  1. I picked this up in a bargain bin recently and just had to see it. I remembered the film trailer as a teen and thought it would be funnier. This isn't the first film of this kind and certainly not the best. It's a hodge podge of good and bad skits ranging from pretty funny to total bomb! It's interesting for notalgia but, it's not all that good. I would check it out on cable or buy it for no more than a couple of bucks! The DVD transfer is good, but the original source material is not great to begin with.

  2. Is this a GREAT movie? Um , Citizen Kane it is NOT. Is the humor PC? Ah, no... Well then, is it a funny movie anyway? Well, frankly...that depends on when you were born and where you were when it came out. Much like The Groove Tube, this takes a jab at several topics "of it's day." If you happened to be around in 1970's USA, then you either saw this movie at the theater or wished you had... (And 1970's USA cannot be stressed enough!)

Like TGT, some of the jokes have lost their edge... Not because they're not funny, but because they are time/era specific. If you remember the TV and movies of the early to mid 70's it's a funny movie. If you have no experience with those...well, it may well prove a little flat. Hmmm, perhaps a lot flat. Yeah, it's dated in many parts but then maybe that's a product of overzealous PC run rampent as much as it is somewhat dated sophomoric humor...

Bottom (snicker) line: If you were at least 11-12 (minimum) when it came out (and had cool parents!) then go ahead and buy it...along with The Groove Tube, invite a bunch of your "old" friends over and have a blast. OTOH, if the 70's happened WAAAAY before your time...find somebody "older" that owns it AND can explain some of the jokes. ;-) (That goes for both this and TGT.)

All in all it's a funny movie that doesn't pretend to be anything more than a bunch of stupid skits. If you can live with that...and it's somewhat dated humor, then go for it.

FWIW, I happen to think this is a bit better than The Groove Tube but they're still both worth owning...if you were there.

  3. I laughed so hard in this movie, and I don't recognize any of the actors. Where did all these people go? Someone recently recommended this too me, and it's just the stupid type of humor I love. Right up there with Borat and 40-year old virgin in terms of laughs.

  4. The style of this movie makes the intro seem somewhat disjointed. I found the move entertaining and amusing. My brother praised it to the skies. Fans of John Waters will find this movie somewhat tame, but in a similar vein.

  5. Playing a number of obscure online games and belonging to a number of absurdist forums, I've been bombarded with references to Kentucky Fried Movie. I finally decided to buy it to see what the fuss was about, and was not severely disappointed. Many of the jokes fall just short of being funny, but are close enough for an effort grade. The bits that did get a laugh from me were so great as to nearly carry the four star rating on their own. Close to the middle, a parody of pornography turns into pornography, so this movie really isn't appropriate for younger viewers.

It has its dull moments, but I would definitely recommend this film to any absurdist, comedy fan, or budding classic movie collector.

  1. I bought this for the kids (ages 3,5,7&9)to have an alternative way to get moving in the winter months. They really enjoy the kicking and punching exercises.

As a former exercise instructor myself, I would say that it isn't the best run exercise session. He is not consistent in utilizing both sides and our heart rates were not in our target range.

So I have mixed feelings...I will continue to use it because it is fun and isn't unsafe, but I don't think I'd recommend it.

  2. THIS WORKOUT DVD WAS JUST WHAT ME AND MY DAUGHTER NEEDED.IT WILL KEEP YOU GOING FOR HOURS

  3. I teach physical education at a local elementary school and have used it this year for rainy days. It has been a big hit!!! Would definitely recommend it!

  4. I recently adopted this DVD into our daily routine. My children are hooked. It is a great product to also use for postpartum mothers to get them back into the groove of exercising (use caution if a C-section was performed with the floor routine). Also, two of my family members were 8 and 9. Both children were 60 pounds overweight. The fact that the DVD features an overweight child helped them with their confidence. If she can I do, so can I, they said. After 3 months, they have lost 20 pounds each.

  5. I teach 3rd grade in Florida where we are supposed to fit in 30 minutes of sustained physical activity daily. The kids really get in to this DVD! Its fun, and Billy Blanks makes it easy for the kids. I don't think they realize they are working out!

