  1. You can read the other reviews of this film. I have nothing to add, but wanted to cast my vote for terrible. Wish I had read them before renting.

  2. I have to say the DVD cover lured me in. The design is great, although there are no killer scarecrows in the film, pity. I am giving the maker of this film some credit because he managed to capture autumn so well on film. The shots of the corn fields, the autumn trees, the fall wind, and the dreary skies are great. Plus, Halloween is my favorite time of the year, and he captured the mood perfectly. I would tell people who are big fans of this time of the year to at least look at it for the scenery. The 2 girls lost in the field were just terrible actors, and I agree with one reviewer who said the 'screaming into the camera' part was so annoying. Yet any film taking place during fall and Halloween in a cornfield has my attention.

  3. Alright! This was just stupid. It has some dad looking for his daughters in a maze cornfield. That's basically what it shows through the whole movie. Didn't even finish it, it was that bad.

  4. 0 STAR:
For most of the first 45 minutes of this movie,it was about a father looking for his 2 little girls in a corn field. Was this the movie producers way of trying to make a movie as fast as possible? It seems that they gathered some people in a local neighborhood, including the little kids and made a cheap movie. And on top of all of this I didnt even see one scarecrow. Listen dude movie producer,a corn field cannot be scary without scarecrows!!!!! I could no longer take it anymore and I fast forward searched the rest of this boring movie and was upset that I didn't do it sooner. The first Dark Harvest movie was actually very good and it showed some scary looking scarecrows. I dodn't notice any scarecrows in this movie and I thought the cover of this dvd misleaded me. Horrible movie, not worth the $10 I paid.

  5. Bought this video at a movie store that was going out of business for around 49 cents. Not at all worth the 49 cents to watch it! My home videos of my dog, is much more entertaining. The cover has nothing to do with the film. I'm so glad it's over...I'm giving it to my sister-inlaw, which I don't really care for very much. Hopefully she will know I don't like her after she watches it.

  1. I was so delighted to see that this Robby Benson movie was at least available on VHS and that some copies were available on Amazon.

Benson would be about my age these days having come from my generation. I was equally shy and as sensitive, in his portrayals, when I was growing up and loved his work for that reason. It showed sensitive loving guys like me existed: That not all guys are jerks or don't have feelings for others, let alone can be hurt easily by the words of others when those words are unkind and not meant to help a person improve.

I've always been an empath all my life and feel what others feel, which also makes me a sensitive. Robby Benson had the same gift, but did a great job channeling it into the arts vindicating those of us who are like him, which is why I love his films, like I said.

He always showed that you can be a great warrior with your battles in life and still not sacrafice your sensitivity toward others as you strive to live in this world and pursue your dreams to make them come true.

One on One is a great simple story of one young man's battle to make his dreams real, even when he faces resistence while he works to discover himself and get "his act together". In the end, he finds himself and understands the gifts he's been given which is a great message for any teenager to see and hear. In fact, its a universal message at any age in my half a century of living.

The VHS tape cover was in great condition to my delight and surprise. The VHS quality was par for what VHS was next to all the HD quality gracing the market place today. No complaints. Nice to watch the story again. Excellent for the price. Thanks for making it available on Amazon!

I gave this a 5 because of the story even though the cinematography approach was different back when the film was made vs how things are done today. It's still a great story!

  2. I cant believe this movie isnt on dvd yet. I actually saw it in the theater and loved it, mostly because I was a basketball nut, too and played hours and hours.
I saw this recently for the first time in ages and I have to admit, I loved it. Yeah, there are some cheesy parts, some dated scenes, but it still works. The music of Seals and Crofts fits into the movie very well and I liked the performances.
Why is this film not on dvd?

  3. Synopsis: The jump from high school basketball to college ball isn't as easy as Henry Steele (Robby Benson) thought it would be. When he fails to keep up with the progress of the other players on the team Coach Moreland (G.D. Spradlin) begins to pressure Henry into renouncing his scholarship. When he refuses to quit the coach takes drastic and unethical measures to force him off the team. With the help of Janet (Annette O'Toole), his lovely tutor and potential love interest, Henry must discover whether he has the talent and determination to prove himself both on and off the basketball court.

