5 comments about Tattoo Connection.
  1. i remember watching this 70s jim kelly classic on saturday afternoon tv in new york when a local tv station played kung fu movies every week. ah those were the good ol' days of the late 70s/80s. THE TATTOO CONNECTION sticks out as the best of those kung fu flicks i have seen. i remember jim kelly ... as an agent named lucas sent overseas to find some diamond. i remember some goofy disco theme song titled 'diamond'. i remember a good car chase scene with kelly at some lumber or junk yard. i remember kelly making love to an asian girl while switching drinks where 1 contained a drug meant for him but the girl wound up drinking it and got high. i remember jim kelly telling his bosses that he's "the black six million dollar man". i remember in the bad dubbing 1 of the bad guys called kelly not lucas but "black man!" racist! i remember the climax on a ship and kelly kicking rear. what else? that's all i know. i am just happy that TATTOO CONNECTION will be out on dvd in april (why so many delays after original dates of feb., march 25 and now april 22?!) and i will buy it. hope it will be widescreen and remastered. i will have a good time. congrats to pathfinder video for releasing this treasure, ok 3 1/2 stars. if only they can put out other old kung fu classics like STREETS GANGS OF HONG KONG, STONER (w/ george lazenby post-007), DUEL OF THE IRON FIST. A HARD WAY TO DIE, SLAUGHTER IN SAN FRANCISCO with chuck norris, & ROOTS OF EVIL (with christian anders---who?).

it is june 9, and FINALLY, i bought THE TATTOO CONNECTION which sadly it isn't letterboxed and it is in need of windex w/ its filthy film prints. still, i had a good time. the fighting is surprising ly terrific and jim kelly is very good. to my surprise there is a lotta (A LOT! ) nudity that wasn't in the U.S. print when it first came out in theaters. there is commentary by 2 film critics who sound like a combo of beavis and butthead, dennis miller (one of 'em sounds like him) and MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000. and it is helpful and hilarious. 4 stars! if only those 2 critics can poke fun @ george lazenby's awful acting and kung-fu-ing in STONER.

  2. This film is for die hard Jim Kelly fans! "The Tattoo Connection" (TTC) is promoted as "Black Belt Jones 2" although it has no connection with the original Kelly classic. The producers of this title probably used the tie in to entice the casual fan to check this DVD out based on the popularity of "Black Belt Jones." The plot is sketchy as Kelly's secret agent character Lucas is given the assignment of retrieving a stolen diamond some where in Asia. The film never really gathers up enough steam to be considered as a top rate martial arts offering. However, TTC is at its best when Kelly is on the screen (as the star Kelly is notoriously absent during several rather long sequences) chopping up guys and laying down that ultra smooth soul brother rap. The highlight of the film occurs during the climatic fight on a ship were Kelly goes toe to toe with fellow "Enter the Dragon" alumni Bolo Yeung in a fight to the death. Kelly is fit and in fine form through out TTC. It's a shame that he wasn't given more to do in this effort it might have raised the over all quality of the film.

  3. This typical Hong Kong 1970's kung fu flick has now been re-released as BLACK BELT JONES 2, although originally released as THE TATTOO CONNECTION.Obviously the distributers have called it BBJ2 to tie in with the popularity of the original movie. This movie is no BBJ but it's quite entertaining if you are a Kelly fan.The film is let down by a scene where a rather choppy fight scene goes horribly wrong, the illusion is ruined and the fight looks fake. What's more, Jim Kelly is hardly in this movie and looks a bit of a fool surrounded by all those unknown Chinese actors.

  4. Pathfinder Pictures? Never heard of them. While I'm pleased this movie was released on DVD, I am very disappointed with the overall picture and sound quality. This is one of the worst video transfers I have ever seen and the sound is not far behind. Obviously no money went into restoring this movie for its release on DVD and that's too bad for Jim Kelly fans. Make no mistake; this movie has nothing to do with the martial art's classic Black Belt Jones. Jim Kelly had a supporting role in "Enter the Dragon" and he didn't really get a chance to show us what he could do with his ability. In "The Tattoo Connection" he is the man, but once again this movie doesn't really showcase his martial arts talent either. I struggled to give this movie a 3 star rating but hey it's Jim Kelly. This is a typical 1970's chop socky movie that could have been much better. For martial arts and Kelly fans the fight scene between Kelly and Bolo Yeung is still exciting to watch. The Tattoo Connection is still an entertaining movie, but I definitely think the price is too much considering the poor picture and sound quality from Pathfinder.

