  1. I just bought the film to add to my Jim Kelly collection, otherwise, it sucked and was so low budget.

  1. ok this move is funny but the only good action is at the end and it is mosle fist fiting no using odd objects like a lader ect but the fiting at the end was wiy it got a 3 not a 1. If you like the odd objects that he fits with than this move is not for you but than agin this is my opion not yours

  2. This is a great movie, and it has a wonderful plot. The humor is dead-on, and I really enjoyed the action in it. Might not be one of the movies you watch to see just Jackie, but it's wonderful to see Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao (though he's not in it very much) and Jackie Chan working together. The acting is good, and it's great to watch in subtitles or voice-over. I'd suggest anyone who's a fan of Jackie Chan or of Chinese import action-comedy movies to buy this movie. You won't regret it.

  3. I this is a very good movie written by Sammo Hung I must say this it is a very childish movie! As it was was made to be this is the considerd the second movie in the very long series that just continues. actully the series borrows from Winners and sinners(considerd to be the first) but isn't also Pom Pom borrows from winners and sinners. Most of this movie is about nothing but jokes about grooping and rapeing women. I dont want to say too much about this movie becuase I want you to watch it but first one must watch winners and sinners. Kang Jack sang is only in the first 3 movies a little sammo comes in and out from time to time after the first three but it is a stupid movie and if you dont like those dont watch the movie but I love sammo hung he is a great actor and writer he just never got as huge as Kang Jack Sang(Jakie Chan) Becuase he likes to share the spot light and isnt as selfcentered as Kang Jack Sang.

    Richard eing funny funny man
Yuen Baio great stunt guy and actor I think never got famious but needs a hand used to do a lot of Kang Jack sang's (JACKIE CHAN'S) stunts ALL THE TIME but never got the credit.

I like some of Kang Jack Sang's movies but I don't respect him as a person

  4. This movie is just like Winners and Sinners and it is actually sort of a sequel. In Winners and Sinners Yuen Biao has about 30 seconds of screen time and has a good fight in his extremely limited role. He is in this one for maybe 3 minutes and somehow seems to fight even less!

Curly gets replaced by a stupid little kid type of character but as stupid as he looks, Sammo manages to make all of the characters pretty likeable. Charlie Chin(On the Run) had a great scheme in Winners and Sinners where he would go into a jewerly store, ask to see a diamond ring, go up to a random person, act like the person is their friend, go to shake their hand but really put a fake gun in their hand, and right as he gives the person the gun it goes off and he has blood packets ready and runs off out of the store with the diamond ring acting like he really got shot. I never got enough of that gag! Well Sammo certainly can't top that but all of the characters are just as enjoyable as Winners.

So the story is not really that important. Muscles(Jackie Chan) and Yuen Biao are looking for this defective cop at the start of the movie and Biao ends up being kidnapped(Don't worry, you see him again 80 minutes later). So Jackie says he needs his fat friend(Sammo) to help him on this mission of getting his friend back and also getting back contraband diamonds. Sammo says he needs his friends to come with and he will be mroe than happy to help. Next we get a very nice looking woman to work with them and the boys get to play games with her for the next 30 minutes. Finally at the end Jackie meets back up with Sammo and we get a great final fight. THERE IS NO ACTION IN THIS MOVIE UNTIL THE FINAL FIGHT!! We get a punch or two from Jackie and Yuen Biao at the start but literally nothing else until the end! And what an end it was. Jackie vs. DIck Wei, an AWESOME chick fight, and of course with Sammo as the main star of the movie, he gets some of his best fight scenes ever.

Sammo's jokes are sort of hit and miss just like in Winners and Sinners but when they are pulled off it is guaranteed you will be laughing for a while.

  5. Im a spoiled fan of Chan in Western flicks, and was expecting more of the same. Wrong. The characters and plot were sophomoric and mostly a clumsy attempt at Three-Stooges type comedy. Example - when not in their black "uniform," the scowling bad Ninjas appear in 50's style zoot-suits and broad-brimmed hats (except the sexy female baddie). The two main fight scenes (very early, and at the end) totaled about 10-15" and were classic Chan. Otherwise, a much better investment of time and bucks is Li's "Fearless."

