5 comments about Dragnet.

  1. I bought this when it came out in 1979 and it remains possibly my favorite Fall album, maybe Hex Enduction Hour is better, but I have a sentimental attachment to this one. This is the Fall at their best I think, the album is worth buying just for Specter vs Rector which is a truly astonishing track. The Fall were one of the most important bands of the 70's/80's and of my life.

  2. The Fall upset a few listeners when they released Dragnet; some of those who liked Live at the Witch Trials didn't cotton to the 'muddy' recording quality and 'crude' playing they found on this, their next album. The whole thing seemed to point to that which the late Claude Bessy called "the overall uncomfortableness of everything".

"This is the kind of music I would buy," replied Mark E. Smith to complainants. It's the kind of music you should buy, too. Psykick Dancehall, A Figure Walks, Printhead, Muzorewi's Daughter, Choc-Stock, Put Away are all wonderful songs.

So, listen up kiddies: there's nothing else like this album of music in the whole wide world and you ought to have it and cherish it and listen to it lots. As Mark himself says: "Let's get this thing together... and make it bad."

  3. This is the first of the "dark" Fall albums, and one of the best. Special attention should be paid to the epic "Spectre vs. Rector," a truly insane vamp based on a one note bass riff and crazed lyrics about demonic possession. Fun stuff. "A Figure Walks" is a nice blue print for those damn "goth" bands, and "Flat of Angles" is one of those accidental "pop" songs they do sometimes. Hey, it's a hit in my house. Not the place to start, but a must for fans, sounds great on cd.

  4. I waited some 15 years myself before I heard this, during which time frame I became familiar with most of the Fall's catalogue and came to think of them as one of the great bands of our time.

I don't think this LP works well. It lacks the tight musicianship and sonic clarity of "Live at the Witch Trials", and lacks the cohesion of the next album "Grotesque". Some of Smith's lyrics here are completely self-referential and childish ("Choc-Stock" for example). Several seem inspired by comic books. The music is amateurish in large part - they sound like a mediocre punk rock band in places ("Print Head" for example). Three of the tracks hereon are contained in live form on "Totale's Turns", and sound much better there.

I think of this as an experiment that failed - and fail it did (it wasn't even released in the US, and broke up the band's momentum in England). I hear no must-hear tracks on here. But they did refine and reuse many of the ideas on here in later LPs.

  5. I waited thirteen years to get this record. No trace of disappointment. The perfect successor to 'Live at the Witch Trials', and a fine predecessor to 'Grotesque'. Mark E. Smith's lyrics are at their paranoid best recounting strange tales of depravity, such as 'Flat of Angles'. Eminently suitable for odd moods, or most other times.

5 comments about Death Church.

  1. Death Church is a great album, definitely one of the best purchases I've made in awhile. While I wouldn't claim to be punk myself, nor an anarchist or a vegan, as these guys were, I can definitely appreciate the fury with which Nick Blinko delivers his messages. This is pure rock, snotty, snarling and heavy. As with most punk albums, the tracks are pretty quick and center around the vocals and a fierce sounding guitar, but what stands out for me are Blinko's morbid, death obsessed lyrics and the little unexpected oddball moments ("...when you are a martian church, awwwwwww...") where Blinko's personality shine through. The themes are rather socio-political, but the music rocks too much to really care. Plus, as always, I dig the horrific imagery and dirge-like qualities of the songs... it's pretty apparent why the band were considered both 'crust' and 'deathrock.' It's highly enertaining noise and everyone should give it a try.

  2. i used to have this on vinyl and the two ep`s as well...i have been listening to these guys for 24 years now...and i must say this album got a hell of a lot of play time, the second ep got played alot too but not as much.if you want to have a look at the sleeve of death church..the singer drew all of it by hand...some work there

