  1. Three great Chan flicks that never made a US theatrical release, which means they lack Jackie Chan doing his own dubbing, which is prob the only thing thats not so grand, except for WHO AM I?, which was released on HBO and does include Chan's own voice.

WHO AM I? - Chan goes for a little bit of drama, though I found the Tribe stuff in the beginning a bit weird, this movie has some great scenes, including chan's run through the city in Swedish wooden shoes, a tight car chase, Jackie sliding down a HUGE building, and an awesome roof top fight against two martial artists that certainly Give chan the fight of his life.

Gorgeous- Jackie's Romantic movie, I found alot of the romance to be a bit cheesy, and the main girl is pretty much a bubble head and her motivations for leaving home seem really odd. Jackie is great as the lonely millionaire who has digital fish (heehe) and has only two fight scenes (no stunts) with this really cool australian guy, definetly worth a watch, but not Jackies best in terms of what his fans are use too.

Miracles- I dunno if this DVD comes with the original language cut or not, so I'll stick to the film. This movie was heart warming, chan is so charming as the out of place Mob boss who wants to do something nice for this woman who wants to impress her daughter. It has some great action scenes, including one at the end in a string factory (whats with jackie and factories? lol)

All three are worth getting if you're a Chan fan, a great collection, at a great price.

  1. this is a good look at the precursor to that kind of humor. You can see how it influences such movies and has some smart writing (even if its sometimes predictable... you must remember it was a new style at the time). Overall its a fun movie with one great scene (clue: have you ever wanted to be invisible)

  2. Jackie Chan, Jackie Chan, Jackie Chan... You Bak Guis didn't get it, did you? This was a Sammo Hung movie and if you were brought up in the 60's, 70's and 80's with the genre you would know that not all Chinese movies are about Jackie Chan, Jackie Chan, Jackie Chan... I am a Jackie Chan fan but I can open my mind to other types of these movies and enjoy the heck out of them.
This movie paid tribute to many of the kung fu fighting movies by making a farce of the fighting. Did you guys hear the tribute to Wong Fei Hung. Oh, sorry... Who's Wong Fei Hung?
Pick it up, sit down, shut up and enjoy the ride. You'll love this movie.

  3. I don't have alot to say but this movie is funny, and you will have smile face when you watch it.

  4. The movie starts off with these 5 convicts going to jail. They become friends and go live at one of the convicts uncle's house and try to make it on the outside world.

There is not really much action and that is why I watched it. but the comedy was pretty good. It does have one hilarious sequence where one of the guys is reading a book on invisibility. When the other 4 find out they trick him into thinking he really is invisible. Sammo was at his best in scenes like these, but this movie didn't have enough of them.

Now Jackie Chan is in this but he only appears in a few scenes and you will not see him for 30-40 minutes at a time Then when he does show up he will just be walikgn down the street and run into Yuen Biao and get into a fight. This fight was only 30 seconds long but was awesome! Jackie is a cop in this and he really should have been in the film a little bit more.

So the group of convicts pisses off James Tien and his gang and they have one spectacular fight. Sammo has a flyign backwards jump kick that has to be seen to be believed.

So this movie has like 7 action sequences but 1 or maybe 2 that really deliver.

Also check this out to see Jackie Chan as the Tony Hawk of roller skating. And with a comment like that I feel the need to tell you that this movie is much better than Jackie's 'The BIg Brawl'.

  5. Winners and Sinners (aka Five Lucky Stars) is a film that I liked better the second time I watched it. After shaken off all expectations of a "Jackie and Sammo" film and accepted the uneven and scattered nature of this ensemble movie I enjoyed it more. This movie was more important though when it came out then it is considered today. Jackie had a recent flop in Dragon Lord, though I did enjoy the movie, and Golden Harvest had been in a bit of a slump. Producer Leonard Ho got the idea from Cannonball Run (which Jackie Chan and Michael Hui had parts in) to create an assemblage of popular Hong Kong stars to star in this film. Winners and Sinners was a success spawning several sequels and reunited Jackie with Seven Little Fortune alums Sammo and Yuen Biao (who helped with martial art choreography; though his cameo as a fellow CID officer is less than a minute as a quick fight versus Jackie.)

