  1. Many people find me to be a person of refined and cultured taste. I like Classical music and jazz. I like to visit art museums, and I like to read poetry. All I can say about "Smokey and the Bandit" is this: it is a silly, stupid movie of little or no cultural or artistic significance; HOWEVER, I can't help but not like it. I laugh and laugh during the whole movie even though I have seen it about 100 times.

Other movies may be more artful and serious, but "Smokey and the Bandit" is such great fun. The most recent time I watched this movie was during a terrible weekend while I was waiting to pass some kidney stones. The pain was intense and I was trying to cope with it. I took some Motrin and played "Smokey and the Bandit". I began to smile and laugh and I almost forgot how sick I was. Movies like this do a great service to mankind.

  2. I purchased this for DVD for a friend, she was thrilled to receive it.
She loves the Burt Reynolds and Sally Fields combo. She loves to laugh at movies, rarely watches dramas.

I'm sure this was a great choice for her gift.

  3. one of the best comedy films ever made
for me its number one a true classic

  4. "East Bound and Down" is one of the great country songs, and this movie is the greatest road movie ever made, the redneck "Easy Rider," the AMERICAN "Easy Rider" (as Patton said, "Americans love a winner and will not tolerate a loser!"), filled with car chases and car wrecks, one babe, a beautifully ridiculous story, the great Jerry Reed at his weary but sarcastic redneck best, and Burt R.'s mustache at its cheesiest. It's the movie those two hippie goofs in "Easy Rider" might have made if they'd taken themselves less seriously. In "Smokey and the Bandit" one of the protagonists gets the babe, both get the cash and then let it ride on a double-or-nothing, and go on to greater adventures. At least one of the hippies in "Easy Rider" was unable to close the deal with a chippie, and both died in the mud in Louisiana. Killed by rednecks!

"Smokey and the Bandit" is worth watching at any time, even with commercial interruptions. Great enough to own a copy. Five stars.

  5. Anti-establishment late '70s truckin' fun movie. Great flick with truckin', hot rods and CB radio-speak. A magnificant late '70s American movie. Great cast. Burt is perfect, as is Jackie Gleason as the ultimate redneck sheriff. (Jerry Reed is easy to ignore, but SHINED.) Sally Field shined as well. It's easy to see how Burt and Sally hooked up after this one in real life. The chemistry showed in the movie and helped make it real. Very funny. You need to watch it for what it's worth. They were'nt trying for an Oscar. (Thank goodness.) If you like a simple plot with car-chase action, you will LOVE this movie.

5 comments about Akira.
  1. An amazing trend setting Animated film; intense, believable characters, deep story line, incredible animation, sound, and music. A pivotal, groundbreaking work that has inspired animators and film makers since.

  2. Akira in many ways put Anime on the map, at least in the US, but is deserves to be recognized as more than a gateway film into the world of Anime. It is the classic post-apocalyptic setting, a story about what happens when science and teenage hormones run amuck. The film tells the story of a teenage motorcycle gang, and their troubled, latent psychic and second in command Tetsuo. It is an examination of diverse psychology, The Will To Power, corruption in various forms, and ultimately, sacrifice. The artistry of the animation is still amazing almost twenty years later, and the story is just as compelling now as it was then.

  3. It really is unbelievable just how many animes derived and used something from this movie. Obvious origins can be compared to Dragon Ball and Elfen Lied, but so many ideas were first featured in this film that later translated into full-length anime series. Aside from setting the groundwork for future animes, this film was also one of the greatest, if not the greatest, anime film ever made (though my favorite is still Spirited Away).
The best aspect of this film, in my opinion, is the character development of Kaneda and Tetsuo, best friends in the film. While Kaneda evolves into a more empathatic person, Tetsuo makes the most dramatic changes, from a jealous and weak individual, to an insane, angry, blood thirsty villian, to a frightened child who clearly realizes his mistakes. Tetsuo has to be my personal favorite villian from any film, purely due to how well he is developed and the absolute human, kind-natured side to him that is apparent throughout the film.
Besides that, the movie is the orgin of anime for most anime fans, and is an absolute must-see film for anyone in my opinion, even for those who don't usually like anime. I mean, who doesn't like an awesome story line, great character developemnt, big explosions with high intensity sequences, and a great ending in my opinion. One of the greatest anime films ever made, and the film that really started it all for anime's popularity.

