5 comments about The Shaolin Temple.
- Downloaded this movie, its fire. The scenes are mad nice. The fighting is crazy if you like kung fu movies this is one you HAVE to have now. Its really good and will keep you watching for sure.
I liked it
- I do not like the part where people eat dogs. So it getes one star. How can you eat a dog? Are you ..... ???
- I'm not a Jet Li fan,,except in Leathal Weapon 4. However, I really enjoyed his performance in this flick,,,,,I though his performance was brilliant,,,he was simply outstanding. To keep it simple,,check this one out,,,you will not be dissapointed!!
- You've seen me complain about Westerners who portray the Chinese solely as stick figures and stereotypes. But guess what? Some Chinese are equally guilty of this crime. Including those behind this modern film.
Three outsiders kneel outside the temple for five days. One "must become Shaolin to have his revenge," which we know is wrong, and he will pay a heavy price. The temple has never let in outsiders, but finally the Grand Master ends his lengthy meditation and decides they must, lest they perish. So we get three new Shaolin kids with awesome sideburns. I think Chinese films mirror American films in this respect. Sideburns are naughty. Just ask Elvis. Thank you very much.
Meanwhile some soldiers come to the temple. They need help repelling those nasty Qing conquerors, which sounds like something I read somewhere. They're allowed in immediately, whereas those other guys who'd been kneeling for three days are not.
It's a test of their dedication. Well, 20 minutes of stereotypes, over-the-top unfunny physical humor, and babbling lunacy tested my dedication, and I failed. I didn't watch the whole DVD.
In minute 20, two guys demonstrated the five styles, same as the very first episode of KUNG FU, the TV series, that's about 25 years older, and which is itself far from original in this respect. Fine wushu, but this isn't new. Next, a bit of sparring. Admonishments not to be lazy. Old guy breaking firewood with his bare hands to overblown brass music. Oooooh.
I can predict the rest. We'll have a big fight, some guys will mature, some guys will die, and good will triumph. Or not. Nobody cares. I'm stopping now. We found this in the flat when we moved in, it's 120 minutes, I watched 23, life's short. Zaijian.
P.S. I just learned there is a sequel. Huh?
- Now the story is decent. I laughed a few times but the drama didn't exactly stick with me. Jet Li starts out the movie as a young kid who has just had his father murdered by an evil Manchu general or something and Jet has been injured fighting with him trying to save his dad. So the monks find him and care for him in the temple and against some of the monks better judgement they make Jet a monk. When these evil guys end up storming the temple, all of the training scenes are very worthwhile. It was not the most coherent of stories but it didn't need to be. Watching Jet doing his solo training was amazing. Drunken style gets pulled out and there are some really cool moves in this fights. They did make a few of the shots look supernatural but it is still pretty good for all of these peoples first movie ever. Jet has talked about before how there was no martial arts choreographer for this movie and how everyone had to provide input and come up with the fights themselves. Jet's sifu in this movie can also be seen as his master in shaolin tepmle 2 and Twin Warriors(aka Tai Chi Master). So don't buy this movie for a gripping story abotu teh Shaolin Temple btu buy it for the sweet martial arts being displayed in Jet Li's first ever movie.

5 comments about Jet Li's Shaolin Fists Collection.
- I'm checking this DVD edition like crazy, based on this incredible "bargain" that this Jet Li compilation seems to be. Mostly, because i know by heart the official filmography of Jet Li before his major breakthrought "Once Upon a time in China". And i mean shaolin films, period films, training videos or whatever. Something's not right, i assure you.
Why: 780 minutes on 2 DVD discs? So much for the quality don't you think? And 10 "movies" for 14 dollars? Of jet Li, the biggest seller in martial arts industry in both Asia and Hollywood? I can't seem to recognize some of these films posted, are these "alternative" names for known films, new films, hidden material, Jet Li's favourite films or training videos? I don't know, but one thing i'm sure: This is not a compilation of Jet Li's early "Shaolin" films. This compilation smells like these old Bruce "Li" or "le" movies, or maybe some Jet Li appereances, bogus material or who knows.
Careful with this edition, at least untill more information comes about this "collection". Some serious research is recommended before you fall into tempation. Because that seems to be the intention here, to catch unprevented fish.