  1. What can I say. Being in the 3rd row was insane. This show has it all---knock outs, subs, and one decision by Trigg. Sokoudjou turned heads. Gomi vs Diaz was the fight of 2007 according to many. Shogun, Hellboy. Mac Danzig vs Sakurai---WOw. Henso vs Wand---yikes. The PPV showed the complete show from beginning to end.
This is an event that marked the end of Pride in the USA, and in general, as 34 was nowhere near the level of this event.

A must buy for any MMA fan.

  2. Antonio "Rodrigo" Nogueira is one of the top HWs in MMA (most rank him at No. 2 behind Fedor, who's in danger of losing his position at the top of the food chain after more than two years without facing a quality HW opponent). His brother, Antonio "Rogerio" Nogueira, is the LHW who was shockingly KO'd by Sokodju at Pride 33. Just to clear that up.

Finally, the later Pride events are making it to DVD. The Silva-Henderson fight alone is worth the price. All of you new MMA and UFC fans, check out the Pride events. You won't be disappointed.

  3. The Diaz/Gomi match, despite the post fight controversy, ranks as the most dramatic MMA match that I have ever seen. Throw in the Henderson/Silva match and this ranks as one of the best shows by any organization ever. Not impressed by Nick Diaz? You will be after seeing his heart against Gomi.

5 comments about House of Flying Daggers.

  1. Government Solider Jin was sent to find, and capture, the head of the Flying Daggers; a rebel group bent on destroying the Government. Jin found the daughter of the head the Flying Daggers, a beautiful young blind girl named Mei. She's the key to finding where the rebel group is based. But Jin, quite the Casanova, never though he's actually fall in love with her....

So begins The House of Flying Daggers, a beautiful movie that'll sweep you up in the first beginning moments, and leave you in tears in the final minutes. With a beautiful Score, breathtaking theme song sung by Opera star Kathleen Battle, superb Cast, and stunning visuals, this movie will sweep you off your feet.

Takashi Kaneshiro plays Jin, a head Soldier in the Government sent to find, as I said above, the head of a rebel group. Takashi is Asia's Johnny Depp; he has the looks, and talent to prove it. His acting as the Casanova Jin will have you laughing in the beginning, and swooning in the middle as he falls for the person he's been sent to capture.

Ziyi Zhang (Memoirs of a Geisha, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) plays Mei, a blind young woman who is the daughter of the leader of the Flying Daggers. Ziyi will captivate you as soon as she steps on the screen. She draws and sucks you in, as if she very well casts a spell on you. Her acting, like her beauty, is flawless.

And don't forget top notch actor, Andy Lau who plays Takashi's head superior. I don't won't to spoil to much, but there are secrets and twists surrounding this character that'll leave you shocked and breathless.

Shigeru Umebayashi has made a beautiful soundtrack indeed, which will have you closing your eyes and listening, believing you're in China yourself. Without a doubt you'll want to go out and buy the soundtrack for yourself, and listen to the breathtaking sounds. Kathleen Battle, world renowned Opera singer, lends her voice to a beautiful heart wrenching ending song. While I'm not a big Opera fan, this song is so full of sadness and emotion, it'll leave you with a sob ready to escape your throat.

The visuals are stunning, the costumes gorgeous and mind blowing. Action scenes are wonderfully choreographed, and sweeping camera angles are gorgeous.

As for questionable material (for you parents) there is no foul language, the action scenes are done tastefully without gore. There are a few sensual scenes, but nothing is really shown.

Before I finish this review, I must warn against one thing. The plot twists are so mind blowing, so shocking, this movie will leave you with your mouth hanging open. The Ending sequence will leave you in tears, so be forewarned....

  2. I can't decide which I like better, the story or the beautiful costuming, settings, music, etc. And then there's the exquisite dancing and breathtaking action, precisely and interestingly choreographed. The story is about a woman, on an extremely important mission, who falls in love with the enemy. However, she was already bound to another man. Enter the classic love triangle but this is so beautifully told, it is nothing like a soap opera plot. The ending is both sad and happy, which I also love in movies. I give this five stars and highly recommend it.