  4. I found this Anime to be enjoyable. Vivid colors and DTS sound envelope you into the movie. Backed by an interesting story.

Very imaginative and captivating. However as good as it was I have sceen many other Anime's I would rate better then this movie. Still a must see.

  5. I'll make it short; there is no reason to fully restate the contents of this, as it's available from countless other authors and places.

    *SPOILER WARNING*

I read the original comic (in Danish, though, and later in English), and in watching the Anime adaptation, I got severely disappointed. Yes, I know that you can never make a perfectly 'honest' translation of something from one form of media to another, but still, I had my hopes set for something more than this.

One part of it is the way the plot and storyline of the print version is torn apart and odd stuff that seems out of place is inserted in the animated version instead. Fx. (probably the most noticable difference, in retrospect) why is Akira reduced from a living being to a collection of formaldehyde specimen jars? Why has the foreign intervention been erased (the US Aircraft carrier in Japanse waters). Why is Lady Miyako changed from a withdrawn and insightful person to what appears a religious lunatic cult leader (i for some reason, found this insulting!)? Why was the Post-Nuke Neo-Tokyo cult following around Akira/Tetsuo toned down to the point of annihalation?

Too much of the good stuff that gave essence to the comic has been ripped out, and it shows.

Sitting back and seeing the movie end, and the scrolltext enter the screen, I felt robbed. I expected more than this. (Sure, it's an open ending, but you can surely make open-ended movies much better and more telling than this!).

Even though this classic is obviously praised by many of the old-timers, I wouldn't recommend watching it if you haven't already. (If you haven't read the print version, you may like it better that I have, but on the other hand, if you go ahead and read it afterwards....). I also expect to get a few flames directed at me too, judging from other responses to critical reviews on this board. Oh well. :I

5 comments about Werewolves on Wheels.
  1. Why isn't there a rating lower than 1, like "never mind", for stinkpots like this flick? To the person above my post. STOP your lying, you weren't no extra in this movie. You probably weren't even a gleam in 2 drunken rednecks eyes when this crapolla was made. "I" was an extra in this movie. I was the Satanic Priest who cursed the two bikers and sent them on their way. NO, I'm only kidding, I wasn't no extra. But neither was this clown above me. I only seen this movie once, and that was enough for me. I love xploitation, road movies, and horrors flicks and all, but this movie didn't do any justice to any of those gens. Buy it if you want, but you'll more than likely regret it later.

  2. Did you ever see those old commercials for Reese's Buttercups? The ones where one person's got a bar of chocolate, another person just happens to be standing around with a jar of peanut butter, and some thing happens causing the two edible products get mixed together? Afterwards the two individuals accuse each other of ruining their respective foodstuffs, that is until they taste the combination and discover `two great tastes taste great together'. Well, that's not really the case here with Werewolves on Wheels (1971), as someone tried to mix two genres (biker films and horror films) together, the result being something that tastes kinda icky, cinematically speaking. Co-written and directed (his debut) by Michel Levesque, who would later find his true calling as art director on films like Supervixens (1975), Cannonball! (1976), and Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens (1979), the film features Stephen Oliver, who would later go on to portray the muscled heavy Dugan Hicks in the films The Van (1977) and Malibu Beach (1978), both of which I've had an opportunity to see, for better or worse. Also appearing is Severn Darden (Vanishing Point, The Hired Hand), D.J. Anderson (Dream No Evil), Duece Berry, Billy Gray (The Navy vs. the Night Monsters), inventor of the F-1 guitar pick, and Barry McGuire, former member of The New Christy Minstrels and artist behind the 1960s protest song "Eve of Destruction".

