5 comments about Inside Pink Floyd: A Critical Review 1967-1996.

  1. This critical review is useless. It could be probably 60 minutes long only including the material that is worth it. What are those empty comments by Mostly Autumn? It hurts my intellect, give me a break.

  2. I can understand some of the negative comments of other viewers, but I found the DVD a good historical re-cap of Floyd to include some back-stage shots I had not previously seen. I enjoyed some of the goodies that come in the DVD.

There are no earth-shattering revelations to those who know Floyd. Yes, we know about Syd and David vs. Rogers, etc. etc. However, someone not from my generation that is just getting into Floyd may find some of this DVD interesting.

I don't think the producer intended the DVD set to be a compilation of Floyd, however. I think that it is worth the price of $30 to gain a bit of insight. I don't think it is overly remarkable but it was very interesting to me, nevertheless.

  3. This should really be called something like "The members of Mostly Autumn and a few critics talk about Pink Floyd." Now, I don't have anything against Mostly Autumn. Heather Findlay is quite nice to look at, they're all Floyd fans as I am, and I'm sure their music is very pleasant. But why am I supposed to care when one of them talks about why they personally like a particular Floyd track?

Whatever the case, I give this set an extra star, as I feel most of these knock-off "Critical Review" things deserve, solely for the obscure music clips they dig up. It's nice to get some rarely seen clips of our favorite bands in action. Granted, this was probably done out of necessity, as the makers of this series appear to have not secured the rights to any official releases, but in the end, it's one of the few things that make this series mildly interesting. Yes, the clips we get are usually only small snippets with mediocre sound quality, but then nowhere do these "Critical Reviews" claim to focus on musical performances. They are what they say they are -- reviews. More *fan* reviews in some cases than actual *critical* reviews, but whatever.

The only thing that irked me was having cover bands (including Mostly Autumn) performing some of the original tunes over Floyd-related graphics, presumably when no unprotected Floyd performance of the original track could be found. I think I'd rather hear nothing at all than a second-rate cover version.

  4. We don't need these useless talking on Pink Floyd and cheap production giving just SECONDS of vintage live performances of the band. Comments would really come from the people who actually lived the experience.

All we want is the ultimate video compilation of the band with films that actually exist; material that has been largely bootlegged. This is just a small bunch of the most popular, up to DSOTM, that it could be the video support for a real "Critical Overview Part I: 67 - 73":

    - January 20 1967 UFO Club - Joe Durden Smith filmed the band for Granada TV
    - Top of the Pops - April 6 1967 "Arnold Layne" and July 6 1967 "See Emily Play"
    - PF at Tabernakel - 1968 BBC promo film for Set the Control for the Heart of the Sun (once available on bootleg DVD)
    - Belgium promo clips (67 to 69) - this large selection of promo clips has been largely bootlegged all around the world. Isn't it time for an official release?
    - American Bandstand - with Barrett (68)
    - Live at KQED studios USA with Gilmour (70) - The first official release was recently withdrawn by OBSCURE and greedy hands... (Who are they?). This one has been available on bootleg as Live at Fillmore both on audio and video.
    - PF live at Saint Tropez (1970) - formerly shown on French TV program "POP Deux" and recently available on bootleg DVD.
    - Complete Kralingen Pop Festival (70) - on Stamping Ground DVD is shown only excerpts of 2 tracks (bad sound and bad image). The band performed one hour and a half.
    - Music Power: European Music Revolution - a film by French director Jerome Laperrousaz based on the 1970 rock festival held at Amougies (Belgium) - The band performed Interstellar Overdrive jamming with festival host Frank Zappa (Zappa denied the meeting but there are photos of it).
    - Dark Side of the Moon at Rainbow Theatre - On the official DSOTM DVD is shown a part of this performance in stunning condition (both audio and image).

This is the real thing, so: Do we need all these so called Critical Reviews about PF? I think we don't. In fact Pink Floyd doesn't deserve it.

