5 comments about Heart - Alive in Seattle.
- Heart is one of my favorite groups - Ann Wilson can sing ballads such as "Dreamboat Annie","These Dreams" and "Dog and Butterfly", she can also handle hard rockers such as "Magic Man","Straight On" and "Barracuda" which has been used in the 2008 Presidential race. Interestingly, Senator Hillary Clinton earned more Votes than any Presidential Primary candidate in the history of America -The Denver Group.
- This Rocks in HD. I was worried after reading a few reviews that the concert was bad or the recording was sub standard. Much to my relief this was incredible.
I have never heard their version of "Battle of the Evermore" sound better.
This whole thing makes me want to move to Seattle so I can see them live again and again. I have only had the pleasure once of seeing them live and that was back in the 70's before Barracuda came out as I remember.
My only other thought was I wish they would have done "Mother Earth Blues" and "Devils Delight".
- definitively a masterpiece with the best you can dream in terms of video pictures, sound and musical performance.
I didn't expect that when i ordered this blu ray. I was just looking having something from this band in the 70's in nostalagia with "boston" and all the others...
Then came the blast of this concert...these ladies and the band rock with talents difficult to find in today's music. Some great led zeepelin "reprises". woah...don't hesitate one second for buying.
- Ann's voice is as strong as ever and Nancy still looks cute as she jumps up and down while strumming power chords! ;)
This is a great performance with strong picture quality and excellent sound quality. One of the bad things about the HD DVD - Blu Ray war was picking a side and having titles released exclusively in the format you didn't own. This was originally released on HD DVD and I was able to catch the show on HD Net. I knew that I'd add it to my collection once it was released on blu ray.
This has a good set list with a little Led Zeppelin thrown in too. This is a must for die hard Heart fans and for others who'd like to add a Heart concert disc to their collection.
- I bought this as an upgrade to the stardard version on Dvd i owned. I thought it would be a huge upgrade considering all the great reviews. I loved this performance however if you own it on reg dvd its not worth the upgrade. save your money. the audio quality is no better than regular DTS.
the picture quality is only slightly better.

5 comments about Toys in the Attic.
- The CD plays fine but the cd case came broken. No lyrics to the songs. Why Not?
- This was the one cd I did not have in my collection. As usual the songs were all GREAT. The sound quality was very good. I have enjoyed listening to this cd many times.
- Wanted Aerosmith represented in my collection, but I think the live album might have been a better bet. This one just gathers dust.
- Second on the all time greatest Aerosmith albums list to the irrepressable ROCKS, Toys In The Attic saw the boys from Boston take flight and craft one of the all time classics of hard rock. It's most well known tracks are the uber cool "Sweet Emotion" and genre spanning "Walk This Way" which have been enduring radio staples for years. The album tracks are just as good. "No More No More" is a fantastic song detailing life on the road with great instrumentation, arrangement, lyrics and delivery with just a touch of sentimentality that makes the song one of the band's best. The album shows the band acknowledging their influences as well, "Round And Round" is Aerosmith at their absolute heaviest sounding with a thunderous Zeppelin riff while "Adam's Apple" is very Stonesy and would have fit perfectly on Sticky Fingers. The title track leads off the album and is a storming opener with great guitars and that classic repeating chorus "TOYS,TOYS,TOYS...IN THE ATTIC!". A must have for fans of hard rock pick this up with ROCKS today!
- What some consider to be Aerosmith's best album, Toys in the Attic certainly delivers a rock n' roll wallop! There just isn't a weak track to be found, here. If you're new to Aerosmith, this might be a good place to start. Filler that is anything-but comes between more well known Aerosmith tracks, like "Toys in the Attic," "Walk This Way," and "Sweet Emotion," but great albums aren't simply a collection of hits, and Toys delivers from top to bottom. If you like rock n' roll, I can't imagine how you might not like this album.

5 comments about Best of Van Halen, Vol. 1.
- Great mix of songs from my high school years. Having the hits all in one place lets me get great value. Jump! I think is my all time favorite Van Halen song. Great product.
- How stupid do a record label or band ( who knows which ) must be, that they won't make a partner to this album. WHERE IS VOL.2 ?? You must really not want the 1-2 million copies of this sold and all that money made. Wait much longer, and everybody will forget VAN-HALEN.