The Five Lucky Stars are cons who after spending their time in jail take a straight job with a cleaning company led by Curly aka Jack So (played by real life democracy advocate John Shum) who was framed for instigating a crowd to do harm in a parody of his real-life exhorts. The other four are Ranks aka Larry (Stanley Fung), Teapot (Sammo Hung who also directed this) as a cat burglar, Vaseline (Charlie Chin) a slick thief, and Exhaust Pipe (Richard Ng who performance was nominated as Best Actor for the Hong Kong Film Awards) who is bad at thieving automobile parts. They all live with Jack's sister known as Sis (Cherie Chung.) Unfortunately they spend way too much time trying to get her attention, leaving a lull in the early parts of the film. However there are some great gags such as Richard Ng thinking he is invisible with Wu Ma's great response to shatter his misconception - "...pretty good vision even when it comes to small objects" and a blind couple playing a Rod Stewart song at a carnival.

There are some great stunt and fight scenes led by 7086 (Jackie Chan) a bumbling CID officer who beats up wrong suspects, kills his superior's turtle and accidentally throws a kid's ice cream away. When he is not destroying everything in his path he is part of an awesome stunt scene involving skates (at least he learned something good from The Big Brawl though he is doubled on some of the trickier roller tricks) and part of a good fight scene in a cafeteria with a little person with horrific teeth. The "ouch factor" is quite high in one scene where a villain gets kicked out of a window and lands on a concrete ledge than falls to the ground. I have the highest respect for these stuntmen who kill themselves for our enjoyment. This film definitely deserved the Hong Kong award for best Action Choreography.

The story is mostly non-existent until the boilerplate briefcase full of counterfeit bills makes it's appearance. It belongs to Chan Chiu (James Tien always good as a cigar chomping villain) who is head of a triad gang. He was going to trade it to another triad gang led by Ho Man but it got intercepted and eventually and unknowingly in the possession of the Five Lucky Stars Cleaning Company. Of course, Agent 7086 wants this briefcase too.

But this film was not made for the plot. It was made to be a crowd pleasing mixture of comedy and action, both of which it does very well. It parodies the more serious films with scenes such as Charlie Chin and Fung Hark On doing a martial art pose-down fight and the final action scene that blends comedy and stunts takes place in a warehouse which gets me thinking on how many films I have seen that have the last fight scene in a warehouse (rhetorical thought of course). There are some problems with the film besides the inert beginning including he abysmal electronic soundtrack that is eerily reminiscent of Heart of Dragon's soundtrack and the misuse of Lam Ching Ying as Chan's butler Chan. Overall this is an enjoyable film that is fun to watch that showcases several outstanding Hong Kong comedians and several outstanding action performers.

  1. burt and friends are back again, and i want to know why! i was given these two movies by a coworker andwhile i thank him for the gift,i don't have the heart to tell him what a piece of junk these two movies are.
the "PLOT" such as it is,burt and friends drive fast, fight, drink, drive fast somemore, wreck some cars, and thats it! the race comes at the end as a cartoon, i kid you not. the much talked about frank santara scenes were shot withy frank only and then cut into the movie, and it shows badly.
not one laugh or even chuckle to be found in this mess.the large list of "guest stars" looks great till you notice that these same stars were on love boat every other week till it was droped from the line up.
movies like this is what sent burt into a tailspin in the 80's.

  2. If you loved the first Cannonball then you'll love the second; in fact if you liked the "Smokey and the Bandit" movies then you like "Cannonball."

In my humble opinion, this is a good movie, not a great movie. One that you can watch over and over again, but won't neccessarly be your first choice when picking one out.

If you're a fan or this era of movie or Burt Reynolds then you should get this movie.

