- I haven't read all the reviews for this film so I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this stuff, but...
The producers, etc. didn't get what made Jackie successful in Hong Kong and rather than make a "Jackie Chan" film and inviting his input, they tried to make him 'fit' Hollywood and made a typical cop flick starring Chan. The film works for what it was, but falls short of what a true Jackie Chan film can be.
The reviewer for Amazon apparently missed the point of the naked women processing the drugs stating their nakedness was "inexplicable". Although not stated in the movie (perhaps the reason why he didn't get it?) the women are nude to prevent them from stealing from the drug dealers by hiding some in their clothing (obviously they do have one or two places they could hide it, but we won't get into that).
Obviously this isn't Jackie's finest hour, but taken for what it is, overall not a bad film. Danny Aiello is a riot.
- If you want UNCUT ORIGINAL version, ALWAYS look for ORIGINAL LICENSED Production. NOT US Release. Its a foreign film, it should not be US version to begin with~! HELLO!!!?? Why settle for LESS with US Version where they edit and cut so many excellent scenes especially with Jackie's Fighting Scenes. And US Release ruins the speed and sound as well. I have been collecting Jackie Chan's movies both HK and US Release Version for quite some time now. I found HK Version to be MUCH MORE in enjoyable, and HIGHER in Quality. American Market always like to "Americanize" and "Control". Regional Code Regulation thing is one of the example to CONTROL the Market. Why not let everyone enjoy the same HK Original Release move the same way ENTIRE WORLD enjoys it ?? No one makes Hollywood American movies to "French version" or "Chinese Version" ~! This what Americans are doing~! Well, enjoy the cheap "American version" then~! LOL
- Last Tuesday night I was watching The Protector DVD and I felt not enjoy and disappointed of The Protector is very bad film (HK version and USA verison) because it's too much nude scenes, too much swear, too much violence, poor story, poor peformances and Jackie Chan was difficult actor in The Protector film.
I am warning you that The Protector is not family/children movie and The Protector is adult film. My advice to you about please do not buy it and if you do really wanting watch it, better wait see on TV or rent DVD shop.
My favourite Jackie Chan's cop films is called Police Story trilogy, New Police Story, Rush Hour 1 & 2, The Medallion are brilliant films because it's excellent comedy, martial art action scenes, kung fu, excellent story, excellent performances, excellent Jackie Chan actor, it can for family/children movie.
- Exciting film from start to finish. Early Chan U.S. movie ( his first or second ).Remember when Statue of Liberty was being renavated ?
- Since when has it ever been written that Jackie Chan can't have nudity, profanity, and less comical fight scenes in one of his movies? NEVER!
I don't understand all of the fuss over the above mentioned things being in this movie. I don't recall it being produced by Disney! As far as the storyline goes, since when has a Jackie Chan storyline ever been nominated for an Oscar? NEVER!
Okay, now that I have got that off my chest, I shall continue with the review.
This movie, which was made in the 80's, is Jackie Chan's first "American" made film and it really isn't a bad one at all. Sure there are some holes in the plot and some, rather absurd scenes in the movie, but it is still a pretty good buddy-action movie featuring Jackie Chan, Danny Aiello, and my favorite, Bill "Superfoot" Wallace as the right hand man to the movies main villain.
The basic premise of the movie is that Jackie Chan is a New York City cop who is involved in a shooting where his partner is shot and killed and he goes rogue in order to get the man who killed his partner. This puts him in hot water with his boss (of course), and he ends up getting stuck on a "crap assignment" in which he and Aiello end up being witnesses to a kidnapping.
They end up getting assigned to the case and travel to Hong Kong where they run into a massage parlor full of beautiful naked women that end up trying to kill them, which is just one of many adventures they go through in their pursuit of the kidnappers. As the story unfolds, you end up finding out that there is a lot more going on than just a simple kidnapping.
The story progresses to the inevitable showdown at the end of the movie between Jackie Chan and Bill "Superfoot" Wallace. The fight scenes, while not extraordinary by any means, are actually pretty entertaining and fun to watch. Although one must remember that you are not going to see the kind of fight scenes that are typical of a Jackie Chan movie in this film, but they are fairly enjoyable nonetheless.

- "Half a Loaf of Kung Fu" is probably one of my favorites out of Jackie Chan's earlier movies. There are several funny fight scenes, and the actual Kung Fu is pretty decent. The movie is not at all serious as it is poking fun at movies in the genre that came out around the same time. I would definitely recommend this movie to any fan of Jackie Chan.
- Jackie Chan stars in the first kung fu parody ever. The film was very witty, and had some good fights.
Jackie plays a happy-go-lucky wanderer, who is hopeless at kung fu. When he is employed by a group of people to help them protect the 'Emerald Jades' and 'Soul Pills', Jackie calls on a kung fu master to help him. I quite enjoyed this film, and I think you problbly will to.