5 comments about If You Want Blood You've Got It.
- AC/DC live is just like heaven, especially with original lead singer Bon Scott. Now I'm not at all saying that Brian Johnson isn't great; he is, but he can't hold a candle to Bon, in my opinion.
And this live record, originally released in 1978 on Atlantic but reissued on Epic in the early 2000s, proves how great AC/DC is. With songs like 'Whole Lotta Rosie,' 'Rock And Roll Damnation,' and 'High Voltage,' you know this album is gonna rock.
And, I think Epic did an awesome job remastering this. The sound quality is superb.
While Scott was alive, he made some mighty fine records with AC/DC. And 'If You Want Blood You've Got It' (which is one of the best live records ever put out, in my opinion) is one of the best records that AC/DC ever put out.
Highly recommended for any rock or AC/DC fan. Classic heavy metal at it's finest. Well worth listening to, and better yet, owning. ENJOY!!!
- A great live album showcasing the Bon Scott era of AC/DC, this one really showcases a bluesy, dirty, barroom band that just happened to make it big. A great set of songs, here, with only three ("The Jack," "Problem Child," and "Whole Lotta Rosie") that really get any serious radio play, this album hits on a lot of exceptionally good, yet criminally overlooked material from Let There Be Rock and Powerage. And, of course, it allows for all of us who never had the opportunity to see Bon, a chance to hear him on a great live recording.
-
Start to finish, this is my favorite AC/DC album. Yes, I own "Back in Black" and "highway To Hell", among others, and they're great. But when I want a pure metal adrenaline rush loaded with hooks, nothing satisfies quite like "If You Want Blood...". You can just feel the anticipation of the audience with the amplifier buzz that starts before the boys rip into a searing rendition of "Riff Raff". Then, if that's possible, they up the ante with a totally smoking "Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be". And so it goes for the rest of this terrific CD.
This is a great document of one of hard rock's most original bands when Bon Scott was still lead singer and they were virtually unknown outside of Australia. The wildly appreciative Aussie audience couldn't have cared less and clearly knew they were onto something as the trademark AC/DC sound was already fully formed. If you have even a casual interest in AC/DC, then buy or download this album.
- I had just seen these guys live in Columbus, Ohio in September 1978 and bought this album soon as it was released, hoping to relive some of that experience. Soon as I listened to it, I wanted a refund!
It sounds NOTHING like their live show. The sound is too sanitized, cleaned up, polished, and almost "Top 40-groomed". Happily, in the years since, several other live recordings of this great band have been released, including the far more accurate "Plug Me In" collection. Just listen to the two back to back, and you'll see what I mean.
This band is aptly named, particularly during the Bon era. There was an energy to this band live that was palpable in the crowd, and this record fails to capture this. There are (finally, after years of waiting) better representations of this great band's live act.
By the way - the opening act for this September '78 show? Cheap Trick on the 'Heaven Tonight' tour. What a night!
- This band was the first rock band I started to listen too.
This has guitar riff that only Angus can play.
My rating for this CD is a 7 from 1to10!!

5 comments about Roger Waters - The Wall (Live in Berlin).
- There will probably never be another production with this much magic involved. The time was the Berlin Wall coming down, the place was Berlin. The crowd numbered in the tens of thousands. Luck and God was on their side to pull this off in so little time. AMAZING!!! There could not have been a better celebration of such a historical event in time.
- I saw the original broadcast, and it was terrific. After watching this DVD, I was awed and amazed. There probably won't ever be another like it again. A must have, especially for Pink Floyd addicts.
- I heard about this from a German friend. I love Pink Floyd and was skeptical at first because of all the other performers covering their songs. I was pleasantly surprised! Roger Waters kept it real. It was very well done, true Pink Floyd fashion. The staging was spectacular! The concert is long, so the on-going changes to the stage and set keep you intrigued. Wish I could have been there!
- WOW!! There is always power in the music of Pink Floyd. Never is this power more poignant than in this story of the mental breakdown of the rock star 'Pink'. And never is this story more powerful than in this re-release of the live concert at the Berlin wall. It's not the wonderfully mixed digital sound though, or the enhanced imagery, or even the all super - star cast. It is the message of breaking down walls, personal walls, political walls, even physical walls. Roger Waters should be proud that his music, and his message, can transend personal egos, and result in a synergistic moment that was, amazingly, caught on video. Whew! See this video-
- I like this band anyway. Roger Waters is not my favorite, as he was fired after this production. But it is entertaining.

