- I hated this Van Damme movie. I own all his others but I could not bring myself to add this to my Van Damme collection. I found this to be a very bad movie with very low production values. There was nothing in this movie for me other than annoyance. Very poor direction, cheap and laughable special effects, particularly the exterior train sequences where the train looks like it is made of wood, illuminated with a light bulb from the inside and pulled along by a piece of string. Bad lighting, badly filmed, executed and edited martial arts and action sequences. Laughable acting performances from all including Van Damme. Very bad audio post production special effects to such an extent that at times you can't hear character dialogue. I got the impression that a lot of this was filmed in very low lighting conditions to hide the cheap sets and obvious poor special effects. Basically the movie is a cheap rip off version from a mix of Under Siege 2 with Steven Seagal and The Cassandra Crossing with the late Richard Harris. I would say to anyone thinking of buying this to go and rent it on the cheap first before splashing out your cash. You might be thankful you did.
- There were so many things wrong with this movie. Featuring Jean Claude van Damme as agent Shaq (I think his name was Shaq...yeah that's right...I think...) who guards a woman who has stolen a powerful hybrid of small pox from the Slovakian government.
By now you're thinking, "What?" Hang with me, we're not done yet.
Shaq and the female thief catch a train heading to Germany. Shaq gets an unpleasant surprise when his American family happens to be on the same train to surprise him.
You're probably blinking in astonishment. Hang on, I'm not even to the conflict yet.
Unfortunately, terrorists hijack the train and put everyone in a room for hostages. Shaq handles the situation by crashing through a window, beating people up for five minutes then getting knocked out with one punch. Yes you read that right. Kicking people and windows are no problem, but a tap on the head, that's another matter.
Shaq escapes and begins to take out the villains bit by bit. One fight scene in the automobile compartment involves Shaq riding a motorcycle out of the compartment, onto the TOP OF THE TRAIN while its STILL MOVING, then JUMPING onto A PASSING TRAIN and riding off that train ONTO THE GROUND and DRIVING AWAY FINE.
No, don't stop reading the review, the movie's not done.
Shaq gets back on the train and fights the last few villains while another train collides with his locomotive. You're probably thinking, "So there's a major train crash?" No, the train collides at the end of the train with the front untouched. Characters explain this as hitting the back of the train...which still doesn't make sense as the rear of the train is connected to the REST of the train. But a friend and I came up with our own theory. You see, the front of the train was going so fast at the moment it was transported to another dimension. Hence only the rear was affected, while the front came by unscathed.
Besides the fact its basically a rip-off of "Under Siege 2" which was "Die Hard" on a train (ripping off a rip-off, how does that work?) this movie will either have you shaking your head in confusion or going for the headache pills from start to finish. The good news is this is one of those bad movies you can make fun of, as opposed to those that make you feel dumber by the minute. Between NATO headquarters being in Bonn to Shaq's wife telling the World Health Organization how to handle diseases like they wouldn't know, you'll find reason to laugh at this movie. Intentional or not.
- I dont normally slate films but this one was asking for it so bad.
OMG- It saddens me to think the director got paid for this.
Please someone- write & direct a good film for Van Damme- he deserves better than this...
- well for its budget this movie is very entertaining and a lot of action has some good fighting van damme is good lots of fun.
- DERAILED
I have always been a huge fan of Jean-Claude Van Damme; in fact I own every one of his films. So the other day I said to my self I should watch one of his films I hadn't seen in a while, "Derailed" was the one I went with. It was a wise choice because this is a very entreating movie, much better then I remembered. I still don't know which I think is better, this film with Van Damme or "Under Siege 2" with Steven Seagal which was also on a train.
The story is about Jacques Kristoff who is hired to escort a woman named Galina Konstantin onto a train and get her across the border. Of course it wasn't that easy since she is carrying a bio weapon on board and some terrorists are after it. Of course in true Van Damme fashion he fights them all on board a speeding train. And to make things worse his family is on board and the virus breaks loose on all the passengers.
Writer's Adam Gierasch, Jace Anderson, and writer producer Boaz Davidson have created a pretty good movie with plenty of action. Under the direction of Bob Misiorowski this film is actually a really good film, even my grandmother liked it. Also along side Boaz Davidson there is seven other producers including Avi Lerner, that is a lot of people producing one film. Of course what sets this apart from other similar films is Van Damme and his style of action, which is excellent and exciting. And of course Van Damme's performance is great as is the rest of the cast. Laura Harring does a good job as Galina who has the virus, and Tomas Arana as Mason Cole is excellent as the lead villain in this film. The rest of the cast is just as good, all the bad guys Van Damme's family [including real life son], and train passengers are amazing in their supporting roles.
