5 comments about The Slip.

  1. I should start off by saying I've never been the biggest NIN fan. I've heard a decent amount of their music, and I've always liked them but they just never stuck with me. With Teeth seemed a bit like the sellout point to me, and I didn't pay attention to them for awhile. When I heard The Slip was free on their site, I eagerly downloaded it, and I've gotta say it's absolutely AMAZING! With the exception of Corona Radiata (which I'm sure will grow on me soon), there is not a dull moment with The Slip, and I plan to order Ghosts I-IV ASAFP.

Update: I forgot how depressing NIN is. Listening to it makes me feel like bashing my skull in, but it's such amazing music that I CAN'T TURN IT OFF! Also, With Teeth doesn't seem as bad now.

  2. This album is really cool, I just wish it was a bit longer, and without so many instrumentals, but honestly I think this album would've been superior to both With Teeth and Year Zero if it was the average NIN length album. The intro 999,999 is a really cool sounding intro, typical of NIN albums. 1,000,000 is a very drum-centered song, and the chorus is just incredibly melodic. Getting Away is an anti George Bush song, I believe, with the chorus, "And we are letting you get away, and we are letting you get away, with it", I just get a complete feeling that he is talking about "Dubbya", very cool industrial beat to this one. Discipline is a song which I completely relate to as a person who has been addicted to drugs or alcohol, it is about trying hard to stay clean, but knowing the possibility of relapse, and how you will act once you relapse. This song is very radio-friendly, but do not let that ruin the fact that it is an awesome song, kind of sounds like Fragile-era NIN, which I absolutely loved. Echoplex is also another Fragile-era NIN sounding song, I absolutely love this song, definitely one of my favorites from this album, the lyrics are incredible. Head Down is a very noisy/industrial beat with an undeniably melodic chorus, the beat to this song is really fu**ing cool, I love it. Lights In The Sky is a very, very slow song, with only Trents voice and a piano, not really my favorite song at all, but many people may love it. Corona Radiata and The Four Of Us Are Dying are both instrumentals and very cool ones at that, they are very hallucinagenic and if you like hallucinogens, these would be cool tracks to throw on while experiencing that. Demon Seed is the final track on the album and has a really cool beat, the music sounds like Downward Spiral-era NIN, really cool closer! The vocals are kind of in the background to the beat in about half of this song, this track may take a few listens, but it is awesome. Overall, this is a really solid NIN release, and I do not think it will disappoint hardcore NIN fans at all, and even newcomers to NIN will probably really like this one. Pick it up or download it for free at NIN's website, and support this cool band, and really cool dude Trent Reznor! Trent is one of the most influential and original artists of all time, he is the reason that other forms of rock started infusing industrial elements into their music!

  3. If you haven't picked up this album yet, then shame on you. Not only has Trent delivered free music to his millions of minions, but he offers this limited-print version to the die-hard fans who simply can't live without a manufactured copy of his terrific work(i.e. myself).
As with all his music, his beautiful melodies melt together with angst-filled rhythms perfectly. He has delivered yet another timeless ballad, 'Lights in the Sky', as well as the lyrical masterpiece, 'Echoplex.' Along with these, though, there is the industrial genius we all know and love, expressing his frustrations through songs like 'Letting You' and 'Demon Seed.'
I, personally, love the album and thank Trent for producing an official hard-copy release. I was also extremely excited to see the reunion of Trent and Robyn. Even if you have a 5mbps connection, it's worth the free download. However, I would recommend buying the hard-copy to support the amazing work he has produced.

  4. I'm one of those who are true fans of Nine Inch Nails. I collect their albums since 1992's EP "Broken" until the latest 2008's "The Slip". For the audio CD, Trent Reznor still performs his brilliant skills on composing this record. The mood of this album starts with dim and mysterious atmosphere on "999,999" by letting the synthesized sounds treat your emotion. Then, the real show commences with the songs "1,000,000" with the heavy beating drums' line and heavy distortion guitar. Some of you may feel that this song sounds like "March of the Pigs" from their 1994 album "The Downward Spiral". The mood continues with "Letting You", "Discipline", "Echoplex" (one of my favorite tracks on this record), and "Head Down" (my another favorite track). Since your mood climb up to the highest point, it will descend down to the calmest emotion when you listen to the tracks "Lights in the Sky", "Corona Radiata", and "The Four of Us Are Dying". Finally, just finish the show of Slip with the song "Demon Seed" by listening to their heavy-distortion guitar and heavy drums.
For the limited edition, the rehearsal performance DVD of 5 songs are in really good quality and high resolution (1,000,000, "Letting You", "Discipline", "Echoplex", and "Head Down").