  1. This product was in great condition and arrived earlier that I had expected. Thank you.

  2. Amazon has great customer service. The Bruce Lee Collection was new- still in its original packaging and still at a great price.

  3. This is easily one of the best investments to my collection, I mean 4/5 of bruce lee's movies, and a documentary.

Now fisrt of all, all of these movies are the original dub and very watchable picture.

Fist of fury(Big Boss)----- very fun movie with bruce beating up a lot of people. The end fight is prettygood because it was so authentic. Pai ying is the man, he is also the action coordinator on this.

Chinese Connection(Fist Of Fury)------ One of the best movies of all time. Great fight scenes(check it out when he takes on the whole gym), great score, great acting, hell, even Lo wei is an actor in this movie, and he is pretty freaking good.

Return of the dragon(enter the dragon) directed by bruce lee, action directed by bruce lee, and starrign bruce lee. Come on bruce, you could have put your name as composer too. This movie kicks ass, better than big boss, but not as good as chinese connection. Everyone knows this is the one where bruce fights chuck norris at the end. And it is everythign it is made out to be, certainly not the best though.

Game of death---this is your classic case of fastforwarding kungfu cinema. The fight scenes are pretty good, but a VERY FORGETTABLE story.

Documentary-------very good doc. that talks a lot about what bruce was planning for game of death(sounds sweet), and what other characters he wa experimenting with for hsi future movies. Can you believe he had a blind swordsman idea in mind for himself. There is a lot of other important info also. 5/5 for the documentary, good for any bruce fan.

So I have seen this at cd tradepost for 14.99, and 19.99 at Best buy, so I don't know where the hell that $38 price comes from.

  4. i bought this set at a used dvd store for $15.00 and was very happy to find it. watching it i was struck by how much talent and energy this man had! had he lived he would have one of the most bankable stars in the world.to be sure these are low buget action movies, but mr. lee brought a style to them that no other actor could have brought, his every move was a graceful and well thought out move, even just walking down the street. these are all the films he made(except for enter the dragon which he made for warner bros.) and he shines in them all,(game of death the movie he was making when he died is very weak and only comes alive when they use the footage of him that was shot) and if you love lee or good kung-fu movies this is one to own

  5. This is a fine collection of Bruce Lee classics!

It's not the best thing since sliced bread...but it's close.

5 comments about Shaolin Wooden Men.
  1. I agree with the other reviewers who said the Columbia-Tristar veriosn cuts out so many good moments (what WERE they thinking!?!?!)! I have the English dubbed version, and it's pretty good - I'd recommend it to all kung-fu movie-philes (and especially Chan-o-philes!). The athletics are superb, although the film quality is not top-notch (it is, however, orders of magnitutde better than the "pea-green" situation with the Columbia release!!!!!!). it IS one to enjoy!

  2. REMEMBER WHEN JACKIE CHAN KICKED ASS? REMEMBER WHEN JACKIE CHAN WAS THE COOLEST MARTIAL ARTS STAR ALIVE? WELL, UNFORTUNATELY, THAT WAS BEFORE HE GOT OLDER AND BEFORE HE STARTED POPPING UP IN HORRIBLE MOVIES LIKE ''AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS'' AND ''SHANGHAI NOON''. IN THIS CLASSIC MARTIAL ARTS MOVIE FROM THE 1970S, JACKIE CHAN PLAYS A YOUNG MAN WHO'S CONSTANTLY HAUNTED BY THE FACT THAT HE WITNESSED HIS FATHER'S MURDER. AFTER LEARNING SEVERAL STYLES OF MARTIAL ARTS FROM SEVERAL DIFFERENT PEOPLE [INCLUDING A PRISONER WHOM HE BRINGS FOOD TO EVERYDAY IN EXCHANGE FOR KUNG FU LESSONS], HE SOON SETS OUT TO FIGHT THE WOODEN MEN AND AVENGE HIS FATHER'S MURDER. A VERY GOOD MARTIAL ARTS MOVIE THAT HAS MEMORABLE FIGHTS, WHICH'RE ALWAYS FUN TO LOOK AT. THE MOVIE'S WORTH IT ALONE FOR THE CLASSIC CONFRONTATION BETWEEN JACKIE CHAN AND THE WOODEN MEN.