This is a very good movie for a boring day at home when you just want to relax. This isn't the best Van Damme film ever but it isn't the worst either. I recommend this film to any body reading this.

- Now in this movie, the director decided to focus on van damme's actin abilites. ???????? It's ok though, he gets by. Not very good acting by any means, but I would put him over some one like dmx or some of these non movie stars trying to be in movies today. I can only give it a 3.5/5 at best, but it got really gory and the movie was all the better for it. What do you expect when you are dealing with gangsters? If the very end was a little stronger and the action was filmed a bit better, I would probably say it was a great movie.
Sorry not to give anything away, but it is the first time I have ever been able to recommend a van damme movie and want you to go experience it for yourself.
The picture is very clear, sound quality in 5.1 is pretty good, and while the music isn't the greatest, just like the movie, it is pretty good. And the making of featurette is, well, interesting.
- This movie was pretty good. If you are a big fan like me, you'll enjoy it. All the emotion he poured into this movie can be deeply felt. If you have a family it hits you harder. You know the heartbreak & the rage you would feel, holding your dead spouse in your arms & wondering what happened to your child.
Van Damme is a different kind of actor, but a good one. Different is good & so was this movie. Not to mention that he's in exellent shape for a 44 yr. old. Looking forward to more movies.
- Wake of Death is one of Jean-Claude Van Damme's latest attempts at dramatic acting. I have to admit, I grew up watching Van Damme and I like the guy. I would love to see him do a great serious film and revive his action film career. I think he could make a great action film if the right script and imaginative director came along.
Sadly, Jean-Claude is not as flexible as he was back in '89 (I'd love to see a gratuitous split shot now!) so the Wake of Death relies heavily on shootouts, car chases and dialogue. Dialogue has never been Jean-Claude's strong point. The film is a bit boring, overdramatic, far-fetched and lacks a satisfying conclusion. The direction by Philippe Martinez is stylish in places but ultimately comes up short in the really important parts: the action scenes.
I lucked out by getting the DVD for under $6. The film has possibilities and it got my expectations up but unfortunately it falls short.
Recommended for huge Van Damme fans only. Check out these films first: Hard Target/Sudden Death
Bloodsport
Timecop
- His look fits the character. His reactions to family deaths are very realistic. Amazing stage presence with an underlying dark yet courageous feel to Van Damme's character.
Once again, Van Damme delivers a powerful tear jerking performance without over-acting his role. His costars arent too shabby either.
I have reviewed some of Van Damme's more recent films including " In Hell"
and one of my all time favorites from Van Damn "Until Death". The difference maker in his latest films is a creative director and producer who focus on believable characters that show vulnerability and human weakness that we all have to some extend in real life. In turn, the audience can relate to Van Damme's character in these movies because they are not "super human" and "far fetched" like the boring and repetitive Steven Seagal characters.
Let me say that I think Steven Seagal is a wonderful person in real life who participates in various charities. On the other hand, he needs to show more weaknesses and not be afraid to change his looks in his movies, IE: grow a beard or even wear some glasses for at least an hour of the movie.
Now, Van Damme isn't afraid to be "un-attractive" or even "un-likable" in his movies. That is the hallmark of a great actor.
I notice that many of the A list Hollywood actors "overact" their roles and yet, they manage to get nominated for starring in boring movies.
Van Damme delivers another excellent performance in this dark thriller without over acting.
I rate this movie 5 stars-
- Now you know action/adventure actors are never highly regarded among the hollywood who's who. Yet after seeing this movie I've witnessed the growth of a superstar from one who just kicked butts to one who truly conveyed the screenwriter's and director's thoughts from the script to the screen. In other words he ROCKED and so did Yam. Loved the stunts too.

- This has always been a favorite movie of mine. I was disappointed that I had picked a movie that was the wrong region. I put it in one DVD and it came up wrong region. Then I put it in another DVD player and beauty away it went. The picture quality was exellent. Like I said before one of my favourite Van Damme movies and there where no hic ups with the recording.
Thanks Amazon you came through for me again when I couldn't find it in the shops here in Australia.Kickboxer
- Excellent martial arts movies a bit corney but my girlfriend loved van damme body. guess i got my work cut out for me.
