  1. Contents are comprehensive and informative, helping our (expanded) family to plan a visit to Boston. It'll be put to the "acid" test the week of July 4.

  2. This is a very good guide book in its comprehensiveness, ease of use, helpful "star" rating system and special effort to make note of good family activities/locations. If you have kids, this is a great choice! However, because this book is written by one author, I don't find it equally strong in every category. But overall, it's very good and I recommend it!

  3. This is a good book, especially for someone visiting Boston for the
    1st time.

  4. It has many useful reviews of hotels in the area that helped me to make a decision as to which one to stay in. There are also many maps with various themes such as restaurants, hotels, and attractions.

  1. Hey! I like 'em. I've used these books for most of my trips for many years and they really are unmatchable time savers. ... With these books there is enough detail to find the feature you are looking for, yet not overly detailed as to require a lot of page flipping. ...To use as a fine detail map for driving they give terrific information about which streets to take. We used ours to try to negotiate the traffic at rush hour in Salem, Mass. ... The book was able to show us alternatives to avoid the worst of it. I also like the DelOrme software on my computer. ...

  2. If you're going to Salem, this atlas is worthless!!!! I don't understand the other reviews mentioning Salem, very misleading. They must be talking about another atlas because it's almost as if they show Salem as an afterthought. There are two tiny sections of Salem in this atlas. One section cuts Salem in half with no detail & the other is at the edge of the page so you basically, again, see no detail. That's just it, as historic as Salem is, you want detail. I don't understand why there wasn't a page dedicated to just Salem & surrounding towns. I was very disappointed.

If you're going to Boston, this atlas is VERY detailed. I'll definitely use it then but don't go by the other reviews if you plan on going to Salem. Get another atlas.

  3. This book of topographic maps are terrific for anyone interested in fishing, hunting, hiking, camping or any other outdoor activity in Massachusetts. Roughly forty maps cover the entire state, and the maps show roads, streams, ponds, rivers, mountains, state parks, etc. There is also a list of parks, campgrounds, wildlife managed areas, etc. in the front of the book, as well as a collection of historic sites, tourist attractions, public golf courses, etc. There are zoom-ins of a few of the biggest cities (i.e. Boston and some of the burbs), but this is really not a great resource if you want to navigate through the cities. If your interest is to find out which road will take you closest to the stream where you want to fish or the pond where you want to set up a duck blind, this book can't be beat. If you are looking to find a restaurant in Boston, you could use these maps in a pinch, but I'd recommend you look elsewhere. An indispensable resource for outdoor adventures, usable but less than perfect resource for urban adventures.

  4. Includes all the necessary details. We had been using AAA maps but they don't show most small-town streets and other details that this book shows. If you plan on wandering away from the major highways and interstates, this book is all you'll need. Our New Hampshire version has a sun-faded cover and curling pages, but it's still as useful as ever.

  5. DeLorme map books are a tremendous resource. Not only do they have detailed maps, they have info on natural and historic sites, fishing, camping and more.
These books should belong to anyone who likes to travel, be it near or far!

  1. This is a gem of a book. Has good descriptions of hikes on segments of the AT. You can go as far as you can walk or take a few hours to hike. Good maps and assessments of terrain.Lets you match the hike with your abilities. Interesting social and historic notes, it makes you think about how the wilderness has evolved to once again take back what were cleared and settled areas, traces of which remain. Clear directions. Fits nicely in backpack.

  2. This book is awesome for guiding your adventures on the lower New England AT. The book has all the info you need on trails, shelters, water sources, and parking. There are also elevation maps and recommended routes to take. The only feature that I thought was not super were the small topo/contour maps. Streams were not easy to see on the maps and the fidelity of the maps could have been a bit better. I purchased the ATC Connecticut/Mass. maps which are awesome. This is the book I will go to every time I want to take a trip on the AT in this lower New England area.