5 comments about Flick of the Switch.
- Everyone knows the deal with this album. BACK IN BLACK and FTATR had reached multimillion sales and AC DC had reached a zenith few bands in rock ever hope to reach just a few years removed from their darkest hour.
Inevitably,When a band gets *this* popular, backlash creeps up and threatens to destroy what they had worked so hard to achieve. Just ask KISS. But unlike KISS, the Boys Down Under did all they could to retain the classic rock sound they were known for and made no effort to change their trademark formula.
Whenever I load this up, I think about how unfair this album gets treated. I'll admit the tone and 'wall of sound' power have been fractionally subdued. But the songs here for the most part are on par with their previous two chart-busters. And this album flows better than the oft-forced FTATR. "Landslide", "Brainshake" and "Flick of the Switch" and "Rising Power" are guiltless romps that fit perfectly among classics of other albums. And the others? They can do nothing to dissuade fans from getting. Get yours today for dirt cheap and stop the hatin'. :D
- AC/DC is a veteran band. they definitely proved it in the 1980's with album after album. their sound has scarcely changed. they will probably be rocking until doomsday. this album is definitely a classic and rightfully so. I like the song "This House Is On Fire" but the rest of the album is good too. I cannot wait for their new album to come out.
- One good song, this album sucks. What the hell happened? The Bon albums were gold back in black showed promise now this.
- Following closely on the heels of two albums that are considerably more well known (1980's legendary Back in Black and, on the strength of its title track, 1981's For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)), Flick of the Switch is an oft overlooked, but still very worthwhile chapter in AC/DC's career, and is second only to Back in Black among Brian Johnson era albums.
Beginning with the straight up arena rocker "Rising Power," it's clear that this will be a stronger effort than was its immediate predecessor. In fact, most of the songs, here, are superior to most of what is to be found on For Those About to Rock. Brian's vocals are in top form, and the guitar work is generally more interesting and well done than on FTAtR, and nowhere is this more apparent than on the title track, "Flick of the Switch," which is a raucous hard rocker with some bluesy hard rock soloing from Angus, driving rhythm from Malcolm, Cliff, and Phil.
Even less than amazing tracks, such as "Nervous Shakedown" are played with a good deal more energy than on the previous effort, and it shows. While the album was less successful, commercially, it is a superior performance in every aspect, with the exception that it doesn't have a clear "hit" to make it translate into album sales. If you want a bunch of songs you hear on the radio, you won't find 'em here. But, if you just want a rockin' good time, then this is a great addition to your AC/DC collection.
- This album is one of my favorites with Brian Johnson! This album is VERY underated!! "Landslide", "Guns For Hire", "Bedlam In Belgium", "Brainshake" and of coarse the title track!! This is what rock and roll is all about....I'm a self confessed AC/DC freak and highly recommend this album for any other AC/DC freaks!! I wish they would play some of these songs live...Long Live AC/DC!!

5 comments about Hemispheres.
- I think that Hemispheres is Rush's best 70s album, and definatly one of the best records thay ever made. Most people will say 2112 or Kings are better, because they are more recognizable/popular, however I disagree with that assesment. The title track is the finest extended song that band has ever written, the lyrics are really amazing when you read along to the music. It is far more substaintial and better crafted then 2112. Be prepared for a strange trip with Hemispheres, it is the most progressive work of Rush, which sadly would not be approached again after it's release and tour. Circumstances is a short, yet highly sophisticated rocker stuffed with time changes and exotic instruments employed. The Trees is another fan favorite that relies on Neil's fable like story telling to represent social unrest through the aspect of nature. And last but not least there is LaVillStragiato, a 9 minute instrumental which i think spotlights Alex's talent as one of the best guitarists on the planet. I like this instrumental much better then the far more popular YYZ.
Even though it only has 4 songs, this CD reward repeat listenings. Definate must buy, it is one of Rushes finest moments.
- This is when Rush got everything really together and still hadn't stopped for too much polishing. An amazing feat as Hemispheres takes you on a great journey through ancient wisdom, impeccable musicianship to perfection. A true rock classic!
- Four Songs. For GREAT Songs. For INCREDIBLY Great Songs.