    On the DVD

    Scene access
    Filmographies

Audio commentary by cinema critics Luke Y. Thompson and Gregory Weinkauf
    Still gallery

  5. B movie at it's best but KUNG FU. Black Belt Jones is back and HE is the one that is gonna take bruce's place. He got on the train and fell off quick, but Jim Kelly had a few pretty good movies. This is definitelyone of them. Add in Lee Hoi-sang, Dorian Tan(delon tan), Bolo, Sing Chen, tony leung sei hung ( a great action director) and a couple of other stars I can't put a name to, and you have a really alomst good kung fu flick.

So some diamonds are stolen of course and Jim kelly shows up to track down the robbers. He says-"they call me the black 6 milion dollar man". AHHHHH the cheese, it is good cheese, but just liek anything, you can get too much of it. So save a litle for later if you need to, cause this is a classic and may take two sittings to get through the greatness of it. Sadly it gets REALLY borign at the midway point. So finally the ending comes around and is very unspectacular, but you do get 2 good fights, opne with jim and bolo, other with dorian tan and sing chen. All in all, worth a peek if you are a mega fan like me. And if you don't belieev me about the cheese, then here is the evry last line of the movie. "I'll see you on christmas". They may have finished this movie in 2 days time. For real.

5 comments about The Karate of Chotoku Kyan.
  1. This is Shotokan karate before it was taken to mainland Japan and changed to suit university and high school students. It is powerful, direct, includes take downs, holds, and, uniquely, a basic punch that develops significantly more power than its modern version by rotating only 90 degrees, instead of 180.
This is a very professionally produced program that is enjoyable, packed with information, and something that you will watch again and again. Shimabukuro Sensei is technically excellent, the navigational menus make it really easy to use, and the historical section alone is worth the cost of the DVD

  2. This DVD is amazing. The demonstrations of the Kata by Sensei Zenpo Shimabukuro is well worth the cost of the unit itself. His ability and strength resonate through every performance. The narrative gives insight into the life and times of the legendary Karate Master,Chotoku Kyan. I hate to nit pick for fear of being a nit wit,but there are a few things I would have liked to have seen included.First, while I understand that application(Bunkai)can vary, and is always open to interpretation.I would have liked it if some were offered.I have noticed this absent in other training modules. So you cant fault them too much.Maybe its a legal matter.I'd rather have a moving text of the systems kata, than risk the resulting lawsuit from some yahoo damaging somebody.Still,it is amazing to have this treasury of the kata of Seibukan Karate available. Second,The meaning of the names of the kata could have been included.I get a lot out the these, and while some were mentioned, others were not. When you consider that the names of these kata were changed for mostly P.C.reasons as they were absorbed by the later developing Japanese systems, you get a better sense of the history of these kata. If I may,and with the help of a couple of Karate text,(John Sells incredible;Unante and Corcoran and Farkis terrific,Martial Arts:Traditions,History,People),I would like to share these original name translations with the reader. The kata Wanshu,is the name of a Chinese Ambassador. This Kata is renamed as Empi,(Swallows wing),in most Japanese systems. The kata Ananku, refers to,light from the south or,Southern light.developed by Sensei Kyan, and Perhaps a reflection of his experiences in his travels. The kata Seisan, refers to the number,13.Sometimes thought to mean 13 techniques,or 13 steps. In systems such as Shotokan, the kata is known as Hangetsu, which means half-moon.A reference to the half-moon method of stepping between techniques. The kata Passai,is to "Penetrate a fortress" or,break a rock.Often known as Bassai-Dai in the Japanese systems, which basically means the same thing.
The meaning of the name of the kata,Wanchin, developed by Sensei Zenryo Shimabukuro, has unfortunately been lost to the sands of time. However,it is said that the katas name,is a combination of the kanji of two other kata,Wanshu and Chinto. These two kata, and the techniques involved, were favorites of Sensei Zenryo Shimabukuro.Hence an inspiration for the name. The kata,Gojushiho, translates into 54 steps.Often also known as Useishi.Accounts vary, and either trace this kata back to formal exercises practiced in Fujian,China.Or,to a Okinawan royal court ritual dance. The kata Kusanku,is a reference to a Chinese attaches name.In the Shotokan system it has been changed to Kanku Dai,which refers to Sky viewing. In other Japanese systems its known as Kosokun.
The kata Chinto,is facing or,fighting,to the East.At first thought to be the name of a Chinese seaman. The name is now believed to refer to a city in an eastern region. Its name is changed in most Japanese systems to Gankaku, which translates to Crane on a rock.
Once again, let me state that I add these as something of interest to the reader of this humble review. In no way am I attempting to take anything from Sensei Zenpos training module or the production of this unit.Nor is there any way I could hope to instruct on a level anywhere near Sensei Zenpo Shimbukuro.I just felt that perhaps this could be found as entertaining to the reader.I would also like to thank Sensei Sells for his wonderful work on the Unante, and Mr.Corcoran and Mr.Farkas for their outstanding work on Martial Arts;Traditions History People. Both of these text added considerable insight into the translation of the names of these important kata.Just in case the point of all this has been forgotten...The Karate of Chotoku Kyan is an excellent DVD.Portraying not only the importance of these kata and the history of Sensei Kyan, but also, the amazing ability of Sensei Zenpo Shimabukuro in the demonstration of these kata.If your looking for something of great significance to add to your Karate library, you wont go far wrong with The Karate of Chotoku Kyan.

