- This movie exists in another form the movie was orginally named "Twin Warriors" i have that movie really great movie about if you are interested in learning about what Tai-Chi is about, along with the fights. i will be getting this movie and watch see if it stands up to the orignal
- One of the best kung fu films I have ever seen. It is absolutely fantastic from start to finish. Great choreography and wire work even though you can see the actual wires used in some scenes. This new DVD release is far superior to the previous Twin Warriors release.
- I agree with some of the other complainants here that the dub seems way off when compared to the subtitles. In some cases it completely changes the meaning / intent of the lines. Overall, it was alright. If ya' turn off the subtitles ya' won't know what you're missing.
Aside from the dub, I really enjoyed this movie. I thought the fight scenes were great and well-executed. I'm a fan of Jet Li (and Jackie Chan movies), and thought this was a great Jet Li flick. The camera work was a bit sub-par, perhaps owing to when it was shot. Seemed a bit grainy or rough to me. But the story and the rest made up for it in my opinion. I'd certainly take this over Warriors of Heaven and Earth, Butterfly Sword or Zu Warriors any day of the week.
If you like this movie, you'll probably like Jet Li's Fearless or Hero as well. Likewise Iron Monkey.
If I had it to do over gain, I'd probably still buy this one, even with the odd dub and slightly so-so image quality (just not as crisp as things like Hero and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). Good times!
- I enjoyed this move a lot, very entertaining. I tried to rent Tai Chi Master, and was told it had been re-released as Twin Warrior? Now I see that the reviews for the two movies are intermingled here on Amazon...so is are they the same movie?
- I already forgot the movie. Made no impact. I'm not sure what I expected so I should not be disappointed.

5 comments about Once Upon a Time in China #1.
- Jet Li chinese movies are very entertaining. If you don't know this already and like martial arts, get it.
- Jet Li is Wong Fei-Hung, a Chinese leader, who is also skilled in martial arts. Wong Fei-Hung is seeing the influence of the USA and England in China, and he attempts to learn some things about it in an effort to slow it down, since people he personally knows are enchanted by the allure of advanced technology and gold.
The film is set in the 1900's, as one of the supporting characters uses a first-generation camera for photography. This film is about 20% action, 80% story, so it is not a continuous kung fu fest. Jet Li was in his 20's when he made this film, so if you want to see what he was like before he became a superstar, this film is worth seeing-especially if you consider the low price it typically commands ($7-$10 brand new).
- I was definitely in the mood for Jet Li, and thus I grabbed "Once Upon a Time in China." The movie is about Wong Fei-Hung (Jet Li) a Chinese martial arts expert who protects the Chinese people from the foreignors (British and Americans) invading his land. Fei-Hung starts a militia to help protect the people, and they wind up getting in trouble by fighting with a local mob group. Fei-Hung also runs afoul with the local Magistrate who is kowtowing to the foreignors. Fei-Hung later fights with another martial arts expert, Iron Vest Yim, who wants to start his own Martial Arts school. All the plots come to a climax on the American base, where the Americans shoot at the British and Chinese, while trying to steal Chinese women to bring back to America. Yes, the plot is a bit out there, but the martial arts scenes are outstanding. Especially the final fight scene between Fei-Hung and Iron Vest!
There is alot of comedy intermixed in the storyline also. One of the funniest scenes, is where a Western camera is brought to Fei-Hungs house, and a picture is to be taken of him, another person and a bird. The camera goes off with a boom, and the bird inside the cage is turned to fried chicken! Pretty hilarious.
The picture quality is not the greatest for a DVD, but still very watchable. How can you not love the martial arts scenes in this movie?
There are some extras on the DVD:
* There is a commentary from martial arts reviewer Ric Meyers.
* 5 movie trailers, including one for "Once upon a time in china"
* Talent files for Tsui Hark, Jet Li, and Rosamund Kwan. The files were a bit underwhelming, and they did not have a full bio for all of Jet Li's movies.
The DVD also has 2 versions. The original Theatrical version and the English dubbed version. I watched the cantonese version, with English subtitles which was fine!
- An Incredible kung fu movie! I recommend it to all martial arts lovers and fans of Jet Li. If one admires good kung fu fighting and interesting plot - this is it! This and the rest 2 parts of the trilogy are the best movies that Jet Li has done! I love it!
