1. Just finished hiking the Centennial Trail. Found this map to be more frustrating than helpful. The elevation countours are in metric! That wouldn't be so bad, but the interval is so large that the countours are really not that helpful in describing the topography. Also, the Centennial Trail has been rerouted in some areas, so this map wasn't current. I'm not sure what the alternative is, but just be aware that this map is very frustrating.

1. This book is well researched and contains great information. Mr. Johnson and his wife toured South Dakota after retirement and went to every town/city/village that has ever existed in the state and took photos at each stop and they provide interesting detail about each and every location. Worth the money spent.

1. I Live in the Black Hills and rely on this book extensively for travel on and off the beaten path. If you need forest service roads for camping, fishing, or hunting, this book is it! Alos lists out of the way places to see exceptional scenery and get away from the main stream grind. Try it....you'll like it!

1. This map is part of the Trails Illustrated series covering many national parks. These are all sturdy and convenient.
   
   Your map choices are essentially this one, the National Park Service map, and USGS topos. The NPS map is fine if you're staying at Rock Harbor Lodge and doing light day activities from that base.
   
   If you're backpacking, or doing long day hikes, the Trails Illustrated map is absolutely essential because the USGS topographic maps are outdated. For example, the topo shows a no-longer-existent East Feldtmann trail on the southwest part of the island.
   
   The topo also shows inaccurately the trail that goes over White Oak Ridge in the same area. The Trails Illustrated map shows the trails correctly.
   
   This map also shows (1) group and individual campsites and (2) distances between trail junctions that accord with the NPS signage. Both features make it useful for planning your trip.



2. The map is beautiful and (reasonably) accurate, but its small scale limits its use for hiking. Many of the contours are so closely spaced, faint, or interrupted by text that they are nearly useless. The publishers tried to squeeze the entire national monument onto one map sheet, which makes for a good overview and planning map, but a poor hiking map.
   Unfortunately, you have rather limited options, at least when it comes to paper maps: The USGS 7.5 minute topo sheets are great, but they don't show the trails, local hiking maps are hit and miss (some can be great). State-wide mapping software that lets you print customized hiking maps might be the way to go, but I haven't tried them yet.



3. These are great reference maps for generalized recreational activities. Not as detailed as a topo map, but still packed full of outstanding information. I have one for every state and I don't leave home with out them. An improvement over simple highway maps.



4. I was disappointed in this map. It's not much better than
   any road map, and doesn't provide any useful information
   about points of interest.

1. The product came on time, well packaged, and exactly as described. A great shopping experience.



2. Got us to South Dakota, but none of the roads we wanted to go on once we were there were marked with road signs. So we had to guess and got lost. A LOT.



3. This atlas is not confusing. Generally each grid has the county or area within it that you are wanting information. I buy mobile homes. When the person is giving directions, I can see it on the map instantly. I highly recommend it.



4. "The DeLorme South Dakota Atlas and Gazetteer" is an excellent resource for trip planning. South Dakota is a deceptively large state with a lot of wide open spaces and its own rugged terrain. This atlas should allow the average traveler to navigate to pretty much any place on the road network, and to gain a limited appreciation for the terrain along the way. The scale of the map is quite good for such a large state; the numbered and multicolored map sheets are detailed to one inch equals 3.2 miles. The map sheets also include latitude/longitude markings for GPS grids.
   
   In addition to a locational gazetteer, this DeLorme Atlas provides general information on recreational opportunities. The listings include federal and state parks, game management areas for hunting; and locations suitable for fishing, hiking, or bicycling. The map scale is not detailed enough to support off-road movement; those travelers planning to do off-road route finding are advised to consult more specialized products.
   
   The DeLorme South Dakota Atlas and Gazetteer is very highly recommended for planning and navigating for business or pleasure in South Dakota.



5. In a time of GPS usage there is still value in a map that is so accurate and easy to follow. Sometime's you just want to see more than a 5" screeen can show at one time.
