- Having heard the two most popular albums by Nickelback, SILVER SIDE UP and ALL THE RIGHT REASONS, I decided to buy this one as well because I knew a few of the songs on it and remembered that I didn't have this one yet. I wasn't sure if I was going to like it, but after listening to it a few times I decided this is their best album of the three that I've heard. It's the closest to perfect I've ever heard on a post-grunge album.
I thought SILVER SIDE UP was too heavy on the guitars and all of the songs sounded too similar, and I thought ALL THE RIGHT REASONS was a better album but sounded too forced for the mainstream. This album has the perfect balance of metal-influenced heavy rock and hook-filled choruses that would sound great on rock radio (a few of them proved they do). The reader is probably familiar with at least the song "Someday". That song and "Do This Anymore" are probably the most ballad-like, with lyrics focusing on broken relationships over soaring harmonies and great hooks in the chorus. Other songs are heavier, such as the barn-burning opener "Flat on the Floor", "Because of You", and the merciless guitar-riffer "Throw Yourself Away". What makes this album stand out from the aforementioned others is the consistency of this album; the band knows what they're doing and sounds like they're having fun doing it. Even on tracks like the acoustic-based "Should've Listened", which is a step in a different direction for the band, the quartet pulls it off perfectly.
Buy this album if you're a casual Nickelback fan like myself, and get a taste of this popular group at their best.
- Note that in my introduction I've pointed out that this album has increased the number of options the band has for it's live set. What it doesn't do is expand the Nickelback sound beyond some slight alterations to the production qualities from their previous album. What it does do however is to expand their catalogue with more of the same accomplished and very rock radio friendly hard rock. And there is nothing wrong with that.
What your unlikely to get from this band are departures like their heroes Metallica did with their Load and Reload, this is a band that seems very focussed on what they want to achieve and they go after their targets and it's a form of professionalism that can stunt creativity a bit but it also produces consistent results.
Listening to this album while writing this review it becomes apparent that the bands love of musuclar riffing that bludgens their audience has not diminished. Opener Flat On The Floor is a perfect example of the sort of post grunge hard rock rifferama your going to get with this. Second cut Do This Anymore is more of the same with it's Chad Kroeger vocal lead laid over the top of unspectacular yet insistent guitar blasts.
This consistency means Nickelback are a very safe bet for punter, their fans know just what they are getting in the same way that AC/DC fans or Yngwie Malmsteen fans know what they are in for before the disc even hits their stereo. That could be construed as a bad thing but I'm willing to forgive Nickelback their familiarity, their lack of real departure from their norm, in order to get an album I know I can throw on and listen from beginning to end.
That's not to say that there are no variations from the opening note to the closing one. There are rockers such as the first two cuts mentioned earlier. There are songs that are ballads and there are songs with a sense of humour, all tied neatly together with that feeling you get when one of your mates starts telling you a story you've heard a dozen times before. And there are a number of songs that fall somewhere between rocker and ballad, a sort of rock radio staple sound and I find it impossible to hate Nickelback for their discovery of a successful formula.
With musicianship that's of a decent standard yet never ego driven, good production qualities that retain a human feeling and a feeling of familiarity in almost every sound bite this album is more of the same in the best way.
- I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE this album as I do "For all the right reasons" I can't imagine anyone not liking it. They are my favorite band ever (and I'm almost 50) and I never get sick of listening to them EVER!
Keep up the GREAT work CHAD and band!! LOVE LOVE LOVE you all~!!!

FAN 4 LIFE!!!!
- I bought this CD shortly after I bought my Father the limited edition version , my advice is , if you don't own the Punisher , Daredevil or three sided coin CDS , buy the limited edition version , otherwise this CD is a must have.
- I just heard the song "Figured you out" last week - June of 07'. I was flipping around on my car radio, and stopped on this song cause it totally rocked! But, once I payed attention to the lyrics, I was appalled they were playiing this song at 1pm in the afternoon! This song is degrading to women - it promotes sexual violence and applauds a female who is submissive and has low self esteem. How can we as a society say it's okay for radio stations to play a song like this, especially during hours most children could be listening. Needless to say, I am extremely disappointed in Nickelback for writing this song - as well as the new song "Rockstar". Shame on you guys. You may not have asked to be role models, but you are now. Show some integrity and live up to it.

- This is 10 Years' fourth album, technically. First two aren't that well known at all...and they changed lead singers after their first album. Anyways, I was very excited when I heard about this album. I have been a fan of 10 Years for a long time. The first time I listened through this album, I absolutely loved it and I still love it. I love the subject matter, music, and, of course, the vocals of Jesse Hasek.