After nearly four minutes of opening credits set against, what else, a group of bikers toolin' down the road, the movie begins proper as said bikers, known as the Devils Advocates (according to their colors), led by Adam (Oliver), chase down a hapless pair of men in an old pick up truck (the driver had a near miss with one of the bikers). The gang finally catches up to the pair at a gas station, proceed to give the driver a beating, followed by fun and games with the gawky, geeky gas station attendant, during which a gang member moll named Shirley pops her top...not bad, a severe thrashing and some sleazy boobage all in the first ten minutes...anyway, soon the gang is back on the road, and they end up camping near a strange, isolated structure populated by monks in brown robes (all members of a Satanic cult). The monks offer the gang some bread and wine, which turns out to be drugged, and the bikers pass out. The leader of the cult, simply named One (Darden), engages in an overly long black magic ceremony, the intent being to turn Adam's chicky Helen (Anderson) into a bride for Satan, culminating in a nekkid snake dance by an enchanted Helen. The gang, finally rising from their doped up stupor, proceed to crack some monk skulls, snatch up Helen, and escape into the desert to `get their heads straight'. They seem in the free and clear, that is until night falls and a couple of members get viciously mauled and killed by some shadowy figures emitting guttural animal-like noises. The bad vibes continue as each night following brings more attacks, and we learn a couple of member of the gang begin displaying lycanthropic tendencies, brought on by a super whammy placed on them by the cult. The plan now is to return to where the cult is and settle the score once and for all, that is if they can keep from ripping each other's throats out before getting there...

This movie started out with potential, but as it progressed, it seemed something was missing...oh yeah, a story. Actually, I think the plot got lost during one of the 162 scenes where we see the boys riding through the southwestern landscapes, perhaps falling off the back of one of the choppers and ending up among the tumbleweeds, never to be seen again. As a result, we get a whole mess of pointless sequences of the boys riding their bikes from place to place, and drinking beer, making camp, building bonfires, and wrestling with each other in the desert (seriously). Eventually the horror elements kick in, as a couple members of the gang go wolfen on their brethren, setting up for a decent biker/werewolf clash near the end, but the wait was long and boring. There were a couple of bright spots, one being during the funeral for the first two members killed (the other members attributed their deaths to accidental causes, namely they were stoned out of their minds, fell down a wash, and broke their necks). Adam delivers a proper eulogy for his fellow biker brother, followed by someone else asking about Shirley (the man's girlfriend, who also died), and another replies `She was a great freak, man!' Another sort of impromptu bit of humor comes from an encounter with an older, uptight, opinionated, mouthy gas station the boys goof on before stealing his gas. My biggest disappointment with this movie was the general lack of skull crackin' fun. During the confrontation between the bikers and the cult members, the cult offers no resistance to getting smacked around, each falling to the ground once struck. I was hoping for some sort of battle royal, the bikers vs. the Satanists, but it never came. Even after the bikers took off, there was no pursuit by the cult members for the sake of retribution.

Here are some things I learned from this film...

    1. Bikers sure like to wrestle with each other (maybe a little too much).
    2. Bikers generally don't pay for gas.
    3. Bikers spend a lot of time trying to `get their heads together'.
    4. When on fire, rolling yourself on the ground into a bonfire isn't helpful.

Another disappointing aspect was we don't get to see any real beast action until the last third of the movie. Things do pick near the end, as the movie finally gets its wolf on, and I'll say the creature make-up was decent. There is some bloodletting, but it's fairly minimal (actually, I heard some of the more violent scenes, along with some of the profanities, were removed due to issues with the censors). The acting is so-so, the dialog improvised, and the direction was actually decent. If you don't mind the fact there's so little actual story, you might find this trippy, off-beat, oddball flick fun, albeit a little boring at times.