If you are looking for electronic-rock band, Nine Inch Nails is definitely recommended.

  5. This album is free. Which is awesome. But it sounds free too. The lyrics to discipline" are very fitting for trents life, which I can relate to as well, but most of the album sounds just waaay too comercialized and overdone. He uses simple lyrics and its just not that impressive. The four of us are dying impressed me a bit. But i would NOT buy this album. If you must, download it for free

  1. This is what American music is...carved from her island style and fused with her street savvy, this album shines with everything Lauryn Hill was and is, and what she represents is an undying, unyielding spirit which recognizes the best and the worst of society and turns it into something to which everyone can relate. With funky beats and sweet, sweet melodies!

  2. this album is wack the only 2 songs on here i like is

    1 nothing even matters
2 ex factory but other then that i was so diappointed when i bought this album 8 years ago i was salty this is the worse album i ever bought in my life besides whats the 411 by mary j blige

  3. after a decade it's still one of my favorites. i love every track on here, especially zion. i should probably buy a new one, since the one i have is scratched up, but it still plays pretty good. she really taught the lessons of being in love, being a woman and a mother.

  4. I bought this album when it first came out and listened to it like crazy. I remember her singing "Zion" at the grammys and crying it was so beautiful. I say it's bittersweet because obviously it's about love and heartache and breakup's and makeups. But also because this was her only ablum for a few years until she came out with that Unplugged album which was even more deep and dark and sad, but great. I love her music , you can tell what she's going through with every track. All around great investment.

  5. Even after a decade this album still sounds sooo much better than most anything else out right now. I don't think I'll ever get tired of hearing this album over and over. I was introduced to it as a middle school kid, I rediscovered it a few months ago and just can't believe how fresh and deep it still sounds.

  1. All I can say is, wow. This is a phenomenal record and you're really missing out if you skip it. The last 3 songs alone are worth it even if "knocked up" doesn't put you in a trance; it's dang near hypnotic for me. Great stuff!!

  2. Kings of Leon is a great, young, energetic band. They caught my attention with the first single On Call, which I find quite irresistible. The music on Because Of The Times has traces of artists such as Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Doors, but most importantly, Kings Of Leon have created a rather unique sound of their own.

  3. The album plays with the your ear drums from the start. There are too many good things to say, so I will keep this very very short. I have been passionate about music my entire life. I even worked in the business for 4 years. I have had very few occurences where I was so swept away by the originality of an album. The Kings of Leon are not using wild new instruments, like homemade 3-string basses, but they are breaking rules. They are quickly moving into a class all by themselves, and their popularity (or lack thereof) in the United States shows how original they are.

  4. I have listened to this album more than any other in the last year, that speaks for itself.

  5. I really enjoyed the music on this Lp..but, the whole reason for purchasing an Lp was for better sonics... which, on this "red" colored album, are horrible...the background noise drowns out any low level music...A "re-issue" should be done for customers who have recieved the bad vinyl...Rick

  1. I love this band, and I enjoy this album, but, like other reviewers, I don't think it's as good as the first two... Still, it's definitely worth a buy.

  2. This album is just simply boring for most of the tracks. The songs are mostly just too soft. The album starts off with promise after the intro with Given Up, which is a really hard-rocking angst-filled track that I really like. Bleed It Out is a really cool song, and one of the only ones with Shinoda, sounds like Linkin Park from previous albums. Shadow Of The Day is a complete U2 rip-off, but overall is a pretty decent track. What Ive Done is a pretty typical LP ballad track, and the lyrics are great, I definitely like this one. Hands Held High is an anti-Bush song, wow really groundbreaking right, and it is not that good at all. No More Sorrow is another anti-Bush song, but this one is really cool, it is one of the few hard-rocking tracks on the album, the last good song on the album. The ones I didn't mention and the songs after No More Sorrow are all really slow, boring, and absolutely horrible. Overall this album is not very good at all, a true disappointment for Linkin Park, in my and most others opinion!