You realize I could go on forever, right? Anyway, Every song on here is a success in every way. From the beutiful instrumentation of "La Villa Strangiato" to the incredible lyrics of "The Trees", this album is a masterpiece. All I can say is Buy It! You WILL NOT be sorry. I hope you guys enjoy it...
- As a follow up to Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres is everything it could possibly be. The two albums are linked not only by release dates and progressive creativity, but also by a light thematic link in the "Cygnus" saga. Musically, the boys are again at the top of their game with this release.
It is a testament to this album that it is the ONLY Rush album in their long career from which every song (yes, the entire album) was played on the supporting tour. (Only Moving Pictures eventually saw every song played live, but not on the supporting tour.)
For the songs:
HEMISPHERES: "Cygnus X-1, Book II". A fantastic album-side epic track. It is a coherent whole, both musically and lyrically, and yet is diverse enough to remain interesting throughout. The connection to "Cygnus" from Farewell is not particulary strong (both Books might have stood alone almost as effectively), but the connection is there and I suppose it does add a little to the saga. The song also has some of the most extensive and intense singing of any Rush epic -- lots of lyrics to be sung, and not much instrumental break for Geddy (perhaps one of the reasons it's not done live anymore -- would be quite a marathon to do night after night). In any event, an amazing prog-rock epic trak, and incredibly creative.
CIRCUMSTANCES: A tight little rocker, with some incredible riffs, especially just before each chorus. A bit of a mood change at the beginning of the instrumental section, which builds back up to the power of the song's opening.
TREES: A perennial favorite live, with a classical guitar opening, a nature setting instrumental section in the middle, and some driving rock sections in between. The meaning behind the lyrics has been debated, but the ironic twist at the end is clever regardless.
LA VILLA: Hands down, the best instrumental of all time. It is a multi-movement song that builds, retreats, and builds again through about 9 movements, some of which repeat later to create a chorus feel. Another song that has not grown old, and still makes a grand appearance on most tours.
This album also sees Geddy's last really high-pitched, wailing vocals (except for a brief moment in "Freewill" on the next album), and seems to mark the end of an era for Rush, as they really turn from their epic numbers over the next two albums, before abandoning them altogether. Fortunately, they end that chapter with this incredible album.
If there is one drawback to this album, the cover art is a little goofy. But hey, it's prog rock, and they were having fun.
5+ stars
- In the early days of high school I had to scrounge for tapes of albums, mainly because I didn't have a job, therefore no money. I had a friend record this album for me onto cassette and I wore that tape out. When I could I eventually bought a cd copy.
First let me say that beyond the sentimental value of this cd, that it's straight up, prog Rush at their very finest. First is the classic opus Hemispheres, artistically protraying the battle of the heart and mind, as represented by Dionysus and Apollo respectively, a quandry that is resolved by Cygnus, the bringer of balance. The lyrics and musicianship are incomparable, this is Rush at their very best. Next is Circumstances, a brooding track that I like very much. Then comes the classic "The Trees", a song which has lived a long life in concert performances and lastly "La Villa Strangiato", a phenomenal instrumental, featuring some sweet soloing by Alex Lifeson.
The music is somewhat dated by now, but it doesn't change the fact that it's an astounding prog rock classic. I'd say get this cd along with 2112 and you'll hear Rush at their absolute peak.

5 comments about Permanent Waves.
- I'm only 20 years old, but I've been a die-hard Rush fan ever since I was first exposed to them some 5-6 years ago. That being said, Permanent Waves is my favorite Rush album of them all. It has tracks that are great for the casual listener, some that are great for the blossoming Rush fan looking to get their first album, some that are great for the prog-rock enthusiast, and ALL that are great additions to anyone's music collection.
Any listener of Classic Rock radio will instantly recognize The Spirit Of Radio and Freewill. Two great radio-friendly tracks that are still proggy by Rush standards (check out the time changes in Freewill). Entre Nous is a very beautiful song, along with Different Strings. Jacob's Ladder is mostly instrumental and involves some more prog elements while combining good story-telling, but the album's biggest prog feature is Natural Science, a nearly 10-minute long track written in three parts that has beautiful melodies, challenging part writing, astounding lyrics, and just general great playing from all three members of the band.