  3. I had the pleasure of studying Seibukan karate from a second generation student of either Zenryo or Zenpo (the distinction was never made clear during my tenure) in the early 90's, and being the type who likes to write everything down, I was able to retain much of what I was taught including six of the kata on this tape (which I didn't write down, but learned). However, at that time none of my seniors knew Chinto or Kusanku, and I couldn't have learned it then anyway. Over the years I practiced the kata and basics of the style, considering it far superior to the numerous Japanese or Korean systems of college athletics masquerading as martial arts. I was fortunate in that my instructor, a convert from another Okinawan style, was far less autocratic than most Seibukan instructors. I was able to resume training in 2004, and was overjoyed to see this tape, which includes all the representative kata perfected by Chotoku Kyan and passed down to Zenryo Shimabukuro. The historical sections are interesting, and the kata are all presented from one direction only, once at normal speed and once in slow motion. While I remember one reviewer suggesting that it might be difficult to see certain moves because of the one angle shot, using the slow forward feature on the DVD player, you should be able to figure it out. I don't recommend learning kata off of a video by itself, but if you don't have a teacher (or don't want one, for whatever reasons), you should be able to learn something from this video. The production values are excellent, as most of Tsunami's tapes, which helps to somewhat alleviate their somewhat elitist and prejudiced focus on certain styles and instructors. I recommend this tape to anyone interested in the martial arts and Okinawan martial arts in particular.

  4. Very impressive. I've always had an interest in the kata of Kyan Sensei and this dvd demonstrates them very well. I read another review on this dvd that referred to Shimabukuro Sensei as a "force of nature". I would have to whole heartedly agree. His performance of these kata is beyond excellent. The intense power and focus of his technique is almost scary. I would highly recommend this dvd to anyone who practices any form of Shorin Ryu karate. It is very informative and very well made. I can't find a single thing wrong with this production.

  5. I thought this DVD was going to give some insight on strategy and execution for situations varied. All it turned out to be were some Kata and some history on the subject. That's good and all and don't get me wrong I'm going to keep the DVD because it is a very good depiction of all the kata I once knew but I thought it was going to be more that that. I guess I had my taste buds set on Chilly Dogs and I got a Hamburger, both are valid but I wanted Chilly Dogs. The video is grade "A" but it wasn't what I thought it was going to be from the advertisement. For those of you who need this information, the Kata on this DVD are "Passai, Chinto, Kusanku, Ananku, Wanshu, Gojushiho and Wanchin. Like I said, the quality of the video is excellent but kata are all you get.

5 comments about Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) 45 - Revolution (10th Anniverary Edition) - Revolution.
  1. This is a great night for the UFC. The 10th anniversary of the first UFC event back in 1993, where Royce Gracie stood victorious among the contestants in the tournament. Yes, back then fighters fought more than once a night...

On this occasion, the UFC honors its 10 most revered fighters in a "Viewer's Choice" segment. The top 3, not surprisingly, are Royce Gracie, Ken Shamrock and Randy Couture. You've got to love Couture. Shamrock and Gracie also become the first two fighters inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame.

The preliminary bouts are not all that memorable. Yves Edwards and Nick Agallar have a decent bout that ends unexpectedly in the 2nd round. Ricco Rodriguez takes on UFC legend Pedro Rizzo in the last fight of both of their contracts. Rodriguez is completely lackluster and fights a boring, heartless fight.

Chris Lytle then takes on rising star Robbie Lawler, who is back from a hip injury that sidelined him back in UFC 40. This is an entertaining fight. Lytle definitely has skills, but he lacked the power to trade with Lawler. They go at it hard in a few truly exciting standing exchanges.

