5 comments about Wild Ride.
  1. Best is the 14 or so pages on how "Dr." Hunter S Thompson got offer to write first 'book' on Hell's Angel's,truly from their perspective,(not police blotter reports).Outrageous mixer at Ken Kesey's ranch with Neal Cassady,(Dean Moriarty of "On the Road")..Gordon Alpert,LSD proponent,(now Dam Rass)..&music by for runner of Grateful Dead band. Will be adopted as collateral read for "deviant sub-cultures" & "americana folklore",an Easy-& enjoyable ride/

  2. Unfortunately, the author of "Wild Ride" did not take the time to learn anything about motorcycles and exhibits little more knowledge about motorcyclists. From the first page, he tosses out arcane technical observations without knowing the meaning of the terms. Reference after reference is made to both bikes and riders with no regard to substantiation for, had the author cared to verify his material, he would quickly discovered the information he cites is erroneous. I will admit that I did not read the entire book. After the dismay of crawling through the first couple of chapters, I checked random parts of the rest of the material only to discover more of the same. My bookshelf is heavy with books about motorcycling. I have four decades of riding experience, many of those years astride Harley-Davidsons. I know that my reaction to the author's misinformation is not picking at nits, it's an observation of careless journalism. Two thumbs down...

  3. Very little new information. You won't find much in this book that hasn't been written elsewhere numerous times. Author also has some sort of vendetta for off road motorcycling. He really needs to research his sources better to avoid such pitfalls. Should have checked this out of the library, but they didn't have it.

  4. Hunter Thompson's much beloved bible 'bout the Angels, and them like 'em, and those that wannabe, is a ... hard act to follow. But I truly liked this book. Unlike a lot of the other books out there on the subject, which are just "retreads" (sorry 'bout that) of what we've all read and seen before, this effort actually brings us up-to-date. And it does it in a matter-of-fact, objective, but very readable way. In too many books about the "Outlaw Biker/Culture," the author gets in the way - trying to impress us with his, or her keen observations. Mr. Reynolds just lets the subject/subjects speak for themselves, and that to me made it all the more interesting. I've been riding since I was 14, and readin' even longer - and I highly reccomend this book

  5. Read this book recommended by a biker and being a woman did not want to however very good, for me, historical journey. Who cares about a biker club's beginning or past? Now I do thanks to Reynolds. Knowing about this American sub-culture's beginnings helps very much to understand from a psychological point of view. Technical info about the mechanical horse is frivolous and unnecessary compared to the characters en pointe and the facts that tell the story are verity. I'd like to see Trash's story unfold on film one day ...

2 comments about The Field & Stream All-Terrain Vehicle Handbook, Updated and Revised: The Complete Guide to Owning and Maintaining an ATV (Field & Stream).
  1. AS SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN OUT OF THE SPORT FOR 10 YEARS AND LOOKING TO GET BACK IN, I BOUGHT THIS BOOK EXPECTING MORE. THE BOOK STARTS OUT WITH A GOOD HISTORY OF THE 3 WHEELED ATV, BUT DOESN'T ELABORATE TOO MUCH ON QUADS. (WHAT ABOUT THE MID 80'S SUZUKI'S - QUAD SPORT/QUAD RACER?) ANOTHER DOWN FALL OF THE BOOK IS THAT IT STRONGLY FOCUSES ON UTILITY ATV'S AND RARELY MENTIONS SPORT MODELS. AS FAR AS THE MAINTENANCE SECTION OF THE BOOK... IT ....

  2. This guide promised more but didn't deliver. Great introduction to 3-wheelers but very little on sport quads. The utility quad stuff was more of a rehash which left me very disappointed. Don't look here if you want maintenance info, check your owners manual or ask another rider you'll get more than this book delivers.

5 comments about Reluctant Runaway (To Catch a Thief Series #2).

  1. Part action packed who-done-what and part romantic suspense, I found myself sucked into Reluctant Runaway. I didn't meet the crime fighting duo of Desi and Tony in the Reluctant Burglar but Nelson did a great job at sharing enough details of the first book without oversharing and intruding on the story at hand.

Several amusing scenes interspersed with cliffhangers made the read roller coasty. Forgiveness is a huge spiritual theme as is discernment and the danger of tiny shifts in the Gospel message.

