  1. The low rating isn't for the movie. I suppose it could be a great movie, I just couldn't be bothered to watch it. The reason is simple, this is the worst looking DVD I have seen since the beginning of DVD history. Remember those old Scimitar and Manacy DVDs that looked like someone took an old VHS tape and mastered it to DVD? That's what this looks like. The picture is chock full of scratches and blemishes and all the colors are washed out. The sound is no better. Sadly, the folks over at Fusian seem so proud of their effort that they have a split-screen, special feature that A-Bs their "remastering" work. I will not purchase anything else from this company.

  1. This DVD has Courses 5,6,7 & 8 out of the complete 12 Volume series. Dr. Yang is by far the best teacher on the subject of grappling, and this entire series is fantastic. The DVD is cheaper than buying all of the VHS, and much less expensive than a seminar, but he really puts it all into this DVD. The instruction is very clear, and he has students attempt the technique and corrects their mistakes, which is great to learn from. My partner and I make these same mistakes at first, and find ourselves watching these corrections often. The DVD itself is all digital picture and sound and has tons and tons of DVD-only content, like Video Clips of Dr. Yang doing kung fu and tai chi in other videos and a catalog that sends you right to the ymaa store on your PC.

  2. I have been fortunate enough to learn the techniques from Dr. Yang himself in his seminars. He is a great teacher, a highly developed master, and a rare individual. If you've read any of his books you know how well organized, researched, and thorough his writing is. Well his videos are the same. These DVDs are as good as you can get. Nothing compares to one on one instruction, but these techniques are very clearly demonstated with close ups and alternate angles. A person can get a very good understanding by watching these and practicing along with a partner.
Some user complained about watching students "fumble" around with the techniques while Dr. Yang corrects them (mostly on the higher level DVDs). There is a good reason for this. These students are well practiced and still make mistakes. They are likely to be the same mistakes you will make. This method helps you recognize them as mistakes so you can refine your technique. Well worth the money! I recomend his seminars first and buy the DVD to review and practice between seminars.

  3. The DVD has tons of stuff on it, enough to learn for years. Military and law professionals should be training this stuff.

  1. This is the single most entertaining and moving film I can recall seeing in recent years. This film was unbelievably pathetic on so many levels, ie: historical accuracy, writing, acting, plot, theme, etc., I can't begin to comment. It was entertaining in the sense we were throwing things at OUR screen while correcting all the inaccuracies, poor writing and just plain bad acting. I was moved through a variety of emotions while watching this film, including, anger, disgust, nausea, and shock. No mortal is perfect and we all have to eat but how they EVER got the great Toshiro Mifune involved in this film (and role) has to be the ultimate cinematic mystery of our time. My words may sound "..spiteful.." but they are as true and accurate as I can make them about this embarrassment of an American film.

  2. I enjoyed this film a lot. Of course I'm a Toshiro Mifune fan, not to mention I've always liked Richard Boone. This isn't Macbeth, but it doesn't try to be or need to be. It's simply a good story with good acting. If you enjoy Shogun you will probably enjoy this as well.

  1. Bruce Lee is one of my idols, and I really enjoyed this DVD, it is interesting, and really really good.

  2. Like Jeet Kune Do, I'll keep this review simple and direct. This DVD is the best I have ever seen. If you study Jeet Kune Do or just interested in self defense get this DVD. If your only interested in self defense, you will want to study JKD after seeing this DVD. I suggest you try Sifu Strongs 4 DVD set. All 4 are JKD at a higher level.

  1. The fight scenes in this movie are totally amazing. The dubbing in the movie is horrible so if you are into movies like that such as godzilla, then this movie is for you.

  2. Bolo Yeung, the only skilled fighter in this movie, is not the star of the film as the box would have you believe. The main character is an actor who shows no skill in martial arts. His character flips out in the beginning after killing someone and then runs away. The rest of the plot thereafter is nearly indecipherable. Bolo is the 'Darth Vader' of the movie. The big villain uses him to beat good guys to death. Bolo's Shotokan is excellent in the movie, but that is the works only redeaming value.

  3. Well,This movie is about a young man who thinks that he killed his girlfriends brother. In doing so runs off and smashes his hand and swears to never again use his fists. He gets a job at
a pier working for some bad men. The boss of the bad men sells
out to the syndicate and in turn has to get rid of the workers
at the pier any way he can. When his friends start ending up dead the young man must once again raise his fists. The star of the movie is Chan Wai Man who kung fu movie collectors know very well as a common movie villian - but, here he is the good guy. The movie is old and originally had a different title. When they repackaged and changed the title - they capitalized on the fame of Bolo Yeung who plays one of the villians in the movie. The Fighting is solid - I have seen far better and far worse. Their are some minor volume problems in the movie as well. I have given this movie three stars for the simple fact that I have seen hundreds of kung fu movies and martial arts movies and this rates slightly above average to me.

  4. If you like kung fu movies, you'll probably get some mild enjoyment (keyword: mild) out of "Chinese Hercules." It's about a guy who kills his fiance's brother. Feeling awful about it, he runs off to start a new life and a new identity, vowing never to kill again. But, this being a kung fu movie, you can be damn sure there's gonna be some serious a$$ whuppin' by the time it's done. Bolo "Enter the Dragon" Yeung is heavily hyped on the box (and the movie's title, "Chinese Hercules," is actually one of his nicknames), but he actually only plays a small role as a henchman.
The DVD I got is from Front Row Entertainment. The image is pan and scan, heavily cropped from the film's probable 2.35:1 aspect ratio. The image is extremely bad - very, very faded and scratchy. The sound is dubbed. While purists might complain, I sometimes get a kick out goofy dubbed dialogue. Unsurprisingly, there are no extras.