The album is diverse enough sound-wise to keep me interested the entire time through. In my eyes, there is only one weak track on the album and that's "Picture Perfect." Other than that, the album is solid. As much as I love this album, however, I think "The Autumn Effect" is much, much better overall.
The main problem with this album is that the song structure is very *yawn*. Every song follows the V1-C-V2-C-BR-C-C pattern. It get very boring after awhile. Thankfully, the vocals and the lyrics are good enough to cover up the boring structure of the songs.
If you liked "The Autumn Effect," I'd suggest this album. If you've never heard "The Autumn Effect," but that first.
P.S. If you can get a hold of the special version with the two extra tracks...do it; They're my favorites on the album, actually.
- As a an unexpected purchase, I was pleasantly surprised by this cd. Despite what others say, I don't hear Keenan's voice at all in 10 years lead. Honestly he's just not on that level that Keenan is, and to compare is doing Keenan a great disrespect. He sounds more like Taproots lead to me, and the music is about on par. I don't really think you're going to find anything highly original in this cd, but you will find a solid rock cd, with transparent lyrics, solid vocals, and a little mix of all kinds of rock genre sounds. If you're looking for some music that you can easily identify with, that isn't too far off from the norm, this is the one for you.
- to "The Autumn Effect"...Didn't run out to buy right away, even though I was very impressed by the previous. But after hearing "Beautiful" several times,it has won me over.Sorry I waited so long.Solid from beginning to end...Actions & Motives,Beautiful,11:ooAM(Daydreamer),Russian Roulette,Drug of Choice & So Long-Goodbye highlight this real fine album. If you are like me and hesitated on this album, don't wait any longer.Get it now!!!!! It is intense...
- This album is just a great as their first...would recommend to anyone who likes their sound.
- This entire CD is great. Refreshing sound, and thoughtful lyrics. We love it.

- This CD makes NICKELBACK famous - worldwide. And i can only agree with other customers. It's still the best! The Real Thing - because of tracks like "HOW YOU REMIND ME" and my all-time favourite "TOO BAD". It hits you like a hammer! That are burners! Because of that 4* - The rest is trash!
All other albums haven't got a soul - every single repeats itself. In a very few moments Chad can get a hit (for example only in corporation WITH SANTANA "INTO THE NIGHT" 2007). But that's it! I LIKE NICKELBACK VERY MUCH, but every artist had TOP CLASS times - now (in 2008) it's going down... Mainstream - making money as much as you can...
WHEN YOU LIKE NICKELBACK AT IT'S BEST - TAKE THIS ONE... (from 2001). This album contains the hot stuff.
PS: Nickelback is a very good live-band too! I can only say watch on YouTube NICKELBACK "TOO BAD" or "HOW YOU REMIND ME" LIVE AT >>ROCK AM RING<< 2004 - Eifel, Nuerburgring - (FESTIVAL IN GERMANY) and you know what i mean...
- Whenever I hear these singles on the radio, I want to gouge my ears with an ice pick just so I never have to hear another Nickelback song. I flip through 4 stations and sometimes all 4 are playing Nickelback(or someone trying to sound like them). If this is the sound of this generation, then music is dead.
- Nickelback is one of those bands that critics and "real music" fans hate, while their fans lap it up in droves. To me, they are the typical saga of a hard-working road-warrior band that finally grabbed the brass ring. Listening to "Silver Side Up" drives the 'bar band makes good' tag home, with a caveat inserted...I pretty much like this album.
Granted, Nickelback distills their favorite bands into an easily digestible sound. Soundgarden and Alice In Chains seem likely contributors, but in my heart, this reaches back to all the travelling bands of the 80's like Reo Speedwagon, Head East or BTO from the 70's. Singer Chad Kroeger has a distinctive if not very distinguished voice, the songs are generic grunge-lite, and the band throws in "issues" to make themselves relevant. When the lead song on your album is a chord bashing revenge song about an abused spouse who fights back, well, it ain't your typical party anthem stuff.
However, that happens to be the best thing here (and when you remind yourself that the followup The Long Road's "Figured You Out" is a song about debasing someone sexually, it seems off-kilter), and the album soon begins to sound like the same song 9 different ways. That's not to say that Nickelback is bad, they stand out from most of the early century grungettes (Staind, Puddle Of Mudd, Incubus, etc) that seem to think sounding heavy substitutes for good songwriting. And if there's one thing this band has a knack for, it is laying down a hook, over and over. Both "How You Remind Me" and "Too Bad" deal in sour topics (a cynical break-up and growing up without a father) while sticking to the roof of your brain.
