  1. I needed a good book to detail the pieces of the R100GS fairing and control cluster, so I could re-assemble a bike that had been badly "customized" This manual had the diagrams, the pictures, and the wiring information I needed. Good history on the different BMW models in the preface as well.

  2. A friend of mine that helped me fix up my old BMW has one of these, and we used it extensively as a reference, so I had to buy one. He has a couple of airheads himself and knows much about the general ideas behind the engine, but he does not have the same model as mine so we used this book for some of the specifications. I tend to like this book more than the Haynes manual, which my friend has as well. NOTE: I have read on some of the discussion forums that both the Clymer's and Haynes have a few errors/type-o's in them, and it is good to check multiple sources for any major job you have to do.

  3. If youre in the USA (the Haynes manual is prefered if you're in the UK) and need a thorough well diagrammed and photographed repair and maintance manual, this is it. It tells you all of the tools you'll need for each project and goes over maintance procedures and fault diagnosis step by step. An invaluable resource.

  4. Pretty comprehensive manual considering the range of models and years it covers. I recommend putting index tabs throughout the sections you're about ready to use that are applicable to you model. Good schematics, breakdowns and fairly clear photos.

  1. How can you own the mid eighties Honda VF's and not have this. I would be lost without it, or at least at the mercy of my local Honda dealer. Good photos and tech writing make this the one to have if you like to keep your Magna or Sabre streetable.

  1. Bill Rooks's book is a great resource for anyone who works on Harley Davidsons or would like to. As an amature mechanic, I learned a lot from this book. Top end and head work are covered extensively, as well as carburetor selection and tuning. Rook stresses the importance of designing a total package for achieving specific performance goals rather than simply bolting on expensive parts. Rook's careful, simple, yet detailed descriptive writing style makes sense, and will allow anyone with a basic understanding of internal combustion engines to grow in their knowledge and tackle the project or modifying a stock Harley Davidson for performance gains. I highly reccomend this book.

  2. Book appears to have been written with the author fully knowing that he has filled the pages with useless information. Very little useful information. Many large pictures of common things, and large 1/2 page pictures of himself from childhood up and 1/2 page blow ups of spark plugs. How to change oil! What oil he likes! Basic wasted information like that. Will not buy anything from this author or publisher again. This was not a mistake by the author, you can clearly tell that it was intentional by how much wasted garbage is in the book, and how little useful information is in there. I guess he was able to sell it to people like myself.

  3. I bought this book for my husband who has ridden and built Harleys for 30 years....he is very satisfied and happy with the book because it does teach him new things.....

  4. If you like hot rodding your bike or just want to read about it get this book. A very good premmer on how to make you bike fast and street worthy at the same time. How to do it with out wasting money and time in the process. Something for every Harley rider.

  5. I'm an experienced home mechanic and found some things useful in this book but not much. He dwells on old Sportsters with magnetos which these days are nearly extinct and more work than they are worth. He dismisses Evos which is what I have and gives only a passing glance at CV carbs. He also does not give much info on cams and how to pick one. It was published last year but is outdated already. He is an old school wrench and it shows. You could get more info by surfing the Web and joining a chat room or talking to the manufacturers and it's free. Too bad.

  1. This is not a coffee table book, it is a better than average tech manual. If you are looking for a Harley novel read "The Second Coming Of Age" by: C. Vedrine

  2. If you can only afford one Harley Book, buy this one. It's the best of it's kind I've yet seen. Just one of the projects is worth the price. It' clear and well written with color pictures that are worth an additional thousand words. Reading this book will get you all fired up to spend some bucks and dig into that machine, so it's fun for the arm-chair mechanics, too. After a few projects you will feel comfortable with the mechanical challenges that a Harley can throw at you. If you do several, you will have a stong, well tended bike. It can save you a bundle if you want to hot-rod that EVO and you get bragging rights along with projects. I can't think of a better way to use twenty bucks.

  3. I was hoping for a book that would have some neat ideas on making my Harley zippier. Of the 101 projects, stuff like changing the oil and adjusting the clutch just don't do it for me. But then I have taken Harleys apart and put them back together. The factory manual is your first must have book.

  4. Woodring and Love offer a great resource for the novice or apprentice Harley wrench. Kind of like an appetizer plate: it has a little of everything but you don't get a full serving of anything. If one intends to really learn how to build a performance Harley this book is a great intro. However, such a student should consider this an overview, not a comprehensive treatise on the finer points of engine building. This book is definitely worth its price as a primer for more scholarly reads. Taken as such it is a great value.

  5. I have the factory service manual for my bike and I still refer to this book because it explains things so well. I bought this book used for a fraction of the retail price and it looks almost brand new!

  1. HOW TO BUILD AN OLD SKOOL BOBBER by Kevin Baas is a fine survey of a classic American motorcycle and explains which engines fit which frames, which drives to use, and more. Over a hundred pages packs in over three hundred color images and teaches how to build basic bobbers, choppers, and how to use after market and factory frames. A fine pick for any intending on building a bike.

  2. This book is really nothing more than a collection of generalized knowledge, and some good pictures. I don't need someone to tell me in a book that I need an engine, transmission, etc to build an old school bobber. "How to" suggests exactly that - you are going to tell me how things get done, and provide me with some good instructions, tips, tricks, and pictures to go along with it. If you want a book that gets down to the nuts and bolts of the building process, buy something from a different author because this book won't tell you how to build the bobber you want.

