5 comments about Simplified Tai chi Chuan with Applications (YMAA).
  1. As I was taking a Tai Chi class, I used this video to practice at home. It followed the instructors style and was easy to use and follow.

  2. I recently received this DVD (Simplified Tai Chi Chuan) and absolutely think it's great! There is SO much information and it's all categorized to make it even easier to decied where you want to start viewing. Each and every posture is broken down and explained as the instructor goes through the moves. So if you feel the need to practice one of the postures more than another, all you have to do is pick it on the menu. No need to go searching for the moves. You also get to see the moves from several angles. Yes, there are moments when you may get a little confused about which leg or arm that they want you to move, but you ARE attempting to learn a martial art from a DVD so.... I recommend this DVD even for beginners, (which is what I am, by the way). I also have the book (Tai Chi Chuan 24 &48 postures with martial applicaitaons) and it is VERY helpful. It covers the history of tai chi, breathing exercises, helpful diagrams, and photos of all the 48 postures. The DVD and book compliment each other. Thanks.

  3. This Tai Chi dvd is very helpful. As a person who has attended a 6 week class in tai chi, it was very easy to follow and told me everything I need to continue in this martial art. You can either do the routine following the master, or have him show you exactly how the various postures should look, going slowly over them. Each section of the dvd is seperate and easy to find. You can delve as deeply or shallowly as desired into tai chi.

  4. an easy video to follow for a beginner. The instructions are audible and the movements are easy to follow.

  5. It is very hard for me to relax and tai chi helps me keep my mind clear of other things because i am concentrating on the movements. I would recommend this dvd for anyone who wants to learn tai chi. I have had many begining tai chi videos but this one takes the cake!

5 comments about Kentucky Fried Movie.
  1. Every trend has to start somewhere and the idea of stringing together bits of satire based on current events and movies obviously lends itself to Kentucky Fried Movie.

  2. I picked this up in a bargain bin recently and just had to see it. I remembered the film trailer as a teen and thought it would be funnier. This isn't the first film of this kind and certainly not the best. It's a hodge podge of good and bad skits ranging from pretty funny to total bomb! It's interesting for notalgia but, it's not all that good. I would check it out on cable or buy it for no more than a couple of bucks! The DVD transfer is good, but the original source material is not great to begin with.

  3. Is this a GREAT movie? Um , Citizen Kane it is NOT. Is the humor PC? Ah, no... Well then, is it a funny movie anyway? Well, frankly...that depends on when you were born and where you were when it came out. Much like The Groove Tube, this takes a jab at several topics "of it's day." If you happened to be around in 1970's USA, then you either saw this movie at the theater or wished you had... (And 1970's USA cannot be stressed enough!)

Like TGT, some of the jokes have lost their edge... Not because they're not funny, but because they are time/era specific. If you remember the TV and movies of the early to mid 70's it's a funny movie. If you have no experience with those...well, it may well prove a little flat. Hmmm, perhaps a lot flat. Yeah, it's dated in many parts but then maybe that's a product of overzealous PC run rampent as much as it is somewhat dated sophomoric humor...

Bottom (snicker) line: If you were at least 11-12 (minimum) when it came out (and had cool parents!) then go ahead and buy it...along with The Groove Tube, invite a bunch of your "old" friends over and have a blast. OTOH, if the 70's happened WAAAAY before your time...find somebody "older" that owns it AND can explain some of the jokes. ;-) (That goes for both this and TGT.)

All in all it's a funny movie that doesn't pretend to be anything more than a bunch of stupid skits. If you can live with that...and it's somewhat dated humor, then go for it.

FWIW, I happen to think this is a bit better than The Groove Tube but they're still both worth owning...if you were there.

  4. I laughed so hard in this movie, and I don't recognize any of the actors. Where did all these people go? Someone recently recommended this too me, and it's just the stupid type of humor I love. Right up there with Borat and 40-year old virgin in terms of laughs.