- On the heels of Bloodsport and the weird sci-fi flick Cyborg came Kickboxer. Here, Jean Claude Van Damne plays Kurt Sloane, the manager and younger brother of kickboxing champion Eric Sloane (played by real-life fighter Dennis Alexio).
While fighting a Thai fighter named Tong Po, Eric gets injured and Kurt vows revenge on him. To this end, he meets a former fighter named Xian Chow and falls in love with his niece Miley.
While much of the film is corny/cheesy but there are some funny parts too. The most funny (to me) is when Xian gets Kurt (Van Damne) drunk in a bar, has him dance (which is one of the funniest things that I have ever seen) and then fight some guys in that bar! Its priceless!
Also, some of the training made me cringe, especially when he made him kick the tree with his injured shin! My friends thought when he did get the tree down and fell to the ground, that was the funniest thing! Even I chuckled a bit because basically he was trying to show Xian he wasn't weak! That's what "machismo" will get you!
Overall, not a bad film!
- Jean Claude Van Damme pumps out yet another indistiguishable movie in which he inevitably beats a guy who would clearly destroy him in real life.
Kurt Sloane (JCVD) is in Thailand for the big fight between his brother - think a pumped up Luigi from Super Mario Brothers - and the baddest, meanest, most deadly kickboxer on the planet, Tong Po. I'm sure there is a verbal play-of-words there with the name Tong Po, but I can't figure it out right now. Naturally, as all JCVD movies go, someone close to him has to suffer before he grows a pair; in this case, his brother gets a beatdown of monumental proportions and is permanently crippled.
Up next for Kurt is training with the master. He must prepare his body to fight Tong Po, and you guessed it, one of the training methods is an intricate pulley system that allows someone to do the splits. Aside from that, a defenseless tree suffers as a result of the training, and Kurt risks becoming a gelding when his master-trainer drops a massive ball from high above onto Kurt's stomach to show how hard and strong his abs had become.
Meanwhile, an convoluted plot takes place where Tong Po's people terrorize a woman Kurt has taken a fancy to, kidnapped the master, and made the leadup to Kurt's battle with Tong Po hell. Luckily for Kurt, every punch in the fight clearly missed his face, and there was no risk of danger or pain whatsoever. It's also especially helpful that Tong Po blatantly shows Kurt the method by which the beatdown will ensue in the upcoming round. It really is the most pathetic defensive fight in history, each blow telegraphed like it's in the Farmer's Almanac. The whole thing is a joke. Tong Po growls, Kurt kicks and/or punches, Tong Po recoils and spits blood, JCVD flexes unnecessarily. One scene is particularly hilarious, as Kurt kicks Tong Po in the face about 43 times - left, right, left, right, ad nauseum.
It's typical JCVD, and if you are like me, going into the movie expecting nearly nothing, then you'll be entertained.
- Kickboxer figures as one of the most exciting and legendary martial films of a very young by then Van Damme.
His elder brother travel to Thailand for defending the title, being the Western champion in this category. But what both ignore is what the will find in that arena. His brother will have to face a sadistic and ruthless fighter who will play dirty, leaving him crippled.
This dramatic fact will make Van Damme encourages and trains with all the rigorousness and maxim discipline with a curious old master, an exotic and sympathetic shaman who will prepare him with wise lessons of life too.
The arresting landscapes of Thailand conform an additional frame of reference, although the predictability of the script. Because the fact twenty years have elapsed it's time to set this entertained and dynamic film in its right place and bringing it back its status cult. It deserves it.
Don't miss it!.

- Universal Soldier meets Species. Jean Clude Van Damme is a Russian police officer who discovers he has a dead twin brother, he never knew, he under goes his brothers identy to find the Russian Mob who killed him. He teams up with his brother's sexy girlfriend (Natasha Henstridge) to battle the Russian Mob.
- This is a great movie. It has action, adventure and even a little romance. A film for people who want more out of a action film then just blood, sex and violence.
- I am not a Van Damme fan (don't care for his stony face and an overdose of martial arts). I happened to catch this at a friend's place. But this movie has a surprisingly good plot, good pace, good action (the car chases could have been toned a notch), good direction and a good performance by Van Damme. I wish he could have displayed some more emotion.