  3. If you want UNCUT ORIGINAL version, ALWAYS look for ORIGINAL LICENSED Production. NOT US Release. Its a foreign film, it should not be US version to begin with~! HELLO!!!?? Why settle for LESS with US Version where they edit and cut so many excellent scenes especially with Jackie's Fighting Scenes. And US Release ruins the speed and sound as well. I have been collecting Jackie Chan's movies both HK and US Release Version for quite some time now. I found HK Version to be MUCH MORE in enjoyable, and HIGHER in Quality. American Market always like to "Americanize" and "Control". Regional Code Regulation thing is one of the example to CONTROL the Market. Why not let everyone enjoy the same HK Original Release move the same way ENTIRE WORLD enjoys it ?? No one makes Hollywood American movies to "French version" or "Chinese Version" ~! This what Americans are doing~! Well, enjoy the cheap "American version" then~! LOL

  4. Shaolin Wooden Men was the second film Jackie Chan did for Lo Wei Productions and the first film he did under director Chen Chi-Hwa (who also directed Jackie in Half a Loaf of Kung Fu) - though Lo would get Supervising Director credit. Chan was lent out to this up-and-coming director who would give him more room to experiment. Jackie gave more effort on his martial art styles by mutating traditional forms like the snake form (one of Jackie's favorites) giving more flowing and flamboyant movement and being less classical in structure. Unfortunately, he did not have much say in his character development with a character that was still in Bruce Lee's shadow. Shaolin Wooden Men was considered the second flop in a row for a Jackie Chan led film.

Jackie played a mute young man (called Dummy in the dubbed version) whose father She Lan was killed by an unknown assailant. I've read a couple of different rumors on why Chan was mute in this film: to make it easier on him acting and the other rumor was that Lo did not have confidence in his acting skill. Jackie's character has sworn revenge and to increase his martial artist skills he becomes an earnest student in a Shaolin monastery. He has trouble at first adjusting to monk life. Such activities as using lead shoes to carry water up and pour in barrels and chopping wood was difficult for the mute but he would note be prevented from learning Shaolin martial arts. It would normally take five years of this training before he could start on his fighting training, but the mute was crafty. He learned balance techniques from a drunken monk (Miu Tak San). He befriended a visiting female Buddhist named Nun Woo Mei (Cheung Bing Yuk) who taught him "Ten Shadows Eight Steps" to make him lighter on his feet. Several scenes of this technique reminded me of several of Missy Elliot's videos.

In order to leave the Shaolin monastery Jackie would have to pass a test of fighting. He would have to go through a gauntlet of mechanized Wooden Men (strangely looking like a Monty Python gag) that many monks with more advanced training that the mute have failed. The mute was lucky in finding a Shaolin prisoner who befriended him and in exchange for food and wine would train him. Fa Yu (Kam Kong) is a curmudgeon character who says he is only captured until he learns "The Lion's Roar" which will shatter the internals of his enemies (or at least provide a cheesy sound effect.) He taught the mute several techniques which would help him pass the gauntlet as well as improve his fighting prowess.

The Shaolin Wooden Men only play a small part of this film. The mute inevitably passes the test and burns the dragon and tiger insignias into his forearms by lifting a searing hot cauldron that marks the opening into freedom and the beginning of his travails. First he must deliver a message from Fa Yu to a gimpy pharmacologist who owns the Tsun Chung Pharmacy in the town of Ching Ho who is part of the Green Dragon and White Tiger gangs. This pretty much establishes Fa Yu with those gangs and the rest of the film deals with the (other) inevitable aspects of his escape and why he was imprisoned by the Shaolin.