  3. The newest album fron Linkin Park titled "Minutes to Midnight" sure is a lot different than "Hybrid Theory" and "Meteora", but I still liked it. It is probably the weakest of their albums, but it does have some very good songs on here.

    1. Wake - Just an intro, doesn't need a rating.

    2. Given Up - 5/5. The one song on the album that sounds the most like their older music. Really good.

    3. Leave Out All The Rest - 5/5. In my opinion, the second best song on the album.

    4. Bleed It Out - 3/5. I never could get into this song that much. In my opinion, Mike Shinoda's parts in the song are the only good parts. Chester's parts are just ok.

    5. Shadow of the Day 5/5. In my opinion, the best song on the album. I could listen to it over and over.

    6. What I've Done - 4/5. Great song, but is a little old now.

    7. Hands Held High - 1/5. The worst song from Linkin Park in my opinion. I always skip this one.

    8. No More Sorrow - 5/5. Another great song on this album.

    9. Valentines Day - 3/10. The only good part of this song is the second half. Not a huge fan of the first half.

    10. In Between - 2.5/5. It's ok, but not great.

    11. In Pieces 3.5/5 - Alright song.

    12. The Little Things That Give You Away - 2/5. I wasn't crazy about this song either.

So overall, I give this album 4 stars.

  4. I fully appreciate all the songs, not just the ones they played on the radio.

  5. After listening to the most recent Linkin Park album, it certainly is different. It's got some of the hard rock elements from their Nu-Metal days, and it's got a surprising amount of softer songs (which I really enjoyed but many fans will probably be disappointed). So here's my overall review:

"Wake" is a cool intro, it's a lot different than what Linkin Park has done to start their other 3 albums. Starting with crackling sounds like an old vinyl record playing, numerous other sounds come in and build-up as eventually the band's instruments come to life to get the album going.

"Given Up" has some great pieces of hard rock which I like, but I think the intro clapping-like sounds are stupid and I HATE the cursing. I always thought Linkin Park was a cool group for not needing to curse to have some powerful songs, and they just threw that out the window on this song. The latter half of Given Up is VERY loud and angry which I know a lot of people will like it, but I don't. I'm not emo enough to listen to that part of the song in public.

"Leave Out All The Rest" is a GREAT song, I love it! It's a softer song along the lines of "My December" (it sounds totally different, but it's the same kind of easy-going song), and I found myself reminiscing about my past when listening to this song. I hope this song gets a lot of radio play as this shows some of Chester's great vocal ability. The song reminds me a lot of Saliva's "Rest In Pieces" song.

"Bleed It Out" made me think of a country ho-down when it started (it's got clapping and a lot of people in the background hootin' and hollering). Bleed It Out also marks Mike's first appearance on the album and I'm not sure what genre this song would go into. It's got Mike rapping (kind of) and Chester doing his thing, lots of clapping in the background, and it's a fast paced song (and short too, only about two and half minutes).

"Shadow of The Day" is another slower song, and very different from anything Linkin Park has done before. Chester goes solo on this song as well. It starts out with low tone beats and fills out with some violin and electronic sounds, later on the drums come in. I really like this song too, but if I came across it on the radio I wouldn't have thought it was Linkin Park, so many fans might not like it. It reminds me of a band called Audio Adrenaline. This is one of the longest songs on the album clocking in at 5 minutes.

"What I've Done" everyone already knows about. Another song I like! And many people will like it since it sounds the most like Linkin Park's previous albums out of the rest of the new songs.

"Hands Held High" is song number 2 with Mike (3 if you count his background on What I've Done), more unneeded cursing, starts with some church-like organ, drummer boy percussion, and features background chorus from non-Linkin Park singers. Mike puts out some nice lyrical work here, and Chester comes in at the halfway point. This is a VERY POLITICAL song, which is critical of many of the things going on involving the United States in various places in the world. Cut the cursing and I believe this would be a more powerful song. This song didn't work for me though, felt too much like a song that could have been done by the Beatles or U2 just based on the song's melody.