  3. Rudimentary Peni are and have always been a cult band of sorts. You either get it or you don't. If you're a moronic meat head who prefers slick soloing, tough guy posturing, no lyrical or artistic merit, or something you can just lift weights to while trying to seduce the dumb republican blonde who looks down her nose at you(and every other human being for that matter) then this CD is not for you. Stick to Nickelback or Black Hater Society like all the other insecure posers. Rudimentary Peni play music for the truly ousted and disturbed individuals of society. Death Church, in my opinion, isn't their absolutely best work(that would probably be Cacophony or The EPs of RP) but it is an offering that possibly any lover of punk, post-punk, hardcore punk, and alternative metal can enjoy. The music and lyrics paint an atmosphere of chaos, desperate humor, suffering, and worldwide plight that can appeal to any disenfranchised person of the modern day. Along with fellow englanders, the Subhumans, Killing Joke, Crass, Rudimentary Peni describe a sad apocalyptic world with their own unique creative vision. Slower and snottier than their previous two EPs but more accessible than the two albums that followed, Death Church is a perfect portrait of the disease and puss the apathetic, dumb, greedy, and air-headed infected the world with in the eighties and a pessimistic mourning of the decades and stupidity that came beforehand. From the agonized 1/4 dead to the snide commentary of Dutchmen this band spews all that they are about. Poltical foil, worldwide disaster, macabre surrealist insanity, and brain-rotting despair have never been so well represented all in one since this disc. Like the Melvins who came about a little later and Black Flag of the same time, this band also mixes punk and early Black Sabbath very well. If you have a fondness for the alternative and the bizarre, please pass forth the currency to purchase this item. It is a choice I'm sure you will not regret.

  4. I'd like to start off by saying that I'm into all kinds of music, from bass slapping funk,to mindmelting grindcore to harsh noise to classical music to outlaw country to the musical stylings of the Boredoms. Not to brag, but I've heard a lot of different kinds of music. I own CDs of harsh, grating feedback and ear piercing screeches. That said, This is, without a doubt in my mind, the most irritating CD I've heard in my life. It is 32 straight minutes of cliched punk riffs, sterile drumming, and an unnecessarily terrible vocalist. To me, it sounds like a British person complaining in a thunderstorm. It doesn't pump me up or anything. It's just annoying. One thing that did get my attention though is that everything but the drums sounds underproduced. I've anticipated that people are going to accuse me of "not getting it" but I'm completely aware I don't understand. If I understood I wouldn't be bashing this album. I don't understand the rave reviews of this horrible album, and yes, this is a horrible album, even for a punk band.

  5. A raw, pulsating trip through a thinly veiled hallucinatory nightmare. a solid chug of distortion coexists with the visions of nick blinko under a veil of anarcho leanings. An album you won't regret buying.

5 comments about 1-2-3-4.

  1. This is a great album if you like fun, high energy rock. Jeevas mix good lyrics, great beats and eclectic guitar riffs to create an easy-to-listen-to album. I've depended on Jeevas to get me through long marathon training runs, as well as at house parties and long car trips - highly recommended!

  2. Kula Shaker was really a good band. But these time are gone, even though the music is left. It would be even worse to continue along the Kula lines for a new band of Crispian Mills, since "The Jeevas" is a totally new sound, a totally different philosophy. It's more old type of rock'n'roll, something if you took out the tablas from "Mystical Machine Gun". The album is very good in my opinion. "Virginia", "Teenage Breakdown" rocks hard, "What is it for?" and "Once upon a time" rocks soft, that means "1-2-3-4" rocks!

  3. ..I can't believe people have reviewed this album and NOT mentioned the cover of The Undertones' "You Got My Number".

  4. With Kula Shaker, although there would be brief moments Crispian Mills would shine as a guitarist, I've always thought he never demonstrated his full potential. In the same way John Squire was given a wider latitude with The Seahorses, The Jeevas offers a vehicle where Mills can unload musical ideas. Lyrically '1-2-3-4' seems to gravitate towards themes of Americana. Musically the sound is of stripped-down bluesy Britpop, in the same vein as Cast, The Bluetones, and Ocean Colour Scene. Obviously The Jeevas aren't Kula Shaker, rather rootsy guitar-rock, abrasive energy, and sparkling melodies.

  5. This is a very good record. That said, for leader Crispian Mills to disband Kula Shaker, one of, if not the greatest rock and roll band in the 1990's, in favor of this project, it doesn't make a lot of sense. For those keeping score, The Stone Roses made the same mistake a few years ago. Two amazing bands that let ego take center stage.

There is very good musicianship and great melodic rock and roll songs on here but when listening to it in full, you can't help but wonder what this album would have been if Kula Shaker recorded it. I'm sorry but I don't normally yearn for the past unless it's warranted. It's warranted.