The martial arts are above standard, but not as good as the later Jackie Chan films. Though the final fight sequence does last awhile and is the highlight fight of the film. The plot is a martial art cliché with a student enrolling in a Shaolin Academy to learn Kung Fu to avenge the death of his father. There is also the ubiquitous training manual "Justice against the Devil" given to Jackie by a blind monk. However, the relationship between the mute and his teacher Fa Yu is an interesting angle reminding me of the relationship of Yuen Biao and Lau Kar Wing in Knockabout. Chan seems a little unsure of his acting ability, even without voice, but he always looks professional with the martial art choreography. I think most people will like the later Jackie Chan films better, but if you find a decent copy of this film they will think it is a decent film -- though not much better. Note: look for an early small speaking role for Yuen Biao.

DVD Info: Choosing the right copy is also important. I own two different copies of the film both with their own problems. The Columbia copy reigns in about 96 minutes though it misses 10 minutes of the beginning. These ten minutes are very fun to watch. It includes the "showcase" beginning with Jackie fighting four monks each with a different animal style. It then includes his character having a nightmare dealing with the Shaolin Python Wooden Men and then a sequence showing normal life at the Shaolin temple. The Columbia version is also cropped to a 1.78 aspect. The line on the DVD about preserving the original aspect is hooey. The benefit of this DVD is that it has the Mandarin soundtrack and good subtitles. The second version I own is the Telefilms Internation DVD (also R1 and also hooey about being the Original Uncut Version) which has the original aspect, a more clear screen and the beginning that is missing in the Columbia version. This version is missing ten minutes that are in the Columbia version though it cost me only two dollars. It is missing any extras like subtitles or other languages. So the best thing to do is look for a copy that has 106 minutes or over, is not cropped and is not R1.

  5. Jackie stars as a mute who has grown up at a Shaolin monastery since he was a boy and trains to become a fighter so he can revenge his father's death one day. He meets a prisoner played by Kam Kong, one of the most likeable kung fu actors ever. He develops a strong relationship with Jackie and helps him with his training so he can beat the Shaolin wooden men and leave the monastery. Jackie taking on the robot like wooden men was actually exciting because of his great acting and kung fu skills. This movie is definitely one of his best physical performances. There is a lot more to the story and it all results in an incredible emotionally charged ending.

It was great to see Jackie giving such a different type of acting performance, but the kung fu is of course the brightest spot in the movie. Kam Kong is a large man and can do some amazing kung fu with that big frame. I wish him and Jackie would have fought more in movies.

I love cheesy movies, but this is the complete opposite. There is no cheese to be found, it's just a very good kung fu movie.

    3.5/5

I have the DVD from Telefilms International and it's watchable. Hong Kong Legends just released this uncut, but I don't know of any other uncut versions.

  1. First let's be real, this is a television drama so the pace is very slow. Out of say 1600 minutes of film is practically only 120 minutes of fighting scaterred throughout. That said it is truly a Martial Arts Movie Collector's must-have if only to see Gordon Liu perform the rarely seen Dragon Fist portion of Hung Ga. But rest assured that's not all! The combat version of Pa Gua Chuan is on display here as well as the title's Yong Chun (Wing Chun). Sammo Hung's son Sammy does an excellent job both acing and fighting. Now, for the other drawback. The subtitles are really quite bad. First if there are more than 2 lines written the yellow type gets lost in the picture. Second the translation of the honorary titles are just flat wrong in many places where "teacher" and "master" are translated as "Mr." and even in some places "Dr." Third, while I don't speak Cantonese, this leads me to suspect that so much of what is being said is also either wrongly or badly translated. Enough so that Tai Seng should issue an apology to the producers of the series. I understand that translators have to decide whether or not to translate the words or the meaning of what is being said but even my poor understanding of Cantonese caught some flat wrong translations in dialog. Yet for the eyes this is still going to be one of my "strongly reccommended" movies.

  2. Good series and filmed well. My reason for giving 3 stars instead of 5 are:

Though title is Wing Chun, the series only contains about 25%, maybe even less, directly realted to Wing Chun or Martial Arts in general. The rest is like a soap opera drama. Though interesting series, if you are expecting all Martial Arts this is not for you.