  5. if you enjoy a bunch of bloated english men and women yap on about stufff you already know about pink floyd this is the dvd for you....there is only 20 sec blips of live preformances mix in with people gushing over the band...it suck do not waste you money...

  1. I have owned numerous releases of the vinyl and CDs of this album over the years, and I would have to say this is the best sounding one of them all. The packaging is top notch as well, with the CDs encased in a great box that replicates the front and back covers of the original album.

The music itself is great, of course. As it would turn out, this would be the only real album legendary guitarist Jeff Beck would record with the Yardbirds. Shortly after this released, the Yardbirds lost Paul Samwell Smith, gained Jimmy Page, and then lost Jeff Beck. For a short time, Beck and Page led a two pronged guitar attack, which two of the best songs on this collection, "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" and "Psycho Daisies," capture. It always leaves me to wonder what could have been if only the Beck/Page era had lasted longer.

  2. This classic album is worth springing for in mono, even if you have it in common stereo. There is not a real lot of difference in the mix, maybe slightly more echoy vocals in parts, but it has more punch, a different feel, just typical mono, and hey it's still one of the all times greats.

5 comments about Tobacco Road.

  1. Good British Invasion one-hit wonder from the mid-'60's. After hearing all twenty-nine of these cuts I am sort of amazed this band had just one hit. Certainly several 'could-have' and 'should-have-been-a-hit' tunes are on this import reissue CD. Tunes like their sole smash "Tobacco Road", "Mona", Willie Dixon's "Hoochie Coochie Man", the foot-stomping "Google Eyes", Richie Valen's "La Bamba", the boogie piece "TNT", the blues standard "I'm Coming Home" and "That's My Woman" are all worthy of your full support. Looks like you get the original lp's 15 tracks + 14 bonus cuts. Very nice.

  2. Musically they were easily the equals of contemporaries such as the Animals and Manfred Mann, but despite the massive success of their version of John D Loudermilk's Tobacco Road (in turn inspired by the Erskine Caldwell novel), they never seemed to excite the star-making machine in the same way, and are now remembered almost entirely for that one hit, despite the success of its follow-up Google Eye and other Top 40 hits. They were the band of choice to play behind visiting rock and rollers such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley, but perhaps the Mods and Rockers wars placed them too firmly in the Rockers camp at a time when Mods may have had the greater buying power and influence.
An appearance in bizarre teen movie Gonks Go Beat failed to enhance their charisma quotient either, and their name, a tribute to the music capital of the world, falsely labelled them in the minds of the teenage market as saccharine country wannabes, not helped by the fact that the band were in no way Teens but in their mid-twenties at the time.
Their showcase album of 1965, Tobacco Road, demonstrated their forceful sound and versatility and featured both sides of all their first three Decca singles (including the storming T.N.T.) as well as Bo Diddley's Mona, Mose Allison's Parchman Farm and Don Gibson's Hurtin' Inside. On Chris Kenner's I Like It Like That they mishear the lyric and repeatedly sing, "Come on, let me show you were I sat", as if giving a guided tour of an old classroom. How Deep Is The Ocean? and La Bamba seem slightly odd choices and may have been learned from a 1963 single by Shel Naylor.
On this admirable Repertoire definitive re-issue a further thirteen tracks from singles, plus their contribution to Gonks Go Beat (Poor Boy), are included. What'cha Gonna Do? was the B-side to This Little Bird, whose non-inclusion is a major omission, it making some headway in the charts until being beaten off by Marianne Faithfull's version of the same John D Loudermilk song. Similarly, Upside Down has been selected in preference to its Top 50 A-side The Hard Way. The Biggest Night Of Her Life shows them tackling a Randy Newman song in a slight change of direction in 1967. Their striking version of All Along The Watchtower probably just pre-dates Jimi Hendrix's 1968 masterpiece and includes a driving guitar phrase borrowed from the Animals (whom Barrie Jenkins from the Teens was shortly to join).
The most recent track, from 1971, is Roy Wood's Ella James (their first single for Parlophone, and the only stereo track on the CD), which the Move also recorded the same year, but the album closes with its B-side, Tennessee Woman, a bit of an oddity as the same recording had crept out the year before on Parlophone as the B-side of The Train Keeps Rolling by the so-called Arizona Swamp Company