Also, this album is at an interesting place in the guitar-synth-guitar timeline of Rush, as the album is definitely guitar-driven with just enough synths and keyboards to add that little bit of flavor and unique touch that only Rush can. Definitely used for icing more than substance.
I hesitate to say that this album is better than Moving Pictures, based on what the average musicophile will argue, but I will say that this album definitely has the characteristics of an incredible music experience.
- Permanent waves is Like an Old Friend. You can listen to it over and over and the relationship is always the same, you can fall back on it at any point even if it has been years and everything is right with the world!
Permanent Waves was released in 1980 and followed up the last of the true long suite progressive rock albums Hemispheres while also predating 1981's moving Pictures by one year. Hemispheres is also a modern rock classic but is quite different from Permanent Waves in a number of different ways. First of all the title track of Hemispheres is an entire side of the album like 1976's 2112. Permanent Waves does include a 9 plus minute tune in Natural Science but no instrumentals although sections of Natural Science are fairly long instrumental sections. I would also rank Natural Science as the best track on this great album though there are several excellent tracks here. Natural Science is very relevant today or in any era as our awareness of Climate Change and our "carbon footprint' are very relevant to the theme of Natural Science which discusses humankind's lack of awareness of our effect on the natural world and even hints of genetic engineering or other newer science technologies that we have not fully grasped before unleashing them on an unsuspecting world.
Entre Nous is one of the very few love songs ever penned by Peart, Lee and Lifeson and it is a great one. I am thrilled that they have been performing it live on the Snakes and Arrows tour and am hopeful they will continue to do so as I am slated to see them next month! Different Strings which follows Entre Nous is another excellent love song and is a true ballad, one of the few ever from the group that features some excellent guitar work by Alex Lifeson and it is a gem. I won't discuss Spirit of Radio or Free will because so many others have elaborated on them ad infinitum but I will mention the one clunker here and that would be Jacob's Ladder. This particular song smacks of filler and embodies virtually every cliche' that This Is Spinal Tap so effectively lampooned.
How can I rank an album 5 stars with one out of 6 songs being filler you ask? The remaining tracks are so superb that they overwhelmingly balance out the weak Jacob's Ladder. This one is in the top 5 of all Rush albums to date, highly recommended!
- Preordered this CD the minute I possibly could, and was not disappointed! I have all the other MoFi Rush CD's as well and another awesome product. Geddy's bass sounds more lifelike and that Ricky sound really comes through. Alex's guitars sound more spacious and up front, Neil's percussion is cleaner with a wider soundstage. Geddy's vocals also sound like he's in the room with you, the most lifelike I have ever heard. I would love it if MoFi also remastered Caress of Steel and A Farewell to Kings.
- When I first started seeing "Gold" CDs in the mid-80s I thought it was just another way to get me to pay more money for basically the same quality as aluminum-substrate CDs. In other words, I thought it was all...hype.
I even had a Tower Records employee tell me, "The only difference is that the gold doesn't oxidize as fast." (Given the intellectual level of the average Tower employee, that he used "oxidize" was impressive enough.) Which, while true, it also tells me that the guy had either never heard one of the discs or didn't have access to even mid-level audio equipment.
So I've been laboring under a 25+ yr delusion that Gold CDs were a marketing ploy.
Well, I've justed listened to Mobile Fidelity's "Permanent Waves", Special Limited Edition no. 3042. (I read somewhere that only 5000 are made, if so I got lucky since I almost passed it up.)
Not only was a I wrong, I was DEAD WRONG. I feel like such an idiot. I could have--SHOULD HAVE--all of MoFi's Rush editions. Now they are going for $100 and up (if nothing more than an investment!). The wife--sadly, like most women, a Rush-hater--ain't gonna go for dropping that kind of cash.
As for the sound quality I concur absolutely with many of the reviewers: this is simply the best sounding "Permanent Waves" I've ever heard, and I've owned FOUR previous editions (LP, Cassette, un-Remastered CD and Remastered ["The Rush Remasters"] CD) and this blows them ALL away.
The sound quality is breathtaking. I used the "STRAIGHT" setting on my Yahama HTR-6050 Receiver so that none of its decoders would alter the sound out-put from my Toshiba HD-A30 (yes, it's an HD-DVD player, it's also a d*mn good CDDA player). Only in concert (esp on this last tour) have these songs sounded better.
