5 comments about Martial Arts Masters.
- I had prepared a long and insightful review of this DVD set, but then my computer crashed and I lost it before I could post it. And I don't feel like typing it up all over again. So just buy this DVD set will you! Its better than you think.
- the bruce lee part of this set is really just three movies that use clips of bruce so don't think your getting some of his best. that is the reason for the 4 star rating. the other movies are really fun martial arts movies with sonny chiba in them and they look good. so if you like these movies this is a really good set.
- It also has Streetfighter's revenge and the horrible Sister Street Fighter. To top it off they throw great movies like Shogun's Ninja and Fist of Fury in(aka the Big Boss). Throw in a couple of the worst movies ever to go along with it and you have every reason in the world to buy this. IT IS CHEAP. Amazon has it for 10 bucks. BUY THIS TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Adn if you have seen True Romance, this is THE trilogy featured in that movie. You just don't get any better than Sonny ripping that guys throat out. And has anybody ever figured out why that guy fights Chiba in EVERY one of their movies?
- Bruce Lee may be the photo on the cover, but there's only one Bruce Lee movie in this collection, Fists of Fury, and it looks like it was taken off an old print. You get vertical lines randomly appearing throughout the movie, and the sound won't work properly with a home theater system. You'd be better off just buying a watchable copy of Fists of Fury, and ignoring this.
- Got this as a gift, so I can't complain too much. However, the one real Bruce Lee movie in the set I already had a copy of. Mostly this is a collection of Sonny Chiba movies of mixed quality.
Some of the movies have been cropped to look like widescreen, but you can tell that they got cropped too much, cutting off part of words that were on the bottom of the screen and/or cutting off people's heads at the top of the screen. What's the point? They probably copied it from VCR and cropped it to fool people into thinking they are watching a digitally re-mastered movie. The cropping was particularly obvious on Shogun's Ninja, and Ninja Wars is obviously copied from VCR tape with a noisy sound track and occasional tracking lines. Honestly, I have duped better quality VCR copies on my home DVD recorder.
The best quality is The Street Fighter, which also seems to be the movie that made Chiba famous, mainly because it is so shockingly violent. There are scenes where he punches holes into people or pulls out hunks of their flesh from sensitive parts of their bodies. Very nasty. In fact, I read somewhere else that when the movie was first released in the U.S. they gave it an X rating because it was so violent.
Anyway, rule of thumb with these old martial arts movies seems to be that when you buy them in big collections you should not expect good quality. While it might sound good you are getting 14 hours of entertainment for small change, you should keep in mind that you always get what you paid for. So, set your expectations low with this collection.

2 comments about Shogun's Shadow: The Sonny Chiba Collection.
- the film starts out ok, as a saturday-morning action flick which is decent. unfortunately about halfway through the film i guess they said the heck with it and just went full-blown into full-on cheesiness. horrible pop music, horrible special effects, really it goes from an average period/action film to just unwatchable. first half of movie- 2 and a half stars
second half- 0 stars
- Originally titled "Geki Totsu: The Insanity of Emperor Iemitsu Gekitosu", "Shogun's Shadow" is a non-stop action film featuring Kyokushinkai master Sonny Chiba. This film is based on the true story of a shogun who sends his army, led by an assassin (played by Chiba), to kill his eldest son and make way for his younger son to be the next shogun.
Ogata Ken is the hero who leads a band of renegade ronin who escort the shogun's son to a meeting at Edo castle. His swordsmanship is a certainly match for Chiba's and the duel between them is very exciting to watch. Both are quick and skillful.
The incorporation of Chinese martial arts in this Japanese film adds another dimension, thanks to Hu Jianqiang, who plays the mute guide. A former all-around national champion of China, Hu also did some of the choreography, performed by members of Chiba's Japan Action Club. Generally, Japanese martial artists don't have much respect for Chinese martial artists, but Hu is an exception and is highly regarded by the Japanese martial arts community because of his strong gongfu.
As in most Asian martial arts films from the 70's and 80's, the cast performed their own stunts; some of them quite death-defying.
This film is probably not good for children as several horses are injured and possible killed during the making of it.

5 comments about Street Fighter/Return of the Street Fighter.
- Why was this movie so terrible? It started at first glance; the title. A Shogun is Japanese, whereas a Ninja is Chinese. A Shogun would never associate with a ninja, as ninja are without honor. A Shogun would only associate with Samurai.
