1 comments about Wild Goose Qigong V - Soft Palms Qigong - Advanced.
  1. I was very impressed and very happy with the quality and content of this instructional DVD.

I am not a student of the Wild Goose lineage of Chi Kung. But I've been practicing various active and quiescent QiGong/"Chi Kung" forms for 12 years, and I've studied with some very famous and accomplished teachers. And I've had some good success with it - no one will ever mistake me for a Taoist mystic, but I've managed to resolve some chronic health problems and wean myself off anti-depressants and Xanax with some disciplined daily practice. So I like to think that I know a little about chi kung, and can tell the real stuff from the poseurs.

This DVD definitely offers the real stuff. Master Hu's approach to Wild Goose QiGong is somewhat gentler and softer than some other teachers' practice of the Wild goose forms, and word has it from a friend who attended one of his seminars that Hu relies on standing meditation practice (Yi Chuan) to supply much of the internal power which is channeled and refined in forms like this. But there is no mistaking the man's skill and focus.

The form itself takes only a minute or so to complete. But the instructional content of the DVD is over 30 minutes. That should give an idea of the exhaustive and thorough nature of the instruction on this product. The form is broken down into sections, and each section is shown multiple times from various angles, sometimes at various speeds and with sometimes with varying emphasis on hand movements, footwork, body actions, etc. The voiceover instruction is clear and easily understandable. The camerawork is professional and clearly shows everytning. The form is shown in a variety of settings, indoor and outdoor, which adds much to the pleasure of watching the form.

As to the actual worth of the "Soft Palms" set, I have practiced sets with similar actions and footwork, and I can testify that a relatively simply form such as this, practiced with focus, and relaxed vitality (what the Chinese call 'sung') for 15-30 minutes, can have profound beneficial effects on energy circulation, stress reduction, mental clarity and overall wellness. So I have no doubt that this would be a worthwhile addition to any QiGong practioners reportoire.

One caveat: "Soft Palms" is a fairly advanced form in the Wild Goose system. While anyone can benefit from it with dedicated practice, it may be more appropriate (and less frustrating) for experienced QiGong students, and for students who are familar with more foundational work in Wild Goose.

In summary, this is a beautifully made DVD, and I am very glad to have it, especially for the relatively low price.

1 comments about Vampire vs. Vampire.
  1. This is another film in the long line of "Mr. Vampire" Hong Kong horror & action films, however it wasn't quite as entertaining. In this film one-eyebrow-priest and his two bumbling disciples are raising a baby vampire (!) and struggling to discover the cause of poisoned river in their home town. Their quest is complicated by the arrival of a group of nuns and the ghost of a dead prostitute.

While the plot synopsis might sound amusing, instead, I found it to be silly. Some gags were good...But they went too far with the 'baby vampire' whose slapstick gags, strange makeup and weird 'dolphin sounds' were annoying and strange rather than 'cute and endearing.'

Ching-Ying Lam directs and stars in this lackluster sequel to this Classic Hong Kong comedy series.

5 comments about Samurai Showdown: The Motion Picture.
  1. I just saw this movie and it was great. I have the movie dubbe in english not english subtitles. When I bought it today, I was amazed at the animation and when Haohmaru defeats Earthquake and
Genan was done beautifully. Although, what was weird is that Ukyo
was on the cover but not in the movie, you only see Ukyo at the Japaneese credits(weird huh?)anywase. A good movie, and a good video game.

  2. To put it simply, this is a bad, bad movie, an example of what happens when you try to make a video game into a movie. The animation is badly done, the voice acting sub-par --the voices don't even match the characters very well -- and the frequent action sequences are retro to the extreme and just don't look good.... I'm sorry to everyone who liked this film, but I love all anime, and I couldn't get halfway through this one. Avoid this movie at all costs.