Critique: `The still waiting for a DVD release `One On One' from '77 is an entertaining teen coming-of-age film that works for adults as well. Benson and O'Toole are terrific together and G.D. Spradlin is perfect as one of those people you absolutely love to hate. It's hard to believe this film hasn't made it to DVD format yet, somebody wake up out there!

    My Rating: -4 1/2 Stars-.

  4. OK -- I admit that I saw this move at the theater when it first came out, and I have less hair now. OK, OK, a LOT less hair. Doesn't change the fact that of thousands of movies since then, this is one of a few that has stuck in memory, and I'd like to own a copy. I'm not writing a review for those of you who think you may want to watch it, I'm writing this with the hope that someone with recording equipment and a copyright will move toward the 21st Century and make a DVD. C'mon -- I gave up VHS years ago, and if we can do Mr. T on disc, we can do this.

  5. I am 39 and I viewed this movie on TV in 1979 and found it tobe one of my favorite movies of all time.

2 comments about Harlem Double Feature: Dirty Gertie From Harlem U.S.A. (1946) / Sepia Cinderella (1947).
  1. This is an odd, but interesting entry into the "Harlem Double Feature" (early Black films from the 30s and 40s) series.

"Dirty Gertie" (directed by Spencer Williams, "Andy" of Amos & Andy who also appears in a cameo in drag as a fortuneteller) is about a wild stripper from Harlem who is on the run after two timing her boyfriend. She takes her show troupe to "Rinidad" to escape and floozies it up in grand style while down there, drawing the wrath of a local preacher. How does it end? You'll see. Pretty frank for its era, but typically poor production values that has to be overlooked to enjoy.

"Sepia Cinderella" deals with a crooner (Billy Daniels) who is seduced by an older woman who gets him ahead in showbiz. Once again, very frank for its era. The popular white actor Freddie Bartholomew makes an unusual cameo as he visits the crooner in the black nightclub. Derek Watson and his Brown Dots liven things up a bit (as they did in the abomination "Boy What a Girl"), but both films as a whole lack the high-powered vaudeville performances that are often the main redeeming features of this genre to modern audienes.

The latter is of historical interest as it is said that a very young Sidney Poitier made his debut in this film as an extra, but he is very hard to spot.

  2. Certainly the most valuable aspect of this film is the unnecessary but wondrous appearance of the John Kirby Sextet. In their only known appearance on film, we see John Kirby on bass, Billy Kyle on piano, O'Neil Spencer on drums, Charlie Shavers on trumpet, Buster Bailey on clarinet, and Russell Procope on alto saxophone. Being in a film meant that these musicians gave something above and beyond what they did in their fine recordings made between 1938 and 1942. What a delight it is to see all these musicians playing with fire, joy and intensity - in total contrast to the slowness of the plot and the sad and dull theme song which the protagonist has composed (with the help of his lover).

5 comments about My Friend Irma/My Friend Irma Goes West.
  1. MY FRIEND IRMA was a radio series in the 1940's and legendary Hollywood producer Hal Wallis thought the film version would be a great vehicle for up-and-coming talents Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. The film was so successful that in 1950 Irma went West, with Dean and Jerry along for the ride. This launched the comedy duo into stardom and before the year was out they were headlining their own film ("At War with the Army").

Although these films are not Dean or Jerry's best work(s) I am excited about this double feature because I hope more of their great films (as a team and as individuals) will be released, we still need: "Sailor Beware", "That's My Boy", "Visit to a Small Planet", "The Geisha Boy", "Some Came Running", "Rock-a-Bye Baby", and "Who's Minding the Store", "Which Way to the Front", "Hardly Working", "Cracking Up", and "Three on a Couch" on DVD.

  2. I had never seen these two films probably because Dean and Jerry are mainly supporting characters - kinda like how Abbott and Costello were in "Night in the Tropics." But even with neither of them being Irma or her friend, these two films are entertaining. Jerry and Dean get to give a glimpse of their nightclub act that made them the hottest duo working.

"Goes West" is revolutionary since it deals with television and Las Vegas. My favorite part of the film is that these folks are broke, yet in 1950, they can afford a television. And television isn't treated as an enemy of cinema in the film - although we learn that movies pay much better. Also we get a glimpse of early Vegas. The boys hang out at the Flamingo's pool. What's strange is night shots where you don't see that many lights on the Strip.