Powerhouse Phil Baroni then matches up with Evan Tanner. Tanner moves down to middleweight for this fight. Baroni's punching power is apparent immediately, but if there is one thing that we all know about Evan Tanner, it's that his experience, composure and heart have served him well in the UFC in the past. A controversial but interesting fight, as miscommunication leads to an unfortunate early stoppage.

Cabbage faces UFC legend Tank Abbott (honored earlier that same night) in the next bout of the night. This is, as was expected, a slugfest until it is stopped due to a cut. Decent fight, but mayhem ensues in the octagon after the fight, which somewhat sullies the anniversary celebration.

Lindland and Vitale rematch. In the first fight, Lindland attempts a slam and ends up knocking himself out, as Vitale lands on his head. Lindland is able to redeem himself this time with a legitimate win, somewhat erasing the freak loss he suffered in their first meeting.

In the main event, Matt Hughes takes on highly-decorated newcomer Frank Trigg. Hughes displays his wrestling ability against Trigg, who proves to be a worthy opponent for the champion. Hughes is not known for his submissions, but he demonstrates one not previously seen in UFC competition in this fight.

A great night of fights at a great UFC event. As usual, there is plenty of entertaining behind-the-scenes bonus material to satisfy fans of the UFC. Highly recommended.

  2. Ultimate Fighting Championship is a U.S.-based mixed martial arts (MMA) organization, currently recognized as the major MMA promotion in North America.

UFC 45 - Revolution is flat out, a terrible event. The card is full of everything you don't want in a Mixed Martial Arts show. Terrible fights, brawls that look more akin to bum fight, and idiotic officating decisions. The fact that this event marked the UFC's 10th anniversary made the effort all that more pathetic. The only remotely interesting fight on paper is the heavyweight showdown between Ricco Rodriguez and Pedro Rizzo. The fight was relegated to prelim status and featured two old men circling around the octagon for 15 minutes.

UFC 45 will go down in the books as being one of the UFC's worst PPV events. Stay away from this one at all costs.

  3. UFC 45 is a remarkably bad event. The only decent fight on the card is one that holds no bearing on nternational rankings and is between two guys who have never amounted to anything and never will(Lytle and Lawler) OTher than that the rest of the show is terrible. I mean sure, if you enjoy watching two overweight fat slobs throw punches at each other for a round than you might enjoy it, but if you are a true fan of MMA than this show is the pits. You can tell that all these guys have very little skill compared to the guys in Pride and sometimes are akin to fat barroom brawlers.

Pride FC is the top organization in the world. Sadly, the UFC is far behind.

  4. Just terrible and not worth the money. The fights are horrible and the fighters have very little skill. Puchase PRIDE instead where the best fighters in the WORLD come to fight.

  5. Now while I am not a WWF fan in any way, I did love the stupid stuff that happened in this event. In one fight when the match gets called early (or so the fighter thinks so), he punches the ref! There is also a brawl which was fun. Then there is a weird moment where Tank Abbot tries to take the microphone from Bruce Buffer. With all that said, the fights are the reason to get UFC 45. AWESOME FIGHTS!!!

YVES EDWARDS vs. NICK AGALLAR-Edwards is one of my personal favorites and he picks apart Agallar pretty easily.

CHRIS LIGUORI vs. KEITH ROCKEL-good, quick grappling match.

RICCO RODRIGUEZ vs. PEDRO RIZZO-man, this is not the Ricco Rodriguez I remember. Rizzo just continues not to capitalize and I just don't understand how he doesn't finish this fight off.

CHRIS LYTLE vs. ROBBIE LAWLOR-you see these 2 names and you immediately say that this is going to be a great toe to toe fight. It starts off on the ground but they do make it to their feet. When they do get up they just go at it. A spectacular fight. I always get tired of Lawlor's antics in the ring but it was actually a great moment when Lytle gets into it also and screams out from pure adrenaline.

EVAN TANNER vs. PHIL BARONI-maybe the best fight on the card. The positive and negative traits are on full display for both in this classic battle but then it ends in controversy. I will let you be the judge of that though because I did not come to a conclusion myself. I didn't see what the ref did but he was the one that was there. Too tough to decide and it would have helped to have full sound to find out.

CABBAGE vs. TANK ABBOT-this is the match I was the most excited for but I guess that I just can't get over the fact that Tank isn't near what he used to be. The fight went the way I thought, I was hoping for way too much.

