3 comments about Streetwise Brooklyn Map - Laminated City Street Map of Brooklyn, New York - with integrated subway station locations.
  1. This map was not at all helpful. The text is small. It splits the borough in half vertically with one half on one side and the other half on the flip side of the map. I have found other maps that are much more user-friendly especially for individuals who are not very familiar with Brooklyn.

  2. To add to the criticism of this map, it does not have the directions of one way streets on it. The Streetwise Manhattan has little arrows on all the one way streets, and this is even more crucial for navigating in Brooklyn!

I would definitely pick out a map in a store and then buy it online if it's cheaper.

  3. I loved Streetwise Manhattan so I bought this. What a disapointment! The main strength of Streetwise is the integration of Streets and Subways. But Streetwise Brooklyn actually leaves off some subway stations! Ever try to mark up a laminated map to add a stop? Doesn't work, and neither does this map. And the north/south split just doesn't work for Brooklyn. Also, the trains to Brooklyn changed when the Manhattan bridge re-opened to subway traffic, so where's a new edition? Do get the Manhattan version, it's complete and works great, but skip Brooklyn.

4 comments about New Yorker's New York City Five Borough Map.
  1. Since I moved to NYC, I have never left home without this. It is a real life-saver. You get every street in NYC labeled plus the subway lines that stop there in a clear, colorful map. I spent an hour looking through different maps at a bookstore, and this is the best map is better than any map out there. I bought a bunch so I could give them out to visiting friends. If you are going to be in Manhattan, there's a bus map too. This map is perfect for New Yorkers, tourists, students, and just about everyone else. The only thing that would make this map better would be including a bus map for the rest of the boroughs.

  2. Great map which shows completely and detailed all the facts of New York City in all 5 boroughs.

  3. I bought this map when I first moved to NYC and still carry it with me, on a daily basis, 3 years later. The subway map is easy to read. The guide in the back and handy numbers-to-know makes this map a one-stop shop for all your travelling needs. My favorite part is that it is laminated, so it will last you forever. I've put together several care packages for friends who have moved to NYC and I always include one of these maps!

  4. Just a beautiful map. All the things New York that you read about or see on TV is here. If you are planning a visit to New York City, this map should be your first purchase. The detail of Lower Manhattan and the subway system is terrific. I am considering buying another NY map so I can display both sides of the map at once. Very informative, at a very reasonable price. It answers all your questions about the location of famous places in the city. A very good reference tool, get one and you will see the greatest city in the world before you in living color.

4 comments about City Walks: New York: 50 Adventures on Foot.
  1. What a great idea. 50 adventures that you can stick in your pocket and enjoy without looking like you are a tourist. I pulled out a few cards written about parts of the City I know and love to see if the author knows her stuff. Take card 15 - the Ms. Fay touches the high spots: Abingdon Square, Ottomanelli's, Zito's, Murry's Cheese, Rocco's Pastry and more. Walk these streets led by her map and prose and you'll have a wonderful visit. Flipping through the cards, I think every significant neighborhood has been captured. I know in warmer weather, I'll use a couple of her cards to explore Brooklyn, the Bronx and Queens - boroughs that are a lot more of a mystery to me than Manhattan. Naturally, with a map on one side of a 4X5 card, there isn't much room left for text. Having said that, I wish we had more detail about each area - a small complaint. Maybe in V.2.0 some folded cards?

I collect anything NYC oriented and I am happy to add this pack of cards to my library but I wondered what the market is for these cards. My guess is that locals will use them to learn about streets outside their sphere. Out of towners will be able to stick one or two in a pocket and stroll through one of the most fascinating cities in the world. If you are a NYC fan, you need to get your copy of City Walks New York.

  2. We've spent a lot of time in NYC, and I can attest from experience that each walk is well worth taking. The format is easy to use, with a master card showing the location of all the walks, and clear directions in the cards.

Each card has red circled numbers and letters on the maps, and NO explanation of what the numbers and letters signify. Are they bus and subway numbers? Are they points of interest? I'll figure it out when I'm there next week, but it would be nice to know ahead of time.

