1. Just finished hiking the Centennial Trail. Found this map to be more frustrating than helpful. The elevation countours are in metric! That wouldn't be so bad, but the interval is so large that the countours are really not that helpful in describing the topography. Also, the Centennial Trail has been rerouted in some areas, so this map wasn't current. I'm not sure what the alternative is, but just be aware that this map is very frustrating.

1. I've read most of the classic books about this battle, it's participants and related topics. This is, in my opinion, at the top of the list. Mr. King takes a fresh look and has done meticulous detailed research to support his opinions.
   I most appreciated his insight into human behavior, personality make-up, personal and organizational power and influence, and relationships. Because these really are what make the events what they were.
   We will never know what "really" happened here, but this book certainly tips the balance toward knowing more. I appreciate the detail, even if at times it gets to be a bit mind numbing. I'd rather have too much "proof" than not enough.
   Bad news is the maps are poorly printed and represented. It is difficult to see all the exciting detail referenced in the narrative. I am assuming I can find them in other references, but was disappointed I couldn't easily follow along as I read. BUT, This is not a reason to pass up the book.
   I highly recommend this book as must do reading for anyone who wants to have more than a superficial understanding of the battle. It's definitely provocative.

1. Prior to SPV's Atlas', the Rand McNally Handy Railroad Atlas was the standard atlas.
   
   The Handy RR Atlas' are no longer produced. In fact, Rand McNally's own website refers customers to the SPV RR Atlas now.
   
   Not only does this Atlas show the current carrier, it shows the predecessor and virtually EVERY common carrier railroad, including ALL abandoned lines in the U.S. The only railroads that might be missing are urban trolley/streetcar lines, but he even includes most of them.
   
   For places that have changed names over the years, he includes the heritage name with the modern location name. One state, say Arizona, will take up to 15 - 20 maps!
   
   The weakness of this book is that it is railroad MAPS only so it may take some creative work to find the old line you are looking for from a road. There are NO ROADS or other terrain feauture included. RAIL, waterways/lakes/rivers, and state boundaries ONLY.
   
   These books can be pricey, at about $25 each but when you see the volumes of research and detail - it is a good value. The maps are printed on a glossy heavy duty type paper. There are about 15 volumes in order to get the entire USA.

2. The DeLorme maps include everything of interest in North Dakota to travelers. In addition to the roads, cities and airports included in standard road maps, DeLorme has included towns, lakes, rivers, intermittent water areas, current and abandoned railroad lines, historic sites, national wildlife refuges, state parks and recreation areas and campgrounds and what services are available at each. Wildlife viewing areas are listed including the types of wildlife which can be seen. Higher hills, coulees, creeks, fishing spots and tourist attractions are identified. North Dakota's unique natural features such as the Pembina Gorge in the northeastern part of the state and the remote areas of the Badlands are included. The sites are indicated on the maps and listed in indexes of various attractions. Also included is a full index of place names and features and marks for using the maps with the Global Positioning System. The GPS is a series of satellites used by the U.S. government for navigation, which when used with a GPS receiver, will provide accurate information about location, direction and speed of travel anywhere on earth.

The North Dakota Atlas & Gazetteer, and others in the series, include nearly everything you would expect to find on a map and more, including roads; railroad lines, current and abandoned; towns; rivers; lakes; the higher hills; Wildlife management Areas; federal and state land such as wildlife reuges and parks; fishing areas,; wildlife viewing areas, including what type of wildlife can be see; campgrounds; unique natural features; museums and other attractions; tribal lands; historic sites and trails.

   These not only are in the maps, but many are cross-referenced in indexes.

   There also is a complete index of place names and map features, plus marks fo using the maps with the Global Positioning System.

   The other books in the Atlas & Gazetteer series are of equal quality, if you are interested in any ohter states.

   You can't obtain so much informatin about North Dakota anywhere in 66 pages or the North Dakota Atlas & Gazeteer's price.

   It's a true bargain, and a real service to outdoor enthusiasts and travelers.

4. Love these maps. Always buy one of the states we are visiting.. have saved many hours of stuck in construction or accident, plus allows us to visit out of the way places. recommend to anyone.