"No More Sorrow" is a hard rock song with Chester doing his thing. I haven't soaked up the lyrics yet so I can't really say what it's about, but Linkin Park is angry about people with money (maybe another song bashing President Bush?). I was surprised by how abruptly it ended, it just stopped. Another Mike Shinoda drought on this song (I didn't hear a peep out of him), but other than that, its definitely my favorite song on the album since it reminds me why I became a Linkin Park fan to begin with.

"Valentine's Day" is another softer song, not surprising based on the title alone. People listening to this song will probably be able to name a dozen bands that sound just like this, not to say it's not a good song, but it does sound familiar. I do like the song and the second half is really good when it kicks into higher gear.

"In Between" is Mike's biggest song, and it's the first time he's ever just sung lyrics; there's no hip-hop coming from Mike on this song, it's just him out there singing. This is a softer song as well and it's very melodic. I like this song too, but again, it could easily be mistaken for a non-Linkin Park song, and unfortunately it's somewhat repetitive and easy to forget which part of the song you're at.

"In Pieces" reminds me of Reanimation a bit, it's got lots of sound effects and about three quarters of the way through the song guitars will come out in full force (similar to the slow build ups in Reanimation), and is another Chester-only song. This is a good song and is very active and it sounds like it has a guest singer behind Chester but I don't know who. This song had another abrupt ending.

"The Little Things Give You Away" has a very soft-singing Chester start things off. Things build up consistently throughout the song and there is another big guitar piece here. This is also VERY political based on the lyrics, mainly influenced by the events in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. This is the longest song Linkin Park has ever done on an album clocking in at 6 minutes 25 seconds, and Mike is mostly absent from it until the second half. The tone and lyrics don't work with Chester though, it feels more like a song that should have given to perform by a diva. Final song of the CD.

Well, Linkin Park did accomplish one thing they laid out, and that's to totally change their sound. This is, for the most part, nothing like Hybrid Theory, Reanimation, or Meteora. It'll be easy to spot these songs on the radio based solely on Chester's voice, but aside from that these are quite different from previous songs. There are songs here which are hard rock for the Nu-Metal LP fans out there, and there are lots of songs for people, like me, who have always enjoying LP's lighter and more lyrics songs like "My December" and "Numb". I really like "Shadow Of The Day", it's just a very enjoyable song and the sound is smooth with some great lyrical work from Chester.

I've only listened to the album about a half dozen times through and I'm still soaking up the meaning of the songs, and perhaps I've missed Mike's contributions on some songs, but I was still surprised by how little he seems to appear. On the previous albums I always enjoyed how LP mixed opposites, they'd have hard rock pieces with Chester and the hip hop element with Mike, I thought that formula worked. On this album however it's hard to guess where'd Mike will come in and what Chester will do. I guess you could say it's a more seamless sound in the songs. Also, I imagine Joe Hahn must have been bored out of his mind at times, there are very few instances of his trademark turntable work ("What I've Done" would seem to be his biggest song), but I'm sure he did lots of the artwork and that he'll be in charge of Linkin Park's music videos for this album as well.

One thing I was expecting based solely on the title was a kind of story being told throughout the album. When I heard the title would be Minutes to Midnight I thought it might be a build up to a huge song at the end, with a common meaning linking all of the songs together. But that's not present, and even though the last song is the biggest, there isn't a noticeable theme to the album. Three of the songs do have political contexts which are decidedly critical of the Bush administration, and while the members of Linkin Park are entitled to their opinion, I don't appreciate artists trying to shove a political statement in my face. I want to be able to just listen to a song and enjoy it, not to hear political propaganda. Besides, when the United States' involvement in Iraq is wrapped up (and when President Bush leaves office), those 3 political songs will lose their relevance and eventually people will begin to forget their meaning.

All-in-all this is an okay album with some enjoyable songs, and even though it's very different from previous efforts I'm sure real Linkin Park fans will come to love it while alienating other fans of the band at the same time. I hated Reanimation when I first listened to it, but it really grew on me and I think that's what might happen with Linkin Park fans when they first listen to Minutes to Midnight.

  1. I bought the album, threw it into my car cd player and haven't stopped playing it yet - it's on permanent rotation! There isn't a bad song on the album. The lyrics this band writes, as promised, are great and the instruments back them up. Wow! Can't wait to get all their albums now. Heavy, fun, thoughtful, what metal should be in 2008.