  5. The style of this movie makes the intro seem somewhat disjointed. I found the move entertaining and amusing. My brother praised it to the skies. Fans of John Waters will find this movie somewhat tame, but in a similar vein.

  1. very funny martial arts movie. Funny in the sarcastic sense. good to watch to lighten your day.

  2. I can't remember the last time I laughed this hard. It was funny the second time too. And the third, fourth, fifth .... Then I had to force myself to stop rewatching the Taiji Sticky Buns scene (number 4 in scene selection). Try watching this movie after Red Trousers and you'll appreciate it even more. Oh, and watch the American release first -- comedy doesn't work with subtitles alone.

  3. This is a hilarious and heart-warming tale of a group of downtrodden kung fu brothers who find new life in the world of football (soccer). It features the dynamic and hugely entertaining Stephen Chow, a man who makes his comrades in Western success Jackie Chan and Jet Li pale in comparison. Where Li is wooden and dull and Chan tries far too hard, Chow has an indifference that is refreshing. In some ways similar to his later offering, "Kung Fu (Hustle)," although less dark and violent, this movie is suitable for the whole family, particularly when you factor in the poignant lesson of avoiding prejudice.
The action is over-the-top CGI magic and makes for many of the belly laughs, but the romantic subplot between Chow's dreamer and the ugly duckling bun maker is a sweet and unique concept. The mere fact that Chow creates a character that sees beauty beneath the scarred exterior of the skilled yet self-doubting street vendor is a testament to all that Hollywood fails to understand about their audience.
I could watch this movie over and over and always get a laugh, get a warm feeling in my heart, and get a thrill out of the effortless kung fu magic of the extraordinarily gifted Stephen Chow.

  4. Even though this movie reminds me a little of the old Sunday afternoon "Kung Fu Theater" B movies, the antics are histerical, and the special effects are really good. The movie even has a pretty good plot and message about overcoming obstacles and striving to rise above one's circumstances. I happen to be a soccer fan, and rented it on a whim knowing it was a comedy. Once I had watched it, I knew that I had to own it. My kids and I watch it three or four times a year.

  5. I was living in China when this hit the theatres, and wow was it popular. Now I know why. We start with some absurd Chinese slapstick and move into an excellent shows of special effects, stunts, and martial artistry. This is fun, thrilling, funny, crazy as all get-out, and just damn good. I'll be watching it again.

5 comments about House of Flying Daggers.
  1. As others have warned, Sony seriously botched the job on this film's transfer to Blu-ray... so bad that it seems irresponsible to be selling this far inferior product when compared to the regular DVD. Until Sony reissues a remastered version, don't waste your money!

  2. I like this movie a lot, so I thought why not getting it in the highest video format presently available (I already have one in DVD format). I am greatly disappointed. I do not know how Sony can produce such junk for the format they brag so much about the picture quality.

Don't bother with this version on the movie!

  3. Government Solider Jin was sent to find, and capture, the head of the Flying Daggers; a rebel group bent on destroying the Government. Jin found the daughter of the head the Flying Daggers, a beautiful young blind girl named Mei. She's the key to finding where the rebel group is based. But Jin, quite the Casanova, never though he's actually fall in love with her....

So begins The House of Flying Daggers, a beautiful movie that'll sweep you up in the first beginning moments, and leave you in tears in the final minutes. With a beautiful Score, breathtaking theme song sung by Opera star Kathleen Battle, superb Cast, and stunning visuals, this movie will sweep you off your feet.

Takashi Kaneshiro plays Jin, a head Soldier in the Government sent to find, as I said above, the head of a rebel group. Takashi is Asia's Johnny Depp; he has the looks, and talent to prove it. His acting as the Casanova Jin will have you laughing in the beginning, and swooning in the middle as he falls for the person he's been sent to capture.

Ziyi Zhang (Memoirs of a Geisha, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) plays Mei, a blind young woman who is the daughter of the leader of the Flying Daggers. Ziyi will captivate you as soon as she steps on the screen. She draws and sucks you in, as if she very well casts a spell on you. Her acting, like her beauty, is flawless.