There's absolutely no logic about the incredible amount of posted material, about a big-selling international star, inside 780 minutes in 2 DVD discs, for this price. I smell a rat.
- The other reviewer got it right. Don't know if he bought this DVD or not, but I sure did. I have it in my hands, and have not the slightest urge to open it. In fact, I am going to return it to Amazon. But I should let everybody know why - so it could save you the hassle.
Off the bat, the cover reads "Join Jet Li and top masters from Sholin along with best Shaolin films in one spectacular 10 feature set." There's your clue to know right away that they are not all Jet Li movies. It has just one "feature" called Jet Li's Shaolin Fists, and from what I could tell, it is a documentary on Jet Li's training days. The rest of the non-Jet Li "features" are: Shaolin Traitor, Shaolin Red Master, Shaolin Ex-Monk, Incredible Shaolin Kung Fu, Kid from Tibet, Nanyuan Boxing, Body Weapon, 5 Tiger Sword, and Cannon Boxing. It definitely does not list "Bodyguard from Beijing" - as wrongly described by Amazon.
This is a huge disappointment for a Jet Li fan. That's me. So I gave it a 1 star. In all fairness, it could be worthwhile for a Shaolin martial arts fan. But not for me!
- If you like anything that has to do with Shaolin, this is a must have for your collection. The footage of Shaolin, it's Masters & their training is rare to find. You will get alot of instructional video footage from very famous Shaolin Monks as well. The "Kung Fu movies" that are included are o.k. but the highlight video is without a doubt the Shaolin Fists. You will see some footage of Jet Li performing when he was very young as well. Well worth the price. circleoflifekungfu.com
- This DVD collection is an odd mix - part kung fu action films and part 'how to ...'. As the mix is odd, so is the quality. This varies from the standard, not to clear, quality of the early Hong Kong films to some very poor quality material that looks almost as if it had been shot with an 8-millimeter camera and then transferred to 16 mil film and then transferred to DVD (with the possibility of a few other transfers in between). The kung fu movies are the standard simplistic plot stories that provide an excuse for the principles to "get it on." The 'how to' sections are interesting to watch and informative, although I believe that it would be difficult to learn some of the material from simply having a video (however good) of the the actions.
- I find the collection good. It's helping me to understand a bit more of Kung Fu and Shaolin.
The image quality is not so good, but there are about 10 films in 2 DVDs. By the way, the films are old. I was expecting it. It's not a problem.
I have a complaint about the language options. Simply there isn't. You neither can turn the subtitles on (or off) nor chose the audio language. The films with audio in Chinese have subtitles in both English and Chinese. Most of the films with audio in English doesn't have subtitles.
But I recommend it only if you practise Kung Fu, otherwise I guess you won't like it, for 2 reasons:
(1) 50% of the films within the collection are "training videos", only suitable for those who practise.
(2) it's not a Jet Li's films collection; it seems to be a collection made by Jet Li; you'll see Jet Li only in "Shaolin Fists" film.

5 comments about Once Upon a Time in China III.
- Wong Fei Hung is an important figure, not only to Chinese history, but also to me as a student of the style, which he helped make famous. The Hung Gar Style is traced back to Hung Tsi Kwan (there are lots of debates over the spelling of his name) who taught Luk Ah Choy, and Wong Tai (Wong Fei Hung's grand father) who taught Wong Kei Ying (Fei Hung's father) who refused to teach Fei Hung, forcing him to turn to Luk Ah Choy for lessons. Fei Hung then went on to teach Lam Sai Wing who wrote the book that more or less made the style famous. Hung Gar is a very common style in Southern China, but is very rare stateside with only a small number of schools teaching it. Wong Fei Hung is therefore a matter of great interest to me, which is why I bought this film without actually seeing it first. Sadly I was disappointed.
