- Dear Gary Daniels, please never stop making movies! The wolrd would no doubt be a sader place without your epic films.
So, Capitol Punishment, never mind the cover this isn't "Gary goes to prison" I'm pretty sure the graphics guys didn't watch the movie and just assumed because the film was called "Capitol Punishment" it was a prison flick, well, it isn't. What it is almost defys explanation, Gary is some sort of fighter, ok. Gary gets taken in by DEA agents to do a mission, ok. Gary fights some guy who he's supposed to "kill" so this guy can get into witness protection with no qwestions asked....ummm...ok. After that Gary gets chased and double and then triple crossed by DEA guys, assulted by drug dealers, rouge cops, bikers, people hanging out in amusement parks, bums, and whatever extras the producers manged to give 10 bucks to to have Gary beat them into pulps. And in the end he has to face his former master turned drug lord as well as David Carradine as ...some guy with a phone. I think that was the story anyway, I would have given it just 2 stars but there are some pretty cool deaths that made me "ohh" and "ahh" Other then that if it raining out, and hailing and your xbox breaks, and all your books burn, and your phone is unhooked and you just need something to do, you might pop this baby in and try to uncover the mysteries of the universe as Gary beats down thug number 59.
- I picked up this DVD because, every now and then, I enjoy watching the bad martial arts movies that came out of the 1980s and 1990s. This is definitely one of those, with a typical story line, bad cinematography, and the expected over acting.
The one thing that I was surprised about is that a very young, very hot Scott Shaw appears in this film as the bad guy cohort of David Carradine. At least for me, that made this movie worth the watch.

- I bought the set specifically for Kung Fu Zombie, and unfortunately the print is unwatchable. Taken from what looks to be about a third-generation VHS copy, the colors bleed horribly, the blacks are distinctly blue, and the subtitles, oh my! They're unreadable, having been printed on the negative as so many unreadable subtitles are, but also the edges are cut off, letting you in on only about 33% of what's said. On top of that they're pretty sparse, too! Line after line of dialogue will be spoken with not a single translation. I stopped watching after about ten minutes.
Contrarily, Fistful of Talons was a pleasant surprise. The plot's nothing impressive, with post-revolution Manchu rebels trying to re-instate the emperor (but wasn't the last imperial ruler an empRESS?). But the combat's surprisingly fluid and modern, and it makes use of a couple of better-than-average set pieces. It's filmed pretty well, with a couple of moments where I noticed some relatively sophisticated blocking and camera work. The picture's not bad, and the dub's average. Unfortunately the pan & scan crop is lamentable, with one scene in particular of some apparently intricate hand-fu being left off screen; we only see the dude's elbow!
Also toward the negative end, there are only a couple of unintentionally comedic moments, and any fun had with those is almost immediately snuffed by some outrageous and graphic animal cruelty. SPOILER?
--(A live eagle used as a cudgel and then torn in half)--
Besides that unfortunate aspect and star Billy Chong's lack of charisma (I think he was aping Jackie Chan, and failing), Fistful of Talons is relatively worthwhile. It's got a couple of neat, weird weapons, and the mandatory "super-abrupt ending" (though this one's much more abrupt than most). If, however, you're still interested in Kung Fu Zombie, I understand the Black Belt Theater disc has a pretty good picture.
- Kungfu zombie- I was able to read the subtitles for about 50% overall of this movie. I swear that is in this movie too. Unfortunately, the picture quality is poor, but still VERY watchable, but even if it was better quality, this movie would still recieive a 4/5. That being said, this movie is a unique find, and well worth watching for fu fans. THE ENDING IS INSANE, not up there with return of master killer final scene, but INSANE. Very cool movie.
Fistful of Talons-I have too agree with the other reviewer on this one exactly, but i do have to say that BILLY CHONG IS FREAKING AWESOME, he is right up there with alexander lo rei for me, but not in the class of Phillip Ko, Chen Shan, or Hwang Jang Lee. Everthing else I would agree with the past reviewer on this one.

5 comments about Ultimate Fighting Championship 5.
- This UFC ranks somewhere near the bottom on my list. UFC VI champ Oleg Taktarov makes a decent debut, but the rest of the tournament's fighters will only impress the eyes of those with little appreciation for technique & a lust for blood. Also features the first Superfight in UFC history which should go down in the books as the second (to Shamrock vs. Severn 2) most boring so far.
- After 4 consecutive UFC tournament appearances, Royce Gracie gets a Superfight against Ken Shamrock. Royce is psyched because of the one fight, and is at least on camera, very confident. The result: was a very long/technical fight. These types of fights are not the most exciting to the untrained eye, but should be respected. As far as the tournament; a bigger, and a little smarter fighter class. Dan Severn returns, while others like Sambo champion Oleg Taktarov fall short due to bloody circumstances. All in all, a good tournament, but the last we see of Royce Gracie. Even with the new rules(Time -Limit), the 100% Jiu-jitsu style became too "one-dimensional". But those who practice it will tell you, 'BJJ isn't one dimensional', and I certainly agree. The birth of cross-training sort of began in this tournamant.
- Dan Severn is a freakin' madman in this tournament. His fight with Taktarov alone makes it worth buying. Plus It's the end of Royce Gracie's reign as champion. The shamrock-gracie fight is long and frustrating to watch, but it's still the old, harsh UFC fighting.
- UFC 5 saw the return of Dan "The Beast" Severn and honestly, a more focused and better rounded Severn because this time around he picked up some strikes and some finishing holds. After his disappointing defeat in UFC 4 to Royce Gracie, you could tell that Severn was not only here to win it all, he was here to bust some heads.
The main draw was O.k. The 1st quarter match was between Andy Anderson (Tae Kwon Do) and Jon Hess (SAFTA) and I have to admit, this was one of the dirtiest fights in the UFC. There were a lot of rules infringements in this match by Hess like scratching at the eyes, fish hooking the nose and the mouth. I will admit that this was a TRUE FIGHT but at the same time, it was very dirty. 2nd fight, Todd Medina (Jeet Kune Do) vs Larry Cureton (Kickboxing). This match was a little disappointing as well because this was a match between 2 strikers and immediately it went to the ground. Match 3 was very impressive from a grappler's point of view. Oleg Taktarov made his debut here against Ernie Verdicia (Karate) and Taktarov showed the same calm and comfort level on the ground as Royce Gracie does. And the final quarter match was between Severn and Joe Charles (Judo). Severn made his presence felt by bringing out the big guns in this one and he showed off some new things that he learned. The Super Fight was a return match from UFC I between Royce Gracie and Ken Shamrock. This match is really long and a bit on the boring side, even for a scientific grappling match. At first there are shades of a few strikes but for the most part this is a match dedicated to "the guard". Another small highlight was from Canadian wrestler Dave Beneteau who also made his debut here as well. All in all, UFC 5 was O.k. I wouldn't call this one of the better ones but if you're a big fan of Severn's, this was for you because this UFC is all about Severn. Oleg Taktarov also had a great showing but other than that, this one is for the grapplers. For all of you striker fans, check out UFC 2 and UFC 6. There is a lot of striking in those 2 and for you grapplers, check out the ULTIMATE ULTIMATE and UFC 4.
- This was an amazing tournament and was the first time Americans and Mixed Martial Arts fans were able to see SAFTA and how dangerous of a style it can be. MMA'ers, watch out for Jon Hess!!!