- Directed by Ringo Lam (Replicant), this flick is both fun and intense. The action sequences (martial-arts aside) are impressive and shocking. Van Damme takes on double-duty as twin brothers, but his role is moreover played by a confused outsider who doesn't understand his roots.
The acting (all around) is believable, and the scenario is darker than Van Dammes' previous roles. Enjoy this trip on the wild-side, as Jean Claude actually plays a convincing role caught in the middle of corruption. So you don't like Jean-Claude? Go away. Though no acting genius, Van Damme hasn't tried to be something he is not (Stallone, Schwarzenegger) and he has stuck to fun films that can be enjoyed by all. Director Ringo Lam has thrown a twist into the average Van Damme film. It's actually interesting beyond incredible martial arts. Yes, people, there is a story here. This is a big-budget, blow-your-mind special-effects extravaganza that leaves you saying, how...did they do that? Strap in and hang on. This is Van Dammage like you've never seen before!
- A cop (Van Damme) just found out about something new. He's had a twin brother all these years and didn't know it, but the bad part is that he just found out by finding his twin's dead body. Little does this cop know that his twin brother was a Russian agent. Since he looks just like the person that just died, everybody around town thinks he's someone he's not. When it comes to the mafia and FBI agents, this just might spell trouble.
Like he did in "Double Impact", Jean-Claude Van Damme once again plays the role of twins, although not as much this time around. "Maximum Risk" might be a bit shallow on plot depth, but who cares? Van Damme movies are known for their great stunts, action, and especially the fighting sequences, and let me tell you, there is A LOT of each in this movie. The stunts, special effects, etc. come together as one to make "Maximum Risk" a fast paced, suspense filled adventure that all Van Damme fans should watch. It might not be one of his top five movies, but if you're a fan of other Van Damme movies, then checking out "Maximum Risk" isn't that big of a risk to take.

5 comments about Double Impact.
- NOW I COULD EASYLY SAY THIS WILL GO DOWN AS ONE OF THE GRATEST MOVE EVER MADE IN THE WORLD THAT IS SO FOR SHORE & THAT IS PUTTING IT LIGHTLY
- This is not necessarily my favorite genre of film, but I must say that it is a VERY impressive entertaining film. Jean-Claude Van Damme is SO believable as twin brothers that it is so easy to think that Van Damme has a twin in real life starring in a movie with him.
The martial arts and action is great, as well as a very unique storyline.
I especially enjoyed the (always) great Geoffery Lewis in this. He is a perfect casting choice as the body guard of the twins' late parents, then years later as a friend/partner/protector of the adult twins.
I've never even been a big fan of Van Damme's, but he is great in this. And, as two completely different people! It's very well scripted and very well directed, and the acting is very well done by everyone in the film.
The story is that, as imfants, the baby brothers are orphaned when their parents are murdered by a Chinese businessman and his American associate. Years later, the boys are now grown men, living completely seperate lives, unaware that the other exists until Geoffery Lewis' character brings them together to exact revenge on the people who murdered their parents, and to take back what is rightfully theirs.
This is a film I would highly recommend to anyone who is a fan of this genre of film, and/or anyone who just wants to sit back, eat some popcorn and enjoy some great kick a** action and some awesome martial arts. This is definetly in the same league as any Bruce Lee flick, or any Jackie Chan film, if not better. It has all of the ingredients that this genre of film calls for: Action, adventure, martial arts fighting, murder, betrayal, double crossing, double dealing, revenge, and double Van Damme.
Not a movie that I would own, but one I would highly recommend. My only complaint was there were way too many head-butting scenes. Other than that, well, let's just say that this is a rare gem for the fans of martial arts/action films. Thank you.
- Double Impact stars actionstar Jean-Claude Van Damme in his prime. The movie follows two brothers who are united after being separated as baby's by a tragedy. Together they will have to team up to get the guy who is responsible for that event.
The fun part about Double Impact, is that it stars Jean-Claude Van Damme in a double role. With some nice computereffects he is able to interact with himself in the same room. This is a joy to see.
Being an actionfilm, Double Impact sure has alot of action, but in my opinion it was a bit underwhelming. It is all a bit lame and could have been way better. Van Damme is known for being a karatestar and does some kicks in this film, but it just isn't worked out well. A fight against one of the badguys, where both opponents get the change to take off their shirts, was a real letdown and is finished way too quickly and easily.
As for the rest of the action, which features alot of shooting and explosions, the same thing: Alot of it, but not that spectaculair filmed.