Now we can get past this glaring error to the cheesy schlock that was the rest of this movie. From the soundtrack reminiscent of lower quality 70's porno flicks, to the unentertaining, poorly choreographed battles, poor acting, etc... do not waste precious minutes of your life watching this movie. After watching this movie I am honor-bound to commit Seppuku. Goodbye, cruel world.
- Don't get me wrong. I LOVE the story. I've seen it in the cinema in the 80's and I still love it. But the issue why I gave low ratings is because of the DVD. This is the first time I've seen a DVD where the makers of it, puts watermark images of the company in various scene in the movie. Talk about advertising!
Second, on the cover, it was written that the movie has undergone digital transfer. The only thing that I think, where the movie got it "digital transfer" is from a poor quality VHS tape to DVD. This is absurd! Even the soundtracks bear the quality of a bad tape recording.
I've watch other Sonny Chiba's movies from the 80's in DVD format like Ninja Wars and GI Samurai aka Time Slip and both quality is what a DVD should be. This one is clearly an attempt to make a quick money at the fans of the man.
The first 2 reviews, refers to other movies and not the one in question. To Amazon, please remove this item from your listing.
- Arguably one of the best and most violent martial arts films of its time, 'The Street Fighter" starring Sonny Chiba was the first film to be given a "X" rating because of its violent content. In a time when the majority of martial arts films were pretty much the same, "Street Fighter" featured some of the most violent images ever showcased in martial arts cinema. The movie stars Chiba as a ruthless assassin who as described by Christian Slater in True Romance, "pretty much gets paid to f--k guys up". This double-feature DVD not only includes the original uncut Sonny Chiba classic in its original widescreen format but also includes its first sequel. While it is light on special features, this is one of the best versions of either movie you can find on DVD. Not for the weak of heart.
- Critiquing the plot of this movie is pointless, likewise the acting, writing, cinematography etc. It's just one great fight scene after another. All the extraneous elements, such as the aforementioned few, are boiled away, leaving the distilled, pure essence of martial arts movies. But a little known fact is that Chiba studied directly under MAS OYAMA, creator of kyokushinkai karate. This is one nasty art. It cultivates the spirit but also emphasizes raw destructive power. The teacher character in the movie is an homage to Oyama, a genuine Master in the world of martial arts. So, at least one of the characters is based on a real person. Pretty cool!
- I wouldn't recommend paying 12+ dollars for it like i did(stupid major electronic store)..but getting it on here for less than $5 is worth it.There are plenty of ninja in it(if i remember correctly) and sonny chiba is cool as always...go ahead and buy it if you like real Japanese flicks.

5 comments about Karate for Life - The Sonny Chiba Collection.
- Sosai Masutatsu Oyama.....the legendary Japanese Karate Master who revolutionized Karate forever........The Japanese Famous Anime Karate Baka Ichidai has been released in Japan for decade. The story of Kyokushin Kaikan and its history. Ever since the Anime has been released in Japan, it has gained such popularity and fame of this Mas Oyama's Karate all over the nation. Today, it is THE most popular, and most practiced Japanese Karate Style in Japan, and world wide. Mas Oyama has passed away back in 1994. This film is based on his life, and character. This complete the trilogy which are both entertaining, and now classic. However, it is NOT a biography film. The Media 8, the Japanese Kyokushin Kaikan film production has produced tons of film about Mas Oyama as well as Every single All Japan, and World Open tournament footage which is only available in Japan. The latest Asian number one hit movie "Fighter in the Wind" from Korea is the closest it can get if you would like to see the biography based movie of Mas Oyama. However, it is not 100% accurate for some reason. It plays a little politic and prejudice. After all it is a movie, and has to entertain the audience. The "Figther in the Wind" is currently only availabe in Korea, but soon I hopt to hit USA. OSU~!!!
- Good service.
Thanks
- This thing is a WEIRD movie. It has a bunch of wrestlers for Sonny to go up against. His partner is like the king of Judo and I have to say they could have did without him. Same actors as all of the movies. But this one is just better than the last 2 in the trilogy. The final fight is freaking awesome even with that same camera man who seems to be shaking it up and down. The best of the trilogy and some how the weirdest with these wrestling death matches.
The picture quality is good btu does have horizontal lines that do distort the picture. Still pretty good picture quality though. Percectly widescreened, good sound, very good subtitles, and some really good liner notes just like the other 2 movies.
- Sonny Chiba takes on the role of Mas Oyama, one of the most famous karateka in history. His career? Dojo duels by day, moonlighting as an enforcer for the mob at night. His reputation earns him a ticket to Okinawa, where he is supposed to participate in fixed matches against American fighters. His pride and determination to prove his style cause problems when he refuses to lay down. Of course, organized criminals come to collect when their winnings begin to slip away. Matters escalate and, well, if you like Sonny Chiba, you can imagine how things go from there!
