  1. The practical and informative "Historical Atlas of Texas" is an enjoyable resource for the study of the time-line for exploration, colonization, and development of Texas. I'm happy to have acquired it! I refer to it often in my genealogical research.

An easy read that is precise and to the point; this book is a great supplement to any course of study on Texas, suitable for most age groups. A different map or illustration is found with each turn of the page.

Many readers have wished for maps to be added to the great reference book "Why Stop". Here is the answer, the "Historical Atlas of Texas" is the perfect desktop companion to "Why Stop", a very informative book.

Include the "Historical Atlas of Texas" in your reference library, you will not be disappointed.

    Rex J. Weinheimer

  2. I read this book with a great deal of interest. As a born (San Antonio) and raised (Austin) Texan, this text really broadened my knowledge base. The maps, though simple, provide insight to many historical issues, especially when combined with their explanations.

To call this book an Atlas, though, is a bit of a misnomer; the maps are line drawings. I guess I was expecting an *atlas* of historical *maps*; my mistake. It's more like a history, with simple maps to illustrate the point.

Despite this, I love the book. It gave me perspective on some points I've been pondering for years. It is now a prized part of my historical atlas collection.

I'll end this review an observation: As a graduate of the University of Texas, I find it somewhat ironic this book was published by the University of Oklahoma Press; UT Press missed out on this one.

  1. America's National Historic Trails was just rated #5 on the Baker and Taylor Best Sellers List of Paperbacks from University Presses, and the author was featured in the July 1999 issue of Beyond the Cover, a monthly magazine from Whitebridge Communications of Ingram. Cindy Kelly writes "Cordes' book, America's National Historic Trails, shares her adventures, and shows how the trails -- dating from pre-Revolutionary War days to the Civil Rights marches of 1965 -- bring history to life."

What other reviewers are saying: "This book is simply a prize...it is packed with information..." Brad Hooper , Booklist 4/15/99 "...a wonderful paperback..." Scoop Baslee, News Journal, Daytona Beach 4/25/99 "...fascinating even for non-walkers..." Mike Sajina, Post Gazette, Pittsburgh 5/2/99 "Recommended for academic and public libraries." George Jenks, Library Journal Spring 1999

  2. This book offers more information than a auto club guide. Includes great history and up-to-date information on each trail. Makes the reader feel that he/she is a part of history. Easy to follow.

  3. I have to admit, I never knew there even was a National Historic Trail program until I read this fine book. More embarrassingly, I forgot I had even purchased it until I was perusing my bookshelve looking for reading material the other night.

This book offers detailed information on several national historic trails. There is historical background, and, in the case of the section on Lewis and Clark, background on the major players, and good information of what to expect and what to see along the trail route itself. This book is more than just a travelogue, it allows the reader to delve into the trail's past on a personal level. I recently drove a portion of the Lewis and Clark trail and this book helped put it into perspective.

America's National Historic Trails is a very useful book and offers insight into one of the federal government's least known programs.

  4. Twelve National Historic Trails are described in detail in this excellent guide, from the Juan Bautista de Anza NHT in Arizona and California to the Selma to Montgomery NHT in Alabama. All of the major cross-country trails (Santa Fe, Oregon/California, Lewis and Clark, Mormon) are included.

Cordes recounts each trail's history, tells what the trail looks like today, and describes major and minor points of interest along the way. Maps, photos, a lengthy bibliography, and a full index are all here. Anyone interested in exploring these trails will find this book useful and valuable. Armchair travellers will find it informative and entertaining. Highly recommended.

  1. I bought "Opening Night on Broadway" when it was first published. I found it to be much more than a written recorded history of the Broadway Musical. It is a time capsule that captures the feeling of the periods when these shows first opened. The reader can almost feel what it was like to be there in 1956 at the opening of "My Fair Lady". Mr. Suskin gives useful biographical information about some of the theater's biggest stars. As someone involved in the business end of the theatre, I also enjoyed finding out whether or not a show was a financial success or failure. My only criticism is, I wish the book was laid out chronologically, not alphabetically. That way readers could get a better perspective of what else was running when "Guys and Dolls", or "Kiss Me Kate" or even "Donnybrook opened" All in all though, I found "Opening Night.." to be the hit of the season

  2. If you love musicals, you can spend hours poring over this collection of reviews for the Broadway musicals that followed in the wake of OKLAHOMA. Hits and flops, all are here -- with some great insights and theatre diah provided by Suskin. For serious research or just plain fun reading, this is one of the most rewarding books ever published on the subject. (And the sequel is equally worthwhile!)