  3. Justly forgotten, "Cannonball Run II" (1984) is a glorified home movie that displays its all-star cast in a spectacularly poor light. Production values are nonexistent and the anticipated Rat Pack reunion (with Frank Sinatra barely showing up) falls woefully flat. After sinking to the depths of "Stroker Ace," Burt Reynolds and director Hal Needham end their screen partnership on a truly wretched note.

  4. I echo the most recent review before this one--one of the worst movies ever made! Unlike the previous reviewer, I in fact love the first Cannonball Run movie. Sure, not the one of the greatest movies ever, but at least the first Cannonball was funny and had a certain charm to it. The sequel? Gag! Not funny at all, the writing is horrible, the scenes are haphazard and disonnected--an umitigated disaster. An amazing lineup of actors, but I'm sure most of them will hang their head in shame when anyone reminds them that they were a part of this movie. Some of the lesser-level actors whose acting ability was never stellar turn in some of the worst acting ever in this movie. Even the bloopers during the end credits aren't funny, although in the first movie they were. The first movie end credits' bloopers gave me the impression that the stars of the first Cannonball had a blast making the first movie, but I'm sure they were embarassed about the sequel. NOT RECOMMENDED.

  5. I actually liked the first Cannonball Run - it was trashy but fun. This movie is no fun.

5 comments about Shanghai Noon (Bonus Edition).
  1. Jackie says he'd had the idea for this movie for years. I think it wasn't until he came to the US that he could do it justice. Yeah, Jackie's biggest fans usually prefer his Hong Kong films, but you gotta admit that this is a movie that would've been hard to make in Asia.

Jackie's sidekick in Shanghai Noon is a great comedian. He has a look and a voice quality that is very unique. Perfect casting for the part. The jail house scene between the two is priceless.

I also really like the music right from the beginning. The music sets the mood and really supports the action.

The settings are also quite interesting. The Forbidden City scenes, though brief are really cool (I'd like to know where they really filmed that), and the outdoor mountain scenes are inspiring.

    Two thumbs up!

  2. The DVD was a gift for my sister and the first DVD sent to her was defective. Half way through playing, it stopped and went back to the beginning. I contacted Amazon and the DVD was replaced free of charge. I was very very pleased with how the whole thing was handled. Amazon even reimbursed me for the shipping I paid to return the first DVD. The second DVD plays fine and my sister is very pleased. Thank You Again

  3. Funny with great action scenes. I know its weird to slash this but they get into a tub naked together, how could I not?! ^_^; Not many fics but their good.

    -ksha2222

  4. Very fast service. I order the movie 4 days before my daughter's birthday, and got it well in advance. I was pleasantly surprised. And, of course, she loves the movie.

  5. For some reason, I had an image of a really cheesy, cornball movie that was so-so. But I may have been thinking of Wild Wild West and/or Blazing Saddles.

I love Jackie Chan movies. This one doesn't disappoint! It's full of great action scenes, several doses of humor, and lots of Jackie goodness!

I liked it considerably more than The Medallion, which I watched a couple nights ago (at least decent fare in its own right). Now I really want to see Shanghai Knights and see if it's as good as the original.

I'd certainly rate this a "buy" if you're into Jackie, and maybe even if you're not. Good art direction, costuming, etc. Well choreographed fights. Etc. Good stuff!

5 comments about Battle Creek Brawl (aka ""The Big Brawl"").
  1. That's what I knew it as... but it's the same movie. It's awesome! Thanks so much for prompt delivery! In great condition :-)

  2. Jackie Chan's first American venture was the result of Golden Harvest keeping Jackie out of harm's way and to try to push Jackie internationally. When Chan broke contract with Lo Wei for Golden Harvest and five million HK dollars, Lo wanted to do everything he could to get Jackie back (or punish him) even deal with the Triad group Sun Yi On to do this. Jimmy Wang Yu, whom Jackie worked with in The Killer Meteors and had Triad influence, offered to broker a deal between the three parties. He would later require a few favors such as Jackie to appear in Island of Fire and Fantasy Mission Force. Jimmy was quite successful in his talks with the three parties early in Jackie's foreign journey, but Jackie would have to appear in two American films: star in The Big Brawl and have a small part in the horrific Cannonball Run while running the emotional gamut known as the American Press.