- I have to say, out of all the sonny chiba collections I have seen so far, this one is the best. This movie bascically is the last sequel to the trilogy of oyama's portrayal. Sonny chiba gives his best performance.
The movie starts off when oyama (sonny chiba)tries to prove to a secondary school that his art, which is contact karate, must be the only art that schools should be studying. Masters or sensei's already know that he is a fearless fighter. He has a rap sheet of hurting people and animals, such as bulls and bears.
He then begins to prove himself by beating the crap out one hundred students. It was funny to see the plan a way to cheat by spreading oil on the dojo floor to beat oyama, but he still overcame them. He then defeated the master and prove himself.
The story actually begins when oyama is bribed sigining a contract to fight in a wrestling match. He later finds out that the fights were fixed where he would have to loose. So he decides to quit. But comes back when he came into conflict with a sick woman that was in desperate need for medical insurance. oyama begged the contracters that they pay him in advance,so he can save the young girl. When the fight begin, the challenger tried to kill oyama. Oyama had no choice but to use karate in order to pertect himself. The contracters was angry and killed the woman that oyama was trying to save. Oyama and his judo sidekick Futysaia went on a massive rampage in a impressive climatic all out karate expo.
The movie itself is incredible. The picture quailty on this disk is great. To see a movie this old in a smooth widescreen presentation is truly remararkable.

5 comments about Kung Fu 20 Movie Pack.
- I had to edtit this because I wanted to change my review on ninja death after seeing parts 1 and 2. So here I go again, I still have not watched ALL of these, but then again, I never will watch some of them, so I will give it my my best.
Return of the Kungfu Dragon-2/5 stars at best, almost worth watching, I made it all the way through this one cause there were a lot of fights, but NOTHING sttod out to me.
Nija Empire-not going to watch this but if you are a mike egan fan, then you should certainly check this out.
NINJA DEATH 1- easily one of the most ambitious projects ever concieved by a kungfu director. The back of this box actually does a decent job of describinbg this, meaning they didn't lie and say that ti lung and david chiang. So this is easily the best of the 3- part series but you do need to get all 3. The other ones do a nice job of recapping, and if they woulod have said "Last time on Ninja Death", then that would have given a 5/5 for every movie. This movie starts out with a mullet wearing alexander lo rei who is as ripped as ever in thisd. he plays a brothel bouncer, so you get plenty of overly long funny sex scenes in this. But that is not why we are watching this. Ninja'a are coming out again and Alezander Lo Rei has to train with his master to learn a really good fighting style. I could bog you down with the story, but it's better just to try and figure it out for yourself cause it is pretty cool. So Lu Feng is the leader of the ninjas and he is trying to finish what he started like 20 years ago. And don't be fooled by this guy's 4 cent tin foil gold suit thingy because like I said, this guy is Lu Feng. And Feng's scenes are the only one they don't speed up(in part 1 at least), so maybe it is a tribute to him being the centipede. There is also this guy who wears a metal mask and is basically unstoppable. He is definitely my favorite character. Sop like I said you need to get all the parts of this, you can get the 50-pack that has all 20 of these movies and it also has parts 2 and 3. Or you can do what I did and buy the parts 2 and 3 for 99 cents off a ebay, not too bad of a buy.
Deadly Duo- bolo , chiang and ti fo not star in this and the real name is 2 GREAT CAVALIERS. It has beardy, lo lieh, angela mao, john liu, and the second appearence I have ever seen in a movie from the baddie from Jet li's last hero in china. I know what you are saying, "this has to be great", well it actually really sucks and ohter than the final fight is right on par with return of the kungfu dragon. The problem with this movie is that they don't even attempt to make the punches and kicks look like they are actually connecting. So not even worth a watch, but check it out for yourself and if you think it's good than post your opinion, I wold be glad to read it.
Ninja the protector- this movie said it had phillip ko in it in the CREDITS it said that. Mother @*$&#%^ piece of @#($, why do I keep watching these godfrey ho movies, I keep thinking that I am going to see the one good godfey ho film, but it will never happen. So this movie is a signateure splice that is better I guess than most of his ninja films.
HAnds of death-about as good as rage of the master=(wang yu"s saddest effort ever)
Weapons of death-I'm not going to watch it but if some of you're favorite kungfu stars are Eric Lee, Bob Ramos, Ralph Castellanos, then this is your bag baby!