  2. I love this CD, every track is great. There are no crappy tunes on this one!

  3. I'm sure that there are lots of people to whom most or all of the songs will appeal to them, but for me, just like their last 5 albums (including Disclaimer II), I have always found that I only really like about half the songs on the album and the others I can do without. If you prefer it when a singer screams lyrics more than sings them, then this album is probably ok for you as it's a little heavy in that respect. If you prefer hard rockin' melodies that stand out one from another, perhaps not so much.

  4. Seether went a little dark there for a while, but their back. Awesome listening.Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces

  5. This was the first Seether CD that I purchased. I have rocked out to many of their other tunes and decided it was time to buy. I was not dissapointed at all! I listen to it everyday!

  1. I must admit that I am NOT a fan of Sigur Rós! I lived in Iceland when the concert in Reykjavik went off and I was bored. Some may say I was negligant - but that was just the way it was at that time.
Then I was recommended this DVD. I was very sceptical at first and it took me a long time to get my hands on it.
Reluctantly I put it on - and was blown away.
This "movie" is simply amazing. It is photographed in an amazingly beautiful way and SR's soundtrack is absolutely perfect.
The landscapes of Iceland filmed in a special blue hue is just captivatving and it stresses the mood of the film, the country, the stories and... everything Iceland!
I am so please having bought this DVD and it is a great supplement to "Screaming Masterpiece" - which btw was the movie that made me interested in SR beyond the hype.
"Heima" and "Screaming Masterpiece" are highly recommended!

  2. Wlasnie obejrzalem Dvd 'Heima'. Wystepy zespolu sa tu zgrabnie wplecione pomiedzy lokalne krajobazy (prywatny pokoj goscinny, protestowana zapora wodna, zapomniana przetwornia ryb, otwarte i klubowe sceny Reykiaviku), oraz krotkie wypowiedzi czlonkow zespolu.
Drugi krazek (150 min) jest zlepkiem zdjec koncertowych (czesc powtarza sie z pierwszego Dvd), i mozna sobie go odpuscic. Jednakze polecam pierwsza czesc 'Heima', chocby ze wzgledu na niechybna uczte wizualnych emocji.

  3. I take that back: a must watch, period! This music DVD contains 2 discs with material recorded during the band's 2006 homecoming tour through Iceland. Particularly special about it are the intimate (at times, unplugged) performances the band did for their fellow countrymen and women for free. Complementing these are some incredibly powerful (as in LOUD, get-off-your-seat-for-once) performances from their first four albums that are bound to have you give them all the respect they've earned as one of the best musical acts in the world today.

The first disc is peppered with interviews that give you an insider's view of the band and how they work together, their feelings about home and stardom and life at large. The second disc contains the complete performances without commentary, so you can focus on enjoying the music alone. Either way you look at it, you cannot pass this one.

  4. This documentary is a beautiful and magnificent exposition of the band, Sigur Rós, their exquisite music, and the awe-inspiring land that birthed them. I enjoyed every minute of this and literally had my breath taken by some the imagery. Worth it? Yes.

  5. Beautiful live dvd
If you are a fan of Sigur Ros or Iceland you will love this one.

  1. Like most folks, I've taken to picking up a track or two from each release. After hearing a couple of Carll's tracks I bought the plastic. So great, I picked up the plastic on his previous album "Little Rock" just a week later. This is what country should be. Fans of Bobby Bare Jr will find a lot to like in Carll's songs.

  2. Just picked this up after listening to its recommendation from the music guru on CBS Sunday Morning -- and it delivers!

  3. "You be the sinner, I'll be the sin"

Are you kidding me? This man is a genius! His way with words is amazing!

Musically, this is a very typical country sound, with the twang, rhythms and instruments used in the genre. But it's the words that make this an outstanding listen.

  4. Once again, I have used CBS sunday morning tv show as a recommendation for music. it is just so so, nothing really sticks out to recommend the CD, lasted less than 3 days in the truck.

  5. I heard Hayes Carll on XMRadio twice and bought the CD - it's outstanding. I saw him in Tampa recently and he is funny, sincere and very talented. Buy and enjoy!!

5 comments about System of a Down.