Still, if you are a Jean-Claude van Damme fan, add two stars to this review immediatly, cause you won't be dissapointed. That is certainly the main fun of the film: Jean-Claude van Damme times two. Van Damme manages to create two totally different characters, which is a nice job and once again, fun to see. He does it with alot of humour mixed into it. At the beginning of the film I really had the feeling that I was watching Jean-Claude van Damme times two. But after a while I saw them as totally different characters, meaning that Van Damme did a good job.
So a bit of a letdown in action for me, but it has some nice humouristic moments of the two brothers interacting and annoying each other. And if you are a Van Damme fan and you haven't seen this one yet: shame on you and buy this one right now!
For other action fans: rent it sometime, and see if you find it worth buying.
- Thank you so much for the speedy delivery as it did arrive in time for the holidays. Would do business with again anytime. Thank you!
- To me, one of Van Damme's best movies....check it out you won't be dissapointed, and keep in mind I only like a few of his movies so I'm not one of those guys that like all the crappy movies he made.

5 comments about Cyborg.
- Funny how people write and say how aweful this movie is--they apparently aren't fans. This movie is exactly what a fan would expect to seen--lots and lots of martial arts and fighting. Think of this movie as a post-apocalyptic Bloodsport. This movie is a pure '80's cult movie. If you are looking for Oscar caliber acting and screenwriting, you are looking in the wrong place--Van Damme movies have never been intended for that and never will be.
Plot - C
A very overused post-apocalyptic plot is used where most of society is dying (or is already dead) from a plague and those that aren't dying are either searching for a cure or have resorted to barbarian-like creatures who rape and pillage every little town or city they come to. Enter Van Damme. He plays Gibson who is a freelance mercenary type who is payed to escort people through the city. He encounters the Flesh Pirates who are lead by a menacing leader named Fender. The cure to the plague has been placed into a cyborg (hence the name) and through a chance encounter, Gibson must escort her to Atlanta (which is apparently the headquarters of humanity--at least for the U.S.). Along the way, Gibson meets a female mercenary and they have a brief interlude. She claims to be a able to help Gibson, but really interfers with his progress (the typical damsel in distress). As he jouneys with the Cyborg, he has flashbacks of the life he used to lead before his life was shattered by a tragedy. With the Flesh Pirates after the cyborg (because apparently they don't want humanity cured) and Van Damme protecting her, it is a constant struggle to get the cyborg to Atlanta.
Van Damme is actually very convincing as the reluctant hero. He has hardly any dialogue in the movie, yet is able to express a range of emotions through expressions and actions (something very good for someone who is always being accused of having no acting ability). The fights are very well choreographed and all of the martial arts you would expect can be found in the movie. Perhaps the best fight is at the end in the rain with Gibson versus Fender. This is pure '80's Van Damme.
Acting - C
Van Damme is surprisingly good as Gibson. Though virtually no dialogue, his actions seem to mean more anyways. As for the rest of the cast, I can't say much. Most of it is either very underplayed or overplayed--no happy medium. But if you wanted a drama you wouldn't be watching this movie anyways, right?
Music/Soundtrack - B
It is basically techno-like music, but interestingly enough, it works quite well in this movie and embarrassingly I have to admit to owning the soundtrack.
Cinematography - C
Very bleak and apocalyptic. There are lots of deserted locales and marshes and warehouses (filmed in Wilmington, NC--as a NC resident, I can tell you that NC does not look anything like that for the most part). The lighting and camera work for the last fight is very good (it is night time and raining).
DVD - C
No real extras. It has the original trailer and some bio information. It does have a widescreen presentation which is nice. The image transfer is average and the sound is average. A basic DVD all around.
Overall - C
If you want action, it has it. If you want drama, skip it. If you want martial arts and to see Van Damme at his best, buy it. This is a cult movie, pure and simple.
- Cyborg is a typical Van Damme movie. All the action you can handle and none of the quality you desire.
You get the typical splits and man-'ttocks sweetness from Van Damme.
Some how Van Damme on foot is faster than a tug boat. Also, open fields in a grass covered savannah-like areas have man-holes and massive labyrinths-like systems below.
You do get an unexpectedly nice mullet on the main villain, as well as some top-notch dialogue.
All in all, if you're forcing yourself to watch the entire Van Damme catalogue, you'll have to watch this one too! Generally shipping is going to be about 25% higher than the price of the movie, so you win on all fronts!