Ninja Champion-HA ha ha ha ha ha
Four robbers- really bad chinese shoot-em-up, credits say that it has Ku Feng in it.
Shaolin Temple- sorry, no fu sheng, or maybe it does have him, but this is easily one of he worst shaolin movies ever, right up there with shaolin posse.
Image of bruce lee- Actually not that bad, I think it has Bruce Li in it. A ton of the most pointless fights ever(until the end at least). BUT THIS MOVIE HAS BOLO IN IT AND I DIDN'T SEE HIM FIGHT, SWEAR WORDS ARE RACING THROUGH MIND RIGHT NOW. I was pretty drunk when I saw this and I might have missed it, btu it would have had to be like a 30 second fight. So pai ying shows up in the final fight and it is pretty good. Easily one of the best bruce lee clone movies, a top tenner.
The snake, the tiger, the crane- I didn't see carter wong in this but it does have lo lieh as a wandering swordsman. Overall this is right along the lines of 2 great cavaliers(deadly duo) in crappiness.
Shaolin deadly kicks- I was actually expecting a lot out of this movie, maybe that's why I hated it. But if you are a dorian tan fan, you will probably like this, I just never liked that guy, he was too slow or something, I just can't put my finger on it.
Chase step by step- a real gem. I would rate this 3rd behind ninja death and shadow ninja as best movies in this "collection" and image of bruce would be a very distant 4th.
So this movie is about 2 circus kids who have to deliver gold a town who is poor and they have all sorts of troubles along the way. It has a really bad picture, but then again I have sat through and enjoyed muvh worse than this. The movie itself I would give around a 3.5/5, but still VERY good. This movie I have to say is pretty unique to what we kungfu buffs are used to, so really worth it if you can get this collection for 7.99 brand new at best buy like I did. And I would pay up to 30 dollars for this(if I already had Ninja death parts 2 and 3, which is actually pretty unlikely.
Bruce Lee:the invincible-I watched this and then image of bruce back to back. And this is the reason I got so drunk, this was so bad, I kept trying to make it better, but it only got worse the more drunk I got. So the movie stars the star of chines hercules and everyone really sucks at kung fu in this. REALLY SUCKS.
The big fight-I mix this up with hands of death, but I didn't finish either of them, because they both sucked.
The street fighter- you all know this sonny chiba movie, I don't like it, but it's watchable anf the picture is watchable too.
Death Machines- Ron Marchini, Michael Chong, Joshua Johnson, the greatest kungfu trio ever. They even rivaled the venoms back in the day. The reason Godfrey Ho is so popular. Easily one of the best movies ever. Also stars Jerry Karney, Tony "the disater" Baster. A true kung fu epic, ho's best work. 5/5 stars.
Infernal Street- only one I haven;t popped in the dvd player out of these.
Shadow Ninja-THE REASON YOU BUY COLLECTIONS LIKE THESE.
This is a true gem, I'll give you a spoiler alert right away because I tend to get carried away when I am talking about my favorite kung fu movies ever. The movie stars Roy Chiou(I think), a scrawny but tough little kid, and SHEN YI-KWAN. I know I butchered his name, but now 99.9% sure that this is the Jet Li's opponent in Tsui Hark's masterpiece, Once upon a time in china. Now if you have been looking for EYE-POPPING Martial Arts action, thenthis will definitely tickle that kungfu spot inside you that constantly needs more and more love the more and better stuff that you see.
So the story starts out with a young scrawny kid who wants to be a police officer. Now this kid has that classic peking opera style that I love and he looks absolutely FLAWLESS in his moves. So he becomes a cop and the partener of Roy Chiou(I think) and Roy doesn't like him at first, but then he gets his ass saved by him and they become good friends. Now I don't want to give away any more of this movie, except a little, but YOU NEED TO SEE THIS MOVIE, AND TO SEE THIS YOU MUST GO BY ANY MEAANS NECESSARY. There is a guy called the white killer in this movie, and I think Michael Mann stole some music from the white kilelr theme for the shootout in heat. Anyway they have this one very stylish shot where the white kilelr kills someone and laeves red blood covering the camera lense, they also do a VERY nice shot of showing an all white body get soaked in red, and a VERY VERY nice revealing scene of the white killer.
>
The final fight scene for this includes 4 people, 3 of which can fight. And when I say that they can fight, I mean they go at it HARD. These 3 can match up with ANYBODY in terms of on-screen fighting. The end battle is so spectacular that I wish that a word like breathless could describe this properly, but it doesn't. So I will just tell you that I have well over 200 kung fu movies and this rights right near the top of my all-time favorite. i literally watched this like 25 times in like 10 days.