  3. I have the movie and I agree with both reviewers that there are some bad elements of the movie. I was not too impressed about the battle scenes. I was hoping to have more sequences of the bad guys and the goods guys with all the characters in the movie. Instead they restricted most of the power abilities they could have shown in the movie. If they have took the effort to make a great movie, there would have made enough money to make a trilogy. Within the story line of the games, there was a whole lot more going on in the story then what they showed in the movie. I own the movie and regardless of its aweful film, I bought it because its my favourite game. I am glad another Samurai Shodown game cam out onto the Playstation 2. I was so upset about SNK disapearing forever..(Really the person who made this movie should realize that its a Japanese game, so it should've been spelled correctly. SAMURAI SHODOWN NO "W")
    Thanks for reading my review.

  4. What a perfect buy and it was great entertaining. I loved the action go see this. I love the game and the motion picture.

  5. Stay away from this movie. Keep a distance of 100 yards or greater at all times. This movie is a total piece of somethin. Terrible voice overs, ghetto 80's art, dumb plot. Go buy a value meal or something instead.

2 comments about Dragon Lee: Champ Against Champ/Rage of the Dragon/Dragon on Fire/Golden Dragon, Silver Snake.
  1. Here it is. Four of Dragon Lee's best films. They are all directed by Godfrey Ho and feature lots of kung fu action!

    1. CHAMP AGAINST CHAMP
4 STARS. A martial arts epic about Dragon Lee losing his leg after fight. So he makes a steal leg and kicks butt!

    2. RAGE OF THE DRAGON
5 STARS. Dragon's parents are brutally murdered so he goes to take revenge.

    3. DRAGON ON FIRE
5 STARS. Dragon Lee's masterpiece! Also stars John Liu and Tino Wong.

    4.GOLDEN DRAGON, SILVER SNAKE
5 STARS. A great movie with Dragon kicking butt against ruthless criminals.

The ultimate collection for Dragon Lee fans. Highly reccomended!

  2. I had seen the other Bruce Lee impersonators before and never liked there movies but I got this cause it was cheep and thought I would try it. Champ against Champ is a very good movie. It is a little cheesy but just the right amount of cheesiness to be funny and not annoying. If all the movies where as good as it I would give it 5 stars. The other 3 movies are good too but just not as good as Champ against Champ. Dragon Lee is by far the best Bruce Lee impersonator ever.

5 comments about 36 Deadly Styles.
  1. A great film with a great plot. Ghost Face Killer, along side with the amazing and deadly Silver Fox are searching out Jack Long and the book containing the 36 deadly styles of kung fu. While Ghost face tracks jack down, Silver Fox kills all that have gone against them. While on there mission of death, the past comes back to haunt them, and a martial masterpiece takes place as Ghost face meets Jack Long, and Silver Fox clashes with an enemy from his past. Hwang Jang lee is amazing, and enough can't be said about Jack and Mark (ghost face)Long. Some great kung fu, and a great movie, by one of the best martial arts directors Joseph Kuo. a must see.

  2. With a name like "The 36 Deadly Styles" and the accompanying box art, your mouth starts to water. Yet you will likely be somewhat disappointed. The fighting in the first and middle reels is good, but not great. I found myself fast-forwarding through most the film --- a bad sign. The plot is passable. Things get rockin' in the final reel and really rockin' in the last few minutes. Is that enough to buy the film? Add fan-favorite Jack Long to the mix, and you'll probably want this one.

  3. A fair movie, was a sleeper hit. Great cast but I found the movie actually quite boring throughout the first half. The movie gets better as it goes along. It follows the basic plot of good guys v.s. bad guys, and one clan v.s. another clan. The main star is a young man whose father was killed and who was almost killed himself by the same evil clan.