  3. This set was given as a gift to fill a hole in my British Invasion collection. I was pleased to add Tobacco Road and Find My Way Back Home to that collection. Both were played on the radio in the sixties and one was a huge hit. I was not familiar with a lot of the other songs. I suppose you would need to be a rabid Teens fan to know them all. Many were likeable tunes and others were not. This set is definately for Nashville Teens diehards. Tobacco Road remains one of the highlights of the British Invasion. Hearing this collection explains why their USA chart life was short.

  4. Nashville Teens grow out of british rock`n'roll in the early sixties and became one of the most underrated of the uk-bands. Only two hits, the hard-hitting version of John De Loudermilk song Tobacco Road and the follow-up Google Eye. the rest made just little of traces. This collection cover most of their Decca recordings plus the late Parlophonesingle Ella James. all of their recordings are hard to come by today. This cd includes the only-us LP and the Decca issued 45's. Here is very broad collection of semi-hard-rock and good 60's pop. Nashville Teens stands up very good still after nearly 40 years after the first recordings were made. The only fault of this cd is that none of the very hard to find out-takes that New World Label issued in the early 70's are included. I also miss the very rare 45 that they did together with Carl Perkins in 1963 I think. But you can't get evrything even if you would like that. The sound-quality is good as always from Reportiare label. Highly recommendely - a must for everyone who's even slightly interested in uk-invasion bands!

  5. This is one of those 1964 Brit. bands from the first wave invasion. Excellent and stunning musicians. This CD is simply a beautiful set and collection of where they were at during this period. I highly recommend this CD. I have it on vinyl from the original 64 release and just recently picked it up on CD. Don't miss this one.

5 comments about The Hollies - All Time Greatest Hits.

  1. It is a good colection of Hollies music. It has "Bus Stop" and "Carrie Anne" but the song it's really missing is "Listen to me"

  2. All i can say is Wow i'm glad i bought this disc,
it truely is worth the money . The sound quality is terffic .

i can't believe all the songs the hollies did that i know it's great get yourself a copy today.

    Highly recommended!! way go curb!

  3. I've always loved the Hollies, but if you want a more complete sample of their oeuvre (including several major British hits that were not released in the U.S.), try the "20 Golden Greats" cd.

  4. All the groups that came out in the 60's,The Hollies are still played on the radio. From there beutifull ballads,"The Air that I Breathe,"to one of the greatest rock and roll songs ever,"Long Cool Women." I had my first reck when I was in high school, and this song was playing. I still can't get enough of this classic. One of the greatest guitar rifs ever. The Hollies didn't stand still with there music, they grew from "Carrie Ann" to the beutifull,"He Ain't Heavy,He's my brother." The Hollies have put there mark in Rock and Roll Music.

  5. This is fine and all, but their best collection is the Greatest Hits (Epic). WIth King MIdas and a few others, it is so much better and the order of the songs is more interesting. This is good, but why not have the best (that you thought you were getting)

5 comments about Anthology: Downtown to Sunset Boulevard.

  1. This singer produced alot of brilliant songs.Had an excellent voice, and in fact still tours sometimes.
I love the song Downtown and I know a place.
A Sign Of The Times is another Fav of mine, but my favourite track is Color My World.
This is a great anthology from this singer who has had a stellar singing career.