  1. This is a very unusual product and I would strongly encourage anyone considering getting one to be completely aware of what it is before they purchase it. First, if you are looking for a single travel guide to prepare you for your trip to New York (or anywhere else there is a guide for), this is very close to worthless, if not entirely worthless. I would call one's attention to the title of the product. It is a "Notebook." That means that most of the pages are blank. This literally is a book for taking notes in.

So what do you get when you buy this? Every book in the series follows the same format. First there is a personal information page with address, phone, allergies, family doctor, passport number, then map information with public transportation maps. Then follows information on the various forms of transportation with phone numbers and websites, including cabs, buses, other forms of public transportation, and airports. There are some blank itinerary pages, measurement and speed conversion charts, size conversion charts (for shoppers), then a long series of neighborhood maps, including an index. And that's it. The final two-thirds of the notebook are blank. The next 20 or so pages are completely blank and unlined for whatever use you want to put them to. Next come several pages intended for writing down names of restaurants, bars, museums, historical sites, hotels, or whatever. The book also comes with unlabeled tabs with stickers to use as desired (for theaters, concert halls, or whatever you desire) as well as tracing paper for, as the label says, "Itineraries or Whatever." Finally, there is the usual pocket at the back that is found in all Moleskine products.

For some people this is going to be an absolutely useless product. But for many this will be remarkably useful. In fact, I can envision two uses for this notebook. First, those who are planning a trip to one of the places for which Moleskine has produced a book. Let's say one has consulted the Blue guide, the Eyewitness Guide (by DK), a Rough Guide, the Michelin guide, and the Let's Go guide. Maybe you've bought all of these, making for five guides. No way do you want to drag all of these on your trip or more than one on your flight. So what might you do? You might take the Moleskin Notebook, record into it all the places you want to see, restaurants you want to dine at, museums you want to stroll through, and anything else you want to do while in your destination of choice, and record it there. So the Moleskine City Notebook can serve as a distillation of all the various travel guides, web sites, and other resources you have consulted. And instead of hauling about a large Fodor's guide, you can carry about this small Notebook that can easily fit into a backpack, purse, should bag, or even pocket.

The only downside is that the Moleskine City Notebook is only as good as you make it. If you do a good job of planning your trip, it will be filled to the brim with useful and helpful information. If not, it will be as unhelpful as you have made it.

There is a second use to which the City Notebook can be put to use, though it is not one for which it was primarily designed. You could use it for the city in which you live, should you live in one of the cities for which one is made. I live, for instance, in Chicago. I have bought one of these so that I can over time use it to record every bit of helpful information that I might find useful or helpful. I can record what hours the Seminary Co-Op Bookstore (the real one, not the trade version on 57th Street) is open. The hours for the Chicago Public Library and the Newberry Library. Phone numbers of restaurants and addresses of bars. And so on and so forth. Granted, these books will only benefit those who live in one of those cities, but for the U.S. New York, Chicago, Boston, Washington D.C., Seattle, San Francisco, and Los Angeles are pretty populated areas.

So this is a very well conceived product though it absolutely has to be stressed that it is a specialized one. Please note: THIS ISN'T FOR EVERYONE. If you don't want to use the Notebook to plan your trip it is going to be very close to worthless. I'll emphasize again: this is only as good a product as you make it. But if you use it to help you plan your trip, it could be the single item you would most loathe to be without after your notebook.

  2. I understand the previous reviewer's insightful comment, but I don't see why anyone needs to buy a $15 notebook to record usefull information. For that purpose, one can easily buy a Mead notebook, Franklin Covey planner, or heck, just get a stack of 500 sheet Office Max blank paper.

  3. I bought the planner for a surprise trip to Boston for my husband. I found there to be so many great resources on the incredible city, but I was printing out page after page of information and wasting paper. The Boston moleskine gave me a place to write down all the great information I was finding in one place. The maps with clear overlays are perfect because I was able to map out our route from the train station to the show to the restaurant to local attractions. We weren't lost for a minute! At one point we got off the train and noticed another couple lost. Turns out they were going to the same attaction we were and in the middle of a snow storm we were able to navigate them as well. They were so impressed with the travel notebook that they said they would get one next time they came to the city. Once your trip is over, it keeps all your memories in one place (in moleskine tradition there is a pocket and places to make notes).