Be a man, give yourself what you deserve, watch Cyborg.
- Post apocalyptic movies always tend to be a mixed bag for several reasons. Since you can build the sets on a low budget it seems just about everyone has tried to make a movie set in a wasteland, and end up making a weak film. So here's another post apocalyptic film that seems to have a look and feel that's a cut above most of them, however it ends up not having much more to offer. It has the good stuff technically, but the script is rather basic, the characters are two dimensional, and there just isn't enough to truly stand out as one of the great wasteland movies.
The premise is interesting enough and it does get the movie started on the right direction. The problem is it doesn't really get any deeper than what you find out in the first 20 minutes or so. All the movie does is have Rickenbacker (Van Damme) run around chasing after the bad guys, getting into fights with them repeatedly. Sure they try to put a sub-plot about Rickenbacker's past and how it ties together with what's going on, and yes it does offer some depth to the story. But ultimately it doesn't do much to really be considered a strong back story. Even more disappointing is the fact the cyborg the movie is named after hardly does a thing at all besides being the hostage everybody wants. Kind of misleading if you ask me.
What gives Cyborg its graces are two things: some of the directing and some of the fight scenes. Jean Claude Van Damme is of course known for his martial arts movies so of course you get some pretty impressive fight scenes. Though none of it would be considered a strong caliber of choreography you still get some decent action. I will give director Albert Pyun some credit for taking what he had and giving it a polished look. Cinematography, camera angles, lighting, they all definitely set Cyborg apart from your standard B-movie type post apocalypse movie and kick it up to A-caliber status on production values alone. Unfortunately the rest of the movie wasn't as well done.
The acting is serviceable and works well enough, but isn't anything to write home about. The main bad guy looks really awesome and intimidating. I was hoping he was a cyborg too just because of the fact he looked so cool and was so amoral. The problem is the character doesn't go anywhere aside from wanting everybody to suffer. This sort of limited character depth hurts the movie's virtues. If they did more with these characters other than have them fight all the time there could have been a better movie coming out of this.
Martial arts fans might like this movie as long as they don't expect merely good fight scenes and not great ones. Van Damme fans will definitely like this one as he does get a chance to play a character different than any other he has done before or since. If you like post apocalyptic movies I supposed it's 50/50 for you. The wasteland concept is there and they establish it, but it doesn't fill you with that atmosphere like The Road Warrior or The Postman. To be honest this is a 50/50 shot for most of you. It really depends on what how good you want a movie before you turn away. Cyborg isn't really bad, but it's borderline weak.
- This was one of Van Damme's earlier movies in his career.
Van Damme is one of the better action heroes in my opinion.
This movies has non stop action, if your a fan of Van Damme
this movie is a must have!!
I rate this movie a 8 from 1to10!!
- Here we go again! Another love it or hate it film. "Cyborg" is notable for a number of reasons. It is a showcase for Van Damme's considerable Martial Arts talent. It shows a world totally devoid of the concept of mercy. Since no one in this film can act their way out of a paper bag, the lack of dialog doesn't hurt it either.
Back before his run-in with Cocaine, Van Damme was trying to tap into the Martial Arts film genre as Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris did. He almost succeeded, were it not for the Coke. Since then, he has been seen in a number of films that only die-hard Martial Arts fans would know, or care about. The last film I saw him in that had very little to nothing of Martial Arts in it was "Legionaire".
"Cyborg" is a tale set in the somewhat near future, where a plague has decimated the Earth's population down to a few scattered camps of humanity. Albert Pyun inserted a bit of unorthodoxy, in the form of character names. Van Damme's moniker is Gibson Rickenbacker, and his nemesis goes by the moniker of Fender Stratocaster, played by Vince Klyn, who's only claim to fame is this film.
A cure has been found by a group of Scientists in an underground bunker. It is worthless, however, unless they can get it to another lab located in Atlanta, Georgia. A woman (Dayle Haddon) who, by all intents and purposes, is another Scientist, volunteers to undergo a transformation to turn her into a "Cyborg", hence, the title of the film. Presumably this is done so she cannot contract the plague, and possibly die before reaching Atlanta.
Gibson Rickenbacker is a loner with a dark past. He plays a "Slinger", or hifalutin' future-talk for mercenary. He meets "Pearl" (the Cyborg), while fighting off "Flesh Pirates" (catchy, huh?). She tells Gibson of her plan to go to Atlanta, but Fender has other ideas. He is the BMOC of the "Flesh Pirates", and He's not diggin' that Gibson or Pearl wants to save the world, so he goes to Atlanta to destroy the cure, and the Scientists with it.