The voice-overs for the English dub of OUATIC 1 and 2 were decent, and I liked the voice actor behind Jet Li in the first two films. Sadly he was replaced with a less appropriate voice actor. I didn't really notice if any of the other mainstays of the series had different voices, but Fei Hung's voice was very different and not as good as the previous installments. Granted bad voice-overs are to be expected with Kung Fu movies, but why fix what isn't broken? The editing in this movie also leaves a lot to be desired as it is the worst editing I have seen in a modern Kung Fu movie, period. Story line wise the movie is very good with a story that sets the stage for the Boxer Rebellion, which shook the very foundations of the Qing (or Ching depending of your spelling preference) Dynasty. In that time frame the Empress decided to use the anti-foreign attitudes of China to what was supposed to be her advantage. The idea was inspire the Martial Artists to revolt against them; she never anticipated that the Martial Artists (many of them Ming Dynasty patriots) would not only violently revolt against the foreigners, but also the Ching themselves. This movie is kind of a precursor to that bloody massacre, with the empress trying to inspire the revolt by hosting a Lion Head (King) competition. Parts of this story are indeed based on actual history, which make this story perhaps the most intriguing of the trilogy. However, now Wong Fei Hung and Cousin Yee are discussing marriage, and while Wong Fei Hung was married three times it was never to his cousin-by-marriage. The bizarre and arguably incestuous relationship gets even more interesting when Lilly Lee meets up with an old flame that has now turned into a Russian-Japanese double agent who is plotting to kill China's President Li. Also in this film is a poorly portrayed Wong Kei Ying, who was in his prime one of the Ten Tigers of Canton (China's greatest fighters at the time). Here the one fight scene he has he looses... and I am sorry, but seeing such a legendary fighter get beaten was kind of an eye roller. I'm as much of a fan of Wong Kei Ying as I am of Wong Fei Hung... I wasn't happy with how the elder Wong was portrayed. On the plus side while the action sequences failed to meet expectations set by the first two the Lion Head sequences are simply breathtaking. I have always loved Lion head dances and hope that one day my SiFu will allow me to participate in one myself. This movie did a fantastic job or portraying the multiple sides of the Lion Head tradition. On the one side, its fascinating to watch, amazing to participate on, and can be a lot of fun over all. On the dark side, they were used to pass messages around during various revolts, and in many cases Lion Heads were used as vehicles of assault, or assassination. This move does a superb job of focusing on both aspects. Although the movie is still good I only recommend it over all for fans, or completists as this is sadly not the OUATIC series' finer moment, and the casual movie goer may not get into it as much.
- I know that there have been a lot of reviews deploring the relatively lower standards of fight choreography, plot, etc. of this third installment. Yet of the 4, this was the movie that left the deepest impression on this humble reviewer - I remember being moved to tears after watching this as 12 year-old. I do understand, though, why other reviewers might have panned this one - it's much easier to understand tsui hark's intentions from the perspective of someone brought up in a more... "chinese" environment, so to speak.
The theme song of the series (the one with the drums and chinese-trumpets and people chanting "ahhhh... ahhhhhaahhhahhaahhahhh..." - yes, don't you know it) is about a man who wants to become a hero and win glory and honour - he calls others to join him in his quest, and sings of a fire burning in him that is "brighter than the sun" - an example of the sort of nationalistic, patriotic tradition that is very much ingrained into mainland-chinese culture (how much of it is part of a communist government's propaganda-package is anyone's guess). The character of Huang Fei-Hung is the embodiment of all the values inherent in The Patriot: a man unafraid of standing up to oppressive powers (foreign or otherwise) and fighting for the masses. This theme is emphasized throughout the series, and never so well-depicted as in Part III. ***Spoiler*** This episode ultimately ends tragically, as Wong realises that in fighting to "save face" and win honour for his people, he has in reality failed them. As such, the film (in a somewhat didactic approach - it is Tsui Hark, after all) deviates from the stereotypical kung-fu-hero-kills-all-the-baddies-and-saves-the-day ending in an attempt to teach its audience just what it really means to fight for your country - that it isn't just scrabbling for some abstract, pedantic bragging rights, but to be prepared to make sacrifices to bring about change that is real and good.
For those who just want to watch some chop-socking action, catch the first film. But if you're looking for some insight into the source of Chinese nationalistic fervour, and what drives a man to put everything at stake for family and country, this really is one of the essentials.
- vol 3 isnt completely good as the first 2 for me, and here's why.