And don't forget top notch actor, Andy Lau who plays Takashi's head superior. I don't won't to spoil to much, but there are secrets and twists surrounding this character that'll leave you shocked and breathless.

Shigeru Umebayashi has made a beautiful soundtrack indeed, which will have you closing your eyes and listening, believing you're in China yourself. Without a doubt you'll want to go out and buy the soundtrack for yourself, and listen to the breathtaking sounds. Kathleen Battle, world renowned Opera singer, lends her voice to a beautiful heart wrenching ending song. While I'm not a big Opera fan, this song is so full of sadness and emotion, it'll leave you with a sob ready to escape your throat.

The visuals are stunning, the costumes gorgeous and mind blowing. Action scenes are wonderfully choreographed, and sweeping camera angles are gorgeous.

As for questionable material (for you parents) there is no foul language, the action scenes are done tastefully without gore. There are a few sensual scenes, but nothing is really shown.

Before I finish this review, I must warn against one thing. The plot twists are so mind blowing, so shocking, this movie will leave you with your mouth hanging open. The Ending sequence will leave you in tears, so be forewarned....

  4. I can't decide which I like better, the story or the beautiful costuming, settings, music, etc. And then there's the exquisite dancing and breathtaking action, precisely and interestingly choreographed. The story is about a woman, on an extremely important mission, who falls in love with the enemy. However, she was already bound to another man. Enter the classic love triangle but this is so beautifully told, it is nothing like a soap opera plot. The ending is both sad and happy, which I also love in movies. I give this five stars and highly recommend it.

  5. This movie is must have for anyone who enjoys great storyline and magnificent special effects and gorgeous background sceneries. IMO, this movie is up to par with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero!

This is must have for Kung Fu movie fanatics like me!

  1. I bought this for the kids (ages 3,5,7&9)to have an alternative way to get moving in the winter months. They really enjoy the kicking and punching exercises.

As a former exercise instructor myself, I would say that it isn't the best run exercise session. He is not consistent in utilizing both sides and our heart rates were not in our target range.

So I have mixed feelings...I will continue to use it because it is fun and isn't unsafe, but I don't think I'd recommend it.

  2. THIS WORKOUT DVD WAS JUST WHAT ME AND MY DAUGHTER NEEDED.IT WILL KEEP YOU GOING FOR HOURS

  3. I teach physical education at a local elementary school and have used it this year for rainy days. It has been a big hit!!! Would definitely recommend it!

  4. I recently adopted this DVD into our daily routine. My children are hooked. It is a great product to also use for postpartum mothers to get them back into the groove of exercising (use caution if a C-section was performed with the floor routine). Also, two of my family members were 8 and 9. Both children were 60 pounds overweight. The fact that the DVD features an overweight child helped them with their confidence. If she can I do, so can I, they said. After 3 months, they have lost 20 pounds each.

  5. I teach 3rd grade in Florida where we are supposed to fit in 30 minutes of sustained physical activity daily. The kids really get in to this DVD! Its fun, and Billy Blanks makes it easy for the kids. I don't think they realize they are working out!

5 comments about The Crow (Miramax/Dimension Collector's Series).
  1. It was easy to locate what I wanted and it was delivered rather quickly. It was brand new and works great.

  2. Brandon Lee was a shas]dow of his father, Bruce Lees, amazing legacy of giving 100% in all that he said and did. To him, there was no small part, only small actors and he proved it in being the absolute BEST in every part he ever played. The Crow was, and always will be, his masterpiece both in life and in death. As a fan, my fiance and I have gone to puut flowers at his grave several times. Last time we went we were sitting, on the bench between he and his fathers grave, talking about the movie and how erie it was when the crow came and sat on his charecters grave to call him back to life to settle accounts. When we had gotten back in the car I turned to say goodbye and bless them both where ever they may both be, and right in front of both our eyes as well as his sisters, a crow floated down with the ease of an angel and came to rest on Brandons grave. While he and his sister were franticly looking for a camera, the crow turned and I swear it looked directly at me, stared eye to eye with me. I have yet to feel such a peace of well being in a grave yard again. Then the bird cawed and with a lift of wings disappeared into the trees.
    PERFECTION OF THE SOUL!