  1. 3 1/2

A solid attack sucker punch of flavored, offbeat hardcore came with the Armenian-american groups debut combining relentless hostility, eccentrically powerful vocals, melodic transcendence, and a dash of old-world flavor to boot. It's no wonder the band immediately stood out in a genre all but known for it's generic torment. Not all of the album works properly; the songs eventually tend to bleed together, at worst into a type of pummeling oddball metal gimmickry, but a distinct mark upon their craft hinted at an important career to come.

  2. In the age of the new millenium, there were many metal bands whose metal was extremely downcast and anarchistic, but very few of them really distinguished themselves. System of a Down was one band than set themselves apart from the crowd--they clearly had a political leftist fury, but they had a sense of humor too.

"Sugar," System of a Down's first single, was just plain weird. It alternates between a swing drum beat and a heavy guitar burst, and Serj is singing about oppression, but in quirky monologues about kicking his girl in the "Ooh! Baby! She's okay!" I have to admit that I really passed this single off as a cheesy 90s comedy song, but gradually I loved listening to them.

System of a Down has a Middle Eastern-style to them as well, with very characteristic chord progressions. The guitarists were incredible for making heavy metal sound far different than it ever sounded.

Whether Serj is yelping weird lyrics in "Ddevil" or screaming in "Suite-Pee," he really showed that metal had so many dimensions. In "P.L.U.C.K." Serj Tankian shows off his maddening anger at genocide, screaming "Die! Why?!? Walk Down! Walk Down!".

And the drummer really knows how to set the band in different beat rhythms, sometimes playing in a seven beat rhythm, then switching back to four beats. He sure knows how to slide in those speedy drum rolls and offbeat rhythms.

This debut shows that System of a Down clearly makes a half-anarchist, half-hilarious lineup of songs so entertaining. Clearly System of a Down is going to be remembered for being one the craziest, but most eclectic metal bands around.

  3. I love this cd, everyone of the songs are hard and demented. It is definatly explicit but it has the hit song sugar and my favorite song ever P.L.U.C.K (Political Lying Unholy Cowardly Killers). If you like System of a Down or rock in general this cd is a must!!!!!!!!!!

  4. It is sort of a shame that this band was for so long grouped into the nu-metal genre. There are some major differences between these guys and nu-metal bands... the main thing being talent...
It took me a while to understand this band. I'm not sure why, but I just didn't really catch onto this CD for a long time. I owned it too, but it was Toxicity, the bands second album that really grabbed my attention initially. After I got into that second one, I soon realized that this album was great in so many ways, that Toxicity isn't.
While SYSTEM has a slew of bizarre style, I think that it is the first one that really goes all out with insane screwball antics. The debut album is a lot more lighthearted throughout than on the second album, almost cartoonish at points, but still manages to squeeze a good amount of deepness in there... this is all gravy though, for any listener. Theres a good vibe that swings from one side of you to the next pretty rapidly at times.
I don't understand these days why I overlooked this album for as long as I did. It's loud and it's fun. Nobodys bitching like so many of the nu-metal acts do/did. I look at System of a Down as an alternative to modern mainstream metal. But it's easier for many to tolerate than most underground metal. The songs are mostly about punk song length (short)... but they come at you fast, one after another, and never seem to get stale. On the other hand you may have to adjust your head settings to appreciate this style, but once you get into the groove, each song is better than the one before it... so the album gets better and better.... and is still to this day as unique as ever.

  5. This album is freaking amazing, full of songs that are both Socially and Politacaly concious(Sugar, CUBErt, P.L.U.C.K) To just all around goofiness(Suite-Pee, ddevil). My only complaint is the over use of the f-word. I love this band, and I don't mind swearing, but they relied way to much on swearing to display anger in this album.

  1. -Top Songs-
    5: Gone Forever
    4: Riot
    3: It's All Over
    2: Never Too Late
    1: Animal I Have Become

    -Filler-

    3: Over And Over
    2: Let It Die
    1: On My Own

Guys, believe me, if there is one reason to buy this cd, buy for the top, not 'Pain', the so-called 'hit'.