- Despite the martial arts filled story, the movies best scenes are of portrayal of Chinese persecution. It portrayed the hard choices that had to be made to respect your leadership or to follow your need to make it right. In the end, movie is not amazing in contrast to the next Once Upon a Time in China 2, but it is a good movie to watch.

- One disc has evil cult and dr wai, and I think there are one other disc, with young jet footage and a long american crowd interview. All in this is worth viewing except dr. wai. This movie may be watchable in a good transfered version, but the subtitles are IMPOSSIBLE TO READ and the picture is the worst that I HAVE EVER SEEN for this new of a movie. So I will go over them all.
DR wai- pretty good, but impossible to watch with this version
Evil Cutl Master- very good movie, it's one of those frenetic movies where people have like special powers, but prett good. This movie has imbedded subs. but they were VERY EASY TO READ, which I have never experienced. They are outline in black very nicely. The picture quality is also very good. The sound quality is a =nother story, you will have to turn it up really loud. Aside from that, this version of the movie is good.
Interview, Highlights-----all worth watching, your average bonus feature, but a little better.
- I have not seen this particular collection but I picked it up for my sister for her birthday this year and for her it was great. A little background on her; She's 19 and loves anything Asian, yet she knows about *nothing* about Asian history, what she likes is it's culture now i.e. anime and Dir En Grey and one of her favorite pastimes is checking out Asian men. I, myself, *love* Jet Li films and think he's an amazing Martial Artists so I'm sure I'd love this collection anywhoo but for her she loved it because she thinks Jet Li and the many other Asians in the films were 'hot' and the martial arts in the films are simply a bonus since she enjoys violence also. She told me that and the that she thought the plots were weak but who cares because Asians are hot (She loved The Fast and the Furious, Tokyo Drift so what more can you expect).
- The Jet Li Collection has a nice interview with Jet Li, interspersed with footage from various film and "Lee-thal Weapon" shows footage of a very young Li Lainjie at wushu competitions.
The two movies that are included in this set are ok. The "Evil Cult" is kind of a standard period kung fu movie, with a reasonably standard plot (and acting skills). It's not as good as some of the classics with Jet Li (Once upon a time in China, Fong Sai Yook etc), but it's ok. Dr Wai is perhaps the more interesting movies as the story line is original and creative, although the action in the movie is very reminiscent of Indianna Jones type scenes. There's not a lot of kung fu, but the up side is there's also not a lot of plasticky hairpieces and rather stilted deliveries. It's also interesting to see Jet Li and Rosamund Kwan interacting on the screen not as Wong Fei Hong and Aunt 13.
The real minus is that Dr Wai, which seemed to have the most potential for being interesting/different, had sound only coming through one speaker and subtitles so blurry you could barely make them out.
For $11.99, it's probably worth it IF you're a Jet Li fan.
- This collection has poor subtitles, bad video quality, and false representation as to what is on offer, the first two movies are what they claim, where as the 2nd disc contains poor quality documentary on Jet Li, so may be great for a Jet Li fanatic, but not so a Jet Li movie buff!
- I bought this for my 17 year old brother in law for Christmas. He has become a Jet Li fan because of my influence, so I was more than pleased to add this to his collection. He has enjoyed it thus far.

- Don't take this movie for more than what it is, a comedy. It was funny, Jet Li fans won't find what they're looking for, if they want typical Jet Li. It's some pretty good fighting scenes at the end, especially when Frankie, turns from a coward to a fighting machine. If you watch this movie not expecting much, you'll be pleased.
- Jing Wong truly sinks to a new low with this movie. Jet has one oustanding action sequence but other than that, he just isn't used.
Jacky Cheung is the star of this movie and plays an actor who absolutely never uses stunt doubles. It became apparent within 5 minutes that this movie was made to make fun of Jackie Chan. Of course it didn't have to be so obvious but Jing Wong just keeps driving it into your head that he does his own stunts. So if you are familiar with Jing then you know this isn't going to be a tribute to Jackie. Oh no, it is a punch to the throat through the movie screen. Jet Li plays Cheung's bodyguard and ends up doing the a stunt for him. After setting up his stupid Jackie Chan character, Jing tries to do a remake of Die Hard. Remember how you never knew what Bruce Willis was going to do and it was always surprising? Well Jing makes about the worst movie possible from here on. Instead of being clever, he makes Jet just keep storming in on the hostages and then flee. At one point he takes a helicopter up and starts shooting right into the buiding at the main bad guy with all of the hostages standing around. After the helicopter crashes into the side of the building it doesn't blow up, it just destroys everything on that floor. So other than one outstanding action sequence between Jet Li and Ben Lam(guy with sunglasses), this movie is a complete waste of time. Even Billy Chow couldn't save this one. Of course it would help if Wong Jing was smart enough to capitalize on the success of Billy Chow and Jet Li in 'Fist of Legend', but instead we don't get to see them fight and get to look at Billy Chow in a thong. Yeah, that it just what I am looking for.
