  1. This book has a few nice colour photos and some old advertising posters. While it does give a very concise summary of the companies history it is overly full of engine specifications and is repetitive.

  2. The book is nice, but the "The Complete Story" is rather thin, if you have old motorcycles as hobbies. And with the title "The Complete Story", I would have expected more pages about the pre-war period. I also miss hard facts like lists with frame&engine numbers, production years for different models etc.

  3. My husband loved it. He owns a 60's model Royal Enfield and just recently restored it -- so it was a perfect gift for him.

3 comments about Monks and Motorcycles: From Laos to London by the Seat of my Pants 1956-1958.
  1. This book captivates a sense of adventure and transformation from the `every day' life into the enchantment of what can be. Each chapter fits as almost complete stories, which allows the power of events to happen at a timely pace. Normally, I read several hundred pages, for this type of genre, in a few hours. Monk's and Motorcycles is the sort of book that lends itself to reading a chapter at time. The author's ideas leave `food for thought.' This book reflects a sincere person who's able to convey how his life is today as it stands, partly, on the `shoulders of the lessons learned in the time that this story takes place.

  2. When I finished reading Franklin Huffman's travelogue--with a whole section of interesting pictures, albeit a bit faded and just black-and-white--the first thought that came to my mind was: It is hard these days to conceive of a young American traveling as freely through the world, particularly in Asia, as this author (also well-known linguist and accomplished diplomat) did in the fifties. All the more reason to do it vicariously, by reading it, chapter by chapter, one more interestig than the other, and enjoying funny happenings, cross-cultural misunderstandings, lessons in ethnolinguistics, and lots of geography--the last maybe more needed now than ever. The style is direct and highly accessible; the lessons are far-ranging and memorable. For the impatient reader: Each chapter can be read separately, like a short-story taking place in a different place.

  3. Monks and Motorcycles is unlike any other book I've read, before or since. A fascinating account of an unforgettable adventure across Southeast Asia and beyond, Monks and Motorcycles challenges readers to think that breath taking experiences the world over are just a motor cycle ride away. Masterfully written and powerfully affecting, Monks and Motorcycles is a gift to dreamers and travelers alike! Don't let it pass you by.

  1. As of January 1, 2001, this book is available again, and shipping from our stock within 24 hours of receipt of order.

I'd like to personally thank everyone for their patience, and the waiting is now over!

    No price increase, either!

(And of course I rated it five stars, I had to rate it something or the server wouldn't take the message.)

  2. I read a friend's grease smudged copy a few years back and decided this was one of the greatest bike books ever written. I have been trying to find my very own copy ever since. Thank you for re-releasing it.

4 comments about Vespa: An Illustrated Story.
  1. That's a great looking book with very interesting B&W pictures. Not much text but the essential nonetheless and every picture has a detailed informative legend (96 pages). But important: THIS BOOK COVERS "DOUGLAS" (MADE IN THE UK) VESPA HISTORY ONLY. A "must have", I think.

  2. For those who don't know of Eric Brockway- this man was not only the honorary vespa club of Britain president for many years (sadly passed away but not forgotten!) he was also managing director of Douglas motorcycles during the years they imported and built Vespas in Bristol. Eric knew more about vespa (pre p-range and after) than anyone I've ever met or heard of- a lovely man with a wealth of hands-on experience. The book is well worth the price and no Vespa (or motorcycle/motor-scooter) book collection would be complete without it.

  3. The title of the book is decieving for while the archival pictures are quiant, this is not a diffinative historical picture filled book on the Vespa. It's a pictorial book about the Douglas Motorcycle companies relationship with Vespa, nothing else. There are basic attempts to detail what happened in the two companies history and the models that were produced but it isn't what the title makes it out to be. Buy it if you just want to know more triva, not for hard core data like you would want to know on specific models Vespa made and when they made them.

  4. This really is a great book with wonderful pictures. The title is very misleading in terms that it is in no way a definitive history of Vespa.

It is however a very valuable resource on the Vespa in the UK and Douglas motorcycles. If you already have an interest and other resources on the Vespa history at large, and a passing interest in the socio-economic conditions in the UK in relation to the rise and fall of British motorcycle companies (a stretch, but I certainly do), the book is a must have.

Some time is spent on the earlier Vespa clubs in the late 40s and early 50s, as well as detailed information on UK-only modifications and offerings well into the 1960s. Several pictures offer insight into Vespa production facilities and methods.

  1. For anyone who enjoys one or more of off-the-beaten-track travel, motorcycle riding or following a crazy Australian around, this is a must read book. Adrian is a witty and compelling story teller whose descriptions of the remote places he visited and the characters he met very real and intensely readable.

  2. For a first book, Adrian Scotts travelogue is remarkably well written. It takes the reader along with him as he travels from the furthest reaches of Siberia to Europe, Via China and Central Asia. In the wake of rapidly growing global interest in independant travel by motorcycle, Adrian sets off for his first long distance interenational bike adventure with just a few vague ideas about how it may go. On the way he discoveres the real people and real hospitality of people living along his path.

Its a fun read for anyone with an interest in independant travel, an excellent read for anyone with an interest in the the former USSR, and a compulsory read for anyonne contemplating a first major motorcycle adventure.

  3. As this adventure story was written by a fellow Aussie, and the bike used was a pre-2008 KLR650 (I have one), I simply had to get this book. It describes quite an epic and gutsy solo adventure, and I'm sure the author would be the first to agree he couldn't have completed the journey without meeting many wonderful and helpful people along the way. It's a great read, although I found that adjectives were overused in the narrative in a way that grated after a while. Don't expect many pictures, and don't expect much motorcycling tech talk at all. It's basically a great travelogue rather than a motorcycling how-to. Basically his bike is a means to an end (independent transport), not a much-loved machine; however it's still a great read if you understand this context when purchasing. Enjoy!

  1. This was a gift to a friend who restores Cushman scooters, he was very happy to receive a book that had several pictures & articles concerning Cushman scooters. He was so pleased with this book, he showed it to several of his "scooter friends" & they are also going to buy it!

  2. Like OddScoots? You know, the ones that vintage Vespa and Lambretta owners don't even recognise? This book will help you identify those oddities. It's not a repair guide, buyers guide, or how to book, it's a Spotter's Guide. The information about these scoots is scarce, and where a lot of info exists, they have it here, but if the odd scoot you're looking is one of the oddest, there won't be much info, but something is better than nothing, and without this book and one or two others, that's what you'd have. Add it to your collection and quitcherbitchin.

  1. Especially LOTS of great colour photos, including ones of various models with some specifications (up to modern models), and extracts from vintage Vespa calendars and advertising as well as photos of muddy messy scooter scrambling! The text is also very interesting and gives a history of the development of the Vespa scooter. The only thing I did not like about it was the use of American spelling (it's an Italian book), but I coped with that. I think anyone who has a Vespa should own this book (I have two Vespas).