The boroughs are an important omission. We've been to Manhatten three times, and intend to concentrate on Brooklyn (the 4th most populous city in America, if it was a city unto itself) this trip. Many of the 50 Manhatten walks could be consolidated, to allow 10 walks for Brooklyn, and 5 each for Queens and the Bronx. Brooklyn has Prospect Park and Park Slope, Coney Island, and so much more I'm unfamiliar with.

  3. I bought this to give as a Christmas gift. It arrived in used condition although it was sold as new. There was no wrapper so when I removed it from the shipping box, the contents spilled. There was a barcode sticker placed over the original barcode on the bottom of the box. As far as I can tell the contents are intact. This is the first time I have received anything from Amazon that was less than expected. I hope you don't have any similar experiences.

  4. Our family recently returned from a visit to Manhattan. We used 5 or 6 texts as well as this boxed set of walking tours. The set consists of 50 3-3/4 by 5-1/2 inch heavy stock cards and a folding master card that shows all the walks in the context of a five bouroughs map.

There are 5 walks in Central Park, 8 Midtown, 3 north of the park and 19 south of the Flatiron Building. Two walks cover The Bronx, two are in Queens, 5 in Brooklyn. Each walk card shows a map on one side, of about a square mile, complete with Metro stops and a trail marked out; on the other side the text (which is smallish, but I'm glad for that because there's such a wealth of information one could fit on each card!) that points out historic buildings and architectural features and tells a few stories about the character of the area as well as its characters.

It was very convenient to grab a few cards as we went out the door. Also, after we got back and looked at pictures, it was easy to find that tour and get some information about it.

The only complaint is predictable. Each walking tour could handle a booklet, so a few hundred words is, of course, inadequate. There is no information about restaurants; again, that's understandable, but maybe more information could be included on the maps?

    I would buy them again.

  1. ... be it as a newbie or not, it is this map. Accurate, perfect format, and above all, indestructible. Survived long days in my pockets without wear or tear, and continues to draw jealous looks from everyone with a crumpled and dog-eared paper pocket map ;-)

  2. This really is a great little NYC map. It unfolds and refolds easily without that frustrating 'which part do I fold in now?' experience traditionally associated with folding maps. The lamination ensures that it won't suffer from wear and tear. Get one!

  3. I was blown away with all the info they crammed into a two sided page that folds up to 3" x 4" pocket size & it's water proof too. I can't imagine what you'd need that this little map doesn't have. One side includes the "street" map with a list of all the "main" street names & guides for all the sights along with the NY City subway routes.

The other side includes day trip suggestions, top sights to see and this larger map covers NYC and all the surrounding areas ... The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan Midtown, Financial District, Chinatown, Little Italy, Greenwich Village, SoHo and a bit of info about each including subway info.

This map also has facts of all kinds about the city ie: history & statistics, climate, airport info, and my favorite ... listings of all the museums/galleries, music/theaters/opera, skyscrapers, parks/gardens/zoos, annual festivals/festivities, & other sights with a brief explanations of each and their location on the map.

I bought several books at the same time I bought this map. I've been studying this map and charting on my trip and haven't even looked at the books yet. This map is really all you need unless you want to read up on the history of sites before you arrive. DS

  4. These are great maps! My daughter used London and Paris while in Europe and we just used NYC. You can put them in your pocket and yet they are detailed enough to use the subway maps.

  1. Two crucial tips for NYC: have great maps and pack lightly. Flashmaps allows you to do both! This small book can be pulled out quickly and referenced without having to unfold a huge map. Multiple maps for subways and buses and shopping aren't needed because everything is contained in this booklet. It can be stashed in a coat pocket or small bag.

I would recommend this to anyone visiting for the first time or 100th time!

  2. I have had all the editions of this map. It is a great resource for NYC. I even use their recommendations for restaurants. The only minor complaint I have is about the Brooklyn and Queens maps. These are very superficial and cannot be used to get around these burroughs.

  3. I have visited New York City twice now and I am currently planning my 3th trip. Fodor's flashmaps are an indispensible guide: practical, easy to use and with all the information I need as a tourist to quickly find my way around the city. I have compared flashmaps with other guides and maps but I find Fodor's stand out from the competition: the information is presented in a very logical and straightforward way and looking up the desired info is a matter of seconds; the information is comprehensive, useful and very to-the-point: the editors focus on information you need on a daily bases and is very much of the 'no frills, need to know'-class: important addresses, streetfinders, important contact information, transportation, hotels, hospitals, post offices as wel as shopping addresses, hotels and airports to name just a few out of more then 30 categories. And finally: the book's dimensions make it easy to carry around without that 'hey, look at me, I am a tourist'-feel. Perhaps one of the best guides on the market and highly recommended.