Geddy's bass: clean and punchy; sharp and fat at the same time (Rush fans should know exactly what I mean), something rarely fully captured on disc ("Power Windows," even pre-remastering, was an excellent example--and don't I wish I had that Mo-Fi version of that!).
Alex's guitar: Mr. Lifeson's guitar ranges from shimmering (the 12-string on "Natural Science"), to the emotive scream of "Spirit of Radio's" solo, to the measured, martial pace of the mid-section of "Jacob's Latter." (The last being the only Rush song ever called "beautiful" by a Rolling Stone reviewer--not that we Rush fans CARE what Rolling Stone thinks anyway.)
Neil's percussion: probably the most amazing thing about this disc is the complete fidelity to his "old" kit, with its plethora of percussive devices both familiar and bizarre.
The tympanis on "Jacob's Ladder", to give one example, reverberate so cleanly it was almost as if I could reach out and touch them. His snare snaps back with a wicked authority so many drummers aim for and so very, very few achieve.
The only better sounding disc I've ever heard are SACD's, e.g. Coltrane's "Lush Life" and Janine Jansen's "Four Seasons". Of course, even this disc doesn't equal an SACD, but it's closer than anything else.
I could write 10,000 words about this gem of a remastered disc. But Amazon only allows 1000 and I doubt most folks would want to read it.
For an album I've listened to on at least a weekly basis since 1983, if not daily, I was further surprised as how many "new" things I discovered from this single listen. (Needless to say, there'll be many more.) The opening tidal pools of "Natural Science" to the closing crash of the in-coming tide reminded me so much of La Jolla Shores it was eerie.
Hugh Syme's piano work on "Different Strings" is also beautifully rendered. I don't know if he was playing a Steinway grand--it certainly sounded like it. Whatever it was, few of my "classical" piano CDs sound this pure. The fidelity is so good that at the end of this track I can hear what I believe Alex's pick tapping a pick-up. It's THAT good.
If you're a Rush fan and an audiophile (and aren't the two really synonyms?), you simply MUST have this disc.
Let's hope this disc sells enough copies to warrant yet more Rush albums from MoFi's Magical Mixing Laboratory. They deserve it--and so do we.
I only hope that more Rush CDs are coming from MoFi's Magic Mixing Laboratory.
The cover art also wasn't quite what I expected. It looked like it was done with a low-end HP copier/scanner. I think we deserve better for the $26.99 paid. Hopefully, future Rush releases (if there are any) will correct this flaw. The only flaw in the release.
Finally, HUGE props to Shawn R. Britton (of MoFi) who did the remastering job.
- Ultra Magnus obviously knows nothing about Mobile Fidelity or fine recordings in general. The sound is superb and Rush definitely got their cut from the licensing process that MoFi goes through. What an ignoramus!!

- I wasn't expecting much out of this album and I am a huge AC/DC fan. I have to say: this album f'n rocks!!! There isn't a bad song on it and its definetly better than the previous two studio albums prior to this album: Flick of the Switch and For Those About to Rock. Definetly in my top three favorite AC/DC albums, and I have them all. This album is a must-have for any true fan!
- This album is a great album! A lot of people don't really like this album but who cares??!! There's a lot of great AC/DC classics on this album like: "Shake Your Foundations", "Sink the Pink", "Playing with Girls", "Hell or High Water" and the underrated "Danger".. If you like the Thunder from Down Under before, the you should like this album!! After all, every AC/DC album rocks!!!
- AC/DC is one of best Heavy Metal bands of all time.
They never sold out to radio or anybody else.
This album is no exception with "SINK THE PINK".
I would rate this album at a 8 from 1to10!!
- as other reviewers have stated this isn't ac/dc's best album BUT it still rocks hard and is good and consistent and still worth the purchase and even though it gets weak in spots it still has its gems like danger, sink the pink and shake your foundations.basically if what your looking for is good raw no nonsense rock then this is the album for you.
- I forgot how great this album really is. This is just good, hard rock. Shake Your Foundations is one of AC/DC's all time best. There isn't a bad song on the album. Fly on the Wall is one of the band's more underappreciated albums. Do yourself a favor and buy it today!.