Dark Sky Films provides an excellent looking, widescreen (1.85:1) anamorphic print on this DVD release, along with a suitable Dolby Digital 2.0 audio track. The picture exhibits some very minor flaws from time to time, but otherwise it's much better than I would have expected. As far as extras, there are English subtitles, a good commentary track featuring director Michel Levesque and co-writer David M. Kaufman, a photo gallery featuring promotional materials for the film, two radio spots, and a rough looking theatrical trailer for the movie along with one for another film called The Losers (1970). All in all an excellent release of a middling film.

  3. it's a matter of taste...........those were honest to god real hell's angels in that motorcycle gang- could you tell? the cinematographer was the same dude who shot easyrider- don't think the material was on the same level? They only had 300,000 grand to do the entire movie- so uno perhaps if they were paid a wee bit more and the schedule wasn't so tight- i suppose it coulda been better- did you know you were supposed to watch that flic on LSD......ya miss the whole damn thing without it- i missed with it- but that's an exception- oh yeah the film was based on a half-page treatment- this was not intended to be war and peace

  4. This movie sounded like it would be a lot of off-beat fun and just my style -- a bizarre blend of the horror and biker movie genres. But unfortunately I ended up kind of disappointed with the overall result.

The movie starts out promisingly enough. We find a typical motorcycle gang of the era cruisin' down the highway to the sound of a great original soundtrack (reminds me of The Band or Grateful Dead). After raising some hell at a gas station, they carouse their way to the vicinity of an isolated and mysterious cult's temple. The cult has in mind using one of the bikers' babes for some kind of strange ritual. This provides us with the coolest scene in the movie, as said mesmerized babe proceeds to give us an eyeful of her nudie snake dance, once again to the sound of the movie's fabulous soundtrack which really adds to this scene. Naturally the bikers bust in just in the nick of time to rescue her, but not before being cursed by the cultists.

Up to this point, I was quite enjoying the movie. But from here on, the movie seems to rapidly go downhill. The gang decides to head out to the desert to "get their heads together". This is when mysterious attacks of some kind of "wild animal" begin picking off members of the gang, one by one. But the pace of the movie at this point really slows right down and becomes quite tedious. It just seems to drag on and on till the inevitable ending.

And worst of all, I found this DVD's cover art quite misleading. I would like to warn you that there is actually only ONE werewolf ever seen riding a motorcycle in the entire movie, NOT a whole gang as the cover would seem to suggest. In fact, this DVD also includes commentary from the movie's writer and director, and the writer himself says that the film's whole gimmick is "you only give 'em one werewolf at the end of the movie". It seems that someone else had been considering making this movie, but was planning to give the audience a whole gang of werewolves on motorcycles. But the makers of this film felt that approach was all wrong.

I totally disagree. I think this movie would have been 100 times better with a whole gang of werewolves on motorcycles as promised on the cover. Instead I ended up feeling massively cheated and ripped off by the purposely deceiving cover art.

As usual, Blue Underground have done a superb job restoring this obscure b-classic. The picture is very fine indeed. The commentary from the writer and director is quite fun, as we find out behind-the-scenes details that really reflect the low-budget moviemaking spirit of the times (-- like how most of the cast was stoned out of their minds most of the time!) In addition, there is also a poster and still gallery.

But unfortunately it is the movie itself in this case which I found not quite up to scratch. Simply put, beyond the one really cool scene which I briefly described above, there is not much here worth seeing. I guess that's why this movie has (deservedly) remained in obscurity all these years.

Hey, now there's an idea! Instead of Hollywood wasting millions making pathetically poor remakes of great movies like it has for the past 15 years or so, why not take movies like this that had a great basic concept but poor execution, and turn them into the truly great movies they should have been?