I will never tire of this movie.
So Hell yah you should buy this collection, SHADOW NINJA IS TAKEN FROM A PRETTY GOOD PRINT, and personally , I would pay up to 20 bucks for this movie alone, even if it was a crappy print unlike the one this collection gives you. An ALL TIME CLASSIC.
And if anyone can find out the real name of this, I WILL BE VERY INTERESTED IN HEARING IT. When I looked this up on IMDB, it I clicked on the stars of it and all the same actores are in a movie called the KILLER WEARS WHITE, so if anybody has seen this sequel or prequel, PLEASE POST IT HERE AND LET ME KNOW.
- This is an excellent box gift to buy. There are so many movies to watch. You will enjoy watching them over and over again. For all of you Martial Arts fans this is one to own!!!
- well, it's the 1970s so movie technology went only so far. it's corny in a lot of ways, but some of the stories are fun. it's a kick and it's not a lot to pay considering that you get 20 movies.
- The KUNG FU 20 MOVIE PACK offers just a sampling of the hundreds of martial arts movies that have been created around the globe for the past few decades. The performers are skilled, the action intense, and the dialogue somewhat superfluous. This set offers high kicking excitement at an incredibly low price!
Users of a cinematic database graded these titles at an average (on a 1 to 10 scale) of 4.7.

1 comments about Welcome to the Grindhouse: The Bodyguard/Sister Street Fighter.
- This was the first double feature I have bought under this title and I must say it was the start of a new film viewing habit. I bought a 20 film box set labled Grindhouse as well and I couldn't even see the people in the films due to a horrible tape to dvd transfer. If you're looking for the quality to accompany the stink of such rotten awesome movie cheese then this is the Grindhouse to get with.

- Awesome!! The Executioner reminds me of The Street Fighter trilogy but not as violent but it was almost there and this film was actually made before The Street Fighter Trilogy so you can say this is like a precursor to The Street Fighter Trilogy. This Film is awesome a classic Sonny Chiba film. I especially like it when body parts pop out of people or are ripped out. WATCH IT!!

2 comments about Women Who Kick Butt 10 Movie Pack.
- When I saw this DVD boxed set, I got the sneaking suspicion that a production company was simply trying to unload some excess inventory. But I decided to get it, because I love female action heroes, and it was a pretty good deal- ten movies for under twenty bucks. Well the results, as it turned out, were somewhat uneven. There are some good ones (Sister Street Fighter in particular is loaded with great action scenes) and some that were simply awful (Street Angels had very little action and must have had a budget of about ten bucks), while others had their own merits (TNT Jackson is simply hilarious, a blaxploitation kung fu movie in which the fighters don't even come close to hitting each other!). All in all, the movies have their moments, but if you're into badass action movies with female leads, then I suggest going the Hong Kong "bullets and breasts" route, or maybe tracking down some Russ Meyer movies.
- BRENTWOOD 10 Movie Packs offer a variety of cinematic genres at bargain prices. Video transfers of their "B" movies are pretty decent, as is sound. The manufacturer's hinged boxes house DVDs adequately, but be careful the hinged sections don't pull away from the main spine! They're not that easy to reassemble.
HIGHLIGHTS of the WOMEN WHO KICK BUTT 10 Movie Pack:
The pickin's here are slim for all save fans of female martial arts films...
THE FIRING LINE-- A whiny bleach-blonde helicoptor pilot takes to the ground to fight a guerilla war in the Philippino jungles.
FLIGHT TO DANGER-- Stars its lady co-directors in a story of a martial arts team transporting a mysterious box they received in Paris that's sought by gangster types.
GET CHRISTIE LOVE!-- Blaxploitation comes to television. Example of a short-lived TV series about an African-American female undercover cop, her white dyspeptic boss and the cases she gets involved in.
SISTER STREET FIGHTER-- The best title in the set is this vintage Japanese martial arts film that teams Sonny Chiba with Etsuko Shihomi. Never mind the plot... enjoy the action!
T.N.T. JACKSON-- Scripted by longtime Roger Coman acting favorite Dick Miller (he was "The Little Shop of Horrors" customer who ate flowers), and featuring former Playboy Playmate Jeannie Bell as a karate expert who searches Hong Kong for her brother's killer.
If martial arts action is your thing, then THE TEN FACES OF SONNY CHIBA (also from BRENTWOOD) is just what you're looking for!
.
Parenthetical numbers preceding titles are 1 to 10 viewer poll ratings found at a film resource website.