Bottom line: It's still better than most new British rock and roll and certainly has it's merit being for the fact that all of this sound is driven by a power trio.

Buy this record and hope for a Kula Shaker re-union. That band was simply magic. This band is a particle of that magic.

5 comments about Tiger Bay.

  1. This version (The American version) has ten original songs, two remixes and "I Was Born On Christmas Day." The import version has fifteen original songs which show a wider range of musical creativity, although "I Was Born On Christmas Day" is missing. Both versions show the band focusing on their tunesmithing and tossing aside the soundscapes that (imho) mar much of "Foxbase Alpha" and "So Tough."

The Import/English release is the preferred version, but the American release will do well in your CD player. I own both, so I know.

  2. Of all the Saint Etienne cds I own, "Tiger Bay" is by far my favorite record. It is also my first cd I own by the British indie-pop band. I bought it several years ago through my then Columbia House Music Club account. I immediately loved the often kitschy dance pop I heard on the album. The music is very infectious and upbeat. "Tiger Bay" would eventually lead me to buy more of the group's albums but none of them would be able to hold up to "Tiger Bay". The album kicks off with the killer throbbing instrumental "Urban Clearway". "Hug My Soul" has a '60s retro pop sound. "Former Lover" is a delicate, fragile ballad. The beat quickly picks up with "Like a Motorway". One of my personal favorite songs on the album is the shimmering "Pale Movie". It is also one of my favorite dance songs of all time. I just love the melodies of the song as well as Sarah's vocals. I also love the fusion of flamenco guitars with dance beats. My other favorite song on the album is "I Was Born on Christmas Day". If there was one thing that Saint Etienne had a knack for it is churning out some of the catchiest pop songs I have ever heard. Just like one of their songs, listening to "Tiger Bay" hugs my soul. I find it very comforting to listen to. I just wish pop music was more like Saint Etienne and less like Britney Spears.

  3. For Tiger Bay, which I assumed was a nod to the Hayley Mills movie from 1959, Saint Etienne retained its heartfelt ballads made ever so loving by Sarah Cracknell's echoing waifish voice, but its upbeat tracks edged closer to conventional techno without sacrificing their uniqueness that brought them to the spotlight.

Talk about best track being the first one, though. The throbbing bass in "Urban Clearway" leads to a bass keyboard pulsing like The Miami Vice Theme before being overlayed by a higher-pitched keyboard sound. Then those sweet wistful strings kick in, giving an overall image of traffic going down a six-lane, just like the opening shots of the CHIPS TV show in the 1970's. Call it a shorter dance-techno version of Saturday Night Fever's "Manhattan Skyline," which gives the same mental image.

"Hug My Soul" is not only a brilliant song, but has the same bounce as some of their Foxbase Alpha songs, only chirpier and with some lush stringwork. Sarah Cracknell's wispy girlish vocals and the chirpy synthesizers create a bubbly, romantic, fantasy atmosphere, even before she sings: "I'll be there/to run into your arms./I'll be there./Won't you hug my soul?" Aww! There's even a marimba solo in the latter part of the song. The alternate version has an even more thundering beat that kind of muffles the lush strings.

The tempo switches to the mellow and wistful "Former Lover," with the harmonica lending to the sad regret of marrying a fool while listening to wind chines and the long lost days spent with the title character. Sarah wistfully sings: "Why on Earth/didn't I wait for you?/Now look and see who's paying." She then makes up her mind to reclaim her life, which has been stifled: "Close all/of the doors, Maisie/make sure he knows I'm gone./Close down/over the ocean/Open the doors/fresh air."

The same bass synthesizer from "Urban Clearway" returns in the upbeat "Like A Motorway." Another lost love song, the title refers to this line: "She said her life/was like a motorway/Dull, grey, and long/'til he came along." The alternate version has different synthesizers and other sounds inserted within.

"On The Shore" is an instrumental with mid-paced backbeat, with an oboe courtesy of Kate St. John, late of the Dream Academy.

