" is most definitely by far his best work, and it is played here in the finest quality that the CD has to offer.

3. Because this set covers such a variety of musics some of it will fail to satisfy, but once you've programmed your favourite tracks it's great. While the concept of scores and songs is a good one, even 4 discs cannot do everything justice; it may have been a better idea to have separate sets for scores and songs. And the velvet cover may have seemed like a good idea, but I know the tacky plastic case won't last, and the whole set will eventually look pretty ragged.



4. I Actually Thought The Compilation Was Good.Discs 1 And 4 Are The Best.The Music Selection Is Good,But They're Missing Tracks From Films Like "THE OUTSIDERS","SESAME STREET PRESENTS:FOLLOW THAT BIRD" And Others That Escape My Mind At The Moment.On The Whole,I Liked It.



5. It`s a great set. But in the film scores section, we`ve been shortchanged.In the 50 years set, we have Korngold`s Adventures of Robin Hood, Sea Hawk and Kings Row cues unavailable else where esp. Randy and Drake - love theme from Kings Row. The Rhino Korngold double CD set is very disappointing in sonics but great on quantity. Wish the studios would release the original film soundtrack from Kings Row including the choral ending.

   Will put forward my views later - got to get some sleep !

1. This cd very good. All great crooner is here. Bing is here Russ is here. All good jazz crooning is in this cd, you enjoy it, i promise.



2. These guys were all considered "hotties" of thier time, and men really knew how to sing bacj than, in massculine crooning voices. These guys really get to me especially Russ Columbo! The entire cd is great, and it's important historicly. A great 2 cd set!



3. I keep a copy of this cd at all of my Texas beach houses, i love this cd and I love lovers(everybody loves a lover...), Give this cd and a bottle of wine to any jazz lover(or any lover for taht matter, hahahahaha!!!). This cd includes Bing Crosby, Red McKenzie, Willard Robison and many more great crooners, thsi is teh difinitive crooner cd. A must buy.



4. This cd is absolutly perfect in every way(you get 2 cd's of the worlds finest world class crooners). Who the heck cares if al Bowlly isn't here, every other crooner worthy of mention is(maybe Johnny Marvin is missing). Crosby, Sinatra, Haymes, seger Ellis, Gene Austin, Harlan Lattimore, Harold Arlen, and many others. This cd is the best cd ever!!! Buy it today, it should be called introduction to Crooners 101.



5. This is simply the best two cd set in my collection of over 5000 jazz, blues and swing cd's. Every track is a gem, particularky the Red McKenzie tracks. Such great crooners as Gene Austin, and Chick Bullock are all explores. The lesser known crooners like Seger Ellis & Harlan Lattimore are the real find here. Buy this one now, while you can.