Battle Creek Brawl aka The Big Brawl is a mediocre attempt at trying to showcase Jackie's skills. While it is not as bad as the American version of his second attempt - The Protector - it was still only an OK film. It was directed by Robert Clouse (Enter the Dragon and the craptacular Game of Death) but he was relegated to B-movie fare at this point in his career though he would later direct Gymkata. Clouse's static style conflicted with the dynamic nature of Jackie. Though there were several other areas of annoyance for Chan including his working with a language that he did not understand at the time and a stunt coordinator who did not understand his style.

Jackie stars as Jerry Kwan, a prodigal martial art student studying under his uncle Herbert Kwan (played by the prolific Japanese actor Mako) in the late 20's or early 30's Chicago. Herbert is a chiropractor when he is not torturing Jackie or going after large women. He is a disappointment to his father, even when he breaks up extortionists of his father's restaurant, who wants him to be more like his brother Robert, the Doctor. Jerry's fighting ability gets the attention of Dominichi (Jose Ferrer) a local gangster and obtains the ire of his nephew David Leggetti. Dominichi needs a fighter to be able to beat his nemesis, Mr. Morgan, who has control of a beast of a man Billy Kiss who kisses his opponents, sometimes a bit long, after he wins (played by H.B. Haggerty who looks like a 19th century circus strong man.)

For Dominichi to control Jerry he kidnaps his brother's soon-to-be fiancé from China named Mae (Rosalind Chao who is forever known by Trekkers as Keiko O'Brien.) He then enters Jerry in a fighting contest called the Battle Creek Brawl which takes place in Texas. The purse is 15,000 dollars (which seems ridiculously low now.) The biggest problem with this contest is that all the fighters resemble professional wrestlers (yes the great Gene Le Bell is amongst them) and not fighters. This is especially evident in the beginning brawl-for-all where there is a camel clutch, body slams and plenty of large men in tights. The fighters are incredibly slow compared to Jackie, but they do add certain campyness to the film (or do the capes and tights make this point already evident.)

One of the more interesting scenes took place earlier in the film when Jackie is part of a relay roller derby contest. He would also use this new found skill of roller skating in an awesome stunt sequence in Winners and Sinners. But the rest of the film never quite captures my interest the way that scene does. The romance between Jerry and Nancy was handled in an interesting nonchalant manner though. I also did like some of the fight scenes, but not as much as most of Jackie's Hong Kong fight scenes. I am glad that he was able to add humor to several parts of the film. I would not recommend this film to most people, because there are so many better "Jackie" films to watch. I did find this a nice diversion and not as bad as many of the American fight films of that era. NOTES: stunt coordinator Pat E. Johnson has his name on the fighter's tournament chalk board. Some versions (especially early Hong Kong prints) of this film take out the relationship scenes between Nancy and Jerry.

  3. This, "The Protector", and "Jackie Chan's Police Force" were the first Jackie Chan films I saw as a kid. Granted the other two were better films (especially "Police Force"), but I really liked the humor in the film. The story was good and Jackie was funny as always and Mako (his uncle) was funny too. The action was toned down quite a bit for a Jackie chan movie not as fast paced or as hard hitting, but over all it was enjoyable. Just remember this was one of his first movies here.

  4. this is a renamed movie. the original name was "The Big Brawl" this is the first Jackie Chan movie made with an American production team. the story is different and the premise is interesting. this has been a favorite Jackie Chan movie for me but it has always been had to find. i was very happy to see finally available in dvd. even with the name change.

