1 comments about Encycleopedia (Encycleopedia: The International Buyer's Guide to Alternatives in Cycling).
  1. As a "newbie" (someone new to alternative biking) I found this book fascinating, easy to understand, most informative, and full of fresh and new ideas. For example, I'd been stationed in Saigon once upon a time and wondered if I could ever buy a "dong wagon" (pedicab, a peddle-powered rickshaw). According to this book, not only could I do that, but it tells me how much, where, and how to get more information. (Okay, so you've never lusted after a dong wagon . . . there's more!) Various human-powered vehicles (hpv) are listed by groups, then individual products with photographs and text that are relevant, helpful, and beautifully illustrated and typeset. Catalog publishers would do well to study this book; the typesetter, desk top publisher, and graphic artist in me thrilled to the care and expertise shown throughout. Short biographical sketches of riders and makers spice the text, such as the story of Peter Carruthers, a spinal injury victim, who won a gold medal at the 1988 Seoul Paralympics and founded Bromakin Wheelchairs, makers of competition wheelchairs and hand-drive tricycles. Lest you think of tricycles as only the little bit you rode as a toddler, enCycleopedia (the proper spelling, not to suggest a typo in the Amazon copy of course) describes the Burrows Windcheetah (and its interesting makers, the Seat of the Pants Company), raced, and ridden to "set the British 'End-to-End' record from Lands End to John O'Groats at 41 hours and 4 minutes. The same rider, Andy Wilkinson, had set the previous record a few years earlier on a conventional bike-four hours slower" (p. 87). enCycleopedia is chock full of such vignettes that humanize cycling. The publishers also publish Bike Culture Quarterly (BCQ), and enCycleopedia devotes some pages to the BCQ sort of "forum for new ideas in cycling", including not only technical matters but examinations of the cycle cultures of various countries. A few pages show accessories, including the most beautiful photographs ! of a pedal system I have ever seen. Please email me if you have questions about this wonderful book. I can't recommend it too highly to bike enthusiasts, those who love mechanical things and the illustrations thereof, devotees of the graphic display of visual information, and anyone who wants to see how National Geographic would produce a Sharper Image catalog. If the scoring system went to 12 I'd give this book a 15.

  1. Owned this book many years. is very in depth on most models in cluding materials that specific parts are made of. That can be very useful when welding or doing custom machining. Have matched its info to factory manuals and found it to be truer than any other out there. I needed to buy very few afterward because it covers so many makes, models and years. Found it useful in doing antique Brittish, Italian and Japanese motorcycles repairs. I would buy this book before any other if i owned a general motorcycle repair shop!!!!

1 comments about Ten Years of Superbike: The First Ten Years (World Superbikes).
  1. The First Ten Years

Julian Ryder's book on the history of the World Superbike Series (WSB) is a comprehensive guide to the fastest growing world championship racing series. Key to this book is the stunning photography from world famous motorsports photographer Kel Edge. Edge, a London-based photographer, has been following WSB since day one and the book features a good mix of racing, personality shots and even a few R-rated shots of the ever-popular umbrella and trophy girls (my personal favorite of this genre is on page 156).

In the opening chapter Ryder accurately portrays the roots of Superbike racing in Southern California and the influence of Steve McLaughlin, who as a racer and promoter, was the primary driving force behind the growth of Superbike racing in the U.S. in the mid-1970s. From there the book moves to a year-by-year chronological review of the series.

The book gives great insights on the personalities and rivalries that developed between the star riders of WSB. It also delves into the technical aspects of the Superbikes. The intense rivalry between the "big four" Japanese manufacturers (Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha and Kawasaki) and the Italian Ducati and Bimota brands on and off the track is well documented.

The back section of the book is a listing of the top-15 finishes of every World Superbike race between 1988 and 1997. It event lists past national champions of Superbike racing from the U.S., Great Britain, Germany, Australia and Japan (strangely omitted in the listings is the Canadian Superbike champions). Also missing from the records section is the pole winners. That information would have been a nice.

Overall, "World Superbikes" is a must for anyone even remotely interested in motorcycle road racing. The photography in the book is so good that it makes a great addition to the coffee table, even though the book is not sized like your typical coffee table book. -- Larry Lawrence

  1. As a Harley Davidson mechanic I was impressed with Clymer's Evo Sportster Repair Manual. There is a wealth of information in this book for the do-it your-selfer.Not as complete as a factory manual but the average person won't ever miss the oem manual.I recomend it,crankpin74.

  2. This is a great manual for anybody wanting to do repair on their Harley. I found it pretty easy to follow, the instructions weren't over-my-head like with some other manuals I've worked with before. The information is very accurate. I highly recommend this book.
