3 comments about Lucille Talks Back.
- I loved the LP title Lucille Talks Back in 1975? but I no longer have it ....so I will buy this CD although it is missing 4 songs from the LP and has 6 songs that were not on the LP and yet it says "original release". The 2 wah wah songs are on here -thankfully- and they get 5 stars
- LUCILLE TALKS BACK contains what I now come to expect from B. B. King: a superb collection of backing musicians playing at the height of their powers, with the King of the Blues himself front and center, pinging out blue notes from Lucille and singing his heart out. There's no standout song on here, all of the tracks are great, solid blues numbers
I'm always impressed by how crafted the music sounds on this album while still managing to feel spontaneous and natural. This is exactly what this sort of jazz/blues music should sound like. The percussion, the horns, the guitar solos, the vocals. Everything just sounds so right in a low-key but effective way. Nobody steps on anyone else's toes. All the parts fit together perfectly. This may not sound like much of a compliment, but it's only when you hear talent and skill such as is on display here that you realize how rare it is. A number of the tracks are live selections, giving the album a good jolt of energy. Don't get me wrong; the studio recordings here are tight. But there's just something appealing about hearing a great bunch of musicians performing in front of an appreciative audience. There's a lot of cheering, hooting, hollering and all kinds of audience participation. Great fun. This is an understated and underrated little album. None of the songs on here are instantly thought of when someone mentions B. B. King's name, but they're immediately identifiable as his. Energy, passion and emotion flow through this album; B. B. King and company make it all sound effortless. If you like good strong blues playing, then this CD should already be a part of your collection. It's not revolutionary or completely mind-blowing, but this is a fantastic piece for both beginners and longtime fans of the blues.
- B.B. King keeps on amazing me with every album. I found this one at a used record store and I still can't believe somebody would get rid of it. "Breaking Up Somebody's Home" is a fantastic cut. B.B. let's his guitar do alot of the talking and Lucille speaks loud and clear. Not everything B.B. has put out has been great, but this one should be in the collection of every blues fan. It is that good.

- B.B King is Incredible here. The Balance Between Blues&Gospel is A TRUE TEST OF HIS GENIUS.HE Has Been A Great Artist for so Long&Honest about his Craft. My Favorite Jam Here is How Blue Can You Get.His Voice&Guitar Picking are HIS TRADEMARK.
- Well... I've been a BB King fan for some years and I was quite pleased with this box set. What I liked most was the inclusion of his Gospel music. Songs like "Precious Lord" and "Save a seat for Me" are done with great conviction and sound terrific. The other CD is partly live partly early studio works. There are 2 problems with the CD. The sound quality isn't that great (esp on the 2nd disc) and they just aren't long enough. But hey... I liked it you might to ;-)

- This album was recorded in Chicago in 1961 and was originally on the Strand label, later reissued on Muse. Along with Slim it features the legendary guitarist Matt Murphy, who later went on to play with James Cotton and the Blues Brothers. For good measure John Calvin's alto sax, Johnny Board's tenor (referred to as "Junior" by slim), and a rhythm section of Sam Chatman and Billy Stepney are also part of the proceedings. COLD BLOODED WOMAN has an excellent Murphy solo, and FOUR WALLS has a very strong down-home feel to it. Slim's vocals are powerfull and searching, while his distinctive rolling piano style is always captivating. The band is tight, and the sax solos by Calvin and Board cut to the quick and are very emotional. Dig the Latin tinge on I'M LOST WITHOUT YOU, and I'm still wondering WHAT (the heck) IS THE MARE RACK? Not quite as good as the United sides Slim made with Murphy about 7 years earlier, but it's good all the same.
- An excellent collection of songs. The band assembled here is top notch, especially Matt "Guitar" Murphy playing a wonderful guitar. I really liked that it was a full band including a horn section with a few smoking sax solos. The songs here are strong ones musically and there is a nice variance of tempo between fast and slow. Memphis Slim is a legend and this CD does a nice job of showcasing him.
- I can't understand why Slim is not more famous. This is an amazing album. Great jazzy blues. Slim is deadly on the piano, and Matt Murphy's guitarwork is incredible. Rockin' album ... should be considered essential to any blues collection.
- Three cheers to 32 Blues for again giving us a fine reissue at a magnificent price. This disc from piano blues giant Memphis Slim is from 1961, and a prime recording it is. Slim had re-teamed with his 1950s guitar foil, Matt "Guitar" Murphy, and the magic is still there. Murphy stings with some sensational guitar licks on this band-oriented recording. This is not a "piano blues" album as such; yes, Slim plays piano, of course, but he doesn't solo and except for the introductions, his instrument is kept in the background. That's OK, though. His smooth/strident, city/country vocals are great and the band is slammin'. The only problems are average sound (some hiss and crackle) and short CD length. Still, solid stuff from possibly the most-recorded piano bluesman of all time.