  5. I saw this w/"enter the dragon" in the theater yrs ago and "Brawl" was just as good, today I'd say it is better because of its originality. There are no other big budget movies featuring wrestlers, roller skating, gangsters, comedy and kung fu all in one movie especially taking place in the 1940's. No speeding up the film for the fights here(unlike jackie's hong kong films), still Chan is very fast and outmaneuvering everyone including some monster sized wrestlers. Mako and Chan keep the laughs coming during their training scenes but it's not all comedy when gangsters betting against him in the brawl kidnap his uncle and want him to take a "dive", but when the tables turn, Lalo schifrin's music kicks in and the suspense takes your breath away while chan goes for some payback. Disc picture, audio is decent, not great but it should be coming from fox. Robert Clouse shows he really was a competent director with this and others(ultimate warrior, darker than amber) after raising eyebrows with two "so bad its good" jim kelly goof-ups.

  1. Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan are great in the movie. It will keep you laughing all the way through the movie.

  2. The original "Rush Hour" remains one of my favorite movies of all time. Jackie and Chris have great on screen chemistry, and the fights are absolutely classic. The film also has fantastic stunts, a wonderful plot, and a great score by Lalo Schifrin. If you love Jackie, and want to see one of his best american films, look no further.
"War, huh. What is it good for, absolutely no-thing!"

  3. this is a pretty good movie.it's an action adventure comedy.there is a
lot of action and the movie is fast paced.there isn't a lot of
    comedy,but comedy bits there are,are pretty funny.Jackie Chan's
acrobatic, over the top cartoonish martial arts moves are funny.Chris
Tucker's motor mouth character is pretty funny at times.also the
teaming of Chan and Tucker is a great idea.they work well off each
other.one could not be more opposite from the other.i liked their back
and forth banter.the other thing i like about this movie is that even
though there is some violence,it's not excessive, and there is a bit of
    coarse language,but not very much.for me,Rush Hour is a 3.5/5

  4. I love this movie, and ever since I last saw it in VHS I wanted to have it in a better quality. This was the right choice. I really like it, and I can't stop having fun every time I see it. I don't get tired of it. For me, it's a classic movie with lots of action and lots of fun.

I really recommend this movie for any Jackie fan!

  5. Rush Hour is one of those movies I could watch over and over again and enjoy it each and every single time. The chemistry between Chan and Tucker is superb (Lethal Weapon-quality) and even though the plot is a bit trite, the overall movement and fun of the film keeps it going. An easy 5 stars for me.

  1. I've found from another source that this 3 DVD pack contains the following 9 films -

KUNG FU - THE INVISIBLE FIST: Chen Sing demonstrates his considerable martial arts prowess in this early 1970s kung fu classic.

CHALLENGE OF THE MASTERS: When the son of a kung fu master proves himself in a competition, he receives a new tutor as his prize. The youth's new association leads him to do battle to avenge a friend's death and protect his family honor.

JACKIE CHAN AND THE 36 CRAZY FISTS: When an orphan boy is rejected by kung-fu masters at a monastery, he is taken in by a beggar and a wiseman who teach him the martial arts. Now he's out for revenge on those who killed his father--and on those who abandoned him.

DEADLY KICK: When a band of thieves steals a treasure map, they have to avoid the clutches of police in this kung fu film from director Ma Wu.

KUNG FU FEVER: Dragon Lee stars in this film about the theft of Bruce Lee's kung fu manual.

FIST OF FEAR, TOUCH OF DEATH: Three masters of martial arts put on a violent performance in this electrifying karate film starring the one and only Bruce Lee.

CHAMP AGAINST CHAMP: Martial arts action unfolds when Lee Wen (Dragon Lee) seeks vengeance after losing his leg by a poisonous dart during a fierce battle with his archenemy Master Kai and his men. With some help from an ancient manual, Lee creates an artificial leg made of steel and begins to train for the dangerous task. Once he masters the Eighteen Kicks with the new leg, Lee seeks out Kai's deadly gang, which includes fire breathing man and invisible ninja girls!

BLOODFIGHT: The "Beast From the East"-- Bolo Yeung, that is--fights in a no-holds-barred, underground martial arts tournament where the winner might be the only one left alive.

FIGHTING ACE: A young orphan (John Liu) out to revenge the killing of his father and rape and murder of his mother must learn the death techniques from the finest kung-fu Masters. A must see for all martial arts enthusiasts.

Hope this helps with your buying choices.