- Frustrated by the weak box office returns of New Fist of Fury and Shaolin Wooden Men, Lo Wei gave Jackie Chan creative control over the slapstick comedy Half a Loaf of Kung Fu. With Chan's friend Chen Chi-hwa as director (Snake and Crane Arts of Shaolin), Jackie wanted to make a film that was the antithesis of the current martial art dramas that were being shown. Jackie called this movie a "ninety-minute-long practical joke," but Lo failed to find the humor and decided to vault this film and created his own comedy for Jackie the insipid Spiritual Kung Fu. Half a Loaf of Kung Fu would remain unwatched until 1980.
One of the most interesting segments of the film is the beginning which parodies the normal use (at that time) of the main actors showcasing their martial-art ability. He spoofs the Zatochi series, he tries to catch arrows but fails and there is a great scene that has him using a fighting dummy for practice only the have the camera pan away to reveal a mini dummy. Unfortunately, the rest of the film is not as inventive as the starting sequence, though there are many good scenes. The problem is that the plot is not that different from many other films that Lo Wei has done.
Jackie plays Gon Tou, a wandering hungry man in search of a job. He eventually gets a housekeeper position for Mr. Man who houses the witch Lady Mui. He spies on her while she was doing a poison experiment, inadvertently gets his new friend San killed and narrowly flees. After his escape he came across a fight between Se Tai Chung and Lao Yung Lung - the man with the whip. This battle resulted in the death of both and Gon assumed the identity of Master Lao to collect the bounty on Chung. Now Gon is mistaken for a man with fighting skills even though his combatant acumen is very small. He gets beat up quite a bit.
He stumbles across a flatulent beggar (Dean Shek) who teaches Jackie such moves as "Lady Draws Arrow" and the ever impressive "One Finger Stops Mountain" (guess which finger.) Dean is funny in this Cantonese comedic role. Gon is then helped by another beggar (Lee Man Tai) who prevents Lady Mui from killing him. At first the beggar does not want to help Gon anymore, but he acquiesces and will help him if he takes something to Fong Wan. He later meets him at Fung Yu's Stone House with his daughter (Doris Lung) and friend (James Tien.) Together they are protecting the "Thousand Year Jake", which cures any poison, and "Potion of new Life" which is the fountain of youth. Since these are so powerful and priceless many criminals such as Lady Mui, Iron Hand Lui and The Man of a Thousand Faces (Kam Kong) want these. Gon helps Fong while learning more and more Kung Fu.
The plot is a bit chaotic and it ultimately fails as a spoof because so many martial art films have had plots much more ridiculous then this movie. But, it is an important film in Jackie's career because it is a turn from the grim-faced stoic hero that Lo wanted him to be. It is also a funny film with many inventive, though sometimes broad, scenes such as a dream sequence with Jackie becoming Popeye or Jackie reading a manual while fighting. It is also hilarious when Jackie knows that the flatulent beggar is approaching before we even see him. There is also a great reference to Bruce Lee when Jackie uses a wig as nunchucks while making Bruce-like sounds.
The fighting of the film is much more traditional, with the exception of the nunchuck wig, than Jackie's later films. But there are some good shots, especially the ten-minute ending fight scene. There is also a nice teaming of Dean and Jackie towards the end that was fun to watch. Overall, I like the film. It was better than the early Jackie Chan movies, though not as good as his later films. If you are a Jackie Chan film and have not seen it, then there is a good chance you will like it -- as long as you like flatulent beggars and goofy plots.
- Great action and comedy mixed together in this classic Jackie Chan movie!

- I agree with the previous review, and I beg you not to waste your time and money with this movie. The fight scenes are poorly choreographed and the storyline is hokey (but not in the traditional Chan way).
PLEASE DO NOT BUY ME! Zakarius
- WOW! What a strange movie for a "Jacky Chan" flic. He ISN'T the main charachter! There's everything a buff could want, though, from a supporting role; including strong plot, awesome fight sequences, and cool cinematography. Needless to say, the end fight scene is excellent. Even has funny dubbed voices. This one is on FILM, folks :) Chan looks barely 25. Excellent movie!
- My uncle lended this movie to me, and I didn't know that Jackie Chan didn't have the Main Role! And he also played the role of Caesar? C'mon, guys. This film is made in 1973, the time when Bruce Lee made "Enter The Dragon". It also had Ho Lee Yan (Who played the "Old Man" in ETD) who played the Uncle of the family which the 2 heroes lived with. This Chinese resistance family had to deal with the Japs just as they were the Syndicate! But the bad news...is that Caesar (Chan) bleeds to death BIG TIME by the Jap henchmen. And the way the Japs killed the remaining resistance fighters before the main hero comes to save them was too gory, talk about a child being thrown to the boulder HEAD FIRST! UGH! Don't buy this movie if it's too bloody for you.
- This early supporting role by Jackie Chan will leave you wondering how he ever got another. In this he plays a resistance fighter during WW2 against the eeeeeeeeeevil Japanese, and his acting is so bad that you're almost relieved when the Japs finally kill him near the end, in one of the goriest death scenes ever. This film is relentlessly grim and gruesome, not even worth the price of a rental unless you're a crazed, masochistic fan who just can't get enough Jackie.
- aka: "Not Scared to Die"
The only thing to understand about this early 70's movie is that it was very early in Jackie's career (he looks like he was about 20) and that he has a 'very' minor role. The lead star is actually a guy named Wang Ching, an old Shaw veteran who typically played villain roles (he's recognizable by his gap teeth), which is part of this movie's novel appeal for me. The story is about a chinese opera troup who get brutalized by some (typically evil) Japanese soldiers - actually the soldiers are brutalizing everyone and Wang steps in. The fights are particularly bloody and the tone of this movie is quite heavy (more than usual - hong kong and the mainland would eventually turn to making kung-fu comedies), but it grows on you. Those tender souls hoping for some of Jackie's peek-a-boo boxing and light-heartedness had better role on and huddle up with their copies of Rush Hour, because this is not the movie to get for all of those antics! If you like old-skool, or are a Chan die-hard, or just curious, this movie is worth checking out. I just wish I knew who played the two main villains! -hc