"Marble Lions" is this album's sweet ballad, especially the lines "Stars are calling/goodnight, darling/Don't say good-bye," which lends that sense of longing that "Hobart Paving" from So Tough did. The lines "Let's raise a flag/that has no colours/release the sun into the empty cathedral, yeah" should demonstrate by now Sarah Cracknell's improved songwriting. The emotional swell of sound that arises makes one want to cry out joyfully or burst into tears of joy.

A Latin-sound accompanied by the Etienne burst of techno starts "Pale Movie." One of my favourite upbeat songs here, with an interesting metaphoric image: "In the bed where they make love/she's in a film on the sheets/He shows dreams like a movie/she's the softness of cinema seats." The Latin guitar that comes in the middle is nice as is the burst of symphonic strings that follow, making it like a movie score.

"Cool Kids Of Death" is a quick-paced instrumental with pulsing bass-synth that's a quicker cousin of "Stoned To Say The Least" from Foxbase Alpha. Harmonicas, wordless vocals, synth-pianos, and other instruments are heard in this number.

Then comes "I Was Born On Christmas Day," the most joyful burst of sound on Tiger Bay. Sarah trades lines with Tim Burgess over a pounding backbeat that Kylie Minogue would have gnawed both her arms to get during her Stock-Aitken-Waterman days. I imagine a couple dancing blissfully, snow falling down in nice large flakes around them and the city.

That is followed by the haunting "Boy Scouts Of America," about the conflict brewing within a man assigned to guard a girl.

The best of their first three albums, after which their sound would totally change, but that's for another review.

  4. What makes this album great is that everything works together so well. Most of the songs are dance-oriented, with a tight drum-machine dance beat, but there are some slow slongs as well.

What I really like are Sarah Cracknell's breathy vocals, which are heavenly and contrast very well with the bass and drums. The songs are still pop songs in composition and work very well, but you can also hear influences from various other styles such as drums&bass and techno, and perhaps some early New Order.

This album is more refined than "Foxbase Alpha," and is one of my favorites.

  5. Of the five Saint Etienne records released in the U.S., "Tiger Bay" has to be as close to the best work this British outfit ever produced. While many fans are partial to "Fox Base Alpha" or "Good Humor," this is the CD which best combines the band's ethereal instrumental tracks with some of the most maturely crafted pop songs Cracknell/Stanley/Wiggs have created in their 10+ years together. Ironically, the band took a few years off after recording this CD and it was their final release under the American Warner Bros. label. The track list also does not feature a single song written by all three of the bandmates together. Despite this record more or less marking the end of the "early" Saint Etienne era, the individual songs have a maturity to them which suggest that this is about the best Saint Etienne could do during their first few years together. The record features perennial fan favorite "Like A Motorway," along with two of their other big British hits, "I Was Born On Christmas Day" and "Hug My Soul." There are also some beautiful ballads written by vocalist Sarah Cracknell, including "Former Lover" and "Marble Lions" which stand alongside some of her best work as a solo artist. I think it's an essential part of any fan's Saint Etienne collection (if you have the UK edition with the bonus B-side tracks, it's a plus).

5 comments about If You've Never Been.

  1. Embrace, it must be said are not everyone's cup of tea. Each new Embrace album is met with adoration by fans and dismissiveness by the UK music press, and I must confess I find it a bit baffling. Too often they are laden with a sub-Oasis tag or considered to be Brit-rock also rans, but it's the fans that know the truth - Embrace are a much, much better band than often given credit for. Embrace's music is not cryptic or high-minded or inaccessible, and in today's art/musical/cultural climate these characteristics are considered as attributes.
However, If You've Never Been's appeal lies in it's heart-rending ballads and pulse-quickening rock, and it connects almost immediately. In this respect, Embrace's music is not at all unlike Coldplay's easy charm and melodicism. Take the opening song 'Over', it's a tremendously moving tune that begins with a simple, catchy, circular riff that slowly builds to a rapturous crescendo combining strings, guitars and Danny McNamara's soaring, aching vocals - truly visceral, spine tingling stuff. 'Hey What You Trying to Say' is of a similar mould - great hook, great chorus, nothing complicated but strongly felt. 'Many Will Learn' is perhaps the dark-horse in the pack, it isn't one of Embrace's more crowd pleasing or anthemic songs yet it has a subtle, unassuming beauty and poignancy to it.
To the uninitiated, If You've Never Been is a perfectly good place to start, and for existing fans, - with the likes of the warm and familiar single 'Wonder', there should be plenty here to, er, embrace.

