  1. We are new to Florida and had little time to cover many different areas. I found the atlas to be very useful and the fun tips were entertaining as well. The spiral bound format helped to keep it from getting crumpled up like all our other atlases. I would definitely recommend this version.

  2. My wife and I are planning a trip to Florida in April. I have done a lot of research and I did not find this book useful at all. In fact, my wife is mad at me for buying it and wants me to return it. It is not user friendly so don't waste your money folks...learn from my mistake...

  1. If you need a general overview of the area and the roads, this map is great. If you need a map of the small island keys, then this won't help much as the keys have changed a lot since the last two hurricanes. If you need a map of the island keys, I recommend getting the most recent navigational map that you can.

  1. I have used Streetwise Maps alll over the world -- literally -- and they have NEVER disappointed me. Super, super accurate. Whether I plan to drive or to be on foot, I would not visit any new city (including Miami) without my Streetwise Map.

  1. We used this small folding map as we walked around Key West. It served its purpose well, but it lacked a lot of details that would have been useful along the way. All in all, we're happy with it.

  1. This book is truly the only one of its kind for identifying sports fish in Florida waters, and provides great information. The one problem I had with the book was the same as everyone else, which is the poor quality of the binding and construction of the book. Otherwise, I recommend it to every Florida fisherman.

  2. Don't know what the problem is others are having with their editions, mine's held up just fine. Of course, I leave mine on board when I dive in to spearfish, and I tend to avoid submerging it when I stay on to drop a line in the water, but even when some water has hit it, it's stayed fine. No problem. That's going on quite some time too.

That said, this is an outstanding resource. You simply cannot do wrong by getting ANY book Vic has done. I have grown up with his books, and still have his Pacific, Gulf, Fresh Water and Bait, Rigs and Tackle books in my library. They are absolutely invaluable and provide the best source of downright no-nonsense information I've ever found, this side of my father and grandfather.

Do yourselves a favor and get this without hesitation. It gets no better than these.

  3. This book is an awesome guide for those who fish these waters. I just got back from a week of fishing in the Bahamas and the book was invaluable. My partner and I were able to make quick assessments on the food quality of the variety of fish we caught. We threw back the ones that were dangerous or bad for a meal. The upshot is we fed a lot of happy folks while avoiding the perils of ciguatera. Can not recommend this book enough....wish there was one just like it for California.

  4. nice pictures,
    great descriptions

  5. I think the book is pretty good. The pictures are detailed and colorful, then it gives the basic lowdown on all the fish, and I really like that it gives you at least an idea of edibility. I also liked that they included a section for freshwater fish. I kind of wish it could have talked more about typical methods to catch the different fish, but I guess the book can't have everything..Overall a great book.

5 comments about Sport Fish of the Gulf of Mexico.
  1. If your trying to find out what is on the end of your line... I would suggest this book. It has good illustrations of many fish and a few other interesting facts about them. It also covers the whole gulf area rather than selecting a state or two. The only draw back is it doesn't include great detail on how to catch each particular fish.

  2. This book is well written and nicely cross referenced. When it's not on my boat during a fishing trip, it stays in the throne room for good reading. The only complaint I have is that the author seems to think nearly every fish in the sea is tasty. Only a few of the fish in the book are labeled as "Poor" when it comes to food quality.

  3. I enjoyed reading each and every species entry. The author is obviously a fish enthusiast when it comes to cuisine due to the fact that 90% of the animals he lists are described at the very least as 'tasty'. The illustrations are exquisite and the descriptions for each fish type are thorough. I would recommend this book for anyone new to fishing the Gulf of Mexico.

  4. With so many restrictions and diffrent types of fish in the gulf, the last thing you want is an illegal fish. "Sport Fish of the Gulf" is on my vessel when I fish!

  5. After shopping for a book of this nature, I got tired of the book store prices and was glad when I found it at Amazon.com. Shortly after placing my order, I found it at Wal-Mart for about $7.00 more. Always Low Prices should be Amazon's slogan. Great book to own with great details such as: food quality, how to fish for, avg. size and weight etc.

  1. I use this book occasionally, but it is lacks the detailed for use by itself. Where I do use it is with mapquest, that tends to not show the smaller lakes, but the Gazetteer does a much better job.

  2. Easy to read and use, invaluable when traveling in city or hiking in rural areas. Very detailed, provides names of area sites that are interesting to stop by, which are not included on road maps.

  3. A bit difficult to handle (size). Good enough to use in your car.

  4. This book has it all! My hubby just entered the boating world, and this book is a great guide to rivers, campsites, boat ramps, and more. A must have if you are the adventure type!