- Hey! I love "Hot Dog." It is a fun song. Sometimes all a good song needs to be is fun. I'm sure that was what they were thinking. And Zep never padded the albums with filler. As far as the rest goes...the times were changing and so were Jimmy and company. I'll meet you half way and say a three star for a Zep album and a four star to anything else released by another artist that year. Final thought: Jimmy was out of it and every band needs to evolve and try something different. I will never forget the weird water color album sleeve. What was that all about?
- Holy Crap I've been getting into LZ alot lately...You know I was to young when they were at there peak and grew up in a Beatles/GratefulDead Family..Just recently bought the box set and The first 7 albums are all great minus some eh songs on Presence. But I threw this on and I almosted puked! Thats all I have to say, Don't buy unless you need every Zepp Album. : )
- Zep went soft and sappy for their studio finale. "In the Evening" and ""Im Gonna Crawl" are okay, but the rest...blech!
- English hard rockers Led Zeppelin released their eighth and final studio album In Through the Out Door in August of 1979.
The album was the band's first album in over THREE YEARS (which, by 1979 standards, was a long wait) since the March, 1976 release of the chart-topping Presence.
Alot happened in the three years, disco became huge whilst punk and new wave were happening underground and arena rock and hard rock/metal bands like KISS, Foreigner, Styx and Ted Nugent were keeping rock alive in the mainstream here in the States. In Zeppelin land, tragedies struck in 1977. First, manager Peter Grant was going through a divorce. Guitarist Jimmy Page began having drug problems. Then in July, Grant, drummer John Bonham and two other members of Zep's entourage were arrested for beating a security officer. Then, lead singer Robert Plant's young son Karac had died suddenly from a stomach infection therefore curtailing Zep's US tour.
The band went into an uncertain period where Page and Bonham were dealing with demons and Plant was still grieving whilst bass player John Paul Jones (who was unscathed in the disasters) retired to his family. Then, the band went to Sweden in November, 1978 to start work on ITTOD which would be the last album Zep would release as an active band. For the album, a revitalized Plant (whom was about to become a dad again as son Logan would be born during ITTOD's mixing sessions in January of 1979) and Jones were the album's musical forces while Page did co-write many of the songs and produced the album despite his heroin troubles and Bonham played well considering his alcohol intake. Would this album be another Zep classic or would it be a dud, read on and find out (as I did when I first got this album on cassette in November of 1985 when I was 9).
All of the tracks were penned by Page/Plant/Jones except as noted.
The opening "In The Evening" is a killer opener. Droning synthesizers, violin bowed guitars and tympani's start this track. After the intro, it becomes a classic rocker, featuring some fine guitar work by Page and Bonzo's killer drumming. Next is "South Bound Suarez", a bluesy shuffle rocker with some great piano work from Jonesy. Next is the album's US Top 30 hit "Fool In The Rain". This track got the most airplay on rock radio when released and the band used Caribbean flavorings in this track's middle section to a great extent. The first side ended with the English doing a classic original hoedown track called "Hot Dog" written by Page and Plant. Page's country-ish picking riff and Plant's Elvis-type vocal delivery make this track a standout.
The album's second side kicked off with the almost 11 minute epic Carouselambra. Jonesy's synthesizer intro morphs into a fall out rocker with some great guitar playing by Pagey (he used his Gibson doubleneck on this track). The track rocks out then slows a bit then picks up the pace and the song is just stellar. The next track is "All My Love" (written by Jones and Plant). Plant wrote the song after his first son Karac's death and was a great tribute to him. Jonesy's keyboards on the track were superb and Page's guitar work here is beautiful. The closing "I'm Gonna Crawl" is a great album closer. The synthesizer intro is beautiful before turning into a classic blues featuring great bluesy vocals from Plant, and some marvelous interplay between the bass guitar and drums. Page's guitar solo is blues at its finest. The song ends with some passioned singing and screaming from Plant and the crescendo to the end was amazing.
When ITTOD was finally released (with a paper bag concealing one of the six different album sleeves), disco was on its way out and New Wave went back underground (for awhile) as the album became the first album in history for a ROCK BAND to debut at #1 on Billboard's Album Charts in late August of 1979 and stayed for eight weeks and sold a stellar 3 million copies in its first five days according to Atlantic Records (the band's US distributor). To date it has sold 7 million Stateside.
Sadly, this was the band's last album as drummer John Bonham died in September of 1980 after a night of heavy drinking and the band broke up after his death as his drumming was irreplaceable.