The Universal Laser and Video company version is OK but the imbedded subtitles are sometimes hard to read. There is a version of this released by Dimension Video(grrrr)that has been retitled Meltdown and has been shortened by 10 minutes and also has gotten a horrible new soundtrack including English dubbing and rap music replacing what was in the original. Doesn't matter which one you get because the Chinese version isn't really any better since it is not a good movie to begin with.
- Meltdown has a lot of great things going for it and a lot of stupid things. This is an action packed movie that has some great fights and some other great action scenes. There are a lot of cool characcters in the film, but unfortunately there are plenty of stupid ones as well. The story is ok but the dubbing ruins everything, unless you get your hands on the original Chinese version. The guy that dubs Jet Li's voice sounds...like...he...is.....acting like...William....Shatner acts on the.....original.......Star.....Trek series.
Kit (played by Jet Li) is Frankie Lone's bodyguard, a famous stuntman who has become a disspointment and a drunk coward to those closest to him. He is a big fraud, and Kit has been accustomed to covering for his stunts while not taking the credit. Frankie and Kit become part of a major hostage crisis in a fine HK hotel during a jewelry exhibit. Kit encounters the same men again, two years after they killed his wife and a bus full of school kids.
There are two villains in the movie that are pretty awesome. The first, whose name I can't remember, fights Jet Li about 3/4 through the movie. It is my favorite fight scene of the movie and one of my favorite Jet Li fight scenes in any movie. The fight is intense and quick, beginning with gun shots, then some good ol fancy martial arts, finally ending with an interesting swordsfight, where Kit improvises by using a lighting rod from the ceiling. The other villain is Kong, played by Billy Chau (also appeared as Jet Li's nemesis in Fist of Legend). Unfortunately, Kong only has a very quick fight against Kit early in the movie, but he provides the final fight of the movie against Frankie, lasting a good 5 minutes and again combining martial arts with weapons. Its a good fight, but the previous fight mentioned was much better.
Aside from these great fights, there is a lot of action consisting of lots of gunfire, driving a minivan through the hotel, and even bringing a helicopter into one of the upper stories, creating quite a disaster.
Its the dubbing and the rest of the characters that becomes complete annoyance throughout the film. There is also dumb humor that fails to be funny, and ends up being really cheesy and unsuccessful at creating comedy.
The Chinese language version should provide a better experience for this movie, unfortunately subtitles distract me too. However, if action is all you are after grab Meltdown and it will give you want you want.
- This movie is all about entertaining. The combination between "Die Hard" and typical martial arts flick works in many levels, but the production values are Hong Kong`s, don`t miss that point.Fans of Jet Li are welcome, but action fans be careful. Here we can find scale helicopters burst in flames, exploding building models, chopped off dummies, you name it. The characters are extreme in their own context: Jet Li is a former military now becomed bodygard and stunt actor, loyal, gentleman, honorable, deadly, you know, a portrait of the typical good guy. The bad guys are also extremely violent and cool looking. He doesn't fight or kick much in this film, but he shoots a lot, dodging bullets from a dozen bad guys with machine guns with no scratch at all, his revolver shoots 30 bullets without reloading, he drives a car inside a hall and uses the elevator, that happens to be be the right size...
Well, you have to be in the right mood to watch this film without laughing at the many cartoonish production mistakes. But if you are into Hong Kong low production values action films, you will really enjoy one of the best ones of the 90`s.
By the way, this DVD edition sucks. English dubbed, subtitles, poor sound and no extras, not even a filmography.