  3. This movie is must have for anyone who enjoys great storyline and magnificent special effects and gorgeous background sceneries. IMO, this movie is up to par with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero!

This is must have for Kung Fu movie fanatics like me!

  4. Um........BORING!!!
I loved Crouching Tiger, and I loved Hero even more.
I was expecting a brilliant picture like the other two I mentioned but...........BORING!!!
I think I fell asleep twice during the movie. I forced myself to watch it again.
I didn't fall asleep the second time, but I still found the story to be boring, unmemorable and criminally uninteresting.
Thank the gods Curse of the Golden Flower came out, that movie totally smokes this one.
Granted, it may not have as much of the high wire acrobatics of Flying Daggers but the story is so much better than this um......romance.
So what's good about House of Flying Daggers?
It's pretty to look at, and has some great high wire martial effects.
But if you've seen Crouching, or Hero, you've seen it done better with much better stories.
I can't recommend this one except for die hard swords and romance fans.
    Not recommended.

  5. This movie makes the matrix look like a chick flick. The effects and use of bold colors in this film are amazing. Once you get past having to read subtitles, the movie is pure excitement and magic.

5 comments about Curse of the Golden Flower.
  1. The year is 928 and the evil Tang emperor is slowly but inexorably poisoning his beautiful, unfaithful wife, after learning that she has been having an affair with her stepson, his eldest son. He can't kill her outright, because bringing her adultery into the open would discredit both himself and his son, so he takes an insidious revenge. He's added a new ingredient to her daily potion, a black fungus from Persia that, taken in small doses over a few months, will turn her into a cretin. But the empress isn't about to go down without a fight; she's onto his schemes and has hatched a scheme of her own: on the night of the Chrysanthemum Festival, when all Chinese celebrate the unity of the family, she'll raise a palace rebellion, force the emperor to abdicate and make her own blood son, Prince Jai, the emperor in his place.

So begins "Curse of the Golden Flower" a Chinese morality story directed by Zhang Yimou, and it's a visual knockout: our eyes are almost assaulted by the lush interiors and the exterior action scenes. The emperor's palace looks like an explosion in a Day-Glo factory; a non-stop riot of color everywhere you look. The imperial family is covered in so much gold from nose to toes that you wonder how they can stand up straight, let alone move about. Everything about the palace is regimented down to the last detail and we understand it's all to underline the power of the emperor. When he sneezes, the earth shakes.

The actors put in creditable performances. Chow Yun Fat (I wish Amazon would respect the Chinese rule of putting the surname first and stop calling him Yun Fat Chow) gives a chilling portrayal of the emperor, venal and evil, cruel and insensitive; watching him calmly chowing down at the Chrysanthemum Festival after his world has fallen down around his ears is mind-blowing. The beautiful Gong Li wins our sympathy as the empress, determined to go out with a bang rather than a whimper, even if it means taking everyone else down with her. Of the three sons, Liu Ye gives the most impressive performance as the weak Crown Prince Wan, seduced by his stepmother, unable to extricate himself from her machinations, and terrified of his sire; he arouses in us a mixture of pity and contempt. Qin Junjie is somewhat perplexing as the third son, Yu, who turns out to have had his own agenda all along and totally upsets the apple cart. The minor characters are interesting and well played, notably Li Man as the imperial doctor's daughter Chan, exquisitely beautiful with a face like a cameo. But the most intriguing character in this film is the emperor's cast-off first wife, the crown prince's birth mother, who reappears in the lives of the imperial family in a singularly incovenient fashion; Chen Jin's performance in this difficult role is excellent.

What keeps "Curse of the Golden Flower" from being a great movie, as opposed to a merely good movie, is there's so much of everything, it's all so overblown, that it's more melodrama than true drama. We watch it, we're blown away by it, but we don't really feel it. One gets the sense that Zhang Yimou was piling special effect on special effect and the result is a kind of sensory overload. We're watching an opulent movie and the effects are so over the top that they almost overwhelm the story.