  3. I love this movie and this edition with all of the extras did not disappoint. Great interviews and behind-the-scenes stuff perfectly complement a fantastic movie. I'd recommend this in a heartbeat.

  4. R.I.P. Brandon.
I loved this movie when it came out. I think I saw it five (not kidding) times at the theater.
Heartbreaking watching this now, especially the scene where everything slows down when the trick or treaters are running by and Brandon's laughing.
What a horrid tragic ending to a career that was just starting to take off.
A great movie and everyone owes it to themselves to at least rent this movie.
Not a good movie for kids, but if you don't know who Brandon Lee was, this is a great place to see him shine.

  5. There was the Crow comic book, and there is this movie.
the orignal comic and this movie are by far the best versions of The Crow.

after this movie were several movie and comic sequils, a tv series that remade the story, and a comic series that did the same thing.

NONE of these were in any way interesting.

this IS the BEST version of the Crow. just as the orignal comic is the best of the comics.
    the rest is garbage.

there have been other actors cast in the roll and one even playing the same charture of Eric Draven.

frankly I think that is a diservice to the memory of Brandon Lee
to recast his role and have someone else do it.

lee is the ONLY actor who does it well.

and it is not only lee who plays his part so well.
    there is
    Michael Wincott
who is excelent as the villen, Top Doller, he steals all his sceans.

the fact is becaus of lee's tragic death, on the set of this very movie, some sceans were shot with a stunt double.
and yet Lee is still very much a large part in the movie with several sceans.

this movie is about the dead coming back to life.
and that is very much punchuated by having Lee brought back to life in this movie.

so this movie is the only one that is need for a collention.

the rest are not worth the price of admission.

the story is of Eric Draven who is killed along with his girl friend. some time later Draven is back to take revenge against the muggers who killed him. he faces Top Doller in a final battle and gains peace in the end.

this movie is about reserection, revenge, atonment, and redemption.

again with the movie having lee it is the theme of the dead returning.

one of my favorite sceans is when one of the muggers is about to hurt Draven's girl friend and he quotes from some book about the Devil fearing good, and the mugger only mocks that. he mocks the power of good. but then Draven straps him to his own car with a bomb. and the mugger then sees the 'awful power' of goodness. I rather like that.

this is one of the best movies ever made.
    defitly a great 'superhero' movie.

    and again.
the best version of the Crow story Ive ever seen.

5 comments about Walt Disney Baby Einstein 25 Dvd Collection Set.
  1. I am so glad that I purchased this set. My baby has been watching them since she was 2 months old and absolutely LOVES them!!! They are definitely kind of weird to the parent's eye, but to the baby's eye it must be amazing. I wish I had these DVDs before she was 2 months. They are LIFE-SAVERS!!! Thank you Baby Einstein!!

  2. Baby Einstein is great... but this product is NOT. Baby Einstein Company does not even produce a 25-disc DVD set. All copies of this product are pirated.

If you're still tempted to buy this pirated DVD set, I recommend buying Moises Naim's book "Illicit" instead.

  3. These movies are great and all come in one case. I have no idea and make no representations as to wether or not they are pirated, I hope they are not, there was nothing to indicate that when I purchased them. What I can tell you is they came all in one box that appeared to be produced by Baby Einstein in shrink wrap, including all the trademark information. So far all of our DVD's play, even on our oldest machine. We had a couple hand-me-down Baby Einstein DVD's and the content is the same and the two DVD's appear almost identical.

