  1. I just returned from Amsterdam and found this map to be extremely helpful. I particularly liked that it was sturdy enough to bump around in my bag unscathed, small enough that it didn't require a lot of room, and concise enough to help me find my way. I highly recommend.

  1. We just returned from an awesome Beer Tour of Belgium. I was attempting to get a map locally (In the Santa Cruz County, CA area). None to be found at any bookstore. All out. Help. Then I remembered good old Amazon. Got on line and found one and it was shipped in time to go on the trip with us. Got to spend a wonderful evening with our itinerary the day before we left finding and circling the tiny towns and big cities we were going to visit.
    Many thanks

  2. I'm planning a bike tour of Belgium breweries. This map helps with the overall lay of the land, but I'll need some province maps before it gets too final.

  3. I used this map to try to follow a well known bicycle race in Belgium- it could have been much clearer. Seems like all the Michelin maps I have seen this is hard to follow- they aren't designed like US road maps so maybe it's "cultural" bias that kept this from being more useful. The only option I could find online so for that I will gave it 2 out of 5 stars.

  4. Michelin make very good products and this is not an exception

Very usefull all the info, easy to understand and not missing details

I used in my trip to BENELUX in adition to my GPS

    I highly recomend it

One complain, is regular paper not water resistant

  1. Besides just being an excellent quality note book for recording your travels Moleskin includes a nice little map and indexes to organize essential information on your travels. Absolutely worth having....

  2. This is a very unusual product and I would strongly encourage anyone considering getting one to be completely aware of what it is before they purchase it. First, if you are looking for a single travel guide to prepare you for your trip to New York (or anywhere else there is a guide for), this is very close to worthless, if not entirely worthless. I would call one's attention to the title of the product. It is a "Notebook." That means that most of the pages are blank. This literally is a book for taking notes in.

So what do you get when you buy this? Every book in the series follows the same format. First there is a personal information page with address, phone, allergies, family doctor, passport number, then map information with public transportation maps. Then follows information on the various forms of transportation with phone numbers and websites, including cabs, buses, other forms of public transportation, and airports. There are some blank itinerary pages, measurement and speed conversion charts, size conversion charts (for shoppers), then a long series of neighborhood maps, including an index. And that's it. The final two-thirds of the notebook are blank. The next 20 or so pages are completely blank and unlined for whatever use you want to put them to. Next come several pages intended for writing down names of restaurants, bars, museums, historical sites, hotels, or whatever. The book also comes with unlabeled tabs with stickers to use as desired (for theaters, concert halls, or whatever you desire) as well as tracing paper for, as the label says, "Itineraries or Whatever." Finally, there is the usual pocket at the back that is found in all Moleskine products.

For some people this is going to be an absolutely useless product. But for many this will be remarkably useful. In fact, I can envision two uses for this notebook. First, those who are planning a trip to one of the places for which Moleskine has produced a book. Let's say one has consulted the Blue guide, the Eyewitness Guide (by DK), a Rough Guide, the Michelin guide, and the Let's Go guide. Maybe you've bought all of these, making for five guides. No way do you want to drag all of these on your trip or more than one on your flight. So what might you do? You might take the Moleskin Notebook, record into it all the places you want to see, restaurants you want to dine at, museums you want to stroll through, and anything else you want to do while in your destination of choice, and record it there. So the Moleskine City Notebook can serve as a distillation of all the various travel guides, web sites, and other resources you have consulted. And instead of hauling about a large Fodor's guide, you can carry about this small Notebook that can easily fit into a backpack, purse, should bag, or even pocket.

The only downside is that the Moleskine City Notebook is only as good as you make it. If you do a good job of planning your trip, it will be filled to the brim with useful and helpful information. If not, it will be as unhelpful as you have made it.

There is a second use to which the City Notebook can be put to use, though it is not one for which it was primarily designed. You could use it for the city in which you live, should you live in one of the cities for which one is made. I live, for instance, in Chicago. I have bought one of these so that I can over time use it to record every bit of helpful information that I might find useful or helpful. I can record what hours the Seminary Co-Op Bookstore (the real one, not the trade version on 57th Street) is open. The hours for the Chicago Public Library and the Newberry Library. Phone numbers of restaurants and addresses of bars. And so on and so forth. Granted, these books will only benefit those who live in one of those cities, but for the U.S. New York, Chicago, Boston, Washington D.C., Seattle, San Francisco, and Los Angeles are pretty populated areas.