It's a shame that Paramount put this out as a single DVD - thus getting very little notice. Jerry Lewis told a crowd in Philly that Paramount was coming out with a Martin-Lewis boxset in January. He didn't give anymore details. They better get the other 13 titles out soon!

  3. My Friend Irma was an extremely popular radio show featuring the prototypical, 39-34-36, dumb blonde, brilliantly played by Marie Wilson.

The show was backed up with a strong supporting cast being the lazy shyster boyfriend, her sensible roommate, an elderly landlady who has the hots for a non-interested musician tenant.

Martin and Lewis are basically "throw ins", or comic additions created to allow a 30 minute radio show to last a movie length.

Much like a number of TV shows that were unable to adapt as movies, similar radio shows did as well.

My Friend Irma did not, including the Goes West sequel. These are quality movies.

Given that many one vintage movie dvd costs the same as two movies on one dvd, this is a true bargain in cost and content.

Just don't buy it for Martin and Lewis alone.

By the way, why does Amazon include a 'NO' in 'was this review helpful to you?'. People are only human and don't like opinions that differ from themselves. With some who are less mature, this the 'NO' makes it too easy express such displeasure.

Are they trying to discourage negative reviews, hence not purchase the CD. Such reviews only help a person in not being dissatisfied a product that received positive reviews

  4. The Good: They actually finally put out another couple of (and I use the term loosely) Martin and Lewis movies. It's interesting to watch the transition between the 2 films. In My Friend Irma, they are definitely in support. They are add on characters in an adaptation of a sit-com radio show. They don't show up until 10 minutes into the movie, and while Dean is a natural as the romantic interest (He takes to film like a duck to water. The Camera loves him), they're not quite sure what to do with Jerry. For the new Comedy Team sensation, they don't spend a lot of time together. They have a couple of funny moments (When they interact at the Juice Bar, The Donkey Serenade in the Club)but basically it's not their show. Fast forward to My Friend Irma Goes West less than a year later and it's a different story. Dean and Jerry show up within the first 5 minutes and essentially drive the movie from there on. Jerry is much more prominent and this time it's the Irma people who are the support act.

The Bad: For some reason known only to the people at Paramount, they decided to cram both these movies on one side of a disc. There are jumps and freezes, particularly in "Goes West". There appears to have been no effort at restoring or remastering the films, the balance is off so scenes are unnecessarily dark. No Extras, No Commentary, No Trailers...Nada...Zip... Zilch. Then they insist on having Corinne Calvet sing, but that's another issue...

The Funny: The Vagabond Song in My Friend Irma Goes West. It's a bit directly from the Legendary Martin and Lewis Night Club act and it gives you a great example of why they were so popular. It illustrates that with Martin and Lewis you have two comedians, but their styles are so radically different that it becomes less a comedy team and more a physical manifestation of a Manic/Depressive disorder. It's hysterical.

I just hope the studio takes a little more care with future Martin and Lewis releases. They're worth it.

PS. I actually rated this 3 stars but for some reason it's showing up as 1...This is a rating system?

  5. this is a fun light-hearted movie. I tend to care for easy going, not too complicated movies. The sense of humor is classic, not modern. This movie is clean, in humor and in inuendos. If you lean toward the classics, i do believe this one would please.

5 comments about Attack of the Killer Tomatoes - Special Collector's Edition.
  1. B movie cult clasic about just what it says, an attack of killer tomatoes!!
I guess ya just had to be there!!! LOL

  2. I don't understand most of these reviews here. The tomato wars actually happened. Pretending this was all just some lame "movie" does not bode well for the future of big business in America. Let's learn from history people, lest we be doomed to repeat it. Think!

  3. I bought this for a walk down memory lane for my husband's birthday. He saw this movie when he was a teenager, and remembered the theme song, and sings it often. Nostalgia was so much better than the movie. I really regret buying the DVD because he remembered loving the movie, but reality sunk in hard and his memories were shattered with each ridiculous scene.

So...keep your memories and save your money.

  4. This movie is great. In fact, you have to watch it several times to catch all the humor. I'm sure the movie only cost $25,000 to produce as the special effects are laughable; I'm sure it was intended that way. We've seen this movie several times and still catch things we didn't see the other times. Just a silly funny movie.