So critical and snobs be dammed. "Silver Side Up" matters most to the folks that buy CD's. In a time when hardly anyone, even the heavy hitters, can sell past gold, Nickelback (along with Daughtry) was one of the very few rock acts to go multi-platinum in 2007. From the POV of the jury of purchasing peers, their workmanlike chops and rock-cum-pop sense gets the last laugh.
- First Nickelback CD I bought , now I have the Silver side up + Live at Home DVD 2 disc set , witch ever one you buy is fine , the CD is the same ,but if your a big fan , buy the 2 disc set version.
- After getting "All the Right Reasons" I got all of Nickelback's older albums. While all are very good, I like this one the best. It has a grungy, hard-rock edge to it that I like and all of the songs on this album are very good!
The songs that stand out on this album are "Never Again", "Too Bad", "Just For", "Woke Up This Morning", "Money Bought" and "Good Times Gone". I do not like "How You Remind Me" too much because of all of the radio airplay it got when the song became popular. In my view, the overplay on the radio killed "How You Remind Me".
While I understand the frustration of many who say that Nickelback "sold out" because they decided to go more mainstream. However, I think they were developing their sound like many other bands do and see no difference between Nickelback's sound development and Soundgarden's doing the same thing.
While Soundgarden is, by far, a superior band (I have all of their CDs too), I can appreciate Nickelback's approach since they obviously have to balance making music and selling albums in order to make a living.
I think down the line Nickelback can "return to their roots" and crank out an album just as good as this one. It worked for The Scorpions and Pearl Jam and I think it can happen for these guys too.

- I can't believe it's taken me 12 years before writing this review. What I am glad of though is that I didn't write this within a year of buying "Evil Empire"; when this came out in 1996, I - like many - was expecting a bombastic array of accessible riffage, heavy ranting and slick production similar to RATM's debut. What we got however was a grimy, dark and sinister effort that better showed off RATM's hiphop and punk influences. This was a shock. And it probably explains why it took me a while to get into. Now however, I listen to this album with a huge amount of satisfaction. Everything about it is great: Zack de la Rocha's voice is so aggressive, so vitriolic and just so downright convincing; the guitars and bass (oh, the BASS!) tap very different frequencies so each is heard equally, even though they often play the same thing; and the drums - although not jaw dropping - support everything perfectly. The only thing missing was Tom Morello's speedy guitar shenanigans - but even these aren't missed terribly because the music doesn't cry out for them in the way their first album did. Listening to this album on headphones while walking down the street is as close to what it must be like on heroin - makes you feel 10 foot tall and that bullets will bounce off you. I don't know what else to say - words literally fail me at the sheer greatness of this album. Together with Mr Bungle's "California" and Soundgarden's "Superunknown", I have my desert island discs (and probably the best slab of 1990's rock). An essential purchase for rock connoisseurs everywhere.
- it took me a little while to get into this album, but when I did I enjoy it, It is just really good, the sound, the feel, it is a great second album for Rage!! totally should buy it, it is so good I have no words to describe, Has to be heard to be believed!!
- RATM, as heard on this album, are no doubt legends in this genre and have influenced bands that have followed. Are there any other bands like RATM? I know of no other band except NYC-based Kongcrete whom I discovered when I saw their awesome video for their Joker theme song for The Dark Knight movie. The music video and music rock! Their other songs on myspace.com/kongcrete, Amazon, and iTunes are like Rage, Korn, Linkin Park, and Publc Enemy on steroids. And they seem to be inspired by horror and action movies. Anybody know more about this band? They have a poll on myspace, and I voted for Punisher as the next movie they need to write a song for.
- Don't hurt me now.
Not quite a sophomore slump; I give it 3.5 stars. Doesn't have the aggressive freshness of the debut nor does it rock as hard as the third one. This falls somewhere in between (literally). Rage's MOR record.
Recommended, but get the other two first.
- Of the entire Rage catalog, nothing comes off as hard, as heavy, as poignant as Evil Empire. Probably they're most recognizable album, Evil Empire is filled with hard hitting power. The first three songs (the trilogy of rock - People of the Sun, to Bulls on Parade, to Vietnow) define the pace of the entire album. Down Rodeo has, for me, some of the best lyrics I've ever heard in a song. I still get goosebumps all these years later. "These people ain't seen a brown skinned man since their grandparents bought one."