Also, it is too long. Just goes on and on and on. They could have condensed this series into about half the length and it would have been much better.

Good sets and takes you back in time to 1920s China, though how historically accurate I do not know.

Again, would be a great series to watch if it was much shorter in length.

  1. but a little weak on plot and realism of fight scenes. I liked it and put it just a little below Dragon's Inn but certainly way better than most Kung Fu DVDs (for example all 15 or so Wu Tang Clan Kung Fu DVDs I have seen to date). You get what you pay for, and the relatively high price for this DVD is worth it, in this viewers opinion.

  2. This movie talks about Brigitte Lin's parents are killed when the bad guys try to snatched their "Deadful Melody" skill. Brigitte Lin survived and vowed to take revenge using "Deadful Melody" skill. Overall, the fighting scenes are nice and Brigitte Lin gave a good performance. Not a bad pop corn movie.

  3. I have seen a lot of Chinese flicks and I can tell you that this a very good film. I have seen and own storm riders (wasn't impressed, but a good film), the duel, Dragon Inn, Magnificent Butcher, Wing chun, a man called hero, and 5 deadly venoms or return of 5DV, and this belongs in same class. The action was not hard to follow. I knew who was getting decapitated, or dismembered. Anyone tells you that the action is weak, is also referring to before mentioned films also. Bridget lin is so beautiful, WOW!

  4. I loved this as a classic kung-fu revenge click. Brigitte Lin is as beautiful as ever even when throwing her icy stare of death. She is a tremendous actress. I've never known many actresses that can act without speaking as Brigitte can with her facial expressions. Yuen Biao gives a strong performance.
The fight scenes are pretty good. When will they ever get the title right - it's "Deadly Melody."

  5. And I am serious man. I don't want to give anything away, but this thing is insane. We don't get to see all the beautiful movements people are doing like bride with whit hair, but we get an extremely weird action movie that has people dying like by the tens. There is a part where I am prett sure the exploding heart thing from kill bil comes in to play. If someone knows where tarantino could have gotten this, tell me cause this is from like 93 and is the first reference I have seen of it. And it is WAY cooler than what happen in kill billy. So overall b lin is just too beautiful not too watch her and yuen biou gets to show off some of his acrobatics and gives a mre than solid acting performance. And the music is REALLY good. They don't play it enough but it is REALLY freaking awesome. When brigitte fights the special effects are really weak but the bodies being blown up are super cool. So don't expect fist of legend here type of action, but a lot more akin to butterfly sword, it;s just brigitte wasn't in that and with EVERYBODY underused, I would say this movie is far superior.

The dvd I got IS NOT a special edition, so maybe when you buy them from the new used section you just don't get what the picture is but that's fine but this movie is worth it. It has BOOMING 5.1 sound. It has a pretty good picture, not perfectly widescreened but good enough. The picture quality is well above average and that is a good thing sice it has IMBEDDED FREAKING SUBTITLES. Luckily, there is seriously only like 1-2 lines I couldn't read. So unlike a movie that I bought form rarescope awhile ago, the imbedded subs on this are very good. I would compare the imb subs to magic crane if you have seen that. No special features but seeing the beauty of b lin and having to turn my speakers way down not to blow them, that was sweet.

  1. Ugh. My friend bought this on dvd the other day at a used video store. Why did he buy it? I have no idea. I knew it was gonna be bad news. So anyways, after playing some video games we decided to pop it in and give it a shot. I will regret that moment forever.
This is probably one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I used to talk about how much crap there is in American cinema, but after watching a few Hong Kong movies, there'e quite a bit of crap there too. This movie was plain AWFUL. Glossed over special effects which were ridiculous and pointless, stupid fight scenes, idiotic camera tricks, and a plot that was made up by a 4-year old. Don't buy this. Don't watch it. Stop reading this review and find something better to do.