This is a blank slate - so don't buy it if you are looking for extensive information. It is a well laid out book to put good information into. I saw the other comment about just buying a plain two dollar notebook - but a plain notebook won't come with the railsystem maps, maps of the city streets, and other useful information. This book allows you to enter your attractions but gives you information on the city itself.

We will be buying one of these for every trip we take to a place they offer.

  1. I am traveling to Boston each year for the last 15 years. I though that I know most of the city. Well, this book is a short and very informative city guide and you can read it without big "fuss".

  2. I just returned from my first trip from Boston (5 days of sight-seeing), and this book was priceless! It's compact, so I was able to easily carry it everywhere with me. The maps are terrific, and it gives just enough information about each attraction, restaurant, etc. to help you decide if you want to include it on your itinerary. The descriptions of each location are concise and accurate. I found the ratings to be helpful and accurate, too. There are great suggestions no matter what your interest--for shoppers, walkers, families with children, art lovers, history buffs, etc. I looked in my local bookstore at Boston travel guides before I left and decided on this one--it turned out to be a great choice!!

  3. I really liked the book.
Easy to use, clear, nice recommendations.
Small footprint - easy to carry.

As for the food - The author must be American. It doesn't stand in any other standards :-)

  1. This guide book is full of political opinions regarding land development policy on Cape Cod and short on reveiws of some major lodging and dining establishments. A great dissapointment and definately not up to Frommers standards. Dont waste your money - buy a different guide book! This is written by someone who is usually a huge Frommers fan.

  1. I have several Streetwise maps and this one was just as helpful as the others. I was able to sightsee and commute with no problems and I love the convience of the map!

  2. i rarely feel compelled to write reviews for products, and to be honest, they are usualy more of a warning than a compliment. this is the exception. twice now i have been traveling by myself in cities (Chicago and now Boston) and found my Streetwise map to be a far more acurate guide than my (very expensive and brand new) GPS navigator. i consider them indispensible whether i am traveling for business and need to quickly navigate like a native or just sightseeing.

great feature of this map-its laminated so you can write on it without ruining it. we had it on hand while visiting some friends and they took a dry-erase marker and circled fun place to go, numbered their priority (from can't miss to so-so) and even drew X's through areas to avoid. when we accomplished what we wanted for the day, we just wiped it off and started over.

in particular, i love the detail of these maps. several times i have been just around the corner from a fun shopping district or museum and would never have known if not for these maps-something my GPS fails to share with me. i have often been able to find shorter, savvier routes with these maps than what my GPS was indicating. even if you spent an obcene amount of money on one of these devices, i insist to everyone i know to supplement their travels with one of these maps. the GPS was $600, the streetwise maps was $6. you do the math.

  3. The laminated Boston street map is clear and gives a wide range of Boston's different districts and streets in those areas. It gives a visitor to Boston an idea on where to stay and sightsee.

  4. I was excited to take this map with us to Boston but found it hard to read because the print was so small. In fact, I ended up sticking it in my purse and not using it at all because the map that the hotel's shuttle driver gave us was so much better. That map's print was large and in bright colors so it was easier to use. It was dog-eared at the end of the trip but it went in the trash because we no longer needed it anyway.

  5. This map has a lot of information packed into a small space. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to read. We took this to Boston for a week-long honeymoon and actually used the cardstock-printed map from the Concierge's desk. We primarily used this to figure out the T (Boston's subway system) stops.

The lamination, though, is a plus because you can write on it with a grease pencil.

All in all, there are much better on the market that are not as difficult to read.

  1. This is an excellent guide to Boston. The best part is a guide to the public transportation system which is essential in getting around. Boston is worse than Los Angeles to drive in. Just get a hotel near public transportation and search out art museums, go find great sea food or even Mexican restaurants, have a wonderful time.