FALANIKO VITALE vs. MATT LINDLAND-this is a rematch and the first fight was promising until Lindland tried to take Vitale down only to land badly on his head and knock himself out. Vitale proves to be a tough opponent again in this match of wrestling vs. jujitsu though it gets a bit boring(for me).

FRANK TRIGG vs. MATT HUGHES(part 1)-not a very good match up, well it seemed like it had a chance but it was nice to see Trigg get messed up after talking all that BS.

5 comments about Billy Blanks' Tae Bo: 30 Power Rounds, One-Minute Workouts.
  1. I regularly do Tae Bo as a way to cross-train. When I saw this DVD, I was excited thinking it would be a fast-paced 30 minute work out. Wrong. Billy seems very disorganized as though he hadn't choreographed the work out ahead of time. With so many other quality Tae Bo workouts out there, I wouldn't suggest wasting your money (or time) on this one.

  2. I, like the other reviewers, was also very disappointed in this workout. I didn't feel like I had worked out at all, and don't ever recall breaking a sweat or really breathing heavily. I did it once and put it in my charity bag.

  3. I really like most of Billy Blanks work outs but this one was dreadful. I used it once and will never use it again. I wont even resell it as that would be horrible to do to someone else.

  4. I love the power round DVD's. I realize a lot of people don't. They dont' get good reviews. but let me tell you my experience with these tapes. I lost 30 lbs during the first part of the year doing the "12 power rounds" before work in the mornings and eating right.

It took me two months to work up to the 20 power rounds and now I have finally gotten strong enough to do the 30 and it is just right for a 50 yr old overweight woman... It leaves me breathless and feeling like I have really accomplished something. I sweat. I absolutely love them. I have tons of Billy tapes/DVD's but this set is just right for my fitness level and it works for me. I wouldn't trade my power rounds for anything.

It is all a matter of perspective....and for me, these power round are just right!

I recently ordered the amped kit but have not received it yet. The reason I ordered it is because it is based on cardio bursts just like the power rounds. I am looking forward to trying it as well..

The reason a lot of women give up on taebo is because the tapes are long and hard and they can't do them. Especially if they are older and overweight like me. I say start with the power rounds. You will be able to do them and you will feel like you have worked out.

But get the set. The 12, the 20 and the 30. Work you way up and then try something else. That's what I did. I can now do 30 minute bootcamp 1 and 20 mintues of celebrity fit cardio. But I couldn't start out with that. At first, the 12 power rounds was very difficult. .... I love taebo and the power rounds are my favorite tapes so far.

And no matter what anyone says, if you do the 12, 20 or 30 power rounds with exaggerated moves, you have really worked out.. You just choose the one that you can do depending on your fitness level. They changed my life. I will never look at exercise the same. Billy Blanks rocks!

    Cheers,
    Jennifer

  5. I'm kind of surprised at how many people disliked this dvd...and how much they disliked it. I have the boot camp dvds and this one and I like them all. They each have their flaws but for the most part they deliver good solid workouts. For someone to say they didn't even break a sweat while doing this workout...I kinda think they're exaggerating.

For someone who's at an advanced level this may not be the dvd for them...but if you're a beginner or even somewhere in the middle (like me), this is a good cardio workout. I have 2 left feet so I find some of the kicking steps a bit awkward...but that's just the spaz in me.

the only thing I don't like about this dvd is that the sound isn't really synced with the picture but it's not that big a deal.

5 comments about Deadful Melody.
  1. but a little weak on plot and realism of fight scenes. I liked it and put it just a little below Dragon's Inn but certainly way better than most Kung Fu DVDs (for example all 15 or so Wu Tang Clan Kung Fu DVDs I have seen to date). You get what you pay for, and the relatively high price for this DVD is worth it, in this viewers opinion.

  2. This movie talks about Brigitte Lin's parents are killed when the bad guys try to snatched their "Deadful Melody" skill. Brigitte Lin survived and vowed to take revenge using "Deadful Melody" skill. Overall, the fighting scenes are nice and Brigitte Lin gave a good performance. Not a bad pop corn movie.

  3. I have seen a lot of Chinese flicks and I can tell you that this a very good film. I have seen and own storm riders (wasn't impressed, but a good film), the duel, Dragon Inn, Magnificent Butcher, Wing chun, a man called hero, and 5 deadly venoms or return of 5DV, and this belongs in same class. The action was not hard to follow. I knew who was getting decapitated, or dismembered. Anyone tells you that the action is weak, is also referring to before mentioned films also. Bridget lin is so beautiful, WOW!