  3. THIS BOOK IS NOT WORTH THE PAPER IT IS WRITTEN ON! NOTHING OLD SKOOL ABOUT IT. JUST ANOTHER WORTHLESS RAG TRYING TO SELL NEW PARTS. NEVER BUY ANYTHING FROM WOLFGANG PUBLICATION. THEY ARE ALL JUNK. I WOULD GIVE YOU MY COPY FOR FREE, BUT I ALREADY USED TO LINE MY GARBAGE CAN. BUY CHOPPAHEAD DVD INSTEAD. THEY ARE REAL OLD SKOOL BOYS AND BOBBERS.

  4. This is a good basic introduction to building the "Bobber" of your dreams.

  5. One of the finest books I've read on the technique of the original custom motorcycle. A balanced mixture of technique, ideas, and history.

2 comments about How to Custom Paint Your Car (Motorbooks Workshop).
  1. I saw the cover car at a GoodGuys Car Show and then saw this book. So I bought it and all I can say is wow. It was amazing to see the process of how the real flames were painted. She takes you through the whole thing, from start to finish. The story of how she came to paint these flames is pretty funny even. The rest of the book is also great. The author JoAnn really goes into detail explaining all the techniques, from traditional flames to graphics. I really liked the wide variety of techniques she goes through in this book. There's a chapter on painting pinup girls that really blew me away. I can now mix up skin tone and paint people after reading that chapter. There are good explanations of the tools used, airbrushes and spray guns. It was very easy to understand and you don't need to be an experienced painter to use this book. I am a beginner and I could follow the lessons in it. But my favorote was the real fire process. The photo on the cover does not really show how incredible this car looks in real life. Some of the photos inside the book show the car more accurately, but the depth of the flame layers is unreal. If you want to paint real flames, check out this book. I do have another of JoAnn's books and thought that one was good, but this one goes over things that the first one does not.

  2. This book answered alot of questions I had when I painted my hot rod. The book is written in a very easy to understand, no nonsense style. It does not waste space on things you don't need. I especially liked the troubleshooting chapter. That came in very handy. One thing that helped is that there are plenty of pictures. There is a photo for every step of each technique. You can really see how it is done. If you are looking to get a tool that will make it easy to do any kind of custom paint work, this is the book for you. It covers flames, tribal graphics, even airbrush artwork. It tells the tools and materials you need for each each kind of artwork. Best $16.00 I ever spent.

2 comments about Harley-Davidson and Philosophy (Popular Culture and Philosophy).
  1. One doesn't usually associate bikers with philosophy - but here are twelve bikers who also happen to be philosophers to refute the image of the biker as uneducated or unthinking. In associating philosophy with recognizable, everyday concerns, HARLEY-DAVIDSON AND PHILOSOPHY: FULL-THROTTLE ARISTOTLE brings the staid practice of philosophy to life, joining others in the publisher's series to attract new generations to a practice often presented as a dry art of past thinkers.

    Diane C. Donovan
    California Bookwatch

  2. I was an undergraduate philosophy major with all of the earnestness and seriousness that implies. Years later, after getting my MBA, starting and running a successful business, and buying a Harley to ride, I came on this book. It reminded me of all of those seminal college conversations late into the night with girls I was trying to score with and to impress.(Usually the girls were not impressed!)

This book is fun because it does not take itself too seriously and is written by philosophers-riders who can relate the topic of philosophy to a motorcycle, especially a Harley. The book is funny, irreverent, and a little Monty Python-like. It helped me to remember all of those philosophical issues I had thought I'd forgotten over the years -- e.g., what is the best way to live one's life? -- and it started me thinking about philosophy while riding my Harley.

  1. We saw this book reviewed in Classic Bike magazine, and were very happy to find it for sale on Amazon.

It's smaller than I expected (5.5" x 8", 64 pages long), but there's lots of good information packed in a small space.

The information contained is a wonderful compendium of information you'll need when purchasing (or restoring) a Bonnie. From proper paint to what's actually a 'good' deal, this book covers thing's you want to know whether you're purchasing your first vintage Triumph, or your fifth.

  2. Excellent value - a must have for anyone thinking of purchasing a Triumph Bonneville. Comprehensive checklist - very easy to work through as you inspect that potential purchase.

  3. A must for buyers considering the Meriden Triumph Bonneville.Detailed descriptions of what to look for and especially, what to avoid.

  1. A very good book if you follow the directions in here...

  2. Great book. No games. to the point and easy to follow. It also happens to be the only current book out there. Other than this I have had to look up old Husky manuals, Brad lackeys book, Ake jonsons the technique of motocross , among others that are 20-30yrs old. It is great that the only book out there is pretty good. Like all training books the real test is if you really do what is prescribed.

  3. ALTHOUGH IT IS A GOOD BOOK, IT SHOULD BE NAMED DIFERENTLY. IS MORE ABOUT HOW TO BE FIT AND HOW TO TRAIN YOUR BODY FOR MOTOCROSS

  1. First read this book when it was published. My husband and I rode with the same club Bitchin did at that time. Had some great parties and still have wonderful meomories of the old clubhouse in B.P. Really enjoyed the story, since I lived most of it at that time.

  2. Fast moving, but plot is juvenile and predictive. Seems like this was thrown together quickly. Even the text had numerous typos.

  3. This is one of a very few well written books on the true biker lifestyle. Back when brother really meant something....not just a term loosely bandied about to any other rider on the road.

  4. this is the ultimate bikers novel. but it makes you glad the 70's and 80's are gone