However, there are no jacket sleeves, printed materials or other information provided with the DVD's. This is most problematic with the Language Nursery DVD which ordinarily comes with a printed Parent Guide, none here. Relatedly, there is nothing to indicate what age each DVD is for. Use the website or the other Reviewer's post here to get the age recommendations for each DVD. We just wrote on each DVD with a Sharpie what the age recommendation was for quick identification. Also, I think this product may have been shipped from overseas.

  4. I do not believe this DVD set is pirated. The box Has all the correct trademarks on the back, and a UPC code.

I recieved this Collection recently and have had no problems so far with the discs, they all seem to be working fine. It includes:

    1. Baby Einstein - Baby Monet - Discovering the Seasons - 3m+
    2. Baby Einstein - Baby Mozart - Music Festival - 3m+
    3. Baby Einstein - Baby Bach - Musical Adventure - 3m+

5 comments about The 36th Chamber of Shaolin.
  1. Another must have for the Kung Fu movie collector. I recently decided to start my own collection and this was another one of my first choices. The story is great and the moves incredible. I enjoyed the training parts Gordon Liu had to go thru in the Shaolin Temple. Gordon Liu plays one determined character seeking revenge on the Manchu invaders who take over and kill defenseless villagers. You don't want to pass this up, add it to your library if you don't already have it.

  2. When I was a Kung Fu student...Ok...a *practicing* Kung Fu student, my teacher would occasionally show us some videos. Not for their entertainment value, but to illustrate certain points. We'd see the protagonist execute some fantastic move, then we'd move outside to replicate it. More often that not, we'd fail. But that was the point...He needed to impress upon us the fact that most movie martial arts were bogus. He didn't want us to end up in a real life situation and try to "Chuck Norris" somebody and get ourselves hurt.

In the case of this video, he wanted to show us what real life training and practice could do, but with a "Aren't you glad you don't have to train like *that*?" attitude.

This remains my favorite Kung Fu movie of all time. If you're a martial artist or just a martial arts fan, this title needs to be in your library.

  3. This is one of the best Martial arts movies ever to come from the Shaw Brothers. Its storyline and dialogue are creative and highly enteraining. The quality of the DVD is tops - with the choces of watching in English, or Cantonese or Mandarian with or without subtitles - so I can get the best of the actor's performance.

  4. A classic, no doubt. I get the whole Shoalin proving ground stuff but I could have used more fight sequences. Three sectional staff scene is unbelievable though. Digital transfer is excellent!

  5. Anyone that is a fan of martial arts needs to see this film! The film is put together very nicely, and the picture looks great. The story is very good. A students seeks vengeance on the government that killed his friends and family, and seeks out the Shaolin temple. A place where monks only get the opportunity to learn kung fu, they reject him at first but eventually accept him. The intense training of the 35 chambers is shown greatly is one of the best parts of the movie. After his training is complete, he gets the choice of being overseer of one of the 35 chambers but chooses to create his own, the 36th chamber where he wants have the ability to give any man the chance to learn kung fu whether they are a monk or not. See the film to see if he completes this timeless story! Time to go get the other Shaw Brothers films!

5 comments about Blade (New Line Platinum Series).
  1. "I give her 50/50 do you remember Mr Crispy at the hospital" great halloween movie.

  2. This first installment is the best of the trilogy. Blade is the series that inspired many other 'dark-vampire' type movies that would follow for many years later but nothing tops the original bad-to-the-bone vampire killer Blade. A modern day super hero at its finest.

  3. Blade is an excellent niche in the market of Vampire tellings and tales. Wesley Snipes plays the part of a Daywalker, a vampire that has a genetic altering which allows him to withstand sunlight and the other various nuisances that the Vamps of the night have to deal with.

Blade is heavy on imagery and action, with a cast that is also great! Kris Kristofferson and Stephen Dorff are seen early and often and their characters bring a lot of strength to an otherwise simple storyline. Snipes as a vampire hunter is superb, and his character has a nice no-nonsense approach at taking on the vamps, which are seeing a rise in power and a change in the ranks take place that could mean the end of all mankind.

