1 comments about Kawasaki Road Racers: Road-racing motorcycles from 1065 to the present day.
  1. This book details Kawasaki racing motorcycles from yesteryear to a couple of years back. There are good stories about the efforts of Kawasaki, privateers and racing teams. I wish there were more details, more nuts and bolts info on the bikes themselves. There is not much information on Eddie Lawson's racebikes, which was disappointing but then again this is not an Eddie Lawson book. Even if you look around on the net there isn't much info on Kwaka's compared to Honda. They make interesting stuff, and a lot of friends are addicted to the new Kawasaki KSR110 in Lime Green.

5 comments about Wild Ride.
  1. Best is the 14 or so pages on how "Dr." Hunter S Thompson got offer to write first 'book' on Hell's Angel's,truly from their perspective,(not police blotter reports).Outrageous mixer at Ken Kesey's ranch with Neal Cassady,(Dean Moriarty of "On the Road")..Gordon Alpert,LSD proponent,(now Dam Rass)..&music by for runner of Grateful Dead band. Will be adopted as collateral read for "deviant sub-cultures" & "americana folklore",an Easy-& enjoyable ride/

  2. Unfortunately, the author of "Wild Ride" did not take the time to learn anything about motorcycles and exhibits little more knowledge about motorcyclists. From the first page, he tosses out arcane technical observations without knowing the meaning of the terms. Reference after reference is made to both bikes and riders with no regard to substantiation for, had the author cared to verify his material, he would quickly discovered the information he cites is erroneous. I will admit that I did not read the entire book. After the dismay of crawling through the first couple of chapters, I checked random parts of the rest of the material only to discover more of the same. My bookshelf is heavy with books about motorcycling. I have four decades of riding experience, many of those years astride Harley-Davidsons. I know that my reaction to the author's misinformation is not picking at nits, it's an observation of careless journalism. Two thumbs down...

  3. Very little new information. You won't find much in this book that hasn't been written elsewhere numerous times. Author also has some sort of vendetta for off road motorcycling. He really needs to research his sources better to avoid such pitfalls. Should have checked this out of the library, but they didn't have it.

  4. Hunter Thompson's much beloved bible 'bout the Angels, and them like 'em, and those that wannabe, is a ... hard act to follow. But I truly liked this book. Unlike a lot of the other books out there on the subject, which are just "retreads" (sorry 'bout that) of what we've all read and seen before, this effort actually brings us up-to-date. And it does it in a matter-of-fact, objective, but very readable way. In too many books about the "Outlaw Biker/Culture," the author gets in the way - trying to impress us with his, or her keen observations. Mr. Reynolds just lets the subject/subjects speak for themselves, and that to me made it all the more interesting. I've been riding since I was 14, and readin' even longer - and I highly reccomend this book

  5. Read this book recommended by a biker and being a woman did not want to however very good, for me, historical journey. Who cares about a biker club's beginning or past? Now I do thanks to Reynolds. Knowing about this American sub-culture's beginnings helps very much to understand from a psychological point of view. Technical info about the mechanical horse is frivolous and unnecessary compared to the characters en pointe and the facts that tell the story are verity. I'd like to see Trash's story unfold on film one day ...

3 comments about Yamaha Snowmobile Manual, 1984-1989 (Clymer Snowmobile Repair Series) (Clymer Snowmobile Repair Series).
  1. This book I've heard is copied from the yamaha OEM shop manual. And they leave many things out of it that you are left to guess what they mean. But they do have diagrams and photos that the OEM doesn't have.

  2. I knew there was a problem when I found that the index shows chapter 7 as "GM V6 and V8 Engines"! Chapter 8 is shown to be "Ford V8 Engines" and chapter 13 as "Lower Gearcase (1964-1977)! Jumping from automotive to marine, chapter 12 is labled as "Stern Drive Removal, Installation and Upper Gearcase Overhaul"! The book is actually about only 3 models of Yamaha Snowmobiles, (not all inclusive as the cover suggests) but errors abound. Laughable, AND THIS IS THE FIFTH PRINTING!!!

  3. I rented this book from the local library and found the information in it usefull, but it had a lot of information that I did not need. In some areas it is so details that it drives you nuts and in others the information is missing or wrong.

5 comments about Harley-Davidson Panheads.
  1. I had read a short discription of the book stating that Panheads were produced until 1964 according to the author. My good friend, Bob Pickersgill rides a 1965(!) Panhead every day in the summer. Field should get his facts together BEFORE publishing a book.

  2. This book does indeed cover '65 Pans. A quick check of the index sends you to the pages containing 1965 Pans complete with terrific color photos. Never judge a book by its "short discription"!

  3. After purchasing this book, I find it to be an excellent reference for restoring a panhead. Not as detailed as How To Restore Your HD, but good. Any book that gets down to the type of screws and the finish is fairly complete.

  4. Greg Feld has produced a superb book here that mixes accurate detail on the Pan with wonderful period anecdotes and superb photos. Greg even manages to dig up archive information on mid-year changes and the rare P model.

No book writer can ever hope to cover every detail of a models history, but this guy comes real close !!

To the sad bloke that mis-read Gregs info on years, and slates this superb book (further down the list of reviews). - '65 model year Pans were produced in 1964, and followed into '65, yet ALL '65 model year bikes were stamped 65. '66 Shovels started production in '65 and yet were stamped 66. If this practice wasn't followed, then how else would HD have '66 Shovels ready for dealers to sell in late 65/early 66 ?

  5. The most comprehensive book written on the 1948-1965 Panhead, this book is as good as his Knucklehead book. Contains an Equipment Group of Big Twin Options at the back, so you know the correct trim pieces offered each year. The author has put the Panhead motorcycle into prospective with a little history; and compared them to other great big twins of the era, the Vincent Rapides and Black Shadows (instead of comparing Harley vs. Indian). Reading the sidebars throughout this book finds coincidence of advances made with new models on both sides of the pond. The author is exacting when discussing any design improvements made to the Big Twins, and covers the changes to the Panhead year by year. The subliminal value of a Greg Field book would be that he's a technical writer and a story teller.

1 comments about Destination Highways Washington: A Motorcycle Enthusiast's Guide to the Best 346 Roads in Washington State.
  1. The most focused book I have found yet for motorcycle riding in Washington. Rating each suggested road based on twistiness, road surface and so on, is a wonderful way to judge a ride before trying it.
This book was good enough to warrant taking it with me on the bike (with such limited space) for last week's ride from California to Washington. I found the information accurate after trying several of the roads highlighted in there.
Not much fluff in the book, mostly factual and objective, not a bed-time story.