  1. This book was a very interesting one. I liked the fact that Colton covered several different conflict that happened during the Civil War. In the first chapter he gives some background on eac of the territories. In chapet two he talkes about the Confederat action in each of these states. Chapter three gives some background on the troops fron Colorado. The chapter that really impressed me was chapter seven, this chapter was about the effect the indians had on the War.In the last chapter he puts some closure to what the states did after the War. There was one thing that I did not like about the book and that was the way he used names in this book. Everytime he used a name he would use the full name for example Lieutnant colonel Edward R. Eyrethe first time and after that he could have said Lieutenant Colonel Eyre. This made me very frustrated having to read the long name every time. Overall this book worked for me. I liked the structure of this book. He used some good maps and photos of some of the individuals that were talked about in the book. I would reccommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about the Civil War in the West.

  1. Great book for the research I'm doing for an historical novel. It gives information about the terrain, plant life, stage and train routes, mines and military reserves.

The product arrived in perfect condition, and promptly.

  2. This was a mandatory textbook purchase and it was interesting and valuable during the course.

  1. This is a book that contains a very detailed state map broken up over 60-80 pages. It shows practically every road in the state, even unnumbered dirt roads. It shows railroad tracks, power lines, and even dry stream beds, so you absolutely can't get lost (if you are a halfway decent map reader). I bought this book to use while storm-chasing. It was a must-have. We always knew exactly where we were on the map. It is not the kind map book you would need if you are just zipping through the state on an interstate. It's more for people who will be traveling off the main roads.

  2. This map of Oklahoma is invaluable for uses such as finding camping spots, or finding land to buy. The map will tell you whether a particular area is forested, or pasture land, or desert. And it has all the small county roads and lakes. We have used similar maps of Texas and Arkansas so many times, we are happy to now have a good map of Oklahoma.

Online maps are great, but this is an excellent, detailed map available while traveling. We often like to take the road less traveled by. :)

  3. This is the atlas I recommend for finding back roads and hiking trails. These guides are very detailed because they are written for each individual state. Hawaii's map pages are 1:84,000 scale and parts of Alaska can have 1:1,1,400,000 scale. Visit http://delorme.com and you can get information on map scales and elevations for the state you're interested in.

I can thank this book for the best 4th of July I ever had. We live in Washington State. Everyone knows that camping is very crowded over the 4th. It was in this book that I found Lost Lake. It's a small lake tucked into the mountains off highway 12 near Mt. Rainier. Lost Lake is off the beaten path and our atlas showed us the way to get there. Not only did we find Lost Lake but we had a waterfront campsite and I caught my limit of rainbow trout. There are many more lakes that we will explore next summer using this atlas. Visit our blog at www.radiodirectoryvagabonds.blogspot.com - and you can see Lost Lake and the beautiful campsite we found. The book is great for armchair journeys, finding boat launches, streams, and public hunting and fishing grounds. This is great for trip planning and treasuring hunting for the perfect campsite!

  4. We used this map for the first time last weekend. It was mostly clear and we managed to locate our position in the center of a large town without too much trouble. Overall we were satisfied, but only give 3 stars due to the following problems:

We found the symbols for road numbers confusing - they don't use the standard symbol for interstate - so sometimes we had a list of possible road numbers without knowing which would be used on signposts. Another irritating feature is that the overlap between pages is very small, so that you find yourself flicking back between pages when you are on the edge. Finally, there are no large scale maps of any big cities. As a result we are going to have to buy a separate map of Oklahoma City, which is an additional expense we didn't expect.

  5. This atlas is about 11" x 15" and shows a lot of good info about the state in the 67 separate maps included. The maps are at a 1:200,000 scale, which gives some good details. Most roads, lakes, and rivers are named, and the maps use shading and elevation lines to show topography. Actual elevations are not shown, except for mountain peaks, which show names and elevations. Many landmarks are shown, as well as campgrounds and sporting locations. For those who want to learn more about a state, these books are well worth the money.