During this period in Hollywood, there was a small contingent of filmmakers who contracted Custom Knifemakers to create some of the most beautiful knives ever seen in film (these were not dime-store specials, but real custom collector pieces). The film "First Blood" started the craze with "Survival Knives", and the trend just took off. You still continue to see them, they're just not the center of attention as they were before. They are all over this film. Every piece you see is a custom creation!
"Cyborg", while far from perfect, is a first-rate Action/Sci-fi/Martial Arts film. Great for a boring afternoon!

- Let me say right off that Jean Claude Van Damne isn't a great actor nor a credible looking fighter. That being said, this is easily his best effort on both fronts.
Here he plays Lyon, a solider in the Foreign Legion who learns that his brother in America was killed in a drug deal gone bad. He left behind an estranged wife and a little girl who is in desperate need. Wanting to help, he escapes the Legion and secretly gives her money through winnings he gets from various illegal underground fights.
Let me say that this story has a lot of heart (no pun intended) for an R rated film. While there is language in it, the family element in the movie is unmistakable. It would ALMOST be apporpriate for family viewing if not for the language as the violence is kept to a minium until the final fight. There is some suggestive sexuality in it but that, also, is kept very brief.
Overall, this is worth a view for older teens to adults. Unless you see it on TV or find an edited version of it, I would not recommended it for young viewers.
That all being said, its one of Van Damne's finest movies.
- I am a big Van Damme fan. I was excited to finally get this widescreen edition. Not only is widescreen not available as described, my old vhs tape has better video quality than this.
For 7 bucks I'll keep it for now and replace it when it (hopefully) comes out on Blu Ray.
- It's unreal how talented Jean Claude Van Damme (JCVD) is at making this type of movie. While incredibly corny, somehow the entertainment value isn't lessened. If it were anyone other than JCVD, I think that the movie would be much worse. It's almost as if his poor acting ability and general monotony makes this type of movie better. JCVD is like epicac; under normal circumstances, it's not a great idea to chug a bottle, but when mixed with the consumption of something sure to turn your stomach otherwise, it's the perfect fit to make everything feel better.
Leone (JCVD) escapes from the French foreign legion in Africa after finding out his broher is ill and being denied leave. What he finds is that his brother is dead and has left a sister-in-law and niece in LA. In little time at all, he realizes that he is worthless in America without cash to help out his relatives. Somehow he makes is way to the underground fight game, where he takes on a guy who appears to be homeless as his trainer. On top of that, it just so happens that this bum is associated with some very high-profile fight fans who stage various elaborate fights for their wealthy friends.
It's classic JCVD, with every punch and kick telegraphed from a mile away, and with an extra scream-pause-flex after each successful blow. In the final battle, Leone must battle a huge man named Atilla, a man clearly thawed after thousands of years of being entrapped in a block of ice while modeling as the one-step-to-the-left guy on the Evolutionary chart. Oh, and I can't say for sure, but I'm fairly sure JCVD does the splits in this one.
Turn your brain off and enjoy some quintessential JCVD!
- Great movie!
If your a Van Damme fan, you've already seen it!
It was the "Fight Club" of the late 90's!
Recommended to all men!
- I thought this was a pretty good movie. Great fight scenes, some corny little emotional moments, but definitely recommended for Van Damme fans!

- I bought this video as a joke. However, the joke was on me when I was forced to watch it with the recipient. Unfortunately, this movie was NOT what I expected it to be. In another aspect, IT WAS WORSE. Not only does the movie steal from other movies, but its choppy, inconsistent in its scenes, and all together BAD. If I was in a movie theater I would have demanded a refund, and some TUMS, for the sour feeling in my stomach.
- its a jean claude van damme movie. it cant be bad.
- For one the movie came out in 1984 and for two its not even a Van Damme movie. He plays a small five minute roll in a gay guy and the whole movie is in French. All though he does throw a few kicks into thin air after grabbing some guys wang. The movie sucks. The thew his picture on the cover and re-released it in 1993 hoping to make a few bucks.
- Any film with Michelle Bauer is worth seeing, and the kick-boxing scene with Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme is interesting.
- Not a great movie but a special item for colletor. That's the first movie of JCVD. For the real fan.