  2. Actually, this is the first Embrace album I really listened to. I didn't have the chance to get The Good Will Out and by that time, this came out. Let me tell you, if you appreciate epic songs, you'll love this album. They are so good, it's sick. The guitarwork is great and the tunes are pretty catchy once you listen to them more and more. Wonder, the single, is easily one of the best on it. Over takes some listening to hear all the little nuances. If You've Never Been in Love with Anything is more pop driven and is reminiscent of the Kinks. Lush and highly underrated (in the US at least) overtures from a great brother duo. This shouldn't be an import!

  3. Yes, the songs are pretty similar in tempo... and they do all follow a similar pattern of moody verse rising to soulful chorus... but at last Embrace seem to have found their own voice. It was always a hollow accomplishment writing good songs that sounded like some one else. If you liked the first album (probably because you liked Oasis) then this may not be your cup of tea. If you've progressed to guitar music with a richer texture then this is worth a whirl. I was pleasantly surprised by the first three tracks and found myself humming the chorus hooks on the subway - always a sign of a worthy song...

  4. Embrace seem to have decided during the course of their first two albums that grandiose slow anthems seem to be what they do best.I would agree that these have probably been their better songs-but to fill practically a whole album with almost identical songs is to be honest on the verge of becoming boring. The songs on this album when taken individually are really good-it's just that over the course of a whole album they become barely distinguishable from each other. Each song is slow tempo ballad(there are a few exceptions),each song is filled with heartbreak, each song is very heavily produced, each song has major grand style musical arrangements-big band sound, full orchestra, quiet verse-big soaring chorus, etc. On the plus side Danny McNamara sounds better then he's ever done before. Many of the chorus' are really catchy and as I said if taken individually there are plenty of really good songs on the album. The arrangements are very polished, very ambitious and they come across as a band very skilled in the studio. Some of the vocal harmonies are really glorious especially on songs like 'I Hope You're Happy Now'.On the songs when they keep the arrangements simple-like 'Many Will Learn' it works really well and comes as a refreshing change to the other sonic bombardments. The closing track is also a magnificent 6 minute plus epic of sheer beauty, which builds slowly and very beautifully to a wonderful crescnedo.Of the two faster-well you'd have to say medium paced numbers song 5,'It's Gonna Take Time' is the better. It sounds quite like "You're Not Alone" from their previous album-great brass section in the chorus. On the negative side some of the lyrics are to be frank very cheesy and syruppy-nowhere is this worse then on track 9.Some of the soppiest lyrics I've ever heard to an otherwise good song. All in all this is way better then their last album-the consistency is quite remarkable. It isn't as good as the first one though. The songs are good,it's just that the band have become far to formulaic-there are no suprises on this c.d. for fans of Embrace.

  5. I feel that Drawn From Memory was easily the best album of 2000, and also an all time favorite. The fact that this album is even better should mean that Embrace are destined to become a household name around the world, mentioned in the same breathe as U2 or the Beatles. Sadly, as least currently, the music world appears to be in some strange state where real quality is not valued, or at least doesn't sell very well. The excellent in every way first single "Wonder" only went to #14 in the UK charts, and the band doesn't currently even have a record deal in the U.S. Ok, enough ranting - why is this album good? Simply because it contains 10 great songs which are each uniquely enjoyable on their own and taken together provide a wonderful and cohesive listening experience for three quarters of an hour. Along the way you'll be reminded again and again of the simple beauty of life, love, and even heartache. What more can one ask for from a music cd? Getting more specific about the tracks, the second single "Make It Last" is, like "Wonder", another classic Embrace anthem complete with beautiful soft building verse and soaring chorus. The sort of title track, "If You've Never Been In Love With Anything", is an uplifting, upbeat surprise that even contains some Beach Boys-like harmonies. "Happiness Will Get You In The End" with its soft piano reminds me of "Liar's Tears", in both musical and lyrical tone. "Satellites" provides a beatiful ending to the album. The other five tracks are each very good as well. I love this album, and it makes one feel that it loves you back.