- How great of a film is DIE HARD? DIE HARD left such an indelible mark in cinema that movie producers all over the world have been rehashing its film premise ever since. MELTDOWN (aka SHU DAN LONG WEI, aka HIGH RISK), released in 1995, is only one film of many which blatantly [...] Bruce Willis's action opus. On its own merit, MELTDOWN isn't bad but isn't near the top of Jet Li's best flicks in terms of acting, storyline, or kung fu throwdowns. What it's got going for it is its infusion of mayhem and graphic violence, so if you're into that (and what dude isn't?), then it's good times for the viewer.
The far-fetched plot: A deadly early encounter with a terrorist mastermind simply known as the Doctor leaves military Lieutenant Kit Li (Jet Li) a widowed man feeling guilt and in search of revenge. Two years later, Li is now toiling away as a bodyguard to crass, world-renowned kung fu movie star Frankie Lone (Jackie Cheung), who much like Jackie Chan, insists on performing his own stunts. But, unbeknownst to the public, Li actually also serves as Frankie's stunt double on occasions when Frankie has had his drink on. Frankie used to be a heralded martial artist but has "forgotten" the wushu way and is now basically a craven womanizer.
When the posh Grandeur Hotel hosts an invaluable set of Russian jewels, it becomes the point of convergence for Kit, Frankie, and the Doctor and his gang of terrorists. Kit, at last, has a chance to atone for his blunder two years ago. Can he find a way to overcome the mastermind's cunning and ruthlessness? And can Frankie find his long-missing kung fu? Will the plucky girl reporter find love with Kit? Will the dubious film director be defenestrated? Can Jackie Chan forgive MELTDOWN for making a caricature of his persona?
I don't recall the ratio but it seems to me that Jet Li wields a gun here more than he resorts to chop socky. The action sequences are still dang tootin' nifty, but I guess the producers really were going for that DIE HARD sensibility, ergo more firearms. Jet Li remains a very likable persona and his performance is pretty good here as he plays up the stoic, heroic role. As for Jackie Cheung - you either like his performance or you want to slap him silly. I got very annoyed with his incessant mugging and I personally didn't think he was funny, but I know friends who did. His character was meant to be a spoof of Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee, but I didn't much care for it.
Too, the editing staff should've been canned for the inconsistencies left in. There's a scene in which Frankie uses a shoe as a decoy, but the very next moment reveals Frankie shod on both feet. How Kit and the cop got the car out of the elevator to pull out a surprise on the terrorists is a mystery to me. There are several "people" falling out of the skyscraper who are too obviously fake dummies. See what I mean?
Now, I saw MELTDOWN on dvd, dubbed in typically over-the-top English. I just wished I'd screened it in the original Chinese or Cantonese. As I've said elsewhere, more often than not, foreign movies lose something in translation. There's a chance Cheung wouldn't be as grating if he was presented in his native lingo. But, overall, despite its annoyances, MELTDOWN is worth watching for its crazy stunts and fierce violence. And for Jet Li, of course.

5 comments about Cradle 2 the Grave (Widescreen Edition).
- Jet Li and a very familiar supporting cast put on a lackluster story and dialog, but the action somehow makes it all worth it.
- I enjoyed watching this movie, but like most movies of this genre, certain parts left much to be desired. However, I love Jet Li and many of the actors in this movie, and thus I still rate it a 4!
Jet Li is Su, a Taiwanese Intelligence officer who is trying to recover stolen "black diamonds" to bring back to his country. DMX is Tony, who is a master thief, whom steals the black stones from a diamond exchange only to lose them on a subway train trying to save his girlfriend Darryl (Gabrielle Union). The stones eventually wind up recovered by Mr. Chambers (Chi McBride: who does not get any credit at the movie's end?), who hides them in his Club, now run by Odion (Mike Jace from the Shield). Also helping out DMX is his brother, and Tommy ( the great Anthony Anderson)! Anthony is hilarious in this movie! Eventually terrorists led by Ling (Mark Dacascos) and Sona (Kelly Hu) kidnap DMX's daughter to get him to turn over the stones to him. Li and DMX team up to try and recover the stones from Chambers, and then recover DMX's daughter. Tom Arnold has a great role as a comedic arms-dealer, who helps out DMX and Li.
I know some people hated the underground fight scene, but I loved it as it had Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture fighting Jet Li. I wish I could have seen Li bash Tito Ortiz's head in, but unfortunately the director made Tito tough for once in this scene. I kind of smirked when there is a scene of Ortiz defeating Liddell in the cage, which of course never happened in real life!