I miss this band, and am thrilled to see them working together again. I dream of seeing a new album from them. I hope it comes close to Evil Empire.

- Jeez how many of you are on the Taproot Street Team??? Seriously, a deaf retarded gender-confused monkey with AIDS could tell you that this album blows. The only good thing about this album is "Path Less Taken". That is a good song, but the rest of the album is emo garbage. "It's Natural" is the worst Taproot song I have ever heard. And to think they recorded 50 + songs and these are the best out of all of them. I am so disappointed in this band. They had potential to be really great, but unfortunately they left their balls at the recording studio back in 2000. This is the kind of music you would expect to hear in a nursing home in Florida. I'm really hoping it will grow on me like BSR did (which is still very mediocre), but I just don't see it this time. Really, really disappointing. Great job Taproot, I'm sure the Jonas Brothers would love to have you open for them. You'd fit right in. My speakers need to be woken up, going to put in Death Magnetic.
- When I first listened to this album, the change in styles reminded me of the same sort of transition that Linkin Park made with their latest album "Minutes to Midnight". Taproot's new album, like Linkin Park's, is a more melodic, less intense medley of songs. However, songs like "The Path Less Taken" and "Take It" demonstrate that our boys can still make some kick butt songs that are more of what we are used to as Taproot fans. On the other hand, Taproot shows signs of growth in the song "As One". This song is by far one of the catchiest songs I've ever heard. I challenge you to listen to it and not get it stuck in your head. Overall, I am pleased with this album. While it is different, it is still great. There have been some mixed reviews about this album, but listen to it with an open mind. I'm sure you will come to appreciate it as well as the new Taproot.
- I'm a die hard TapRoot fan ,but this one misses the mark.I loved everything up to this point.I wish they would go back to the harder stuff, just a thought. The first song is ok.
- Lacking: A good producer and mixer! Album is scattered and recorded horribly! Have been a major fan of Taproot since the beginning and will most likely not by another one of their albums!
- Taproot's latest effort "Our Long Road Home" is a bit disappointing, especially considering they released this album independently. You would think with the creative freedom they would do some major experimenting and continue to grow as a band. Instead they did the complete opposite and made a typical rock album which sounds like they weren't really trying to do much.
There are some positives to this album. Stephens voice still continues to amaze me. Also there are a few good tunes "Path Less Taken" "Wherever I Stand" and "Hand That Holds True" are a few of my favorites. But it is "Karmaway" that is above and beyond anything else on the album.
Now the negatives to the album. Almost every song seems to follow the same outline. This leaves an unoriginal feel throughout. Some of the lyrics are just too simplistic, especially in "Your Not Home Tonight" and "Run To". Also there is a lack of instrument solos. Every member of this band is extremely talented and it would be nice if Mike Phil and Jarrod would show more of the potential i know they have in them. Overall there just seems to be a lack of creativity here.
Taproot took a huge step forward with "Blue-Sky Research" and i was hoping for them to continue down that path. Instead they took two steps backwards and ended up with another "Welcome". I just hope with there next effort they really push themselves and make the album i know they are capable of making.

- The clarity of this "soundtrack" is simply amazing. MTV did a superb job with the setup of this event. I was blown away when I heard the cd version, but hearing it with my cheap Yamaha equipment in DTS took it to another level. It is a shame he is still not around; what an amazing talent this guy had. RIP KC.
- It's amazing, but not unexpected, to see such a lack of pretense throughout these acoustic translations of much heavier material. The entire concert was bathed in Cobain's tragic warmth and frazzled soul, injecting a tremendous amount of integrity into nearly every strum and vocalization, while the band backs up at their restrained best, revealing a side seldom seen, and one fans were most fortunate to have seen before the end.
- In my opinion, the greatest MTV Unplugged album ever. They proved that they were more than just a grunge band, and Cobain brought his pain briefly to the surface.
- When I first got this album I simply could not stop listening to it not only one of the best live albums but one of the best albums ever and that says a lot since before i got this cd I wasnt into acoustic cds i liked my music load and heavy and now because of this cd I now love acoustic songs , which I think its a good change of pace.even thou I hate Mtv ,its nirvana so what the hell here are my favourite songs
1 jesus dont want me for a sumbeam
2 come as you are
3 polly
4 lake of fire
5 were did you sleep last night
be sure to pick up the dvd of this classic album
- Nirvana was a rock band. Their style was loud, raw, aggressive. Kurt Cobain abused his guitars. Dave Grohl pounded the living daylights out of his drums. Krist Novoselic jumped around on stage like a madman.