  4. I bought four different reference sources for a trip to NYC. Each had something unique to offer but if I only had the funds to purchase one, this would have been it. It has it all - easy to use, tons of info like address finder, subway and bus maps, restaurant lists with pricing guidelines and much more. The size is great, fits nicely in a purse or deep pocket. It states on the front that it's the "Ultimate Map Guide" and it is.

  5. A bouhgt several different NY guides, but this map was the one I used most. It's small enough that you can open it in subway without been in shame, but big enough to read street names without binoculars. Map also includes subway system, wich was great. Next trip I will leave my guidebooks to home and take this map and michelins guide to NY.

  1. We have come to rely on the Gazetteer series for general navigation when an Internet connection is not available. My husband purchased the New York version for a business trip and found it to provide exactly the information he needed.

  2. You really cannot go wrong with the Atlas Gazetteer from Delorme. Especially if you are flying into Jackson, MS and planning to drive around half(literally) the state on all sorts of back roads trying to find streams, creeks, etc.

  3. I wanted to get this atlas, especially to help us find places to go camping and hiking.. It's not always easy to find campgrounds or primitive campsites (since they're not always located in clearly identified campgrounds), so having these detailed maps is very useful for that. We recently used the atlas when we camped in the Catskill Mountains region, and I was glad we had these maps to help us out.

  4. Already have an Atlas, topo CD set of Northeast, Garmin GPS Vista with topo/street maps. Once I found these Gazetteers, I bought one for every state in New England and New York. Each of the above provide different levels of information and alternative routes and access to various locations, often places with no direct road or trails. The gazatteers provide fast detail access to areas in question over the GPS or atlas and are invaluable to me while in the vehical. Although, the GPS is my lifeline away from the vehical, the gazatteers are large and not weather resistant.

  1. Purchased for my daughter prior to her attending college in NYC. She says this has been very helpful in navigating her way around

  2. I've been using this map (multiple copies) in my classroom during my class' New York City unit for the past several years. It is perfect for our needs, though it only shows half of Manhattan on each side, so it is not great for display purposes. We also take it with us when we visit the City on our class trip and it is perfect for walking/riding around - very clear and easy to read.
    Good value for the money.

3 comments about The Historical Atlas of New York City: A Visual Celebration of 400 Years of New York City's History.
  1. This book includes many really nice maps of early New York. Much of the historical information included in the maps is uniquely presented here and lacking in many other publications. However, there are many editorial mistakes and misspellings that I have observed, which makes me wonder about the accuracy of the rest of the information. Additionally, the narrative text is simple, limited and sometimes disjointed and difficult to follow. Buy this book simply for its beautiful graphics and depictions of the city as it used to be. Some periods of the city's history could be greatly expanded, especially the city's role in the revolution and the siege of Fort Washington. Anyone with knowledge of the city will find it of limited value beyond the maps and illustrations. A little polishing of this book and some additional material for some historical periods in a future edition would make this book an outstanding work. For now, I would call it good but lacking in important areas.

  2. This is simply one of the best NYC historical reference work available. The book is divided into periods and will display numerous maps , photos and drawings of the buildings and landscape of the city at that time in history. Plenty of history is included to make certain you are keyed in to the era, and how the buildings fit in. Just a beautiful book. Great binding and very sturdy.
    Strong buy

  3. The Historical Atlas of New York City solved a huge problem for me. I'm writing a novel set partly in New York in 1864, and while I lived in the City in 1964, that's a hundred years too late for this novel! I live now where research facilities are slim, and I needed something to show me where people lived, shopped, worked, entertained themselves.

This book answered my questions. It showed me which landmark buildings were on which streets then and gave me the background for the characters who inhabit my novel and the City. It has prevented me from having a character walk past the Flatiron building, or attend a ball at the Waldorf-Astoria.