"Curse of the Golden Flower" is meant to be a morality play, but it seems that the person most in need of enlightenment, the emperor himself, has learned exactly nothing. He knows only one way to be emperor, and he's succeeded both because of his cruelty and in spite of it. After all the blood is shed, the bodies are carted off, the blood is washed away, new carpets and chrysanthemums laid down, and everything will continue as usual. It's as if everything that went before was an inconvenient glitch in the proceedings, and it leaves us feeling curiously empty after the final credits.

(And to the producers: next time you film a historical movie, check your history book first. Although this movie is set in 928 and the emperor is identified as the "Tang emperor", the Tang dynasty actually ended in 907.)

    Judy Lind

  2. Many have commented on the epic scale of this production. Some claim it is the most expensive movie ever made in China and that the set was the largest ever constructed for a movie there. Whatever the claims, the visuals in this movie are amazing. Frankly, I have never seen colors and opulence depicted in such luxurious tones before. The word dazzling seems somewhat understated.

I don't know classical Chinese history or mythology, but this is supposedly based on a historical tale from about a thousand years ago. Emperor Ping was a mere soldier who used a marriage to a royal daughter to claim his throne. He is ruthless beyond measure in keeping it. His wife, Empress Phoenix feels she is being poisoned by the medicine he forces her to take each day. The Emperor's sons all struggle for position and there are secrets galore that contribute to their antagonism and ferocity. The children are used and manipulated as needed by each parent. I will let you work out the details as you watch the movie.

Is the acting great? Well, the story doesn't demand terrible complexity in the characters. Also, remember that Western style emoting may not be what the Chinese acting ethos is all about. For me, the acting was sufficient. It was clear to me what was happening and the emotions rang true. The combat sequences are quite spectacular. Ninjas are all over the place doing all kinds of strange and almost magical things for the Emperor with a lot of it going on in the air (with ropes). The various ground armies are also amazing in scope.

So, is this a great movie? No. Is it worth seeing? Yes. Is it a classic? I doubt it, but you will sure remember the brilliance of the colors and the army sequences.

  3. Cavil about historical accuracy, over-the-top bodice-infatuated costuming, this that and a thousand other things - this is just flat out one helluva movie! Without question the most visually ecstatic film since Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring.. Curse of the Golden Flower is more intoxicating than the empress' hourly medicine! What an actor Li Gong is, and gorgeous to look at. Yun Fat Chow is the first eminence of the whole piece, as he is in virtually every film he makes. I submit that in the end it isnt the camera's magnificence that triumphs, but a story of human destiny told with blood-burning intimacy. Far from being a "martial arts" film as it's often said, Curse of the Golden Flower flies from the curse of formula, bemoaning it in almost every scene, with exceeding interior beauty. It's a spiritual film perhaps BECAUSE of its operatic heart, who knows? The scenes are bewitching, riveting; the force of the actors' embodiments lifts the piece to wild heights, which is to say, toward the actual. From beginning to end, Li Gong carries the complete story in her face. Every minor part - the court doctor, his daughter - is spun with consummate finesse. Another treasure is this film's uncommonly beautiful score, subtly integrated as another and equal dimension of character. One of the finest movie scores in years. It's just one helluva movie! If we want 'historical' China and look for it everywhere, entertainment will rarely hand us the pivotal tool to crack the nut. But to congregate the shamelessly intense ethos of China, the koan, if you will, of China, and hand it jewel-like to us, is indeed what film can do, what it can be. In forms visible and invisible, Curse of the Golden Flower dreams and matches, near perfectly, far as I can tell, the spiritual truth of human experience. Watch it and live!

  4. I found this movie to be one of the most visually stunning epics I have ever seen. The meticulous research that went into creating a lavish set and historically accurate costuming down to the last bead and stitch, including the multiple layers of dress, most of which is never even seen on camera, but authentically recreated to give the actors a true sense of the burden (both literally and figuratively) of the opulence of the Tang Dynasty. The veneer of utter decadence and affluence allowed the absolute ruler to maintain the appearance for the masses that the royal families were to be worshiped as living gods - a belief that some Asian cultures continue to this day.