  4. This movie could have been better with the cast they have. Look for Bolo In dreadlocks. Best part about this movie is the opening theme song & the final fight rematch between Ghostface Killer & Jack Long (Chess boxing)

  5. it has problems. 2 to be exact but nothing that makes it unwatchable. No, sir. The non removable german subtitles are distracting, but it's not exactly the best movie and when the action starts, they don't really talk anyway. Also , it is not remastered but is VERY watchable. VERY!!!!!!
But not all is bad. It is widescreened to perfection. That always helps:)

The story starts out with mark long and hwang jang lee plotting to get a hold of the secret kung fu book containing the 36 deadly styles. And mark long I think is actually playing ghost faced killer. But sorry only one fight with him(it's good though). So the movie starts out with chan lau and some goons jumping these kids from shaolin and one of them makes it through it alive. When he recovers he is put to work at the shaolin temple where he meets the VERY NICE Jeanie Chiang. God I love women who can fight. So 2 more parts of the story to go over here. Hwang Jang Lee just goes aroound beating people down ala Ghost Faced in mystery of chess boxing. And mark long goes to get the 36 styles book and has to get it frm jack long. TOP 10 FIGHT IN CINEMA HISTORY HERE. WAYYYYYYY better than the end of mystery of C.B. Not as long btu way better. So then Bolo shows up and this was my biggest dissapointment. He had a great wig, just didn't really fight. And his brother was even worse. Also the kid wasn't very good and the final fight was great but still doesn't make any sense to me. i give Kuo credit for coming up with something unique, but I don't think eye tolreance of smoke is a special kung fu skill and I doubt oyu could ever learn it. So a 3 star movie. But a rematch from the Mystery of Chessboxing(Ninja Checkmate) is just too good to not reccomend this.

5 comments about Ultimate Fighting Championship 1.
  1. This review is based on the tape i viewed in PAL format and not NTSC.
What i liked about this tape is that the fighters knew little or nothing from their opponent. In that time there was also little or no cross-traing. Every fighter represents their specific style. But from this first UFC event it becomes clear that Brazilian Jiu Jiutsu will become the dominant style in this type of combat.
To give you an idea what you can espect, i tell you about an interview that is on this tape with Kevin Rosier who is participating in this event. The interviewer asks him what his strategy is. Kevin answers: "Let him hit me".
I was very excited to see Gerard Gordeau competing in this tournament because he, like myself, is from the Netherlands and i like the art of karate with he represents. The action is wild and very hard. You will see a very big SUMO wrestler who is not able to stop a karate champion and gets kicked and punched in the face when he is down on the ground. You will see two big guys who are both kickboxing champions really hurting and punishing eachother. But also you will learn about the effectiveness of the art of brazilian Jiu Jiutsu as Royce Gracie demonstrates his techniques in bringing opponents much heavier then himself to the ground and then shows great finishing techniques in the groundfight.
Because it is the first UFC and in many ways a historical moment in history of MMA i would recommend this DVD. It looks good with your collection.

  2. Hey Greverio, news flash GRACIE IS BORING, the crowd was booing because shamrock should have won, oh let's waqtch a guy put his opponent in a leg lock for 20 minutes, (yeay) oh and shamrock is still around today where is gracie. other then that this event is a pretty solid debut for ufc

  3. ALOT OF PEOPLE THINK GRACIE ISN"T A GREAT FIGHTER.WELL THE FIGHTERS TODAY CAN BARELY MAKE IT TROUGH TWO 5 MINUTE ROUNDS.THIS DVD SHOWS THE WAY IT SHOULD BE. NO TIME LIMITS,AND THE ONLY RULES WERE NO BITING OR EYE GOUGING. THERE WERE NO ROUNDS EITHER. SO IF YOU WANT TO SEEREAL MMA COMPETITION BY THIS DVD!

  4. A must buy for a mixed martial arts fan in order to see the changes in the sport since 1994. However, I would buy it new from the UFC for 15 bucks.

  5. The first taste the US got of NHB combat. This UFC did a great job of getting 8 different Martial Arts stylists together in a pretty exciting tournament. The first fight between Teila Tuli and Gerald Gordeau set the pace to how this tounrnament is going to be.