  2. Being a fan of Hong Kong cinema, I must admit I bought this dvd with a certain amount of trepidation. This is because it broke new territory - and I must admit the special effects are really impressive. However, the most serious flaw is that the movie never seemed to combine the special effects with the kung-fu action, which I was screaming for all the way through. What a wasted opportunity! There is too much boy meets girl type nonsense going on for my liking. Maybe if they had a Jet li or a Donnie Yen on board they could have done something with this, but I doubt it. Perhaps in a few years time they might get the combination just about right. Until then its The Story of Ricky for me!

  3. If you like Hong Kong movies, if you like cute guys, if you lilke fighting, and if you like feature movies. Then this is one you don't want to miss out. Not too much actions like some others, a little love story, exciting movies.

  4. First time I watched this was on a bootleg poorly made, and I thought the film was awful. Second time was years later on the regular DVD sold here, and I really enjoyed it this time. The reasons for both reactions were the same: very B-movie with sensless fights with no real martial arts at all-only computer graphics and lots of blue screen scenes. However, if you think about it- not much difference in the non-motive fights same sort of reasons as in the old kung fu movies, and those fights were no more realistic since they were so afraid of hurting each other. Lack of good story-line, same thing. So what to enjoy? The general campiness and weirdness of it all, and the strong element of fun. No single element of this movie is very good, but all combined it is great entertainment and has lots of original ideas-not just repeats of older movies like most do. Sammo Hung has a great minor role in this. So does Yuen Biao, but he is not given any good lines or action, so not too good a role for him. The kids are the main focus, and they do exactly what they are supposed to. Not a bad science fiction theme also. I recommend this movie to anyone who likes good camp and science fiction.

  5. When I heard that "Avenging Fist" was going to be out on DVD, I had this grin on my face because of the "Tekken" hype surrounding the movie.

I finished watching "Avenging Fist" starring Ekin Cheng, Gigi Leung, Lee Hom Wang, Kristy Yeung, Sammo Hung, Stephen Fung and more.

Anyway, this movie has a lot of people you may have seen from many HK movies and a few big names which adds to the allure of the film. Also, the special effects are pretty cool and the futuristic look ala "Blade Runner" was very nice.

This movie is definitely not "Tekken", it's more like "Tekken", "Street Fighter 2" and "Dragon Ball Z" mixed together.

The only thing that "Tekken" has to do with this film is that it's a fighting movie (ala videogame like fighting movie) and the main character (Leehom Wang, the guy who played Aaron Kwok's partner on China Strike Force) has hair like Kazuya which is pretty cool. The only thing that "Street Fighter 2" has to do with it is the fighting characters and Combat-21 (think M. Bison, or if you are in East Asia think Vega). The only thing that "DBZ" has to do with this is the ending segment which is reminiscent of how DBZ ended with Goku's battle with Boo.

Anyway, the plot is humans can only use 10% of their brain. What would happen if humans can tap into the other 90% which is called the "Forbidden Zone". Anyway in the past: Thunder was a guy who perfect the martial art of the "Avenging Fist". As a police officer, he and two others - Dark and Combat 21 were chosen to test the power glove which would allow police officers to tap into the 90% but something goes wrong. Now it's twenty years later and Thunder's twins: Nova (Wang) and Belle (She was the female partner in "For Bad Boys Only") are twins that have special talents. Nova for fighting and learning his dead father's "Avenging Fist" and Belle with her power for producing heat. Nova never knew what happened to his father, his mother is not saying anything. Nova's goal is to have a "Power Glove" for himself, not knowing what it's for...just knowing that police officer's use it to kick butt. The day of his birthday, his mom has a surprise but Nova and Belle are in for a surprise when their father Thunder reappears.

If anything, people who love video games especially fighting video games or anime will love this movie. As for the DVD, it only comes with a trailer. No special features which sucks. But this is the first time I seen a DVD featuring DTS 6.1 and Digital Dolby EX on a HK DVD. Unfortunately, the movie doesn't feature great surround sound like GEN-X Cops but it's ok.

English subs are good but with the typical typos in HK film.

All in all a great film for those who enjoy video game fighting movies and anime. If you don't enjoy these type of movies, then you may want to pass.