This movie effectively demonstrates that this facade veiled the fact that absolute power disintegrates rulers from within, resulting in malignance, inner corrosion and depravity.

There are endless plot twists as the members of the royal family clandestinely maneuver and conspire against one another, each one shifting loyalties in desperate attempts to protect their own fluctuating sense of honor and motivation in an attempted coup against the Emperor, with the added onus of having deeper hidden agendas that do not emerge until the climax of the film.

The antagonist is the only true survivor of the coup, having the greater tactical prowess than all the other players, but eventually having to suffer the painful losses and consequences, culminating in the destruction of his royal lineage.

The retention of absolute power at any price is what drives the film. Yes, bad guys DO win in the end sometimes, just as in life, but at what cost? Clearly the victor has won the battle, but has actually lost the war.

I believe that the only error in the reporting of this movie is that it is labeled as action/adventure, when in truth it should have been listed as a period drama.

I have read several very poor reviews on this site, stating that the movie was over-long, plotless and shallow, with no redeeming qualities. Almost all stated that they were disappointed at the lack of real action; the reviewers were expecting to see a "martial arts" action film, naturally became detractors because they were apparently just watching their clocks until the "cool Asian action" began, unable to simply watch the movie and allow the beautiful nuance and subtlety to flow over them in the historically accurate representation of the era that was designed to show how difficult survival was in the 10th century, a misogynistic period of absolute loyalty and obedience to the crown.

Since it is as much a period drama as "Anna and the King," I find it sad that it was promoted as action/adventure rather than a foreign-language drama. It would have undoubtedly altered the expectations of the viewers, allowing the movie to be better appreciated as a subtle commentary on absolute power, warning away the viewers who were looking for Jet Li or Jackie Chan Asian fight movies.

To quote another reviewer who seems to share my opinion:
"There is no doubt that this detractory perspective is derived from overly-saturated people of western education, without any consideration of eastern understanding and that the history originates from an ancient tradition from which European literature itself was derived."

  5. We loved to watch the cinamatography was amazing, one of the best I have seen in some time, worth watching, just a bit soap opera-ish. I love Asian artistic movies and this is a touch more dramatic. A bit bloody, but over fun to watch.

  1. Jason Statham is the modern day action hero. Watching films like Crank and Transporter brings you back to the good old days when you had a bunch of big budget action films every year by Stallone, Arnold, Seagal, Jean Claude and a host of pretenders. This film however is not very good. The action is hot and heavy throughout, and if you like high body counts, you might find some enjoyment. The story is not that great, the acting is bad(which is surprising since Li is good and Statham is decent enough. The gun play aspect of the movie is good, but the martial arts scenes are really very poor. Again it is surprising since Jet is such a great film martial artists. What sealed the deal is the really terrible ending. This is a rental at best for action junkies.

  2. The only reason I got this movie is beacuase of the star power, Jet Li and Jason Statham in the same movie, fighting against each other, In greatly choreagraphed fight scenes and gun fights.
This Blu-ray includes a lot of extrass infact too many, not saying the movie doesnt deserve the extras im just saying nobody is actually going to watch all the extras/commentaries.

If you like action movies and/or jason statham and jet libuy this movie if not give it a rent.

  3. I strongly agree with the majority of reviewers here that this movie cant satisfy most of the target audience who expect violent confrontations between Li and Statham. However, as a fan of Li, I like the movie much for its extremely stylish depiction of Li as the very intelligent and nearly invincible assasin who knows strategy. I like the plot, too, but I wont ruin your interest by disclosing it. Despite the not so promising ratings here, I suggest you to rent it for a good entertainment after dinner. The rental and your valuable time will be well paid back.

  4. gave it to my inlaw,he liked it way better, of course i dont like Jason the bold guy. he stinks

  5. Caveat #1: I love action films. Caveat #2: This is not a martial arts film.

Which is fine with me--I love action films, regardless of what kind of action it is. Well, some action films. This is one.