So what happens when you hand Cobain an acoustic guitar, tell Grohl to play his drums with brushes, and force Krist to sit still?
Well, you get a very interesting album. I will agree with many of the glowing reviews on here, this performance has alot of emotional punch - in places. But I wonder if perhaps too much of this emotional stuff is read into these performances in light of Cobain's death. Yes, he screams and plunks his guitar with great vigor, but he was also high on herion.
It's somewhat interesting to hear Nirvana play "Come As You Are" unplugged - but it's much better played full-force with electric guitars. And it's okay hearing Cobain play "Pennyroyal Tea" solo, messing up the lyrics and hitting the wrong chords - but it doesn't hold a candle to the full electric arrangement.
The best parts of this album are the cover songs. "The Man Who Sold the World" is a fun song, as are the three Meat Puppet covers; and most folks are in agreement that "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" is spine tingling. If you get this album for no other reason, get it for the cover songs.
So while this is an interesting foray into "what happens when you strip a rock band of what made them famous" - it's not a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination. It's the point of "Unplugged" to put a band in unfamiliar waters, but that doesn't mean it always turns out well.
Nirvana made music that was intended to be plugged in. That's what Nirvana was - loud, kick-your-teeth-in rock. "Unplugged" does not do them justice.

- This is a good CD to get if you've heard a couple STP songs you like but aren't ready to commit to a studio album yet. It has virtually every song you'll hear in various music games or on the radio (minus "Dead & Bloated").
- Will do till I can get all the albums sent over from home. Doesn't replace the first 3 albums.
- For the price this is a great album, I highly recommend it. I also recommend the albums "Core" and "Purple" there are yet other great songs not listed on this album that can be found on them such as "Meat Plow", "Unglued" "Pretty Penny"
- Best "Greatest Hits" CD ever put out. This compilation is a strong representation of STP's best. CD jacket is fab as well.
- Stone Temple Pilots are an excellant band, with many great songs to contribute to and I was impressed with the selection made for this compilation, however it was a little short for me...I mean 12 tracks? Come on they could have doen better and added more songs to the mix. I was really hoping for "Dancing Days" and other good songs by STP and was dissappointed that they were not there. Other than that the album is pretty good with many good songs on it.

- This is the textbook definition of a band selling out: trading in great hard rock pieces with little publicity for generic poppy tunes that are suddenly all over the radio. I hope theyre happy with themselves. Listen to the first 2 albums instead.
- Great CD. The group does not get enough credit or publicity. One of my new favorites!
- I am really enjoying this CD. Finger 11 really hits the mark for me in this CD. I like several cuts from the record already. Of course, just like everyone else, I love Paralyzer.
- Fozzy's new CD All That Remains Reloaded is really good as Anthony mentioned. However, I also think that Finger Eleven is completely underated. Strong groove that flows with the vocals....they finally got it right, in my opinion.
- Don't ya hate when you have to listen to a new album a dozen times before you can tell the songs apart? You won't have that problem here. There is a variety of musical moods on this album that is sure to please. This album projects Finger Eleven to the front of the line, sure to introduce them to a greater audience, and make them a household name. By far the best album I've heard in a long while.

- This album is simply beautiful. IMO, Smashing Pumpkins is one of the great bands that came out of the 90s and honestly, no band today can compare to what Smashing Pumpkins was able to do. Their music is so distinctive and unique that you know when it's a Smashing Pumpkins song you're listening to.
Some of the songs on this album: Disarm, Today, Rocket, Cherub Rock, and Mayonaise. Frankly, the entire album is awesome, you can't go wrong buying this album as all the songs are incredible. I'll just give a few thoughts of a few of the songs I mentioned.
I think Disarm has a pensive and somber tone, with the strings giving an almost bittersweet sound, and of course Billy Corgan's unmistakable voice that just makes the song perfect.
Rocket has a weird, odd rhythm to it, seems appropriate to the song, flying free. It sounds out there and surreal, but in a good way.LOL. I love the guitar riffs that accompany this song.
Today seems to strike a very nostalgic chord, a lot of yearning and wistful. Again, Billy Corgan's singing voice really captures this feeling quite well.
Cherub Rock is loud and will blow you away with its catchy guitar riffs.
Mayonaise is my favorite song on the entire album. I can listen to this song over and over again without getting bored of it. The beginning guitar solo is haunting, exquisite, and so mesmerizing. It's about a 45 second guitar solo and I think it's the best part. The best part because it sets up the mood of the song so well, of an almost dreamy contemplation tinged with melancholiness.