The storyline that follows Dorff's character trying to decipher an ancient vampire code was well done, and added to the supporting structure that the vampires needed in order to make them feel like something more than just "humans with fangs" who suck blood. Dark and Gothic with a sense of balance in the fact that everything within the plot seems to work very well, there are no loose ends, no sub plots that go nowhere and not a single character shown that doesn't have an impact in the impending outcome of the story. Battle scenes are early and often, with a wide variety of hardware and weaponry showcased by Blade (Snipes) and the few who stand behind him and his stand against ultimate domination by the Vampires. Blade is different, and does its best to stay away from common clichés considering how often stories regarding vampires are portrayed, therefore making it somewhat unique and having rewatchable value.

  4. Even though this is a bloodbath, it is sleek and stylish, and the good storyline makes this a great modern vampire movie. The superhero aspect of this is part of what makes it so good. I didn't particularly like the sequels to this, but my husband and I both loved this movie. We had to wait to watch it until the kids were in bed, since this is way too grown up for them. But we loved it, and were never really drawn to vampire movies before. This DVD is great and has something like an alternate ending, the La Magra sequence, but it actually comes a little before the true "end" of the movie. The actual end of the movie is the same as the theatrical release, which is the one I remember seeing on TV too. Even though I never really liked vampire movies, this story is so good that it makes me want to hunt down some of the comic books.

  5. I've been doing my own reading and retrospective on vampires over the last couple of weeks after seeing "I am Legend" with Will Smith. So I decided to go back to the iconic source. Having not read Dracula in years, I decided to read it again and began by comparing it to the contemporary (1992) movie version...Coppola's "Bram Stoker's Dracula" starring Gary Oldman. When I initially read the story as a child, I focused more on my stereotyped "Dracula as performed by Bella Lugosi" and not Stoker's original version. Reading Stoker in the original again I was charmed by the writing style and mores of the times. It holds up well. I then watched Coppola's movie which was tarted up and sexualized for today's audience. While Oldman's over the top performance is great fun to watch, the book is so much better. And if I were Stoker, I would be turning in my grave since the movie version barely follows the book and yet is "Bram Stoker's Dracula".

I then dragged Blade out of my movie collection. It is great campy fun. The first club scene is absolutely classic and really sets the mood for the rest of the movie. This is my favorite Wesley Snipes movie and he really delivers. And I love Kris Kristofferson's dissipated, whiskey voiced as Blade's compadre. The action drags a little bit in the middle, but the end is satisfying, and the bad guy really radiates "evil bad". So you are cheering Blade to the end. Yes, I know this is a B movie, and it has nothing to do with the iconic original dracula. But if you love vampire movies, I recommend this highly. It holds up well even though it it a decade old.

3 comments about Pride 33: Second Coming.
  1. What can I say. Being in the 3rd row was insane. This show has it all---knock outs, subs, and one decision by Trigg. Sokoudjou turned heads. Gomi vs Diaz was the fight of 2007 according to many. Shogun, Hellboy. Mac Danzig vs Sakurai---WOw. Henso vs Wand---yikes. The PPV showed the complete show from beginning to end.
This is an event that marked the end of Pride in the USA, and in general, as 34 was nowhere near the level of this event.

A must buy for any MMA fan.

  2. Antonio "Rodrigo" Nogueira is one of the top HWs in MMA (most rank him at No. 2 behind Fedor, who's in danger of losing his position at the top of the food chain after more than two years without facing a quality HW opponent). His brother, Antonio "Rogerio" Nogueira, is the LHW who was shockingly KO'd by Sokodju at Pride 33. Just to clear that up.

Finally, the later Pride events are making it to DVD. The Silva-Henderson fight alone is worth the price. All of you new MMA and UFC fans, check out the Pride events. You won't be disappointed.

  3. The Diaz/Gomi match, despite the post fight controversy, ranks as the most dramatic MMA match that I have ever seen. Throw in the Henderson/Silva match and this ranks as one of the best shows by any organization ever. Not impressed by Nick Diaz? You will be after seeing his heart against Gomi.
