1 comments about How to Draw Choppers Like a Pro (Motorbooks Studio).
  1. This book is perfect for an entry level artist as well as someone who has been drawing for some time. I've been sketching choppers for a long time, more seriously in the last few years, and I'm thrilled to see how much this has to offer me in the way of disciplining my process.

It also covers the basics such as perspective, bike construction, and other aspects that are of value to anyone interested in drawing bikes. This is true for the fine artist/painter, the cartoonist, or the enthusiast who wants to develop a hobby in drawing bikes.

  1. Enjoyed the book and the tips and advice offered. It definitely plants the seeds of touring across the country which is my ultimate goal. This book also inspires creativity on a higher level and eliminates impossibility.

  2. This is a great book if you are interested in Motorcycle touring. It also give a great introduction into the world of Long Distance riding. I highly recommend it!

  3. As an additioal post comment to my review. As I have begun to get more involved in Long Distance Riding this book has increased in value to me. It is a common book that I carry with me on all my trips to open and reread areas to remind me of things I need to improve and ideas on better approaches. If I could I would bump my rating to a 5 star now for those that want to get serious about Long Distance Riding.

  4. Very informative book on long distance riding, I picked up a lot of useful information from the book.

  5. Greatbook. Covers it all without unnecessary fluff. Used it to help prepare for my 4 corners of South Korea and the advice it provided made all the difference.

  1. more than onehundred pages of motorcycle history, culture and sport, hundreds of high quality pictures with more history on specific makes & models. this book 'll look very "chic" on your coffeetable. . must be the finest in it's kind. ( & at 1/2 the expo price. .)

  2. This book contains a good overview of motorcycling history, but its claims to fame are the wonderful photography and the high production values with which it was printed. It is a wonder to think that the photos are of bikes that actually exist today.

If you are searching for something to give to a person you know who enjoys riding motorcycles, who used to ride or who dreams of one day riding this is a can't miss gift. I received my copy as a gift two years ago, and I still enjoying reading it.

  3. Museums, exhibits and the books devolving from them only hint at the mysteries they purport to show but rarely reveal. This is particularly true of exhibits of things that move, whether airplanes, cars and motorcycles on one hand, or people on the other. Once mummified via restoration and encapsulated in historical review, these lively subjects lose their kinesthetic value and become dessicated.
Within the limitations of those realities, here is a book that is endlessly fascinating and pleasing, replete with photos that while technically excellent are for the most part static and thus devoid of context. The essays, although pleasant, lack edge and passion, thus failing to evoke the adrenal glands (which operate at high levels when pushing a motorcycle to the limit).
The descriptions of the machines, from knowledgeable masters such as Kevin Cameron, capture the essence of what the designer tried to do and how well he (no known female motorcycle designers, but correct me if I'm wrong) hit his target.
This is a book to which one can return again and again with pleasure. For a rider who has survived (I confess, in context, that I'm the survivor of 1.6m miles on two wheels) and ridden any of these wondrous devices, the book is a channel back in time that the book conveys magnificently.
It is to the credit of the Guggenheim and the sponsors, such as BMW, that the show/book could be produced and could demonstrate to a wide public the fascination of motorcycles and riding them.
Even non-riders, who have seen motorcycles on the road or who may know motorcycle enthusiasts, will start to comprehend the addictive fascination that possesses riders who can't stop. If you are persuaded to ride, please wear the best gear you can afford, get training and realize that roadcraft only comes from mileage undertaken humbly but decisively, the kinesthetic realities no book, however good, can convey.

  4. This is a nice "coffee table" book about their recent exhibit. As a rider since '59, I couldn't wait to get into the text, which is divided by time periods.
Alas, the print is a super thin, "artsy" typeface, very faint and grey colored- not a rich, easy to read, black Courier, for example. And the white space is excessive; they could have increased the typeface size by 4 or 5 points and still have more than enough border on each page!
Conclusion- a fine book marred by it's designers to make it less readable and useable!

  5. This book is a must have for the serious motorcyclist who wants to somehow broaden her two wheel horizon. It is also a very stylish reminder that many innovations are 60 year old ones. While pictures are of high quality and the prints very good, I can only regret that this particular selection of motorcycles may be seen by some as The ultimate bike park. It is not! A true exhibition catalog, the book remains unique: I do not know of any other printed material of this quality, show-casing motorcycles in this manner.

5 comments about Philosophical Ridings: Motorcycles and the Meaning of Life.
  1. This book wasn't quite what I was expecting. It is very intelectualized. It would probably be great for somebody that is actually studying philosophy at a higher level.

  2. ...specifically that part about "philosophy on a higher level" I didn't find any philosophy of a higher level, and the lower level exercises of logic I did find were pretty uninspiring and painfully overly wordy (which is really bad considering how short this book actually is - from a pagecount i mean), but what kind of motorcycling insight can be expected from someone who's first bike was a Ducati Monster?

It's a great read if you want to read endless words explaining why a motorbike rider thinks that speed limit laws are not logically justified, and why motorcyclists shouldn't be forced to wear helmets, but if you seek anything fresh or insightful you won't find it in this read. It's just a whole lot of words explaining some logic behind the simple philosophical concepts.

Uninspiring, endless words, lacking the philisophical insights you'd expect from a book on philosophy, very boring.

I am also reading Peter Egan's book 'leanings' which is kind of the antithesis of this, and although it's not at all a philosophy book, I'm left with the feeling that it contains far greater philosophical depth from a man with genuine experience and insight. But the philosophy is merely suggested and it's set in an entertaining romantic/nostalgic light - like i said...it's the antithesis of this book.

  3. Craig Bourne can be very good as a lecturer in philosophy at Cambridge. I can imagine him very well composing the book because he also has a motorcycle but not because he is extremely riding it. The book is like a compilation of observations with philosophical references from Descartes to Wittgenstein and Pirsig while the motorcycle was parked at the side of the road. Among experiences like reading, observing, thinking, and watching movies, I think riding motorcycles is not a prior issue for Bourne. It could be acceptable if the book was not misleading you from the title to the photograph on the cover.

  4. Wish I had read these reviews before wasting my $ and time on this pompous academic drivel.

  5. This book has nothing to do with motorcycling or riding except the occasional mention of both. Mostly just 'Philosophical Ramblings' on a basic level. Hard to believe the author's credentials.

  1. My Daughter wanted to buy this book for my husbands birthday. He is the Service Manager at the local motorcycle dealer in town. My husband and the owner of the store were astounded by the details of not just the bikes in general, but in which the drawings portrayed for each paticular make of bike. My husband very much liked the idea of the briefs under the drawing about the particular bike displayed. Infact my husband likes this book so much he is keeping it as a collectors item. He made perfectly clear that he had no intentions of making one mark in such a beautiful work of art. Thankyou so much for such a wonderful gift for a very special person. Sincerely, Eileen A. Caprio

  2. Okay, liseten up ladys...this book tot me how to ski!!! My friends are very proud of me and my mom says, "Dude, your one coolest kid and your my favorite kid ever!!!!" Best book ever go out and get it!!!

  3. My son loves this book which he got from his grandpa for Christmas. He is 5 and autistic and LOVES motorcycles. This keeps him engaged for at least an hour. I now need to purchase another one because he has colored his first one already. I do wish the writing was bigger and a little easier to read to younger children, but otherwise a great coloring book for those kids who love motorcycles.

  4. I don't know much about motorcycles but my husband is really into them and he likes this color book; it's a way for him to relax and stay busy at the same time.