- Surprisingly good effort of mixing secret
agents, fung fu and comedy together with
very good results. Look for bad guy from
'The Patriot' in here as well as foil.
Hewitt sure has grown up! Wow! No more
too 'cute girl next door', like in Party
of Five!
- Quirky, funny and light-hearted! Jackie Chan has wonderful humor in this movie where he plays a chauffer who turns into a secret agent to help catch the bad guy while his boss is in the hospital! Lots of funny high tech gadgets are used in this movie, kind of like the ones you'd expect in a 007 movie!
The drawbacks in this movies is the annoying character Jennifer Love Hewitt plays..... part of the interactions she has with Jackie Chan's character are funny and the other parts are not.
The villian and how he plans to conquer the world is very hokey and phony! Plus how Chan's and Hewitt's characters attempt to capture the villian is a little silly.
Otherwise you have a great movie!
- It's one of the bad movies starring Jackie Chan. It's not funny. The fighting scenes are below par compared to other films of Jackie.
- Jackie Chan Movies have a certain flair but usually are only fair movies but this one is a terrific movie with a good plot and Jennifer Love Hewitt plays a great sidekick for Chan. Lots of humor and nifty action gets rolling in this film .Chan becomes a super hero in the Tuxedo and watching him use it is hilarious . Don't walk and instead run and get this one for a lot of fun maybe on a Saturday night.
- When you are in the mood for a silly movie, this is it! Jackie Chan always manages to make fun out of every situation. Do not take it serious. It is not an action thriller, or a serious movie, It is a fun movie, just go for the ride!

- If there is anyone out there who hasn't seen this movie and wants to, be warned: Spiritual Kung Fu is NOT a flick that should be taken seriously. If however, you are one who likes DUMB humor as one reviwer put it, then you may actually enjoy this. As for me, I have seen some good Jackie Chan action comedies (Rush Hour, Mr. Nice Guy) but this one tops the charts on the level of pathetic.
- This is one of my most memorable Jackie Chan movie which I saw it for the very first time when I was 12 years old, it was 1980 in Japan. Jackie Chan popularity was booming back then, and he made many TV show appearance in Japan. Now almost 25 years later in my life, I finally get to see this film again, here in the USA. The movie was better when I saw it as a child in the past. I suppose I have been spoiled by big money making movie productions such as by Hollywood. I wanted more, and better quality in sound and picture. I wanted it to be a wide screen. I wanted this and that comparing to American movies. But after all, this is a "Classic Chinese movie with a low budget film." The MAGIC of this movie is not so much in quality, but in ACTION, and UNDERSTANDING of culture, APPRECIATION of the art, and the one must have a good sense of IMAGINATION skill. LOT OF Kung-Fu movies require such senses to fully appreciate the movie. After all it is a movie. The movie such as TUXEDO, or THE ONE by Jet Li are so ruined by putting too much money into it in the production, becoming very much like Hollywood movies. Fake, and superficial. Sad to see. This movie will always remain as one of my Jackie Chan's prime time BEST classics.
- I said what the heck and rented this movie because I like kung fu movies. well This movie had a good story line like most old school kung fu movies. And great fight scenes. Also I like that jackie chan emphasized less comedy in this movie and foucuses on kung fu unlike now. The only draw back is that its old, poor quality , and the special effects are ridiculous or it would have gotten 5 stars.
- I love this film!!! Excellent!!! Maybe some of you want to watch a kung fu film to see nothing but pointless fight scenes, but I for one like to see some other things in my kung fu flicks. Styles for one, check. A little kung fu humor, check. A little more developed plot then just the regular ol' "you killed my family member now i must get revenge", check. This film is extremely well done and I recommend it to anyone who considers themselves to be a Jackie Chan fan. This is a must have!!!
- I watched this movie with my sons (ages 9 and 7) and could only handle about 30 minutes of it because it was just so hokey, but my boys really enjoyed it, and had fun making up their own Shaolin moves for the rest of the night. They called me back in for the fight scenes later in the movie, and those are certainly worth watching because they are not bloody messes but are instead really intricately choreographed displays of martial arts technique. One other thing worth noting: it seemed as though the camera had zoomed in too far because it cut out important parts of the scenes. I didn't see an option to change it from full screen to wide screen, but if there is a way to do that, it would make a big difference.