So this is a very well conceived product though it absolutely has to be stressed that it is a specialized one. Please note: THIS ISN'T FOR EVERYONE. If you don't want to use the Notebook to plan your trip it is going to be very close to worthless. I'll emphasize again: this is only as good a product as you make it. But if you use it to help you plan your trip, it could be the single item you would most loathe to be without after your notebook.

  3. I love these little city notebooks. I can carry it in my purse on my travels and it doesn't take up much room. It has a wonderful little city map that is quite useful. I love it!

  4. Having used and loved the Moleskine City Notebooks for Washington DC and London, I was excited to get the one for Amsterdam. Alas, it wasn't nearly as useful as the other two.

First, while I realize that the City Notebooks usually only contain metro maps, it really would have been helpful to include a map of the city tram system (as that runs overground on rails and so therefore isn't subject to the whims of route changes quite like a bus system might be.) The metro by itself doesn't cover a significant portion of the city that is covered by the Moleskine map itself, which is quite frustrating. The overground trams are much more common and easy to use to get from point to point.

Second, while the street maps are incredibly detailed, they cover a significantly smaller portion of the city than, say, the DC or London maps. Unlike the DC or London maps, they contain *every* street in the parts covered, but since the overall area covered is so much smaller, I found myself frequently consulting the large, unwieldy tourist map that I bought for 2 at the IAmsterdam visitor center in Centraal train station.

Other than these two things, the Amsterdam book contained the same components as the other City Notebooks, and in that respect, I did find it quite useful. However, the issue with the maps was enough to take its rating down a couple of stars for me.

  1. I bought this book for my first trip to Amsterdam. The basic info is sound but there were some problems. The most annoying is that key parts of maps end up in the middle (binding) making them difficult to read. The restaurant reviews were in inaccurate and left the reader wondering whether anyone from Frommers had been in the restaurant. In summary the book is OK but there are better ones on the market.

  2. I just took this book to Amsterdam. I found it to be very helpful. The books features maps dedicated to a single subject (such as a restaurant map, a hotel map, etc.). We used these extensively. The Frommer's Irreverent Guides have more candid and entertaining reviews (including information on coffeeshops, which this book essentially skips), but this book is an excellent one-stop source of travel information. If you're only bringing one guide to Amsterdam, this one will do the job well. If you can pack two, bring along the Irreverent Guide (or something similarly hip).

  3. We travel a lot and always get a Frommer's Guide the first time we visit a new place. In general these guides are full of useful information, accurate maps and excellent sight-seeing suggestions and lists of restaurants. We have found this to be true of the Frommer's Guides to France, Provence, Germany, London, Spain and Norway.

This Amsterdam guide did not live up to our expectations. It's not that the book is "terrible", but we consistently found inaccuracies and, as others have said here, were often left wondering if the author George McDonald actually ate at the restaurants he recommends. One could reasonably suspect that the appearance of some of these restaurants' names in the guide were paid endorsements. (A particular recommendation for Indonesian food, which one can find in abundance in Amsterdam, was especially suspicious, as it was overpriced and nowhere near the quality of other restaurants we visited).

We always like to walk when visiting a city, and this Amsterdam Guide contains several long walking tours. We tried almost all of them, and invariably gave up and headed in our own direction. The maps provided with the walking tours had inaccuracies serious enough to really throw us off (street names off by an entire block), and included ridiculous "points of interest" -- in one case he sends you off to see the site of a historic orphanage, when in fact the orphanage is gone and now replaced by the new Ballet house, an unattractive steel and glass monstrosity. He even goes so far as to explain that the orphanage "used" to stand there. What's the point? Does Mr. McDonald really not think that Amsterdam has enough existing points-of-interest that he has to send us off to the ones that aren't there anymore?

Further, the tear-out folding map that comes with the book contains little more than street names -- there are inexplicably no references to points-of-interest mentioned in the book, or even major landmarks.

  4. I found this book very useful. It's very detailed and gives a lot of relevant, interesting information on what to see and do in Amsterdam. There are also suggested walking tours that I really enjoyed.