After an assassin named Rogue killed his partner and his partner's wife and child, finding Rogue is federal agent John Crawford's (Jason Statham) raison d'etre.

Meanwhile, Rogue's (Jet Li) purpose is a little less straightforward. Presumably working for the Triad, it becomes clear that he's manipulating the Triad into an all-out war with the Yakuza.

So basically, it's tailor-made for me: lots of action, a intriguing mystery (why is Rogue causing a war?), some nice eye-candy (Jason Statham), and a couple of really good twists.

5 comments about Kiss of the Dragon [Blu-ray].
  1. After seeying the for me quite dissapointing "Romeo Must Die", I saw this film: Kiss of the Dragon. This film I found way better than "Romeo must Die" and it was very entertaining. It is a very serious and dark film with an energetic Li who shows what he's got!

The story follows a Chinese Agent (Jet Li) who is sent to Paris, France to help the local cops there with an ivestigation. When on the mission he finds out that he is in a web of traitors who will try to kill him at any costs. Now, with the prove of a crime on a cassettetape, he has to run for his life!

Kiss of the Draghon features 5 energetic and well choreographed action sequences that gets the adrenaline pumping. Li is absolutely fantastic and kicks and punches his way through the movie with great speed. There is one scene where Li has to fight with about 25 men, which is a may it be short but spectacular scene to see. Next to being good in the fighting, he also succeeds in giving his caracther some dramatic depth. He acts good and gives a satisfying performance.
Bridget Fonda stars next to Li as the hooker with the golden heart. She acts good as well. She manages to stay on her feet and knows how to play the dramatic scenes well.
As the bad guy there is Tchéky Karyo, who plays his character with such evil and anger that you just can't wait till Li gets the chance to kick his butt good!

So overall, Kiss of the Dragon is a good film with good acting performances and great action. Action fans will not be dissapointed and Jet Li fans will love this film. So, an absolute must for Jet Li fans and a good film to see for action fans.

  2. This is has to be one of the worst movies I have ever seen . It ranks up there with Godzilla 2000 ...

  3. The crew that has something to do with Luc Besson seem to rotate jobs as films are made. From Besson there comes a line-up of action films created by Cory Yuen, Louis Leterrier, Pierre Morel, and more, all taking turns at direction, cinematography, or choreography.

These movies have always been fun and easy to watch, with charming moments of clever action and a smart twist on the normal plate. "The Transporter," "Unleashed," "District B13," "Wasabi," the upcoming "War," and, of course, "Kiss of the Dragon" are among this collection.

I give my review of "Kiss of the Dragon" by pointing to the contributions of Cory Yuen, the director and fight choreographer, and actors Jet Li, who co-wrote, and Cyril Raffaelli.

Of the actors, this latter one is the silent blonde martial artist Jet Li fights in the climax of the film. Though examples of him are not prolific, he is swift become my favorite martial artist of the day, due partially to his enthusiasm for le parkour.

"Kiss of the Dragon" features very fine action from Jet Li at the hands of Cory Yuen, highlighted with Jet Li's defeat of a room full of karate students, a brutal fight in a noodel shop with a much larger gentleman, and the seminal moment, the fight against Cyril Raffaelli. The acrobatics and speed on display in especially this final conflict are a pleasure to watch.

Of course, it is the action which shines, more than making up for decent connections. One staple of the films produced by this crew is an unusually intelligent script or, instead of plot, a unique and refreshing take on the action scenes themselves. The action was great, but the plot seemed to rely too heavily on crutch of the female protagonist's status as a prostitute. Dealing with her destructive personal life in a serious way was an admirable attempt for an action film, but not enough to justify calling the script intelligent, making this an anomaly among the collection of films I've mentioned.

It's a fun movie, especially in a nostalgic way- it's one of the earliest movies put out by this group of filmmakers, and for an early attempt it does well for itself. They've certainly polished themselves up with time, sort of leaving "Kiss of the Dragon" behind. But it's still fun to watch, and fun to see the early stages of some of my favorite industry names.

  4. The moive itself is your standard low-budget, over the top action film. It has the usual plot and the usual action. I am not here to talk about the film, but the BD quality.