The last lion scene is a mess... a total mess, they lost control of it, it isnt fun to watch at all even with Jet Li's martial art skill still doesnt help the picture much. I know they havent make vol 4 and 5 to reach here, but let me tell u this, in vol 4 they have the lion fight scene expand to a ..well.. somewhat bigger scale and its whole lot better to watch than the one in here. The lion fight scene is absolutely a downside and its taken at the end of the film which make me feel a bit lost after teh movie. Yet this is still one awesome kung fu movie watch though, the part which involves "club foot" is very unique and charm, it show Jei Li character's charming side, something rather than just supreme fighting skill that attracted all his students and family members and friends around him with trust. And the laughable romance between the 2 goes further that they finally need to meet the parent. This movie is good one with decent fights in between scene, didnt top vol 2, but it still owns its place. Mark my word for it, go find vol4 on ebay, the new guy is just about as good looking as Jet Li if not more, his fighting talent isnt sharp as Jet Li but just a tiny scotch short u hardly can see it. the huge paper lion fighting scene is even better than this one.
- A good movie from the other two. This one is in english..
- Jet Li. China. Wong Fei Hung. Need I say more? The 3rd in the phenomenal series delivers insane action that the rest of the world is just discovering. (Funny enough, through Jet Li's Fearless, Hero, and Unleashed) Well, you like the man, now see the legend. Unofficially, check out Iron Monkey for a prequel to this series.

5 comments about Once Upon a Time in China Trilogy.
- This is a classic trilogy for fans of Jet Li and/or period Kung Fu. Jet Li is 'wong fei hong', a legend in China. As is common for this genre, there's quite a bit of slapstick humor in the first movie. The second and third movie may seem better if you're not so into the clowning around. As usual, Jet Li's kung fu is truly impressive, although the wired choreography is a little annoying at times.
All in all, well worthwhile for anyone interested in (period) kung fu movies or simply admiring Jet Li's talent!
- Be warned that this transfer is so blurry and bad that I couldn't imagine anything being worse. It looks like a bootleg and it was so bad I couldn't even finish watching the first movie...
- The items I purchased were in excellant condition. Recommend buying from this seller in the future.
- First off, buy the "Once Upon a Time in China" Trilogy, not Collection. Collection has far more technical issues than the Trilogy. Unfortunately, since Amazon groups all of its reviews, there's confusion as to which version is being referred to.
Second, there are 6 movies in this series. The first 3 are the ones to focus on (and the ones sold in this package). 4 and 5 don't star Jet Li. Number 6 (Once Upon a Time in China and America) stars Jet Li, but has a different director (Sammo Hung) than 1-3 did (Tsui Hark, HK's Spielberg-some would argue) and is, at best, mediocre.
The OUATIC series is about the adventures of Wong Fei Hung, a Chinese folk hero. This character pops up a lot (as a child in Iron Monkey, Jackie Chan's character in the Drunken Master series). Each portrayal is very different and most aren't based but on the slightest detail to the actual historical character. But that aside, here's what the movies are really about:
Yes, Jet Li's character struggles with a HK overrun with British Imperialists and the woman who loves him and all the drama that follows and. . .honestly, no one really cares. The story is an odd mix. When there aren't action sequences, much of the story plays out like a routine period piece. The story is decent and worth a look, but subsequent viewings will have you simply skipping ahead to the action sequences because. . .
. . .these are simply the best collection of HK/Kung Fu/Wire Fu fight sequences you will ever find. You have an actor at the top of his kung fu game with choreographers who are given a lot of freedom and creativity to use the actors talents, all captured by a director at the peak of his powers. These fight sequences are the stuff of legend, the yardstick that all kung fu fights are measured against. Not to take anything away from other flicks of Jet's like Fist of Legend or Fong Sai Yuk, but these are the best. And to get them all in one package for such a cheap price is nothing short of criminal. I paid a small fortune to get these three films from HK before this version was released.
You'll see some of the most innovative and intense wirework, skill, and choreography you've ever witnessed, stuff that makes the Matrix look tame by comparison, despite coming out years before the Wachowski's ever put word 1 to paper. Every scenario you can imagine is captured, Jet vs. 1, Jet vs. some, Jet vs many, Jet with weapons, Jet with bare hands, Jet with props=like an ubrella, Jet vs. flaming arrows, Jet vs. boss characters in the most insane environments you can imagine. I can't stress it enough, this is as good as it gets. Even skipping over the story, the fight scenes will entertain you and your next several generations long after you're gone. Simple as that. If you're into Kung Fu flicks and somehow have slept on this one, just buy it.