Naw....that would make too much sense. ;)

  5. Okay, truth is I thought it'd be really cool to give this film a five star review for no other reason than that it'd give me a chance to use that spiffy one-note joke headline. Okay, it's a low-budget, drive-in quality biker movie with an especially silly premise. However, if that's what you want then it delivers. I found that after one unsuccessful attempt to watch the film I needed alcohol to make it through, but I did, and, well, you know what? Well, I'm a better person for having done so. And then I watched it again, with a friend. Truthfully, for a 1970s biker film this one wasn't bad. And the commentary track was fun too. Definitely a beer and pretzels movie, but if you're actually interested enough in this sort of film to be here reading this, well, I'd say this delivers what it promises.

  1. Does anyone know anything about this release? I have tried looking it up elsewhere and can't find any information about it. How many discs? What episodes? etc... HELP?

  2. This set includes 3 disks with 2 shows per disk, total of 6 episodes. The episodes are:

    42. Carroll Shelby Bike 1 original air date: 1/31/2005
    43. Carroll Shelby Bike 2 original air date: 2/7/2005
    44. Lincoln Mark LT Bike 1 original air date: 2/14/2005
    45. Lincoln Mark LT Bike 2 original air date: 2/21/2005
    47. Junior's Dream Bike 1 original air date: 3/7/2005
    48. Junior's Dream Bike 2 original air date: 3/14/2005

I believe these sets are privately produced by Amazon, definitely not by the Learning Channel's production company. This is a bare bones set. NO special features, not even a disk menu to choose episodes on each disk. Discovery did much better with seasons 1-3, these new sets leave much to be desired, and at $5+ per episode, the price is steep. Come on Learning/Discovery- you can do better than this!!!!!

  3. has no extra features like some of the other seasons I've gotten. Almost has a pirated feel to the quality, or lack of. You insert the disc and it just starts automatically into the episodes, no menu or anything. Feels like I should have paid some guy $5.00 from he's car trunk for it.

  4. The dvds are definitely manufactured by someone different than the first 3 seasons. The dvds are really bad in the fact that they are out of order on the disc (episode wise). I also had a disc arrive that did not even work. The best part is that the cheap producers did not use any anti-burning techniques, so you can burn / copy them all you want. Might save you some money if you don't want to pay the 30 bucks per set. I would ask around if I were you before buying.

On a good note, the show is still excellent and provides lots of entertainment. I love American Choppers. I just hope they choose a better company next time to release the dvds, just for their sake, because pirating is going to be an issue with seasons 4-5-6 (which I bought).

  1. Wow, what a ride. I think this is a must see for all Vets, both past and present. It lets all Vets know that what happened in the past will never be allowed to happen again. The film is very well done and has captured the spirit and determination of the riders and their feelings concerning our soldiers who have served their country and of the ones that are still missing. The out pouring of patriotism the riders received as they crossed this great country was very heart warming and renewed my faith in the American people. If you ride motorcycles and are a Vet or have family in the military, I highly recommend you purchase this DVD and you will not be sorry.

  2. Road to Thunder is not only a wonderful tribute to Vietnam Veterans who returned, but sends a message to Washington urging them to pursue, identify and return all POW / MIA remains from foreign soil. It reminds us of the contributions and sacrifices that have been made for FREEDOM throughout the world by members of our military, past and present. Road to Thunder portrays the heartfelt bond that exists between those brave men and women who have in some way lived and shared the experiences of war. Buy Road to Thunder. It is an historical documentary that you and generations to come will enjoy and remember.

  3. I don't fully agree with the other comments, but I do think that this is a worthwhile film to see. It's nice to not feel shouted at/talked down to while watching a documentary. A+

  4. I just wanted 2 once again say thank you 2 the team of young men and those behind the scenes who made this film happen. I will cherish this film for as long as I live, I just hope that when I am old and can't ride anymore there will still be men and women who will make this journey every year. This was truly one of the best moments of my life and i will never forget it. You guys captured real people being themselves and 2 much of television and movies don't anymore. I hope that this will be a success and you have many more in your lives.