  5. I found this book to be very helpful in both preparing for and experiencing my trip to Amsterdam. It can be daunting to visit this country as there are so many things to see and such diverse lifestyles. The one area that I believe this book, as well as the 4 others I read during my preparations, fell short was in the area of hotels and where to stay during the trip. We were looking for something with all of the amenities of the luxury hotels, but with a funky/off beat feel to it. We stayed at the Hilton, but that was like being in the states. Not bad, but hardly the feel of this great city. Frommer does, however, always deliver in the areas surrounding food, shopping, and excursions and this book is no exception. It was a great prep guide and all of the maps helped tremendously.

  1. this is one of the worst maps i have ever read. the streets are printed so small it is near impossible to read, and the street index is impossible to use due to the fact that some of the streets are listed by the article and others by the first word. give yourself a break and just pick up a free map at any of the numerous tourist information boards located around the city, most notably in grand place. the only reason to get this map is if you are going to be traveling in the brussels suburbs, where the free maps do not cover.

oh, and one more thing. the easiest way to get around brussels is through their easy and free subway system. this map does not have any of the stops on it, as opposed to any of the free maps.

  2. This book was received in short order, in great condition, and is being used! The information may not be 2007 but for my purposes it is perfect. I will definitely order from this site again. Lorna Auld

  3. the free map given out by the tourist office is far better--much
    easier to read

  4. Very nice map, especially in rainy London. Wish it were a little bigger, or wish the title box was a little smaller.

  5. It's a high quality map, very attractive and waterproof. But it's not that useful on the ground. Get a good guide book with zone maps instead. We never referred to this even once in-country.

  1. I've always been partial to choosing the DK eyewitness travel books since they have pictures and concise descriptions of the attractions. However, the "Top 10" series seems to be a bit unorganized in the way they present the info. It literally is top 10 of stuff in Amsterdam; which means they list attractions overall and is not organized in reference to area (which helps when you're planning your day). Not until the last half of the guide do they list by area, but they cross-reference to other pages, so you're flipping around to get various bits of info about the attraction. If there's a regular dk guide i would chose this over the top 10 in the future.

  2. First, I'm a fan of the Eyewitness series and find all their books valuable. Not knowing alot about Amsterdam I wanted something that gave me an overview but also provided alot of information in a condensed format. This was the book, also books are heavy and I want to travel with my book so size was also a factor. This fit the bill.

  3. The DK Top 10 guidebook is excellent for the traveler who has just a few days to spend in Amsterdam. It has the highlights of the city with maps and details useful for navigating the city.

  1. The book is logical. The font is read-able. It fits in a jacket pocket or purse. It does not have a pushy viewpoint. The fold out map was clear.

  2. This guide while in Amsterdam was very useful. Great maps and great tips on all the nooks and crannies of a great city. I liked that it was small enough to carry around and had a pull of map that was useful.

  3. This book is organized so well for anyone to plan a trip in Amsterdam. The writing, the map, favorite's highlights, and quality of printing are excellent. It's a very friendly book, and easy to carry too. The reason for missing 5-stars is that this book does not tell how/where to see the windmill. But I strongly recommended everyone should get this book before heading for Amsterdam.

  1. This map would be great if it were about twice as large, but so much is crowded into this tiny folding map that you need a BIG magnifying glass just to see it. A much better map is in the back of the Eyewitness "Pocket Map and Guide Amsterdam"

  2. Amsterdam is insanely confusing. like many old european cities, none of the streets make sense and it can be really intimidating to navigate on foot (but the best way to see the city). i have been twice, the first time with a different map and the second time with.

it was like night and day. i realized the second time around that i had been practically on top of many of the places i wanted to see (ex, the Anne Frank Museum & House) but totally missed out because i couldn't figure out the map/crazy city that has 10 different languages. the streetwise map made all the difference-it so easy this time i got relax and enjoy myself instead of being frustrated and wandering aimlessly.

the streetwise was really easy to read, get a sense of the city and plan your day efficiently. it also helps because you can show it to locals and they can point you to hidden little gems, we found the best beer-bar i have every been to that way. so glad i had this map this time.

there is just too much to see/do in this city to waste time.

  3. Great Map. Received it quickly, in perfert shape. Couldn't find it in bookstores.

  4. This rugged and detailed map made our recent trip to Amsterdam a breeze, from negotiating the trams to finding the major and minor sights in the city.

  5. This map is very detailed and I love that it is laminated and will be easy to use on our trip. We won't have to worry about spilling something on it or rain. I think this is a great thing to have on hand while traveling.