  4. I loved this as a classic kung-fu revenge click. Brigitte Lin is as beautiful as ever even when throwing her icy stare of death. She is a tremendous actress. I've never known many actresses that can act without speaking as Brigitte can with her facial expressions. Yuen Biao gives a strong performance.
The fight scenes are pretty good. When will they ever get the title right - it's "Deadly Melody."

  5. And I am serious man. I don't want to give anything away, but this thing is insane. We don't get to see all the beautiful movements people are doing like bride with whit hair, but we get an extremely weird action movie that has people dying like by the tens. There is a part where I am prett sure the exploding heart thing from kill bil comes in to play. If someone knows where tarantino could have gotten this, tell me cause this is from like 93 and is the first reference I have seen of it. And it is WAY cooler than what happen in kill billy. So overall b lin is just too beautiful not too watch her and yuen biou gets to show off some of his acrobatics and gives a mre than solid acting performance. And the music is REALLY good. They don't play it enough but it is REALLY freaking awesome. When brigitte fights the special effects are really weak but the bodies being blown up are super cool. So don't expect fist of legend here type of action, but a lot more akin to butterfly sword, it;s just brigitte wasn't in that and with EVERYBODY underused, I would say this movie is far superior.

The dvd I got IS NOT a special edition, so maybe when you buy them from the new used section you just don't get what the picture is but that's fine but this movie is worth it. It has BOOMING 5.1 sound. It has a pretty good picture, not perfectly widescreened but good enough. The picture quality is well above average and that is a good thing sice it has IMBEDDED FREAKING SUBTITLES. Luckily, there is seriously only like 1-2 lines I couldn't read. So unlike a movie that I bought form rarescope awhile ago, the imbedded subs on this are very good. I would compare the imb subs to magic crane if you have seen that. No special features but seeing the beauty of b lin and having to turn my speakers way down not to blow them, that was sweet.

3 comments about The Karate of Choki Motobu.
  1. This is without doubt one of the very best programs dealing with genuinely traditional karate that has ever been made. The production quality is very high, the locations beautiful, the soundtrack superbly edited, and the navigational menus a delight to use. More importantly, the material is genuine, and presented by the son of karate's most colorful and many say, the toughest of karate founding fathers.
Here are the kata and fighting techniques of Choki Motobu, the instructor who so strongly influenced his students, Yasuhiro Konishi, Shoshin Nagamine, Hironori Otsuka that his methods can still be seen in the styles they founded. For the first time on camera Chosei Motobu shows his father's Naihanchi kata and the 12 application exercises that are the heart of this style's legendary combat effectiveness. For maximum clarity they are shown full speed and in slow motion from different angles.
The Motobu's family support of this project is obvious from the large amount of previously unseen photos and documents it includes, making the historical section alone is worth the price of the DVD.
Only Tsunami is able to produce martial arts instructional programs of this quality. Without doubt they set the standard for the industry.

  2. Being a practitioner of Isshinryu, one of the martial styles strongly influenced by Master Choki Motobu's karate, my interest in this video at least in part, was to see what principles Master Shimabuku picked up from this karate legend.
The history, if strongly biased, is interesting, and the Naihanchi kata shown are well explained. By far though, the best part of this DVD is the Kumite. Here demonstrated, are superb examples of how, in addition to kata, karate has been practiced and handed-down from generation to generation.

  3. This is an excellent buy. It is very well made. The historical info and old photographs are a must see for any history buff. Chosei Motobu does an excellent job presenting the material and it is amazing to see a man of his age still spry enough demonstrate kata and 12 different kumite sequences, and explain them all. If you study Naihanchi kata, you have to have this dvd. It's required material. Buy it now.

  1. An awesome place to start! This DVD is a good workout on its own, and also a great introduction to the Turbo Jam series. The instructor keeps you motivated WITHOUT being obnoxiously perky, and the moves are shown from several different angles so you can understand what you're supposed to be doing.

Be sure you try this one BEFORE you try any other Turbo Jam DVD -- this is the one where they teach you the basic moves that are used in the other ones, so it will make the others much less confusing. And learning the moves with the proper form (as explained on this DVD) is important -- if you're not doing the correct tuck for the ab ones, you're not getting the full workout.

Don't assume that because it's the introduction it will be any less of a workout -- I considered myself to be in fairly good shape (not fat, walk several miles a day) and this still had me worn out at the end -- muscles I didn't even know I had were sore!