If you enjoyed book one in the series, you're going to want to get your hands on Reluctant Runaway as soon as possible. If you like romantic suspense, strong female leads and sassy talk -- you'll likely enjoy this novel.

  2. Security expert Desiree Jacobs' friend and business associate Maxine has a problem. Max's niece is missing. Kidnapping victim or a runaway? No one knows, but it seems everyone has an opinion. The niece also works for a museum that was recently robbed of priceless items. Right before the niece's disappearance. Now things are getting worse. Desi has to step in and help. But wait! She's promised her FBI boyfriend Tony that she won't get involved in such things anymore. But she has to, right? This is her friend we're talking about. And when Desi and Tony's individual cases collide sparks aplenty fly.

If you'll pardon the obvious pun, I was reluctant to read this novel which is book two in the series. See, I'm ashamed to say I hadn't read book one. And Jill Nelson is my pal. Oh I'd read a chapter of book one that was posted to her website once. That was enough to convince me she was a good writer. I knew that. I've been swamped with books that I had to read. It seems there's never an end sometimes. Oh the horrors! :-)

The opportunity came for me to read book two, Reluctant Runaway. As a member of Christian Fiction Blog Alliance we're plugging this novel this week. I received a copy of it to read a review. So glad I did. And the fact that it was the second in a series never tripped me up. Jill's sprinkles enough backstory to set you at ease with the characters, all the while taking you on a thrill ride like no theme park you've ever been to.

It was a pleasure to read this novel. Jill's writing is tight and easy to read. Her characters are engaging and endearing. And the cliff hangers at some of the chapters! Shesh! I was already to put the book down for a while at one point to do some other things and then a gun went off at the end of the chapter. Ack! Who's dead? I couldn't stop reading there. Nuh uh. :-)

Now I'm looking forward to going back in time and reading book one in the To Catch A Thief series, Reluctant Burglar. And then there's the upcoming book three, Reluctant Smuggler.

    Can't wait!

  3. Okay, cheesy title for this review, I know - but guys, this was a super fun read! I liked it even better than the first in this series, and I didn't think that would happen! Jill Nelson has somehow managed to create a book that is at the same time fun and serious, intense and light, funny and shocking...what a combo! My favorite part of Jill's books are by far the characters - so realistic. They crack me up, yet two pages later, they have me tearing up.

    Job well done, Jill.

As for the rest of you - check out this series ASAP! You won't regret it!

  4. In this engaging sequel to Reluctant Burglar, museum security expert Desiree Jacobs, once again becomes drawn into a mystery when Max's niece goes missing. Could her disappearance have anything to do with Tony's organized crime case? As their romance heats up, so does the trail that leads to stolen artifacts, leading them both to the New Mexico dessert. They must learn to trust God, not only with their surmounting dangers, but with their romance. Is it possible that this new religious cult, is at the center of these mysteries?
As in Reluctant Burglar, Jill Nelson has once again masterfully weaved a tale of suspense and drama while demonstrating the power of faith to overcome the worst of our fears and obstacles. As the romance develops between Desiree and Tony, an FBI agent, the reader is shown the hand of God in even this, our most intimate of human relationships. Is it possible for these two, an over-protective cop and an independent, sometimes risk-taker security expert, to find a peaceful coexistence in which their love can blossom?
Although the plot can be read independently from the book's forerunner, Reluctant Runaway, has achieved the best of sequel writing. Not only has the author improved on her story telling techniques, but has added depth and challenge to an all-ready intriguing story. Very enjoyable read.

  5. In her novels Jill Nelson has a way of simplifying some of the most prickly issues Christians face today. One of my favorite scenes in her latest novel, The Reluctant Runaway, involves the heroine, Desiree Jacobs and her Native American kidnapper, Pete Cheama, a member of the Zuni tribe. Pete has made plenty of bad choices in his life, and he ultimately blames his mistakes on Christians, whose system "was forced upon [his] people centuries ago and has made [their] spirits weak and [their] minds confused." No Christian wants to feel her faith has weakened or confused anyone, so sometimes we refrain from even discussing Christianity. But Desiree merely responds, "Jesus is not an oppressor." Right there, concisely--the difference between true Christianity and any faith that demands, rather than invites.