I highly recommend this album, heck you can't go wrong with Smashing Pumpkins, also check out their other albums, in particular Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
- this is the 1st album i heard from these guys. Well, actually the song Today. i didn't like the video nor the song. same thing with disarm. but i really liked cherub rock and rocket was good too. later i heard mayonaise and liked it.
same thing with mellon collie. i heard 1979 and loved it. i heard the rest and couldnt get through it.
Well 10 years later i decide to listen to their whole catalog in itunes.
um, gish is a terrific album. i like the slow trippy stuff. siamese dream however aside form some good tracks i still dont like. something about the sound of the guitars and the melodies... sounds fake or trendy.
mellon collie however took me by surprise. it shows the band really matured and made a whole 2cd set that is ALL good.
- It's good to hear some more music from the early 90's that was able to escape grunge's tentacles. There are a few elements in there that make it comparable to that genre, but it's really closer to alternative rock that got more popular later on. I feel like the album might be a little longer than it needs to, and some of the songs are a little similar, but nothing in particular felt like it needed to be changed or cut. A lot of the songs sounded similar to stuff that came out later, which points to it being pretty influential to modern rock. A song like "Today" for example, sounds like something I've heard fifty times before, but might be the first time it was made. Sort of like Nevermind, I respect it more than I liked it, but I did like it it more than that.
I knew "Cherub Rock" already from a couple music games last year, and it's more enjoyable when you're not playing a plastic instrument and screwing up more than you think you should be. "Disarm" is another single I've heard before, and sets itself apart from the other tracks with lots of strings and bells creating the atmosphere instead of guitar. It's followed and complemented well by "Soma", which is a soft, acoustic song that slowly builds to a nice release. "Silverf##k" isn't a bad song, but I feel like it hurts the flow of the rest of the record. It's quite long and sort of progressive, and while no element is bad, it just bores me a bit before the last couple tracks pull it back in another stylistic switch. Few moments on the album truly grabbed me, but it was solidly written and performed rock throughout.
- This CD is a classic, to quote the salesperson that sold it to me "this CD is beautiful".
- Siamese Dream by Smashing Pumpkins really brought this indie rock band into the limelight. Frontman Billy Corgan has an unique voice and his songwriting is pure heart even when he sings about nothing profound. Songs like Today, Rocket, Maynnoise, and the song that got me hooked, Disarm (still one of my favorite songs of all-time). This is a great album from the early '90s and this cd was produced by Butch Vig who went on to form his own band, Garbage. Get this classic today!

- I've seen The Avett Bros live once and they were awesome. This CD has been spinning in my CD player non-stop for months and I do not get tired of it. Just booked to see them again next month. I haven't been this excited about a group since the DMB. Talented musicians and songwriters and just a load of fun! They are energetic and know how to mix it up.
- ok, I'm editing this review because I feel bad giving them such a hard time. About five songs are really good. The rest was just weepy without being very interesting.
Compared to other bands it's an ok album, just not nearly as good as "Four Thieves Gone" and "Mignonette". They loose a lot of their raw edge and punk-y-ness. Sentimental gives way to sappy here. There is nothing gripping in the sound here either.
What happened to those bluegrass-y punks that screamed and yelled through their songs and made me feel like I was drinkin' in the back of a truck, driving in the country while my friends (and I) rock on guitars and banjos?
I don't even want to play this one for friends - I used to show off the Avett Bros. coolness before.
- Great CD!! I saw these guys live and it just might have been one of the best shows I have ever seen.
- The Avett Brothers are some of the best songwriters out there today. They have a way of cutting topics down to the simple heart of them and revealing something very true. Their CD Emotionalism is one of my favorite CDs I have in my collection, up there with U2/the Joshua Tree and Bob Marley/Legend (I have many more interesting selections but that's for another post). I simply cannot play the album enough times. The album is somewhat mellow, and you should know that they take on a completely different persona live and play with tremendous energy live. They scream a good bit too, giving it something like a punk-bluegrass feel to it (One of the brothers Scott moonlights in a heavy metal band called "Oh what a nightmare"). In short, the concerts are FUN and they are building a very loyal following, myself included.
- My wife and I saw these guys in Nashville this past Friday night at their Grand Ole Opry debut and they are definitely on to something new! They are cutting edge, not really country and not really alternative but somewhere in-between. Whatever category you put them in, they are great! Once I heard them, I bought their album the next day. Listen with an open mind and they will grow on you quickly.