The chase scene featuring DMX eluding police on an all-terrain vehicle is more comical than exciting. Especially when DMX is hopping from building roof top to roof top!
Jet Li is once again such a great artist to watch. He is so fast and fluid taking out his opponents in this film. The final fight scene between Li and Dacascos is pretty cool, and the finality of the scene would not be a fun way too die! DMX was okay, but I believe he should stick to singing rather than acting or fighting.
Special Features of the DVD:
* Ultimate Fighting Champions: Features the UFC fighters in the film, and how they interacted with Jet Li.
* Choreography of the Camera: features how they used many cameras to film the different angles and scenes of the film, especially the fight scenes.
* DMX video "X Gonna give it to You"
* Cast/Crew
* And the Theatrical trailer of the film. Would have been nice to seen some trailers of other Jet Li films.
Overall an enjoyable action film to watch!
- With the passing of Bruce Lee so long ago, martial arts fans have been begging for a replacement. Many have tried to take his place from Chuck Norris to Jean Claude Van Damme. But none has had that fluid style, that grace that Lee had. The closest we had for a while was Jackie Chan, but he played things more for laughs than anything else. And then came Jet Li.
Jet Li provides that fast paced, frenetic style that Lee had, making his fight sequences look almost like a ballet of violence than a simple fight. He also has a knack for making it look so easy and a screen presence that few in this genre have. So I was pleased to find his newest on video up to par with his best.
CRADLE 2 THE GRAVE features rapper DMX as Fait, a high tech thief who spends the beginning of the movie with his crew pulling off a heist in a diamond exchange. Not only do they end up with a load of regular diamonds, they pick up a bag of black diamonds that they were hired for. As they attempt to escape, they split in two groups. One loses a bag of gems while riding the top of a subway car. The other loses the second bag to Li. But the bag with the black gems is safe in Fait's hand.
The gang returns home and Fait puts his little girl to bed for the night. A doting father, he makes time for her, even helping her say her prayers before bed. Then he gets to work, taking the gems to his fence (Tom Arnold). Knowing something is up, he wants to know who is looking for the gems and what he can get for them.
The gems end up stolen from Arnold and Fait gets a call from the real bad guy, Ling (Mark DaCascos). Ling lets Fait know that he has kidnapped his daughter and that he wants the diamonds...now. By now, Li has joined forces with Fait, letting him know that he is Taiwan secret police. The pair check in with a local gang lord who they know robbed Arnold. Getting no help from him, they do realize where he has hidden the gems.
When they aren't where expected, they split once more in two groups to find them or someone who knows their location. Both pairs end up in some spectacular fight sequences and one in a thrilling car chase involving a four wheel ATV, a motorcycle and tons of police cars.
With little hope in sight, they get a call from Fait's daughter on a cell phone she finds in the van the bad guys have locked her in. Putting together clues she has given them along with the truth about the stones, they set out on a rescue mission. And when that begins, we end up with a set of three fight sequences running simultaneously that are some of the best seen in recent years.
I missed this one at the theater thinking it would be just another chop socky flick. I was wrong. What we have are some dynamite action stars making an action film that a number of directors should study. Why? Because far too many directors these days think that a fight sequence is about close ups of fists connecting or the hero's face. The truth is, as we see here, backing off with the camera gives us a chance to see the whole fight and not just bits and pieces of it.
The final main fight between Li and DaCascos is fantastic. Both are extremely skilled in martial arts and choreographing a fight sequence. Both make it look as fluid as a splattered tray of mercury. The only thing as fluid and slick as this scene is a quart of Pennzoil.
If you love action movies, then this is one not to miss. It delivers on all counts.
- A lot of the critics have been complaining about Cradle 2 The Grave they even as far to say it's trash. The main thing the critics are all complaining about is the acting but who is acutally going to this movie for the acting you're going for the action. Jet Li, Anthony Anderson, DMX and director Andrzej Bartkowiak all worked together on Romeo Must Die while DMX,Drag-On Anthony Anderson , Tom Arnold and director Andrzej Bartkowiak all worked on Exit Wounds together.Andrzej Bartkowiak brings together his regulars and adds Gabirelle Union, Kelly Hu and Mark Dacoassas to the mix. The film has cool action sequences, a hot soundtrack and limtied wire work which is common for these types of films.