  2. I JUST LOVE PET, WHO HAS BEEN PERFORMING WORLDWIDE FOR APPROX 58 YEARS AND SINCE A CHILD IN WAR TORN, BOMBED OUT LONDON, WHERE AS A CHILD SHE SANG ON THE BBC TO THE WWII TROOPS AND LATER ENTERTAINED THEM IN PERSON---WOW---SO MUCH PETULA---FOR SO LONG---ALL OVER THE WORLD:)
PETULA HAS A DVD AVAIL AT PBS.ORG AND IT HAS LOTS OF ARCHIVAL FOOTAGE THAT IS REMARKABLE. IF YOU GET A CHANCE TO SEE HER IN PERSON, I SUGGEST IT MAY BE ONE OF THE UNKNOWN GEMS IN ANYONES LIFE---THINK OF 58 YEARS OF PERFORMING---ON TOP OF HER GAME WORLDWIDE AND WITH HUMILITY, PASSION AND COMPASSION.

THIS WONDERFUL LADY HAS DONE IT ALL!
LONG TERM MARRIAGE, CHILDREN, INTERNATIONAL CAREER AND ABOVE IT ALL --- SHE IS A DARLING, TO SO MANY FOR SO LONG. LOVE YOU PET, THANKS FOR SHARING YOUR TREMENDOUS VOICE AND PERSONALITY WITH US THROUGH THE YEARS----A LEGEND, A ICON, AND MUCH, MUCH MORE THAN NORMA DESMOND EVER DREAMED OF!

I SUGGEST HER MOVIES "FINIANS RAINBOW", "GOODBYE MR. CHIPS" AND HER PERFORMANCE IN "BLOOD BROTHERS" AND ANYTHING FROM HER BROADWAY PERFORMANCE IN "SUNSET BOULEVARD"

"I JUST COULD LIVE WITHOUT YOUR LOVE".....

  3. Who else but Pet Clark could sing such great songs such as:
    Downtown; I Know A Place; My Love; A Sign Of The Times;
This Is My Song; (and my personal favorite) Don't Sleep
In The Subway. This is a great anthology from a talented
singer! There's so many greatest hits packages out there,
but this is the one to buy!!

  4. This is certainly one of the best Petula compilations around, covering all aspects of her career from Downtwown to the end of the last century. It does not include any of her pre-Downtown material, nor does it include any of her French recordings, but these aspects of Petula's career are not widely known in America. For anybody interested, there are other Petula CD's which cover those recordings extremely well.

Most of the first CD is filled with Petula's American hits from the sixties. The last few tracks on the first CD and the whole second CD cover many different types of song, including stage and screen songs. None of these songs are anything like her hits from the sixties, although anybody familiar with Petula's pre-Downtown work will see it as a return to her roots. Petula has been both singing and acting since the 1940's. In the early days, acting was her priority.

For those of you who are only interested in her sixties music, this collection is probably not the one to buy. I've set up an Amazon guide (So you'd like to ...... know which Petula compilation to buy) which compares the merits of around thirty different Petula compilations, many of which I own. If in doubt, read that guide.

This is a top-quality compilation, impeccably remastered. If you have wide musical tastes, this will provide many happy hours listening. You can't get bored with such a varied collection.

  5. For those of you who don't own any of Petula's CDs (if such a thing is possible), this is definitely the one to get. You get her old standards in their original versions, some rare finds, plus some of her best work on the stage, such as songs from the musicals Blood Brothers or Sunset Boulevard, etc. Besides, the booklet includes interesting comments by Petula about each track. Don't hesitate about which one to get. This is it.

5 comments about Live at Leeds.

  1. First time I heard this was over FM radio wearing headphones lying in bed, listening. They played the whole thing and they had short interval of somthing weird and then played the next cut, did this for the whole album, it was 1970 somthing.
IF you havent listened to this whole thing with real headphones without distraction, do it, trust me, do it, I would not lie.
Good lesson for guitar players also.

  2. It's The Who. Live. At Leeds University. Duh. How come you haven't bought it already? Powerful live set from seminal rock four-piece, blah, blah, sizzling energy, innovative songwriting, blah blah....Keith Moon....buy it. Listen to it. Have mind blown.

  3. Amazing live album is all that i have too say for this. The drums are absoutley amazing Keith Moon is probaly one of the greatest rock drummers of all time his peformance is great here. Pete Townshends guitar is great and everybody in this is really doing great on there instruments.

