1 comments about Motorcycle Workshop Practice Manual (Haynes Manuals).
  1. I've been wrenching my own bike for about 2 years now and I have found the Haynes series in general to be extremely helpful in aiding my mechanical endeavors. The workshop Practice techbook is a step up from the basics and is full of excellent information if you want to go beyond just changing your oil and lubing your chain. Fidell gives a good description of the more obscure and common tools of the trade and their application in the world of motorcycles. In addition, if you have the space and want to set up your own shop he gives a good list of what you are going to need. If you want to learn more about the inner workings of your bike and what it takes to service it you should get this book.

2 comments about Motorcycle Road & Racing Chassis: A Modern Review of the Best Independents.
  1. being an engineer and fan of custom sport bike chassis, I read this book with great anticipation. As a pictoral and light history of the covered companies, the book succeeds. As a detailed reference book, or a book that would provide any kind of in-depth technical detail, I was sorely disapointed.
The book is well illustrated, and the author provides some insight into the different companies, but I consider it a light brushing rather than a thorough look at each.
Also, contrary to the publisher's description, I did not find any "full specifications" for ANY chassis, and only a general specification for P&M chassis. Additionally, although the book has a first printing in November 2007, most chapter references seem to predate 2001 except brief paragraph notes at the end of some chapters telling if the company is still in business or not.
I was also disapointed to find that other than a printed ad in the back of the book, there were no names, addresses, web sites, or phone #'s for any of the 15 companies included.
As an interesting quick look at the companies, the book succeeds. As a detailed reference for someone looking for "a valuable refference for the trade" the book is mediocre at best.
I would buy the book from the understanding that it is written with the depth of a magazine article rather than an in-depth textbook on the history of the companies involved.
I hate to sound harsh in reviewing the book, but I have to give the book a C+.

  2. The book is visually appealing, with high quality paper stock and some great photographs of handcrafted manchines. The book's written content suffers by comparison; there is too much filler in the form of engine specifications (how is this relevant in a book dedicated to chassis design/construction?), not enough content related to chassis specifications or construction, and some grievous editing errors. I would also have liked to learn more about the men who built/build these machines, the stories behind the bikes, but I can't necessarily count this as a fault, as the title hasn't strictly promised this. I don't regret buying it, but I have a more than casual interest in chassis design.

  1. This book is more like a motorcycle's manual for dummies and had instructions and illustrations which could allow ME to work on my bike.

  1. Good basic guidance to repair and maintenance of a wide variety of R bikes. Even includes obscure R65-specific material.

  2. Buy the Clymer manual instead: it is far more comprehensive and much better illustrated. The modest extra cost is well worth paying!

  3. I purchased this book for my husband. He believes this is a great book for anyone that owns a BMW Twin Motorcycle to add to your collection for any work you might want to do on your own bike.

  1. What do you expect? It is a comprehensive overview of these model bikes. Covers in depth information, but I wanted it for basic maintainence. Unless you are MacGyver, this is good for oil changes, chain maintanence and other basics. Otherwise, you can figure out how to turn your ZX-7R into a mini-submarine.

  2. It is a good manual. But it does not go in to detail on my 2002 ZX9R.

  1. It has taken me close to a year to write this, cause the proof is in the pudding.I know I have done everything short of capital crimes, to get the information this fellow is GIVING you for a mere fifty dollars. From A to Z Kirk gives you ALL. I have restored pans for 20 years,Kirk my hats off to you an all who helped AAAAA+++. This is the book. I have had my nose in an out of it since it arrived.I have found everything to be right on the money. I know that`s the stuff that makes it best. The Truth. this is what it`s all about.Kirt THANK-YOU

  2. I am looking into buying a Pan, and searching for more than anecdotal information. This book is the best source of Pan info I have read so far. It helped me realize that a Pan wasn't the best choice, and that I would need to spend a lot of time wrenching, instead of riding.

I wish they'd write one for Shovelheads!!

  3. This book is lacking in some important areas. No carburetors, no transmissions, no brakes. Need to know how to adjust your mousetrap, change springs on a springer, or fix a leak on your hydraulic front end? You won't find it in this book. The topics it does cover are great, easy to understand, and well detailed. The bottom line is I do use this book and it has become a permanent part of my shop library.

  4. I'll keep this short and to the point. As the title says, this is the best "tool" I have in my tool chest. The information in this book has helped me more times then I can recollect. The book is written from a practical perspective and isn't full of theoretical "how to". It even includes descriptions of how to make some of the special tools you'll need from items you probably have laying around your shop. I can't wait for Vol. 2!

  1. Great manual for someone who wants to get to know the inner workings of their bike. Good information on completing your own maintenence.

  2. A very specific manual for the bike I own. It is not like others that pretend to explain everything on too wide ranges, like saying a single manual explaining H-D 1903-2003 models.
Very detailed and comprehensive. A must to own for those H-D bike owners.

  3. The Clymer HD manual was a huge disapointment the photos are not clear and the information and service directions are both unclear and incomplete. I would not purchase this manual as an HD repair manual again.