- This is a bit of a renaissance-man-film, if one can say that. It does a lot of things simultaneously. Firstly, it is a great kung fu flick, with some of the best names in the buisness including of course Jet Li, the inimitable Yuen Biao as well as Yuen Wo Ping of later Matrix fame. Secondly, it is a big, well told drama about doctor Wong Fei Hong, a real life character and something of a Chinese folk hero, and the modernisation/changing of Imperial China some hundred and a bit years ago. If you took away the fighting, it would still be a good film, a very rare thing with martial arts films. Thirdly, it is a great opportunity to see how the Chinese themselves (if "only" the Hong Kong Chinese) look upon their own history and their own heroes. That particular time in Chinese history, in which "Once Upon a Time in China" plays out, is not only tumultuous and chaotic, but the actual transitional period between imperial and repulican China.
It is well acted, wonderfully directed, beautifully scored, and a blast to watch. Definitely one of the best films ever to come out of Hong Kong.

5 comments about Twin Warriors.
- Anybody who's anybody will watch this movie. After discovering it in my grandpa's collection of Chinese movies, I've watched this many times. Kungfu from the Shaolin temple is amazing, but best of all when you have Jet Li perform it.
Jet Li and his friend grow up in the temple together, inseparable. But when they get kicked out, they go opposite ways and become enemies. Jet Li leads a rebellion agianst the harsh government of which his friend is cruelly abusing his status as lieutenant. Betrayals or sorts leads Jet Li to found, after meditation, Tai Chi, and a final battle is held with breath-taking fighting scenes.
A light-hearted comedy at times or serious action at others, the Tai Chi Master is truly master of fighting in the movie industry.
- This really isn't a review (though the martial arts choreography in the film is pretty fanciful, it's still pretty solid). What I'd like to know is whether or not the featured film in this new edition has been is remastered. I have an earlier Hong Kong edition - however the transfer was mediocre at best. I'd preorder this edition, but I need to know: has Yuen Woo Ping's "Tai Chi Master" been remastered... or is this yet another edition of same lackluster transfer marketed in Hong Kong?
Please advise....
- This movie exists in another form the movie was orginally named "Twin Warriors" i have that movie really great movie about if you are interested in learning about what Tai-Chi is about, along with the fights. i will be getting this movie and watch see if it stands up to the orignal
- One of the best kung fu films I have ever seen. It is absolutely fantastic from start to finish. Great choreography and wire work even though you can see the actual wires used in some scenes. This new DVD release is far superior to the previous Twin Warriors release.
- I agree with some of the other complainants here that the dub seems way off when compared to the subtitles. In some cases it completely changes the meaning / intent of the lines. Overall, it was alright. If ya' turn off the subtitles ya' won't know what you're missing.
Aside from the dub, I really enjoyed this movie. I thought the fight scenes were great and well-executed. I'm a fan of Jet Li (and Jackie Chan movies), and thought this was a great Jet Li flick. The camera work was a bit sub-par, perhaps owing to when it was shot. Seemed a bit grainy or rough to me. But the story and the rest made up for it in my opinion. I'd certainly take this over Warriors of Heaven and Earth, Butterfly Sword or Zu Warriors any day of the week.
If you like this movie, you'll probably like Jet Li's Fearless or Hero as well. Likewise Iron Monkey.
If I had it to do over gain, I'd probably still buy this one, even with the odd dub and slightly so-so image quality (just not as crisp as things like Hero and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). Good times!

5 comments about Once Upon a Time in China Part 2.
- Very, very good movie, on top of that it's a great
martial arts flick. Any Jet-Li fan needs to have
this in their library.
A different reversal of roles, he plays a doctor
who looks like a monk helping people and fighting
occupation over territories in China.
His character Wei-Fong is well layed out, he has
some flaws, but he is great when the time comes.
The martial arts stunts are really top notch,
I can even list all the stunts but the fights
with the White Lotus bunch is outstanding.
Pretty good acting too all around.
- This movie is really freaking weird. I am always surprised to see that this is most peoples favorite entry into the series, and while i would put it at # 3, it still rocks. The story yiou can really tell is just there so they could call it a movie. But watching jet li go off on like 30 people is really really cool. It is weird that they have clubfoot doing all the flip doubles for jet just like in the first movie, so when they fight eachother towards the end, you can see clubfoot doing the flips for himself and jet!!!!! It is really cool if you notice it.