- and past his prime to B-movieland he goes. Van Damme? Ho hum. Now free to embrace the old superheros retirement home along with pals Stallone, Schwarzaneggar & Segall et al, Damme(it)'s cardboard acting (indeed the entire flick) which delivers action that rivals a race between two slugs and character development, envisages twiggy-like thin-ness. Watch this movie as you would drying paint - in anticipation of fini!
- To try and catch an elusive serial killer called The Torch the government creates a full grown clone complete with an ESP gene. Once hatched they handcuff him to a table force him to watch kung-fu movies then just beat the crap out of him day and night until he has the mind set of a killer.
Way too much "serious" acting and not enough groin kicking. The fight scene at the end was cool but that's about it. Ringo Lam can do much better: FULL CONTACT, PRISON ON FIRE 1 & 2, IN HELL.
The one bright spot was Michael Rooker's extreme overacting.
- REPLICANT as indicated in the Amazon review is a surprisingly good movie. Jean Claude van Damme gives one of his most convincing performances in two roles: a slimy serial killer called the Torch who has been murdering mothers and their babies, and as his genetic double, a kind of childlike replicant. The clone was done in order to try and retrace the movements of the real Torch, but also as a governmental experiment to initiate further plans for the future. Van Damme is repulsive as the Torch and quite convincing as the new Torch, who is put under the care of former cop, now secret service agent Michael Rooker. Rooker gives a compelling performance and the relationship that develops between he and the genetic double is well developed. Ringo Lam directs with a sure eye and the action scenes are well executed. A very surprising entry for van Damme and a good actioner overall.
- Absolutely amazing. I mean, the guy had been written off for so long, I really didn't have many expectations for this movie, but it was a surprise and a half. The GOOD kind, too.
Ringo Lam also directed the tepid Van Damme film "Maximum Risk", but at least the fight scenes showed panache. You'll find this film mirrors "The Sixth Day" (if for no other reason but that Michael Rooker stars in both), and actually beats it for sheer watchability.
It's a lot of fun to see Van Damme brutalize any innocent bystander that gets in his way; he must have had a ball with that role. On the other hand, watching him perfect his 'Rain Man' side added a touch of pathos and humour as well--I think this movie represents his best acting yet, and believe me, that is saying a lot.
Some of the deleted scenes should have been left in for further character development, but overall, it's a tight, well-paced thriller/action film that really deserved a theatre release. Absolutely recommended.
- Replicant is probably the most complete Van Damme movie made. It has everything from an enjoyable and well paced plot, solid characters with pretty good acting, and wonderful action scenes.
This is not the first movie to have 2 Van Damme main characters. Double Impact was actually the first, but unlike that film, the two in Replicant are actually much more different and are pretty much enemies for the most part. The first Van Damme character we are introudced to is the villain, and Van Damme actually does a really good job fullfilling this role. The villain is not your typical bad guy - this guy is just dirty and has issues. He is obsessed with not only killing, but burning all the "bad" mothers he comes in contact with, in return for his own mistreated youth. It seems like nothing can stop this guy in the film, and he rarely gives a care about who gets in the way. He has no trouble killing others and putting plenty in harms way.
The other Van Damme character is a clone created in a government program, that hopes clones can successfully sense their real life counterparts, and lead the cops to the villain. At first, the clone goes through some training and has a difficult time adjusting to life, but eventually learns. He finally comes in contact with his villain counterpart, in a series of either rough fights or attempts to join sides with his real life self.
The other notable character in the film is Jake (Michael Rooker) who has been hunting down the suspect for a long time, and with still no success, decides to retire. The villain still wants him dead, and thats when Jake is asked to work with the clone in the new program to help find the murderer once and for all. There are definetly some emotional moments between himself and the clone - moments of frustration, humor, carelessness, and eventually some bonding.
As for action, the scenes are well placed throughout the plot of the movie. All the action never dissapoints, and the fights are very hardcore - from bodies flying, to objects breaking in every scene, each fight is a brutal one. The finale of the movie has the greatest action of all, and mainly involves an intense ambulance driving scene in a parking garage, where Jake is trying to stop the murderer from escaping. There is also plenty of fight action too.
This is one of Van Damme's better movies, and best performances, playing two very different roles well. The movie works well altogther, and is enjoyable in more areas that just the action department. Perhaps one of the last of the great Van Damme movies made is this one. You won't be dissapointed.