5 comments about Dreadnaught.
  1. This is not your average kung fu classic, more of a comedy chase caper. Yuen Biao does his normal share of amazing stunts but what makes this film cool is the unique fighting styles and the endearing relationships between the bumbling protagonist and those around him. Not as hard hitting as YOUNG MASTER or MAGNIFICENT BUTCHER, this film is still a gem worth having in the finest of kung fu collections.

  2. Has fun comedy scenes but there are some grisly moments when the killer attacks. Great fight sequences and an entertaining and interesting application of Yuen Biao's "washing" style.

  3. This is a star-packed occasion, and when that happens, no matter what the genre, the end product is usually dissappointing. "Dreadnaught" is no exception. If I were rating this movie on kung fu alone - and if you are looking to add to an "old school" collection, this movie is not worthy - a single star(I beg to differ with an earlier reviewers). If you are looking for a decent movie with good acting (for a kung fu film)then this is not too bad. I will breakdown my rating a bit more:

    Original Chinese: gives one star
Old Wang Fei Hong: Great job - would've like to see him in more fight scenes. The same actor plays Wang Fei Hong in another movie (I wish I could remember the name here) and is much more active and creative. (star number 2)
    Decent Story: 1 star

Remember: If you are buying this as a gong fu flick - DO NOT BUY. Yuen Biao and Lueng Ka Yan have much, much better movies (Knockabout, The Victim)... you can actually buy both for the price tag on this film!

  4. i had the prevelige of seeing this film at a cinema in birmingham when it first came out and i was speechless its a top draw film in my opinion

  5. Yuen Biao stars as a young man who does not know kung fu, but he wants to become a disciple of Wong Fei Hung. His friend Foon (played by Leung Kar Yan) wants to help him out. Leung Kar Yan is just great in this movie. Phillip Ko stars, and wants to get rid of Wong Fei Hung's school. He hires a crazy killer played by Yuen Shun Yi to help him with his evil deeds. It's not a great story or anything, but it's passable. I was a bit disappointed with this movie, but with such a great cast and plenty of good fights, I can't really complain. I just wish the final fight was done differently. Having Yuen Biao not know kung fu hurt the movie, especially in the final fight. I had a good time watching this, but I would put Knockabout, Prodigal Son and at least a couple others far ahead of it as Yuen Biao's best movie.

    3.5/5

I have the Megastar version and the picture quality is good.

  1. Maybe I was expecting too much, but this was just a touch above average. It starts out incredibly with two Kung Fu experts composing a poem. The dialogue is humorous yet profound... then in walks a man with a metal hand who spars with another student, followed by an excellent fight between a Shaolin Monk and a random henchman (at this point I'm thinking "THIS IS GREAT"). Unfortunately neither the storyline nor the excellent gong fu of Golden Fox was enough to carry this movie to the classic level. The fighting receives a 5 star rating and IS a must have for any serious collection- BUT there is nothing else outstanding about this film. It actually reminds me of a toned down version of a much better film, Invincible Armour (a true classic).

PS- the audio is horrid!!! I had to turn my TV up all the way to hear the words only to have to turn it way down in other parts because of wild fluctuation in the sounds... it was good exercise though.

  2. As in the first Secret Rivals, John Liu's kicks are outstanding, however in this entry, the fight choreography is much better making for a much more exciting film.

  3. You never know what you are gonna get with this guy. He only directed my favorite movie ever---legend of a fighter. He also choreographed one of the worst movies---from china with death. I liked the 1st secret rivals much better and the guy who replaced don wong tao really ruined it for me. There is just too many stupid things that happened in this movie. I seriously wonder if Godfrey Ho took part in the writing of this movie.

  4. DEFINATELY TOO AMAZING,,,,THEN AGAIN I'M A JOHN LIU FAN SO NO MATTER WHAT HE DOES,,,,HIS PERFORMACE TO ME IS USUALLY GOLD!!

Definately a classic,,,I thing this one is equally as good as part 1. Be assured there will be no dissapoinment!!

  5. story better on the part 1
the person who recorded part shud be taken out and shot