And that brings me to a point I wanted to bring up. I have a huge problem with tsui hark, and even though OUATIC part 1 is one of the top 10 movie I have ever seen of any genre, he really limits some of his actors capabilities, at least when it comes to their martial arts abilities. Yuen biuo I think did one flip and had like 10 or 11 seconds to exchange blows with people. Xio Xio Xhiong???-very unsure of this spelling so i will just call him clubfoot. I have about 5 movies with him in it, and he is one of the best screen fighters I have ever seen. Why tsui hark decides to not show off all of his stuff really pisses me off. I mean jet looks good like he always does, better in fact, but why can't he make clubfoot look badass, I mean this guy is like the freaking horse of the first 2 rpojects, if they didn't have him the movie would have taken a hell of a lot longer and we may not have even had that spectacular ladder fight. So tsui hark finally gave him his chance in part 3 and he showed that he was the bleepin man, but we also found out that he has SUPERB acting skills. It is just too bad that part 3 really sucked, but if you take jat and clubfoot out of the mix, you would have had like a rosumand kwan lion dance or something, it would have been really weird, I don't know if it could have been worse, but it might have been more interesting. Go ahead and watch the whoel series and you will see that Hark is just a really hit and miss type director, I mean my god, look at jet li's the master, he's like , so i figured out in born to defence that I can't direct and now I figured out I can't produce either. And black mask 2, man tsui hark, i would be here all day if i named all of your bad stuff, but i would be here equally long if i was forced to name all of your good ones.
Also amazon lists this as 113 minutes and that is the full version. But I would suggest that you get the trilogy set, I got it used for 7.99, and would have piad like 30 bucks for the first 2, but the 3rd one is really only good for like backround music, YOU GOTTA LOVE THIS MUSIC, IT IS SERIOUSLY MY FAVORITE SONG OF ALL TIME. IT IS SUCH A NICE CHANGE FROM HEARIGN THAT SAME FREAKING STOCK MUSIC THAT WOO-PING AND JOSEOPH KUO AND EVERYBODY!!!! ELSE WOULD USE.
JUST SO YOU PEOPLE KNOW, THIS IS JAMES WONG WHO COMPOSED THIS AND UNFORTUNATELY HE PASSED ON A COUPLE YEARS AGO, BUT LEFT BEHIND A TRUE LEGACY. SO YOU GUYS AND GALS!! MAY REMEMBER HIM AS THE GOVERNER WITH LIKE 9 WIVES, NOT ONLY WAS HE A BRILLIANT ACTOR BUT A COMPOSER WHO OWNS THE TITLE OF MY FAVORITE SONG. AND IT IS PRETTY HARD TO RIVAL STUFF LIEK SABBATH AND HENDRIX AND JETHRO, SO I GOTTA GIVE IT UP TO THE LATE GREAT JAMES WONG.
ALSO LIKE I SAID EARLIER GET THE TRILOGY CAUSE IF THIS IS YOUR FAV IN THE SERIES, THEN YOU NEED THIS. PART 1 HAS DECENT SOUND AND EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT PICTURE AND AWESOME!!!!!! SUBTITLES. BUT THE SECOND DISC IN THE SET IS FAR SUPERIOR TO THE FIRST, IT HAS FREAKING BOOMING 5.1 SOUND AND STILL THE SAME GREAT PICTURE QUALITY. I GOTTA ADMIT THAT I LOVE TO HEAR DONNIES VOICE SO GET THIS IF YOU WANNA SEE THAT STICK FIGHT IN A PERFECTO WIDESREENED PRESENTATION.
- I loved the openning scene. It's quite stylish. The story is simple but effective.
I saw a few compliant in here but as a Chinese I thought I'd give my 2 cents here. I feel that the movie evokes a deep emotion for me as how a classic hero would do in the most difficult times. When their country is surrounded by multiple external invasion forces and oppressed by it's own corrupted govenment, your fellow countrymen mostly cared for themselves and some are even preying on their own for profits, few are still willing to fight for a better future. The hero in this story is not just Wong but those two men who are willing to give up their lives to fight for their countrymen. Wong, again, caught up in the middle of uprising and must utilize his kung fu skill to battle for his beliefs and his love.