- I didnt have high expectations for this movie because the trailer made it seem like your run-of-the-mill action flick. I was able to see it a couple days ago and was pleasantly surprised.
Premise: Fait(DMX), a diamond thief plans an elaborate heist and steal what seems like black diamonds. A former CIA agent kidnaps Fait's daughter in exchange for the diamonds which are really plutonium devices used for war weapons. Fait teams up with Su(Jet Li), a hard-nosed Taiwanese intelligence agent to get his daughter back.
Opinion: The script is decent but I had to penalize it for a couple of things. The movie could do without Anthony Henderson playing a sissy to distract a front desk security officer(doesnt anybody get sick and tired of these black comics playing effeminate roles in movies?),DMX doing stunts on a quad is unbelievable and does Drag-On have to be in very movie involving DMX? Other than that this movie is not that bad. The action scenes are plentiful and contrary to popular belief DMX's acting is better here than he was in Belly. Jet Li is splendid as Su, the Taiwanees agent. Tom Arnold is kind of funny as the go-to-man for weapons and such. The brutally georgeous Gabrielle Union is okay in this movie but she can do much better. All in all the movie is worth a look

5 comments about Black Mask.
- First off, the action in this film is great. Jet Li can kick some major butt, and the scenes with him and Françoise Yip are very good.
The detective friend is funny, the dub is amusing, they went with a kind of Bogart vibe on the voice.
The dub for the girl Tracy is annoying... high pitched and whiney, but she's a plucky enough character to not be completely irredeemable.
All in all, good action movie, and Jet Li is pretty studly as the Black Mask. (although corrugated cardboard is not what I'd have pictured as good mask material)
- Now obviously the new rap music and great american voices they put on make it as bad as possible. But then again, the movie certainly is no gem in it's original language version, that is for sure.
The whole movie had above average action sequences, but the story was unbearable. Not the story itself, but the execution of it is the worst possible. It goes from sickening moments to almost little kid parts between Jet and teh girl. Just freaking horrible.
So the dvd is full screened, music is stupid, voice dubbing is almost as bad as the "jet li collection" movies, but you will get a few good points one or two good laughs, and a decent finale.
- I enjoyed Jet Li in this movie...never mind the dubbing, I can look past that and enjoy the move for what it is...fantasy/action. Four stars...
- I owned this movie in VHS and wanted it on DVD. Great action flic by Jet Li
- i am a huge jet li fan and of course HAD to have this movie. and i did really like it. i think i would have liked it more had it not beed overdubbed in english and had no chinese language option. something for the studio to think about when they undoubtedly end up rereleasing it.

5 comments about Unleashed [HD DVD].
- This was thrilling and disappointing all at once. It takes western martial arts movies to a whole new level, then lets you down gradually, instead of sucking from the very start. As much as I love Jet Li, most of his American movies suck, which is not his fault in the least. Nor is it the fault of his choreographers like Cory Yuen, or in this case, Yuen Woo Ping. These large Hollywood companies just butcher the hell out of the fights in post-production, and this is almost an exception. Does Hollywood believe that that's what we want to see? Six angles for one punch, filmed on a shaky hand-cam? Not me. I hate that. This is still easily Jet's best film since he came to America and blows away crap like "Cradle 2 the Grave" and "The One". Though I must admit that for some reason, I loved "Kiss of the Dragon".
Jet plays Danny, a "dog", raised since childhood by gangster Bob Hoskins to help with collections and other assorted tasks. Hoskins will warn potential deadbeats by threatening to remove Danny's collar, which has a Pavlovian effect on Danny where he knows it's time to kick the tar out of everyone. An accident later leaves Danny injured, wandering, assuming that Hoskins is dead, and into the care of kindly old blind piano-tuner Morgan Freeman and his step-daughter Victoria. Under their influence, Danny starts to come out of his very shy shell and appreciate the nicer things in life, like music, ice cream, warmth (temperature and human), cleanliness, and non-violence. Hoskins isn't dead of course, and Danny will have to fight again for his own freedom.