This may just be one of there greatest peformances of all time it has the energy and they sound just really great here i think all the live versions sound great on here

If your a big Who fan like me buy this album today you wont be dissapointed...

  4. Really horrible sound quality, and the band must have been totally wasted...Apparently with so many for sale , others thought the same.

  5. I'm not a huge fan of The Who but this record is undeniable. The band is on fire and at a creative peak. I actually like the single disc version more than the double (I'm not a fan of the Tommy material, sorry). Everyone needs a copy of this.

If you like high energy R&R like this and MC5, Stooges, Ramones, etc check out Mighty High...In Drug City.

5 comments about Distant Light.

  1. This is by far the best Hollies album ever! The memories of the time in life and its relativity to the future is awesome. This is one of a few albums I have owned in LP, 8 track, cassette, and cd! It is a timeless recording that just gets better as the years go by. Everbody knows this album by its big hits "long cool woman in a long dress" and "long dark road" but every song on this is a classic! From "Look what we've got" , to "To do with love" to " cable car" there is a story in every song! My favorite song is "hold On." Another amamazing thing about this album is the cover depicting a young boy in spring looking in the water seeing his future in the reflection of the water. This is a story of life at its best! The second best album is "romany" that is now available on cd! The album cover shows an older man standing by the lake in his older years in winter time . If there is a couple of albums you can't live without these are the two to get! The Hollies made changes after "Distant Light" with a new singer but the heart and soul of the Hollies continued!!!!!!!! Enjoy!

  2. the hit long cool woman in a black dress doesn't really fit here .the other songs are sort of dark for the hollies.its sort of a transition cd from the stuff they were doing in the sixties. alan clarke left soon after its completion i can understand why.not a really hollies sort of record.

  3. Distant Light features the original Hollies at the top of their game, although Distant Light is bettered by their follow-up release, Romany, which does not include Allan Clarke. I used to always think Distant Light was the best Hollies album, although time and listening to their catalog has allowed me to see that Allan Clarke left the Hollies in their prime. Clarke must have soon realized this, himself, which is why he rejoined the band and recorded the self titled Hollies album, with The Air That I Breathe, so he could regain the momentum the Hollies were building. While there are very many good songs on Distant Light, such as Promised Land, Long Cool Woman and Long Dark Road, Allan Clarke abandoned the momentum the Hollies had established in the early 70's to pursue a solo career. The result was that the remaining Hollies recruited Swedish singer Mikael Rickfors and together they went on to produce Romany which I feel has an even more enjoyable sound. It's truly unfortunate that Romany is not more widely available, although I suspect that it has something to do with copyright wrangling among various individuals. I got my EMI CD of Romany after winning Hollies' Four More Originals on EBay for forty-five dollars. I must say that after not hearing Romany for many years, I have come to the conclusion that it is their best album. Imagine what Allan Clarke must have been thinking when he first heard the same solid harmonies of the Hollies accompaning a different lead singer on solid songs like Touch or Jesus Was a Crossmaker? He must have begun pulling his hair out when he heard the title track, Romany, which is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful songs ever performed by anyone! I almost wish Allan Clarke had stayed away from the Hollies for a couple more years, in order to see what might have followed Romany! While the self-titled Hollies album has some good songs, the momentum quickly faded away with Write On and A Crazy Steal. For those who are unable to find a copy of Romany, you will find the song Romany, as well as Down River from the same album, on 'Taking A Bow' by the Hollies which is a inexpensive Greatest Hits CD.

  4. Another hidden gem among their collection of albums. Fine for parties or solo listening. Waiting to be discovered by later generations.

  5. I purchased the vinyl album of Distant Light back in the 70's when I bought my first Dual turntable for my new stereo system. It is a great album and should be reintroduced to CD. The songs that hightlight the album are A Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress, Long Dark Road, Life I've Led and Little Thing Like Love. I think that the powers that be should reissue this album. I think this album is a key album in the evolution of the Hollies.