  5. I have purchased every updated version of this book for quite a number of years. In Florida, roads and public lands change constantly, so each new edition is like re-discovering my home state.

I also buy the books for North Carolina and Virginia.

5 comments about Drive I-95: Exit by Exit Info, Maps, History and Trivia.
  1. This book is great! Not only does it give the standard I95 exit information (restaurants, hotels, etc.) but it also gives many points of interest for families...rest areas where you can play ball or places not far from exits where you can have fun.
I can't believe how extensive this book is and how accurate since it's a few years old now and things they are a changin' along I95 North to South.
We really enjoyed this book along our trip - reading ahead of time is recommended so that you can be aware of places to stop before you get there.

  2. Drive I-95 by Stan Posner and Sandra Phillips-Posner has been released in updated 4th Edition. It is a very comprehensive guidebook for any drive along the North-South route of the United States most Eastward coastal highway. This edition now includes Florida. With maps, radar traps, radio stations, 24 hour gas info, good eats and sleeps, where pets are welcomed, unususal shopping opportunities, fun places to visit, and fascinating historical facts along the route, you cannot leave home for that highway without this book! You'll miss so much! The excellent book, with exit by exit itemized information, has won the Book of the Year Seal, Best Books Award, and Benjamin Franklin Award. It is compact and sturdy enough to tuck into your car door pocket. EXCELLENT!!!

  3. As someone who travels I-95 often, I was delighted to discover "Drive I-95." What a valuable tool for the vacationer or the everyday traveler!

This slick, spiral book is an ideal guide to everything you need to help make your trip more pleasant. Exits for every segment of I-95 from Massachusetts to the tip of Florida, where I-95 ends, are documented with important landmarks, motels, restaurants/fast food places, service stations, and drug and grocery stores. A book flap gives the dial location and program types for the strongest radio stations along the way. Following the map section, the traveler will find more than 100 pages of interesting tidbits concerning history and places found near I-95. These include segments, with exit numbers, about the Torpedo Factory Art Center, located in Alexandria, VA; Gadsby's Tavern (an historic restaurant at the same exit); St. John's Church in Richmond, VA where Patrick Henry gave his famous speech about liberty or death; the Best Western Space Shuttle Inn; Outlets at Vero Beach, FL; Worth Ave. in Palm Beach, FL and much more. The back inside cover has a list of motel chain 800 numbers.

Drive I-95 is a treasure you will want to keep in your car as you travel from Boston to Miami and lots of places in between. What a great idea!

--Mary Montague Sikes, author of Hotels to Remember

  4. Now in a fully updated fourth edition, "Drive I-95" continues to be the premier guidebook for the more than 42,500,000 people who drive to Florida every year down Interstate 95. It accurately charts all 552 exits on I-95 from Boston to Miami. It is also a wealth of information about food options, motels, radar traps, radio stations, 24-hour mechanics (a unique feature not found in other travel guides) ATM machines, shopping recommendations, and even some of the best golf courses to be found along the route. With anecdotal stories such as the Ava Gardner Museum in Smithfield, North Carolina having been started with a kiss, to a listing of motel chain 800 numbers, to so much more, "Drive I-95" continues to be the premier and confidently recommended travel guide for anyone driving up or down I-95!

  5. Haven't had time to actually use this book so far but my sisters. one of whom has used an older version of this book in the past, used theirs recently while traveling north. They found it very helpful in locating places to eat and stay overnight. We did notice however that one or two of the eating places in our own area of Santee are no longer in business.

I hope to get my chance to use it shortly.

  1. I expected more information about particular species and their habits and what rigs to use. The book was VERY general. Good for a beginner but lacking detail in what others beyond this level might want. It has a thorough explanation about knots.

Again- good for beginners but not what I was looking for or expected.

  2. This manual is a great starter. It has general information about all aspects of fishing, fresh water and salt, spinning casting and trolling, even fly fishing.
However it left me a little uninformed with specifics for certain regions and technique. Which I cannot totally agree with as a "Comlete" book of rigs and tackle.
It is however a great purchase for the fisherman who is just getting started or for a gift for that aspiring fisherman who needs or desires information on a wide variety of setups and general techniques.
I would give it 5 star review as an aforementioned gift or purchse in that case.
    ciao, Scott

  3. The book is a very good general guide to use of equipment and techniques for different kinds of fishin. The knot tying section is particularly enlightening and worth the price for that alone. It will be useful as a handbook to take along fishing or when choosing equipment to buy.

  4. I bought this book to learn about knots and it has been very good. Hopefully I will progress in my fishing and will get more use from the book.

  5. This book is handy to have around or in your tackle box. Gives good information on baits and rigs. The illustrations are very good and advice is sound. I recommend it for all to have as a reference book.