What bothers me about this movie is that is sets up a silly premise and almost, almost pulls it off. Which wouldn't have bothered me as much if I wasn't so engrossed in Danny's plight. The acting is good all the way around, with an especially impressive performance by Jet. He really pulls off a combination of vicious and deadly under the care of Hoskins, and sweet, shy, and inquisitively wide-eyed under the care of Freeman. It totally sucks you in to the contrasting duality before falling short. It certainly raises some interesting questions about our own feral nature and the effects of civilization. Even more so than Tim Allen's "Jungle 2 Jungle".
The fights are really what attracted me to this, as it should be. After all, this is a Jet Li movie. It likely won't disappoint. All the fights are good, but I am bothered by a film that fails to improve on the opening rumble. The final fight is flawed only by its absurdity of origin, otherwise it rocks. Jet and a bald dude duking it out in a bathroom that's barely larger than a phone booth. These brawls are quite a bit different than any that Jet & Woo Ping have done in the past, together or otherwise. Again, they are over-edited, but in the grainy, dark, "Snatch"-like film quality, they don't suffer as much.
If you like American martial arts films (even though it's technically European), you should see this. It's in a league far beyond most, if not all, in that genre, and nearly transcends several others too... but not quite.
2005. aka: Danny the Dog
- Unleashed (Unrated Widescreen Edition)
This is a great DVD featuring an incredible movie. Unleased is probably one of Jet Li's best films, featuring him as a poor, mistreated "slave" fighting for a cruel master. One day he tastes freedom, and the rest is a dramatic roller coaster. The DVD itself is pretty thin on features, but what's there is pretty decent (behind the scenes, fight sequences, etc). Pick it up! For such a low price, you should unleash it on your home theatre!
- Not at all what i thought it would be like based on other jet li movies. He is a good actor, but this movie is gross and hard to follow much less understand. Surprised Morgan Freeman got involved in this one.
- basically its a story of hope, redemption, and rebirth. Danny(Jet Lee) has been raised as nothing more than an attack dog for his entire life(that he can remember). he has been forced to hurt. forced to kill. he never gets anything in return for the atrocities. he is forced to live in a cage. its the first movie in a while that actually made me care for any characters.
one day a hit is taken out on his owner and company. after things quiet down and the smoke clears Danny is the only man left breathing. he takes his first steps out of the car and to freedom.
He ends up being taken in by a blind Morgan Freeman and his step daughter. their kindness awakens the humanity inside Danny.
i dont want to elaborate on the story beyond that. ill just say this was an amazing movie, and anyone should see it (even non action fans)
great action, great story, great soundtrack, and great acting(the most and best acting ive ever seen from Jet Lee)
apparently the violence was a bit much for some. now, while it was the most brutal violence ive scene in its own stylized subgenre, theres deffinitely more violent fights out there. if the sound of bones bones breaking bothers you, walk away.
- This is a cool martial arts flick that has heart. Its not just about fighting. Its along the lines of Jackie Chan's Heart of the Dragon in that both films show people caring for each other. Both movies show characters who are mentally handicapped and are helped by someone. The non-violence side of the movie shows that Jet Li can really act. That only makes the action scenes where violence is needed all the more better. The martial arts scenes are execellent with Li fighting like a mad, stray dog. Some of the best fighting is in the pit scenes, especially when weapons are dropped in. It isn't as good as Fearless or the Once Upon a Time in China, Tsui Hark series but it does have better acting between Morgan Freeman and Jet Li then pervious Li movies.

- The image and description are for a 2006 Japanese film (Sekiryû no onna) with the international title of THe Legend of the Red Dragon. This is not the Jet Li film from 1994 as indicated by the printed title and cast/director.
- This review is for the movie "The Legend of Red Dragon".
As the review by Christopher Beaumont "draven993" states, Amazon shows the artwork for "The Legend of Red Dragon", but has the product details for a different movie with a similar title. "Legend of the Red Dragon".
The artwork shown is for a movie starring Yu Misaki, and does not have Jet Li.
The product details are for a different movie that does not have Yu Misaki, but does have Jet Li.
The plot of The Legend of Red Dragon is simplistic, about a young girl who grows up to take vengeance on her father's killers. She uses a sword to kill. The subtitles are stupid, the type of dialog I remember from the 1970s Hong Kong chop socky movies. The acting is strictly amateur hour. And the action sequences are clumsy and unbelievable.
There are so many better movies out there to watch. Rent this turkey only if you plan to get drunk and watch this flic with some buddies for talking trash.