It also confirmed that elderly gentlemen probably played chess in Tompkins Square Park just as they did a hundred years later, and that the brownstones around Washington Square were inhabited by wealthy families.

It has enabled me to put some of my own reminiscences (faithfully recorded in my journals of the time) into the book while avoiding some anomalies.

Not all my questions were resolved in this book, but studying the maps gave me enough information about the trains in New York to avoid some errors, like describing Grand Central Station, because it gives the date that amazing edifice was built.

A valuable addition to my own research library!

5 comments about Not for Tourists 2008 Guide to New York City (Not for Tourists: New York City).
  1. I wouldn't recommend this for a first time traveler to NYC as the maps can be a little difficult to follow (broken up into smaller neighborhoods). It was handy to have in our backpack because it had almost every restaurant that we could think of listed in it, along with their phone numbers, address, time they were open to, and a brief comment on the food there (including which places to avoid). If you're from out of town and need to find the nearest branch of your local bank, it's in there. If you're looking for a coffee shop other than Starbucks, it's in there.

  2. I purchased this for both NYC and Brooklyn and it's been a life saver. This book tells you where to find the things you need when you live in a city. Laundrymat? Banks? Coffee shop where the locals hang out? History and maps of the neighborhoods? It's all here. Also very small and easy to carry with you. One of my friends who visited for a week, prefered to carry this over the traditional guide books, due to the size.

  3. This book was great. I just returned from my trip to NY and I can tell you this book was a great help. I even got one for a friend who lives in NY and thought it was an excellent guide. It's easy to use and it size its really practical. You see people walking around NY with big maps or books, but this one fits in your pocket and has all the information you need. Other guides are just full with information, which is helpful but makes it really cumbersome to find things while you are walking around.

  4. I checked this book out from the library and dropped it in my suitcase without looking at it right before a trip to New York. I assumed the title was pandering to every person's belief that they are not a tourist--that's everyone ELSE. Well, I didn't need to find any hardware stores or pet supply stores so this book never left my hotel room. I am sure it's a great book but don't think of it as a travel guide. So my 3-star rating is an average of 4 stars for what it probably is, and 2 stars for what I thought it was!

  5. I used this book as a tourist (less than 72 hrs in the city qualifies, right?), and could not have been more pleased. The size of the book is perfect for all-day toting around, and I like the scale of the maps that allow for a lot of detailed local information to be presented. The first half of the book is 1/4 mile scaled maps that meticulously show absolutely everything you could ever need to find - ATMs, coffee shops, farmers market, etc. The second half goes into more detail about specific places and items of interest - arts & entertainment, transit, parks & places. And every page is stuffed to the margins with the authors' dead-on suggestions and commentary.

If you just want to go to Times Square and the Empire State Building, you do not need this book. If you want to experience more of the local flavor (a genuine NYC bagel cannot be beat!), then this book is for you. If nothing else, it's a fascinating read, and who has ever said that about a key map? I'll be buying a new NFT any time I visit one of the cities they cover.

  1. I rate this as number three of the four references I purchased to help me navigate NYC. It's sturdy, compact, light weight and packs in all the information you might need to navigate Manhattan and hit the tourist spots.
This is the map to buy if you want to travel light in Manhattan.

  2. don't waste your money. just because its laminated doesn't make it a good map. Not all streets are on it and sections of manhattan are missing. I wouldn't count on this map to help you out if you don't know the area and have things memorized before you get here. WE got lost on more than one occasion trying to use this thing.
Get the NFT black book of nyc instead. It has all you need and is small enough to fit into your purse or pocket.

  3. I use these maps on every trip I go on! They are so accurate and easy to use. The map is durable for every type of weather and small enough to stick in a small bag. There is a streetwise map for every major city we have gone to and we love them! It's a great "memory keeper" as well.

  4. This is a great map of the city, easy to carry around. It's plastic, a big plus when it starts raining or if you spill anything on it. My only complain is that it does not include a Subway Map. It has Subway Routes in the map but with all the streets, etc it get a little difficult to make out.
Overall, great map. A must have for tourist or anyone new to the city.

  5. I purchased this map to use on a short trip to NYC. Although it is laminated and folds up to pocket size, there were better maps in the guide books I purchased. On the trip, I didn't use it very much.