I think this is the best of the entire series. If you are only to get one of the series, please get this one.
rent it if you must but don't believe everything you read... this included of course.
- Jet Li once again reprises his role as Master Wong. OUaTIC2 takes the first film and makes it even better. I like the continuation of the characters this movie has. Things have changed since the first film and change even more during it. This introduces the White Lotus society as a mystical force that is demanding that the Westerners leave China, by any means. The action sequences of this film out do and are better than what we see in the original film. This movie also leaves behind the realism and goes more towards a fictional story, it even says that a lot of the film is fictional at the beginning. Overall, really great and if you like the first film, you will LOVE this. It is even better!
- The first couple of times I watched this movie, I did not know who Donnie Yen was. After watching Iron Monkey, Killzone, and Seven Swords, I wanted to see more of his movies. Looking on amazon, I could not believe he was in "Once Upon a Time in China II." How did I miss him ? I already loved this movie, and now knowing Donnie Yen is in it, makes it even better!
The story for II, is Wong Fei-Hung(Jet Li), Aunt 13(Rosamund Kwan), and Foon go to Canton for a medical conference so Wong can display his acupuncture skills. While there, Wong runs up against the White Lotus Society, who hate all foreignors! As Wong battles against the White Lotus, he also eventually meets the local General(Donnie Yen). Their first martial arts scene with stick-fighting is awesome! As you can probably guess, Jet and Donnie are two of my favorite martial artists! Wong eventually saves some schoolchildren, and they all arrive at the English Embassy, where the White Lotus society wages war. After fighting off the Society, he goes to their shrine to battle the Immortal,Invincible Kung! Another great battle ensues, with Wong triumphant. As Wong and Foon attempt to meet with the "rebellion" at the docks, General Len comes to stop them. The final battle between Jet and Donnie is fantastic!!! I can't believe I did not know who he was the first time!
I liked the further subplot of the interaction between Wong, Foon, and Aunt 13. Wong is always yelling at Foon, especially when Wong seems to catch him touching or holding Aunt 13. Foon is in love with Aunt 13, while she obviously is infatuated with Wong.
The DVD picture is very good. And the sound is also very good.
The Extra's on the DVD are a bit thin.
* There is the original theatrical movie, and then an English Dubbed Version.
* There are 4 trailers
* There are filmographies of director Tsui Hark, Jet Li, Donnie Yen, and Rosamond Kwan.
Even though I believe both Once Upon movies are great, I thought this was the better one plot-wise, and with better martial arts scenes!

- I'm not sure what movie Amazon thinks this is, but it's actually a Wong Fei Hong pic starring Jet Li. And it's not his best, either. Yuen Woo-Ping did do the action choreography so it does have great fight scenes. Story was lacking though. Please, Amazon, try to get the titles and stars on these Chinese movies correct for once.
- Not widely regarded as an extension of the "Once Upon A Time In China" series, "Last Hero In China" tends to go unmentioned as far as guilty-pleasure entertainments go. I believe that the film's quality (though the Wong Jing humor is debatable) is right on par with the series, as once again Jet Li braids his hair to assume the identity of Wong Fei-Hung and rip some naughty miscreants a new one. Yes, Jet Li is in the role NOT Jackie Chan, as Amazon's blurb mistakenly implies. Though both actors have personified the role, it is in this film's final fight that I finally got to see Jet Li's bout at Drunken Boxing for my first time ever (thus the review's title). If he does it in older movies, I haven't seen it yet. But he demonstrates the stance with all the effortless acrobatic ability his legions of fans have grown accustomed to. Plus, Yuen "you only wish you could choreograph action like me" Woo-Ping offers us a shot at Fei-Hung delving into Chicken Style against a ten-man centipede, plus numerous other wire-fu goodies that'll put a stoned grin onto any viewers face.
No real special features on the disc to even mention save the inherent but ever-necessary widescreen, but then again I own the HK version. The only drawback...? Where's Auntie 13 (Rosamund Kwan)? She writes Fei-Hung a letter in the movie, but that's all we get. Sigh... But enjoy -- this is as ridiculously fun a movie as you could want from Sir Jet.
- This was such an awesome movie.