  2. good hard rock cd. if you like 12 stones, breaking benjamin, saliva you'll probably like this cd

  3. This is a very good cd. I listen to it all the time. I highly recommend it to everyone.

  4. Three Days Grace's sophomore effort "One-X" is not only the best rock CD of 2006, but my personal favorite of all time. Every song has a grungy hard rock tone to it, even the slow ones. The CD shines on every song, the first 4 being the best on the record. Until their third one in 09, this is the greatest CD ever, next to Breaking Benjamin's Phobia, Buckcherry's 15, and some classics like AC/DC or Aerosmith or Guns 'N' Roses.

  5. This is one of those CD's where the sample tracks are better then the actual songs cause they sure fooled me. Listening to the samples here on Amazon I thought to myself "wow, these guys sound great, I have to get their album."

Never buy an album based upon sample tracks alone or you'll end up with something like this. Oh don't get me wrong, some of the songs are pretty good, but for the most part it's just a bunch of Gothic punk "rockers" singing about how selfish they are and how much life sucks. Look, I can appreciate songs about pain, we all suffer every now and then, but this CD goes over the top so bad that I was rolling my eyes more then anything else. At least a third of the songs are about pain and suffering and how much life sucks and blah blah blah, let's go cut ourselves. It's just too much. A few songs would be more then fine with me, but almost the whole album? And its done with so little feeling and emotion that I couldn't help but wonder if they were really singing from the heart or just playing what they think we want to hear.

It isn't all bad though. Some songs, like the opener "Its All Over" and "Never Too Late" rescue this album from the being completely worthless and give it at least enough life to warrant a two star rating. Three Days Grace does have a great vocalist, but their sound isn't as great as many other bands I've heard. Its rather bland overall.

So just skip X-One; it's nothing special and isn't worth your time or money. You may enjoy a few of the songs, but for the most part, unless you like angst punk rockers singing about how awful their lives are, you'll probably be bored through most of the tracks; at least I was.

  1. I first listened to this disc years ago. I have always liked the sound of this music and her voice. It is a great disc in my opinion. I cant really explain it completely but I just like this music. Thats all I have to say.

  2. Im afraid evanescence will never be able to produce such a masterpiece again. This cd is so good! lyrics songs, her voice... wow.
i love evanescence and this is definitely their best work of art!

  3. It's interesting that many of the criticism of this album come down to "This band isn't REAL metal" ...for REAL metal search out Pantera/Slayer/Cradle of Filth (insert name of band with screaming male lead). Okay, if what you like is bands with a screaming male lead, you *probably* won't like Evanescence, I'll give you that. Other criticisms? "They aren't *real* goth, for *real* goth check out Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation, etc." like it's a competition to be *more gothic* or something (and FYI I love Within Temptation and Lacuna Coil, Nightwish is okay, I like a few songs). Other criticisms include "Evanescence sucks live" when I doubt anyone who hates the band obviously this much would shell out $70 to see them live (I've seen them live, and they were amazing). Anyways, Amy Lee is extremely talented (check out youtube videos of her singing a duet in high school if you think her voice is machine generated, or "Listen to the Rain" a song she wrote for her high school choir if you don't believe she can write songs). She has *that* voice - the one that gives you chills and makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up. The only person that comes to mind easily whose also had *that voice* was Karen Carpenter (although gotta say no one in popular music can ever equal the late KC). I will accept this: a lot of their songs sound the same. Yeah, and maybe the lyrics aren't super-deep, but c'mon they're songs. 95% of popular songs say things like "baby, I love you, oh baby" (I have heard a few songwriters who do have deep or clever lyrics, such as Dar Williams or Amanda Palmer of The Dresden Dolls, but those songwriters are VERY few and far between). Plus, some of the material on this album - such as "My Immortal" she wrote when she was only about 18 - pretty talented for an 18 year old!! Personally, this is one of my all-time favorite CDs. I bought this when it first came out, and I still listen to it very often. Basically, it can be described in one word: beautiful.

  4. I love this CD. I love Amy Lee's beautiful voice in this rock band. The songs are just amazing and really evoke emotion in the listener.

  5. The first song by Evanescence that I ever heard was My Immortal, and by the end of that song, I was in love with this band. They had come up with such a unique, beautiful, and haunting sound that I had never had the pleasure of hearing before, and I still have yet to find a band that can even come close to matching what Evanescence has brought into this world.