  1. I got this album by accident. It was included with another Amazon used cd order. Wow! It turned out to be one of my new favorites. The songs are all different moods and genres. The ideas are fantastic. You really should check it out.

  2. I don't know about many of you, but the first encounter I had with Soul Hooligan was from a commercial for HBO after a boxing match, when they were using a clip from "Algebra". I immediately ran out and got the album for "Algebra", but I am very glad I got the whole thing.

This album borrows heavily from many other genres like hip-hop, jazz, rock, club, etc, yet it makes its own style and succeeds in doing so. The best description of this CD would be a combination of Moby, De La Soul, and Massive Attack, with maybe a little Overseer thrown in for spice.

The main attraction of the album is the intro track, "Algebra", which would be at home in just about any setting. It uses an overlooked instrument, the harmonica, for its main riff, and the hook will have you nodding your head with the beat.

"Addicted" and "Psychedelic Soul" change the tempo up a bit, and bring a club sound that you would not expect from the other tracks.

The feel of "Soul Searching" will evoke feelings of uptempo jazz and smoky, back-alley clubs. Very well-done.

For the hip-hop flavor, with sounds like early 90's De La Soul or even Das EFX, try out the track "Numb in Both Lips" or "Stoop Kid".

"Who's To Say" and "Time Goes By", two slow, drum-driven tracks that let you down easy, are a fitting decrescendo for an otherwise head-bopping album.

Overall, any of the tracks from this album could easily become your favorite, and it's likely that more than a few of them will. I highly recommend this CD, as it will garner quite a bit of playing time in your stereo.

  3. Yeah, gotta agree with all of the above: best Summer Cd to come across my path in a long time. "Algebra" just rocks!! Love "Stoop Kid" and "Start The Day" aswell. Highly recommended to those who don't mind a bit of pop mixed in with thier leftfield electronica.

  4. Soul Hooligan has created some of the most blastin breakbeat and hiphop sounds that I have heard since the likes of Atmosphere and some very early Wiseguys. peace out all

  5. ORDERED THIS US RELEASE ON THE RECCOMENDATION OF A FRIEND , WITHOUT KNOWING WHAT TO EXPECT , AND WAS GLAD I DID , SOME GREAT TRACKS IN THERE , LOVE THE HARMONICA AND SOME OF THE GROOVY BEATS.

  1. After 2-3 months or so of waiting, I finally received my copy of this three disc set. You need a computer to watch the dvd since that is the only way to get around the region restriction embedded on the dvd. Worth every penny though. Not only do you get all the music videos they released, you get a live show AND an interview with the band from around 2003. It's something that can not be fully appreciated in a sober state of mind. Everyone's gained weight and looks 10 years older. Other than that, it is funny to hear Clint Boon talk, as on the albums he has such a clear, good singing voice, but speaking he has a thick accent. Why buy it? Not just for the videos, but for the extras. Take a listen to the song "Iron" that was previously unreleased. Or, tick off your heavy metal loving friends with their hip hop remix of Ozzy's "Paranoid" featuring a duo of rappers with thick British accents. On the song "Paper Moon" they give you a hint as to the actual pronunciation of "Inspiral." But buy it for their last single, "Come Back Tomorrow" with one of the most creative and bizarre music videos ever to be seen. If you've ever liked IC, even for 5 minutes back in 1992, you have to get this.

  2. AWESOME PACKAGE HEAVY PAPER SLIP CASE WITH 3 CD JEWEL CASE THAT OPENS LIKE A BOOK 2 CD'S AND A DVD! CD1:COOL AS* IS A GREATEST HITS CD ALL THEIR BEST SONGS. CD2:RARE AS* IS A RARITIES CD WITH TWO GREAT COVERS TAINTED LOVE BY SOFT CELL AND 96 TEARS BY QUESTION MARK AND THE MYSTERIONS. NOW FOR THE DVD WHICH IS WHY I REALLY BOUGHT THIS SET. AFTER LISTENING TO THE 2 CD'S I POPPED THE DVD INTO MY SONY HOME SYSTEM DVD PLAYER AND A MESSAGE "CAN NOT PLAY" CAME UP! BEING IN EUROPEAN PAL/RC-0 FORMAT MAKES THE DVD UNPLAYABLE IN U.S.A.