The BD quality is very good and pristine - for a single layer BD with DTS-HD MA! I see the specs on Amazon do not mention that! DTS-HD Master Audio is THE reason to get this disc! It is also the reason the price is so high.

The film is not bad, but if you were looking for a true martial arts film or a believable action film, this is not it. Jet Li had great promise, but most of his movies do not compare to his scenes in Lethal Weapon 4. It is something to watch, but not something to keep.

  5. This movie makes me want to kill myself.

    F*** Bridget Fonda. Shes terrible.

  1. This movie has action, comedy, romance, suspence all rolled into one.Kurt Russell is a great actor and he plays his part excellent to a tee.

  2. I'm a Kurt Russell Fan. I had never seen this movie and recently checked it out and its beyond Horrible. The comedy does not exist.(I cant remember one funny part) The acting besides Russell is bad, and even he didnt seem to fit well in the role. The plot is stupid and beyond farfetched. I have a pretty wild imagination but from start to finish my only thoughts on this movie were PLEASE HURRY UP AND END.

Will never watch again. THIS MOVIE SUCKS

  3. Big Trouble in Little China fits the definition of a cult film. Not popular on its initial release - being blocked by other summer films of 1986 such as ALIENS - it has since developed a following which it most certainly deserves. John Carpenter purposely made this a B-movie and I commend him for that, because it certainly is a blast and the chemistry between characters with Kurt Russell at the center is mostly entertaining.

The plot revolves around an ancient feud between two separate Chinese groups that has come all the way from its homeland to San Francisco which witless, wisecracking trucker Jack Burton (the always amusing Kurt Russell) suddenly finds himself right in the middle of. With his friend Wang Chi - a skilled Chinese martial artist who owns a restraint in Little China - he is pulled into a fight between good and evil and to save his truck! An ancient sorcerer - Lo Pan - needs to marry a girl with green eyes and then sacrifice her to lift a curse and retain his young form, or else be a frail old man for centuries to come; only being able to take his true form for brief periods of time. When Wang Chi's fiancée is abducted by Lo Pan's Three Storms - warriors possessing the powers of a storm - it is up to Jack and Wang to save her and end the centuries old conflict.

As I previously mentioned this film was intentionally made a B-movie and the cast obviously had a lot of fun making it, with lots of tongue in cheek dialogue and intentional mistakes. It all adds to the campy fun that is Big Trouble in little China Town. The best part about it comes from the chemistry between Jack Burton and Wang Chi. You'd think Russell's character would be on top of things being the muscled American toting the gun, but Chi is the real hero with all his martial arts and fighting skills, but Burton never seems to get that constantly puffing his chest believing he is in fact the hero and Chi is the sidekick. This is the main humor that comes from this film, and I found that aspect incredibly creative considering it was a very unique idea that many people didn't get at the time but I believe the idea has begun to catch on and people can now appreciate that humor aspect of Big Trouble in Little China.

The film is great entertainment and will have you smiling at its foolishness throughout and it comes highly recommended by me if you're someone who can just sit back and enjoy this masterpiece in camp. It can be found in five dollar bargain bins across the United States so just pick it up if you get the chance. Get the popcorn out, turn off the lights and enjoy.

  4. Fortunately I have managed to miss this film over the last 22 years. I'm saying that because I suspect if I had seen it when it first came out I wouldn't have appreciated it. Now though, following Kill Bill and many other martial arts epics this is a refreshing change from the usual Hollywood stodge.

Kurt Russell is superb as Jack, a wise-cracking truck driver who accidently stumbles upon an extremly unlikely plot revolving around two girls with green eyes and an ancient magician who is seeking to gain ultimate power by marrying one or both of the girls. As intimated above the magician, who is called Lo Pan, has a vague similarity to Mei Pei in Kill Bill. Kim Cattrall is one of the two leading actresses, who is now of course much more famous for 'Sex and the City'.