  5. Superb! Words can't describe the emotions felt while watching this film, the joy, the sorrow, and my sincere admiration to this group of Vietnam Veterans. I started to watch it, the kids came in - and they too couldn't take their eyes off the screen. I liked how the film showed the comradely, how it said even if these Veterans never knew each other, they were brothers. I liked how it showed the heroes still living up to their devotion by assisting the victim of the car accident witnessed during their trip. I am glad and honored to have served and live in a country where POWs/MIAs are not forgotten, where peoples' sacrifices were not made in vain, and where it is evident that great people continue to believe in our founding principles.

A must see for all ages!

  1. I bought this for my father-in-law. He loves it! You will definately laugh. If you know someone that is in to motorcycles...this is an awesome gift they will love!

  2. My husband is big into motorcycles so when he suggested watching this movie I was less than enthused. I am so glad I watched it with him! It was one of the best movies I have seen in a long time!

It's about Burt Munro who travels to the US from New Zealand to race his 1920 Indian motorcycle at the salt flats. Munro hits a few snags along the way trying to get there. The whole time you're cheering him on just for him to run into another obstacle. I laughed a lot watching this movie because this man made friends so easily (and quickly) with everyone, from a transvestite to an old woman living by herself to an Indian that gives him dog balls to help with his prostate. I had a big smile on my face and the best feeling after watching this movie. I'm also really glad (as is my husband) that I got a chance to see Anthony Hopkins play a role that is more pleasant. At first all we could do was picture him in Silence of the Lambs so it was a nice change of pace.

So if you're a motorcycle fan, an Anthony Hopkins fan or just want to see a "make you feel good" inspirational movie, this is the movie for you! Enjoy!

And just to add, I rarely ever buy movies. I have to absolutely love a movie before I spend my money buying it. I'm actually going to buy this one and make my husband think I bought it for his birthday!

  3. A real surpirse. This one hit the theaters and was gone so fast I didn't have the privilege of seeing it on the big screen. Anthony Hopkins at his heartwarming best. An endearing story about a ordinary guy who has an extraordinary talent for loving life, people and engines. Hopkins travels from his home in New Zealand with steely determination to race at the salt flats in California. He meets a long string of wonderful people all of whom are only too happy to help him through the day. The movie is a study, albeit a bit Pollyanna, of the best of humanity's children. A great story, don't let this surprise pass you by. I'll watch it over and over.

  4. This is a classic - and even better now in Blu-Ray! Anthony Hopkins in one of his best roles! You will cheer for him until the end!

  5. This is one of the best movies ever as are most "true stories". It shows what determination can accomplish!

  1. If you watched CHiP's for years waiting for Ponch to pull his gun or drop the "F" bomb, then this may be your movie. Filled with 80's, early 90's cheese; compleate with girl band montages and female wrestlers in tiny swim suits. About a biker who kills a dirty cop and then leaves to protect the gang, only to be framed by the dead cops partner who turns the gang against him. If you love B biker movies this will be right up your alley. If you are looking for a movie with sceans of vintage bikes this is not your movie as there are only scant shots of near modern day Evo's. Over all not a bad flick for your biker movie collection, with an ending only slightly better than "Hells Angles on Wheels".

  2. What can I say? It's just one of those 'bikerflicks' with a lot of shooting and violence. It's still amusing though, but not very believable, especcialy the fact that the main character stays alive when his whole trailer is filled with lead! But there are much worse movies.

  3. Ok I love cheesy biker B movie flicks and I didn't like this one, they were giving away a free dvd, a few to choose from and this one sounded best, with a purchase of another at a cd shop or I wouldn't have got it, Estrada just doesn't do the bad guy very well he was in the gang but decideds to leave for the good of the team all happy and grown up about it he starts the movie trying to rob/recover money from a drug deal gone bad then killing a guy and then right after it's like his character is total mister nice guy, then many bad things happen and mister nice guy gets angry? I like cheesy and all but this was too much if you're a teenage guy you will like the women in tight clothes fighting and so on but otherwise don't buy this movie, I'm just glad I got mine free.
