  1. Great manual for someone who wants to get to know the inner workings of their bike. Good information on completing your own maintenence.

  2. A very specific manual for the bike I own. It is not like others that pretend to explain everything on too wide ranges, like saying a single manual explaining H-D 1903-2003 models.
Very detailed and comprehensive. A must to own for those H-D bike owners.

  3. The Clymer HD manual was a huge disapointment the photos are not clear and the information and service directions are both unclear and incomplete. I would not purchase this manual as an HD repair manual again.

  1. This book is OK (the last section is the best, in my opinion), but suffers from two problems: it seems to jump around alot and it is also pretty much a fluff piece.

The book starts out trying to describe the management changes that occured at HD, then spends many pages discussing the various finance issues that came up when the management bought HD from it's parent company, then goes into sales issues then back to management issues. So, is this supposed to be a historical record or a management book? It does not devote enough time to either topic to do either subject justice.

Also, this book is in my opinion a fluff piece. All of H-D's strengths are glorified while their weaknesses are rationalized away by saying that "everyone does it" (ex, H-D's earlier management was bad, but so was every other US company's).

The last section on how to implement these changes into your company is good. If the rest of the book was written in this format it would have been much better.

  2. This is an excellent story told in easy to read fashion. It details the comeback company of the 1990's if you ask me; Harley Davidson is. I've read it 2 times and working on the third time now. I'm not a business major since the book is business classified. I just Love Harley Davidson and read all I can about this wonder.

  3. This is an excellant example of a company that was near bankruptcy and able to pull itself together, reinvent itself, and again is a world class company. Many of the things that transpired with Harley can be subsituted into our business today. The culture of Harley is so unique that many people have the Harley Logo tatooed on their bodies! This is one of the best American business success stories I have read. Many ideas that were used to regain market share would help alot of manufacturing companies today if they follow a similar path as the Harley Execs did. In my oponion, Harley is right up there with baseball and apple pie. This story translates what people can accomplish when they have common goals.

  4. This book gives an excellent glimpse into a company that committed most of the mistakes typical American companies make and found themselves in the same financial straits. But rather than giving in to a me-too attitude of trying to provide an inferior product with cheap foreign labor and cost cutting at every turn, they instead did things the American way - reconnecting with their customer base and creating a unique product that customers were proud to own.

Any company that deals with American consumers ought to have this book on the desk of every manager in the company.

  1. While very informative it is not the book for a beginner. The projects are not detailed enough. Just about every project is only 2 pages. The color pictures are a plus but this book would at best be a good supplement to your library ,not a staple.

  1. This book is not what I expected from an encyclopedia. What did I expect? Data and pictures of all the different modelyears, changes of the models from one year to the other.
This is not what you get from this book.
It describes some history of HD (nice chapter)and then comes up with a lot of nonsense pages about the "Harley A-Z".
The listing of models through the years is limited to production-numbers and colours for the productionyears.
No nice photo's from the models either, except for the same pictures you get from HD-magazines.
Than a lot of more nonsense information is added to make this a thick, heavy book with not much value.
Think twice before buying. I gave my copy away...

  2. You expect an encyclopedia to be accurate and this book is not. Many facts are wrong, motorcycles are misidentified, the yearly model lists have numerous errors.... Here's just a few examples.
Page 185; no FXRS in the 92 model list (I own a 92 FXRS LowRider which I bought new), same page had a pic of a 92 Dyna Daytona, misidentified in the caption as a 91. Page 191; pic of a Softail Standard misidentified as a Springer. Page 92; Evolution engine stated as being produced from 83 throught 98, actually it was 84 through 2000 (a custom FXR was the only model to have the Evo in 2000). If you don't know the facts you can't depend on this book to have them. Don't buy it.

  3. I glean from the other 2 reviews that this book lacks veracity; as a Harley neophyte, I would hardly know if the information presented is inaccurate.

My own complaint is that I was hoping for something a little meatier although I found some of the information interesting. I, too, wish there was more about individual models, perhaps more "color" about the idiocyncracies or character of the various bikes. Nor is it comprehensively encyclopedic. I would have expected information on every aspect of these motorcycles, including specs for all the models, etc.

I didn't think this was a "bad" book. It's merely just not exactly a "good" book and could probably be characterized as mediocre. And yes, disappointing.

  4. Bought book for a birthday gift at last minute. Arrived a day ahead of schedule

    Thanks guys

  1. This is a nice piece of work, as it chronicles the years leading up to the Sportster, starting with the pre-Sportster years of Model K, then on to the Sportsters themselves, from their inception in 1957 to today's rubber mounted models.

The book has a friendly writing style, written by someone who knows and loves Sportsters like one of the legions of devoted Sportster riders around the world. He includes personal anecdotes, describing his experiences with the various models in an inviting style, as if he were in your living room just talking bikes with you and your friends.

Descriptions of all the major developments and models include candid and unbiased observations from today's perspective, but what really makes this book a ride down memory lane are the quotes from motorcycle magazine reviews from back in the day, so we see the early Ironheads from today's eyes, as well as from the eyes of the riders of its time (funny how back then, no one complained of the excessive vibrations that we hear today of the older bikes, because most bikes were bone rattlers back then).

Dewhurst devotes just about as much attention to the Ironhead era as he does the Evolution, or Blockhead era of today, and augments his writing with a healthy helping of David Dewhursts's photography. Surely people who had Sportsters up through the 80s will wax nostalgic when seeing photos of the old XLR, XLH (the gentleman's tourer), XLCR, and XLX Ironheads, among others. Newer riders will be able to trace how the Sportster evolved into what it is today, and notice how many similarities today's Sportsters still share with the old war horses, while still remaining a potent bike today.