This is all done with tongue firmly in cheek. Most of the time Kurt Russell uses a John Wayne voice which is completely inappropriate, but somehow its perfect for this film. Frequently the film is very funny and Russell's character is in general the butt of most of the jokes. The special effects are beginning to look dated now, but given that this film was probably made on a relatively low budget they actually stand up remarkably well.

This is a throughly entertaining film.

  5. A faint, pleasant echo from an era when we had less to worry about. Yes, it's a silly movie with a fluffy, 'bouncy' little plot (and sub-plot), but it's fun to watch Kim Cattrall and Kurt Russell perform when they were both *so* much younger... James Hong is excellent... His villain provides "a whole lot more" than just 'timelessness' and 'inscrutability' on tap. Nice relaxing fun.

  1. It was easy to locate what I wanted and it was delivered rather quickly. It was brand new and works great.

  2. Brandon Lee was a shas]dow of his father, Bruce Lees, amazing legacy of giving 100% in all that he said and did. To him, there was no small part, only small actors and he proved it in being the absolute BEST in every part he ever played. The Crow was, and always will be, his masterpiece both in life and in death. As a fan, my fiance and I have gone to puut flowers at his grave several times. Last time we went we were sitting, on the bench between he and his fathers grave, talking about the movie and how erie it was when the crow came and sat on his charecters grave to call him back to life to settle accounts. When we had gotten back in the car I turned to say goodbye and bless them both where ever they may both be, and right in front of both our eyes as well as his sisters, a crow floated down with the ease of an angel and came to rest on Brandons grave. While he and his sister were franticly looking for a camera, the crow turned and I swear it looked directly at me, stared eye to eye with me. I have yet to feel such a peace of well being in a grave yard again. Then the bird cawed and with a lift of wings disappeared into the trees.
    PERFECTION OF THE SOUL!

  3. I love this movie and this edition with all of the extras did not disappoint. Great interviews and behind-the-scenes stuff perfectly complement a fantastic movie. I'd recommend this in a heartbeat.

  4. R.I.P. Brandon.
I loved this movie when it came out. I think I saw it five (not kidding) times at the theater.
Heartbreaking watching this now, especially the scene where everything slows down when the trick or treaters are running by and Brandon's laughing.
What a horrid tragic ending to a career that was just starting to take off.
A great movie and everyone owes it to themselves to at least rent this movie.
Not a good movie for kids, but if you don't know who Brandon Lee was, this is a great place to see him shine.

  5. There was the Crow comic book, and there is this movie.
the orignal comic and this movie are by far the best versions of The Crow.

after this movie were several movie and comic sequils, a tv series that remade the story, and a comic series that did the same thing.

NONE of these were in any way interesting.

this IS the BEST version of the Crow. just as the orignal comic is the best of the comics.
    the rest is garbage.

there have been other actors cast in the roll and one even playing the same charture of Eric Draven.

frankly I think that is a diservice to the memory of Brandon Lee
to recast his role and have someone else do it.

lee is the ONLY actor who does it well.

and it is not only lee who plays his part so well.
    there is
    Michael Wincott
who is excelent as the villen, Top Doller, he steals all his sceans.

the fact is becaus of lee's tragic death, on the set of this very movie, some sceans were shot with a stunt double.
and yet Lee is still very much a large part in the movie with several sceans.

this movie is about the dead coming back to life.
and that is very much punchuated by having Lee brought back to life in this movie.

so this movie is the only one that is need for a collention.

the rest are not worth the price of admission.

the story is of Eric Draven who is killed along with his girl friend. some time later Draven is back to take revenge against the muggers who killed him. he faces Top Doller in a final battle and gains peace in the end.

this movie is about reserection, revenge, atonment, and redemption.

again with the movie having lee it is the theme of the dead returning.

one of my favorite sceans is when one of the muggers is about to hurt Draven's girl friend and he quotes from some book about the Devil fearing good, and the mugger only mocks that. he mocks the power of good. but then Draven straps him to his own car with a bomb. and the mugger then sees the 'awful power' of goodness. I rather like that.

this is one of the best movies ever made.
    defitly a great 'superhero' movie.

    and again.
the best version of the Crow story Ive ever seen.