Remove everything you ever knew about the Once upon a time in china series from your head, except for Jet Li playing the serious Wong fei-hung. Then make this movie one of the craziest and funniest movies ever and stick Wong fei-hung in the middle of it. What you have is a very enjoyable movie. And as much as I did like it, the music was the best part for me. For those of you that know the OUATIC series, you know Tsui Hark was the first ones to put lyrics in a movie to the Wong fei-hung theme song. Well then Jing Wong was the second. Great Soundtrack.
All you people trying to stick through it all the way, please wait until the end fight.
- But if you are a HUGE HUGE HUGE fan of Jet Li playign wong fei-hung, like I am, then this will be a VERY funny movie for you.
The story starts out with a some outlaws being chased by the government, and these guys are pretty tough. One of the guys took a guard by the head and threw his body onto like a shelf or something and the guys body cripples in half like he was holding a pillow.
You are going to get a lot of that type of action. I am a HUGE fan of the old school peking style that Lau Kar Leung used, I love the hand to hand. And while you don't get too much of that, you get enough and the stunt are really cool.
Now my favorite part of this movie are the ones where he has this CRAZY general talking to Wong, I can't even explain the way the guy was acting, it was sow eird and it was also kinda cool. So Jet is sitting in a chair and the general is asking to see his kung fu skills and the general is so close to the face(on purpose of course) to Jet's face you can just see how great of an actor for making it this whole scene without busting out laughing. CAUSE THE GENERAL WAS THE MAN, HE IS THE ONE WHO MAKES THIS MOVIE FUNNY, JUST TRY TO TELL ME THAT THIS IS NOT THE GREATEST VOICE ACTING JOB IN THE HISTORY OF DUBBING, but I will get back to this when I tell you the dvd that you should seek out.
So I don't want to give the story away cause it's not that great but very very funny.
So like I said in another review of this, remove everything you knew about the OUATIC series except leave wong as a serious guy. Then make everything that happens around him just a strait up slap stick comedy and see how wong react, it is absolutely hilarious.
Now I wanna go over some of the reasons you should see this movie.
WONG FEI-HUNG VS. MASTER KILLER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Beardy and bucktooth reunited, to know about this you have to go 11 years before this film was made and watch legend of a fighter. It is my favorite MA movie EVER, and I have a review on this on the vhs side under secret master. The chemistry was absolutely beautiful in that movie.
IF YOU ARE A FAN OF JET LI, THEN I SHOULD GO AHEAD AND TELL YOU THIS IS MY 2ND FAV JET LI AS WONG MOVIE EVER. so in other words I rate it #2 out of the 5 he was in.
BUT I ALSO RATE THIS MOVIE ABOVE LEGEND 1 AND 2, ENFORCER, EVIL CULT, KISS OF THE DRAGON, OK I GUESS I SHOULD HAVE LISTED THE ONES I LIKE MORE INSTEAD CAUSE THIS IS LIKE A TOP 3 JET MOVIE FOR ME.
I'm not a fan of most of of Jing Wong's stuff, but this one I feel is one of his better efforts, ALSO JET'S ACTING PERFORMANCE IN THIS RIVALS THE 1ST OUATIC MOVIE. SO DEFINITELY ONE OF HIS BEST ACTING JOBS.
Now the dvd that I have is 105 MINUTES LONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i mean it wass almost too freaking long for me, now how often does that happen in kung fu. How many people said in secret rivals like oh I wish they would have cut out some of the training sequences or that funny part could have gone or the final fight could have been a bit shorter? The version that I have is from Red Sun. It is full screened but the movie has a very good picture and the full screened seriously does not even affect anything!
SO OVERALL A VERY WEIRD MOVIE AND YEAH JUST VERY WEIRD. BUT DEFINITELY FOR ANY JET LI FAN, SO PLEASE TAKE YOUR TIME TO SEEK THIS OUT AND DO NOT BUY THIS VERSION, CAUSE IT SI NOTHING BUT BAD REVIEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Also the sountrack to this is the freaking shiznit.
- I am writing this review without having even seen the movie itself, for the shock I got as I received this product was enough. I got the dvd, and the first thing that hit me was that the cover did not fit on the box well.. why? because it was printed on a home printer, and when I opened it, the product itself apparently was burned at home as well. Basically, I paid for an original movie and got a bootleg.