Nelson's novel is a fun read, with plenty of suspense and action (and some clever romance, to boot). You could enjoy the entire reading experience without stopping to focus on the choice tidbits about faith with which she occasionally peppers the story. But those tidbits deepen the novel and make it stay with you well after you finish the last page. I'd recommend Reluctant Runaway for teen-through-adult readers.

4 comments about Well Made in America: Lessons from Harley-Davidson on Being the Best.
  1. This book is OK (the last section is the best, in my opinion), but suffers from two problems: it seems to jump around alot and it is also pretty much a fluff piece.

The book starts out trying to describe the management changes that occured at HD, then spends many pages discussing the various finance issues that came up when the management bought HD from it's parent company, then goes into sales issues then back to management issues. So, is this supposed to be a historical record or a management book? It does not devote enough time to either topic to do either subject justice.

Also, this book is in my opinion a fluff piece. All of H-D's strengths are glorified while their weaknesses are rationalized away by saying that "everyone does it" (ex, H-D's earlier management was bad, but so was every other US company's).

The last section on how to implement these changes into your company is good. If the rest of the book was written in this format it would have been much better.

  2. This is an excellent story told in easy to read fashion. It details the comeback company of the 1990's if you ask me; Harley Davidson is. I've read it 2 times and working on the third time now. I'm not a business major since the book is business classified. I just Love Harley Davidson and read all I can about this wonder.

  3. This is an excellant example of a company that was near bankruptcy and able to pull itself together, reinvent itself, and again is a world class company. Many of the things that transpired with Harley can be subsituted into our business today. The culture of Harley is so unique that many people have the Harley Logo tatooed on their bodies! This is one of the best American business success stories I have read. Many ideas that were used to regain market share would help alot of manufacturing companies today if they follow a similar path as the Harley Execs did. In my oponion, Harley is right up there with baseball and apple pie. This story translates what people can accomplish when they have common goals.

  4. This book gives an excellent glimpse into a company that committed most of the mistakes typical American companies make and found themselves in the same financial straits. But rather than giving in to a me-too attitude of trying to provide an inferior product with cheap foreign labor and cost cutting at every turn, they instead did things the American way - reconnecting with their customer base and creating a unique product that customers were proud to own.

Any company that deals with American consumers ought to have this book on the desk of every manager in the company.

  1. Handy book to have around when you want to work on your quad. Lots of pictures and details that make simple tasks much easier. It does leave out some steps (at least I think so) on the more complex projects, but I think if you're going to do an engine teardown you'd probably want the Honda service manual instead. Lots of handy conversions and details about the specific Honda ATV.

This is a good suppliment to the owners manual as it goes into much more detail about how to do the things most owners wouldn't want to pay the dealer to do.

  1. I really enjoyed this book. It is easy reading and gives the reader and comprehensive overview of Triumph's influence in the U.S. I am considering either a 98 Thunderbird or an older Bonneville. Great reading!!

  2. Provides the descriptive timeline from the introduction of Triumph in America to present day. Great book for the novice or expert Triumph aficionado. I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

  3. Lindsay Brooke has written the best book I've ever read on the passion, the guts and the glory that was the Triumph story. Seamless weaving anecdote and accolade, he has produced a masterwork. Sitting in bed well after midnight, papercuts covering my fingers, lips chapped from reading, I simply couldn't put it down.

  4. I have read just about every book the covers the history and detail of Triumph motorcycles, and this book is the best I have seen. When you consider the unique marketing of the US distributors and the American concept of what a great motorcycle should be this is a must read for anyone working on a Triumph in the US. Detailed, colorful, and well written, with plenty of reference photos it is the guide for the restorer or anyone seeking to understand the the role Triumph played in making this a nation of motorcycle riders.

  5. I bought my first copy of this book while restoring a 1967 Bonneville T120R back in 1994. What first attracted me to it was the front cover of the 67 T120TT - the very same year and colors of the bike I was going thru, (except for being the TT version).

Having owned 7 Bonnevilles and Tiger 110's over the decades, including three pre-units and two duplex frame bikes and been a Triumph junkie since 1968, this book still taught me things I never knew about Triumph and especially the invaluable influence of Johnson Motors that contributed so much to the success of the bikes.

Strongly recommended if you want to get your history right on this most famous era of Triumph.
