4 comments about Pictorial History of Japanese Motorcycles.
  1. I bought this book because of the cover photograph. The book does an adequte job of describing the history of Japanese motorcycles. The author clearly writes from a European point of view (which is fine). I would definitely buy the book again and I have recommended it to others.

  2. A terrific history of the japanese motorcycle. The book focuses on the historically important bikes that made a major impact to the world of motorcycling. Explains not only technical specifics but the war that was going on between manufacturers as the sport of motorcycling grew. The only fault is that offroad bikes are largely ignored. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of the motorcyle.

  3. I highly recommend this book for those of us who would not by a Harley in the 1970's. Since buying and reading this book I have went out and purchased two Kawasaki KZ 1300's. The book was right on with what the Kawi can do. I plan on picking up more "classic collectable bikes" which are outlined in this book. Thanks Cornelius for all your hard work. Great book

  4. I thoroughly enjoyed Cornelius labour of love. His European perspective enlightens the North American reader on the global motorcycle marketplace. He reveals why models were more successful in certain markets. Read between the lines, and you will quickly see factories dumping inventories of unsuccessful products in other countries.

I particularly liked the chapter on the 1973 Yamaha TX750, as I had owned one of these bikes from 73~76. Cornelious provides an up-to-date account of Yamaha's long abandoned child. It was market flop when rider's wanted four cylinder bikes, not parallel twins. He fairly represents both the TX750's technical advances and its flaws. As Cornelius owns a high mileage example of this bike, he provides the reasons why the TX750 deserves respect today as a touring motorcycle.

This book encouraged me to recently buy a 30 year old classic Japanese motorcycle, the TX750 Yamaha, to restore and ride, and I am enjoying this bike immensely.

I hope you find your own favourite road machine in this book, and enjoy the entertaining story behind it.

2 comments about Norton.
  1. I enjoyed the book. However, I did find that the impressive coverage of Norton's illustrious racing history came at the expense of the technical and corporate history. Some may not find this a fault, but I was looking for more information on production models. And there simply wasn't enough mention of the twins with which us Yanks are most familiar (I can't afford a Manx but a Commando is a possibility...) If you are a fan of the singles that made Norton a great name in motorsports, you will like this book. It is well written and informative.

  2. This provides a good history of Norton motorcycles and their racing history with a fantastic collection of photographs.

2 comments about Aermacchi: Harley-Davidson Motorcycles (Enthusiasts Series).
  1. The prolific Mr Walker has produced a bevy of Motorcycle books. This one, covering the Aermacchi / Harley-Davidson lightweights. I call it an Arm Chair book because I doubt if Mr. Walker got out of his Arm Chair to put it together. It has the usual history and pictures all gleaned from factory archives. Good photos from friends and racers. It is certainly a Euro book. As Mr. Walker's main focus is roadracing. In the USA the Sprint 250 CRS was used as a Flat track racer, and most Ameicans know it as such. There is not even a photo of a CRS in the book. Sadly ,there was no research done on the American side save a few H-D motor company brochure reprints. If you are a Euro roadracing fan, its a pretty good book.

  2. Of most interest to me was that this book has some information about Lino Tonti's involvement with Aermacchi. Between this book and the Moto Guzzi Lemans book by Ian Falloon, and maybe a few articles on the net you can piece together Tonti's career. Tonti made a huge impact on both Aermacchi and Moto Guzzi. Aermacchi = Harley Sprint BTW in case you for some reason didn't know. Harley did a deal with Aermacchi to market their wonderful singles in the U.S, etc. These bikes were sold in the U.S. at Harley Dealers from around 1961-1974. By the way... my favorite model is the 250cc C model. Many like the 250cc H model. Probably anyone [except my wife perhaps] would like to have one of the racier Italian models! And don't forget the 'before it's time' full-bodied mono-shock absorber Chimera from 1960! Every model of Aermacchi imaginable is covered in this book. The pictures are in color and are too cool. In fact I'm going to go thumb through it for a half hour or so right now...