Now four years ago, when I first became a fan of Evanescence, I was not at all into the whole goth scene because it really creeped me out. However, you definitely don't have to be a goth to appreciate this music. Everybody needs a little bit of darker-sounding music to listen to once in a while. So since that fateful day back in 2004, Evanescence has become my very favorite band, and I have been obtaining whatever music of theirs I can, including The Open Door, Origin, the EPs, and just about every other demo they ever recorded. But out of everything Evanescence has released, Fallen is still my favorite album. Don't get me wrong, I highly recommend The Open Door as well, because the music from it is WONDERFUL, but it just doesn't seem to have that same special element that Fallen has. It's almost as if there's some highly addictive chemical in this CD, where you can listen to it a hundred times in a week and still be left craving more of that same...stuff. I don't know how else to explain it, but I'm sure that anyone else who has heard this album will agree with me.

Okay, this has already been long, but I wanted to let whoever cares know that I am a Christian, and I feel that I should give my fellow Christians a heads-up on what to expect from this album as far as lyrics. Well, here goes:

Going Under- This song is just about how Lee wants to get out of a presumably abusive relationship with another person, and she won't let this person drag her under anymore.
"...So go on and scream, scream at me/I'm so far away/I won't be broken again/I've got to breathe/I can't keep going under..."

Bring Me to Life- Lee has said that she wrote this song about a long-time friend, but it could be interpreted as a plea to God as well, with lines like these:
"...My spirit sleeping somewhere cold/Until you find it there and lead it back home...Call my name and save me from the dark...Bring me to life..."

Everybody's Fool- This song criticizes celebreties who lie and allow people to idolize them, and she knows that they are fakes pretending to be perfect.
"...Oh, how we love you/No flaws when you're pretending...Without the mask/Where will you hide?/Can't find yourself/Lost in your lie..."

My Immortal- This is about a friend who has died but still lingers in Lee's mind.
"...I've tried so hard to tell myself that you're gone/But though you're still with me/I've been alone all along..."

Haunted- A cautionary word to parents, if you are thinking about getting this CD for your younger kids (12 and under), just know that this song does have content you may not want them listening to just yet. This song is about a girl who is held captive by someone she can't see, but he is always tormenting her. He is the only one she knows and loves because he is what keeps her alive, but at the same time she hates him for keeping her where she is.
"...Watching me, wanting me/I can feel you pull me down/Saving me, raping me...I won't let you pull me down..."

Tourniquet- This is another song you should take some caution with if you're thinking about letting your younger kids listen to this, as the message is that the singer is spiritually lost and confused and wants to die.
"...Am I too lost to be saved?...My God, my tourniquet/Return to me salvation...I want to die!!!..."

Imaginary- This is just about Lee's imaginary world she wants to go to when the real world is too much for her to handle, but she can't seem to get there.
"...Swallowed up in the sound of my screaming/Cannot cease for the fear of silent nights/Oh, how I long for the deep sleep dreaming/The goddess of imaginary light..."

Taking Over Me- This song is about obsession. Like Bring Me to Life, it could be interpreted as a prayer to God.
"...I believe in you/I'll give up everything just to find you/I have to be with you/To live, to breathe/You're taking over me..."

Hello- This song is about Amy's younger sister, who died when she was just three and Amy was six.
"...Has no one told you she's not breathing?/Hello/I'm your mind, giving you someone to talk to/Hello..."

My Last Breath- Lee says that she was inspired to write this song after the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. It tells of a person who is dying and it is through the dying person's perspective.
"...All I wanted to say was I love you and I'm not afraid...I know you hear me/I can taste it in your tears...Calling me, calling me as you fade to black..."

Whisper- Now this song sounds very spiritual, but the lyrics are kind of creepy for younger listeners. It seems to have a similar message to Tourniquet.
"...Catch me as I fall/Say you're here and it's all over now...Don't turn away (Don't give in to the pain)/Don't try to hide (Though they're screaming your name)/Don't close your eyes (God knows what lies behind them)/Don't turn out the lights (Never sleep, never die)...I'm frightened by what I see...Fallen angels at my feet...Death before my eyes, lying next to me I fear..."

So, there you have it, those are all my opinions on this item in a nutshell. I hope this was helpful!