This is a great book for the Sportster enthusiast from any period, and anyone who is interested in motorcycle history. This bike fought back the British bikes up through the 60s until it was overtaken by the new, hot Japanese bikes. The Sportster is no super Sportbike today, but it is still a hot piece of machinery with the elegance and power of a simple muscle bike, and all the presence of a Harley Davidson. It is still a classic looking machine, whose aesthetics are still eagerly sought after today.

  2. When I bought the book I was hoping that it would contain some useful information for me as a first time owner of a Harley-Davidson Sportster. I guess I should have done my homework better because this book did not contain anything useful for me apart from some nice pictures of Sportster models thru the years. So it is a nice coffee table book for people to browse through. I guess I should buy the service manual instead so that I can get some useful info if I want to get my hands dirty working on the Sportster :-)

  3. When I was thinking about buying my first HD I did some research both on technical stuff and the history of its models. The model that attracted me the most was the Sportster, which is completing 50 years in 2007. This is a great book to tell us a little about its history and evolution. Since part of the fun in riding a Harley is enjoying its tradition (mechanicallywise you'd be better off riding a Honda), I highly recommend this book.

  4. If you love Sportsters, like I do, you will love this book. It is well written, well illustrated, and fun to read. Not the most modern book, the most recent Sportsters are 4 years old now and not in this book by the time it was published, but nonetheless a good history.

  5. Very nice book. Good photos and lots of info. But the history stops at 2004, so an update would be useful. This is really a valentine to the Sportster, and the author often glosses over their shortcomings. I think this is a mistake. I love Sportsters, but i'd like to hear both sides of the story.

  1. One doesn't usually associate bikers with philosophy - but here are twelve bikers who also happen to be philosophers to refute the image of the biker as uneducated or unthinking. In associating philosophy with recognizable, everyday concerns, HARLEY-DAVIDSON AND PHILOSOPHY: FULL-THROTTLE ARISTOTLE brings the staid practice of philosophy to life, joining others in the publisher's series to attract new generations to a practice often presented as a dry art of past thinkers.

  2. I was an undergraduate philosophy major with all of the earnestness and seriousness that implies. Years later, after getting my MBA, starting and running a successful business, and buying a Harley to ride, I came on this book. It reminded me of all of those seminal college conversations late into the night with girls I was trying to score with and to impress.(Usually the girls were not impressed!)

This book is fun because it does not take itself too seriously and is written by philosophers-riders who can relate the topic of philosophy to a motorcycle, especially a Harley. The book is funny, irreverent, and a little Monty Python-like. It helped me to remember all of those philosophical issues I had thought I'd forgotten over the years -- e.g., what is the best way to live one's life? -- and it started me thinking about philosophy while riding my Harley.

  1. Wow ! That is the first thing that comes to mind when going through this book. Although I have quite some books about HD I'm very impressed by this huge book.
Written by the best authors around, with stunning photographs that you haven't seen in other books and printed on thick high quality paper this book is great value for money.

The book describes all the different parts of HD history by going through all the models that have been produced the last 100 years. Not so much the technical descriptions are to be found but more the stories behind the models. The TC-88 story as an example is like a fairy tale if you're a HD-lover. How did they come up with the idea, what did they do and what problems they encountered, how they solved it and why certain things are the way they are is all in this story.

If youre looking for a book that describes all the different colours, serialnumbers and options for each modelyear than this is NOT your book, but if you like the story of HD, beautifull pictures of almost every model and good stories and tales by the best writers that don't hesitate and order this heavy book.

I would still buy it if it was twice the price! It's absolutely fantastic!

  2. Outside the bedroom. Boys prefer the pictures but there are wonderful marvy words for the girls, even the children can play with this. and for rainy days when your home alone or stuck at the work place read "THE SECOND COMING OF AGE" by: Vedrine, the greatest Harley semi-fiction ever written.

  3. This book is worth every penny just for the photography alone. The fascinating and informative text is like a bonus. This is the real Harley story, not the corporate propoganda garbage the Motor Company puts out. The Hunter Thompson essay is hilarious. Buy it.

  4. I have yet to recieve this item and am very disappointed in this fact and would still like to get this book.

  5. This book offers the most in-depth detailed information I have read about HD in a long time. Factual research with great pictures makes this book a winner. If you are a fan of Harley-Davidson or any motorcycle for that matter, I highly reccomend this book!

  1. Over the years I've used a lot of manuals both for work and for my hobbies. The Clymer is best so far!

  2. This is a pretty good book. It covers the basics and is easy to understand.

  3. A 923 page detailed maintenance manual for the 1984 - 1998 HD FLH/FLT/FXR; including chapters on General Information, Troubleshooting, Maintenance and Tune-up, Engine, Clutch & Primary Drive, 4 & 5 speed Trans, Fuel & Exhaust Sys, Electrical (including colored wiring diagrams), Wheels & Tires, Front & Rear Suspension & Steering, Brakes, Cruise Control, and Body. So far this is an excellent manual.

  4. This is a very well written, easy to follow manual with color wiring diagrams. A must for the person that wants to save $$$ by doing "AT HOME" maintenance and repairs on their SKOOTS. Everything from General Information, Troubleshooting, Electrical System, Wheels Tires and Hubs to Body. Very informative.