  5. The Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (AotKT) is an absolutely hilarious, cheesy, awful (in a good way) movie that makes it fun to watch. The humor comes before similarly classified "bad" movies such as Airplane, but the style works quite well. It takes a seemingly ridiculous ideas of killer tomatoes and makes it into an over-the-top adventure. Many people will probably call it stupid. I'd agree, but that's what makes the entire film hilarious to watch if you share this kind of humor.

For those trying to decide between the two editions, the "25th Anniversary" edition contains no extras, except for the trailer. I'm glad I went for the the "Special colletor's edition," because it's full of lots of good things:

-A duplicate of the original movie poster, 15" by 21"
-Commentary on the movie (with John DeBello, Steve Peace, and Costa Dillon)
-The original 8mm AotKT film (with commentary)
-The 8mm film that inspired the AotKT film
-Sing-Alongs for all of the songs in the movie
    -Deleted scenes (with commentary)
-Interviews with the cast and crew, exploring the legacy behind the movies
    -"Where are they now?" featurette
-Tomato trivia, information on props and production design

Altogether, it's a pretty nice package that fits onto one disc. I wasn't expecting the poster to be included, which I thought was a really nice touch, and even had it framed. I'd highly recommend this for any AotKT fan.

5 comments about Bull Durham.
  1. Before I begin the review, I should take time to mention that I am a huge baseball fan. I rarely miss a game, follow it as if my life depends on it, and see more baseball games at the ballyard every year than I do movies. I also played when I was younger and have worked on baseball-related projects for my alma mater.

I had heard that Bull Durham was one of the best, if not the best, baseball movies ever made. As a fan of Field of Dreams and The Natural, I decided to go and rent this one. Figuring that it was about baseball I thought I couldn't go wrong, so I didn't check the ratings on any of the sites as I normally do for a movie. Big mistake on my part there.

I couldn't even make it through a half hour of this movie. There was a little bit of baseball but nothing else worth mentioning. The entire thing was about sex, and I had to look away from the TV for some time. I was hoping it would get better but it never did, and after all the sex and foul language I stopped the movie, never bothering to finish it.

I was surprised that so many people gave this vulgar excuse for a baseball film such high ratings. Looking at the summaries of the ending of the movie, it looks as if there is some baseball action later on but the female characters, who I did not like at all, seemed to persist. Unfortunately this movie is filled with sex, and I feel that it was far too inappropriate for any release.

I'm not some kid writing this, I am a mature conservative Christian. This movie should offend anyone who believes in Him. Don't believe the hype from some of the sportswriters about this one. Go and watch a real baseball game--always a much safer bet for good clean family entertainment, plus it's very unpredictable and you never know what the results will be.

  2. I was a huge baseball fan when I worked in radio in the Kansas City area during the 70s and 80s when the Royals were a great team to watch. Part of the joy of watching them play was team leaders like George Brett and Frank White who were so passionate and honest about their love for the game, you couldn't help but enjoy watching them play. What does this have to do with a romantic comedy about minor leaguers and the absurdities of their team's misadventures in the Carolina league? Because ultimately, that's what Bull Durham is about - pure passion for baseball. You see it when Skip and Larry watch Crash Davis rant about being demoted to Class A and threaten to quit, only to turn and ask when batting practice starts. They're all hooked and no amount of misfortune or indignity will ever separate them from this game and they all know it. You see it in Annie Savoy whose passion for men and spirituality, as great as they are, are clearly second to her passion for baseball. You see it in Max Patkin, the 'Clown Prince' who joyously proclaims, "I love this game" when talking about his work in a bar. And you see them all trying to teach it to bonus baby, Nuke LaLoosh. Yes, the movie has foul language, sex, absurd pranks, and lots of other non-baseball stuff throughout. But what the movie is actually ABOUT is a pure passion for the game of baseball. And therein lies its charm. Bull Durham's essential message is this: whether you're in the bigs or in pee-wee ball, whether you get laid or not, whether you succeed or not, whether you have a crowd watching or not, the game is always there for you.

    Twice if it's a Sunday double-header.

  3. Annie Savoy (Susan Sarandon), a groupie who has affairs with a minor-league baseball player each season, meets two men, LaLoosh (Tim Robbins) and Crash (Kevin Costner), the experienced catched assigned to LaLoosh. A comical story about baseball and sex. After all, "what else is there?"

Great roles for Sarandon, Robbins and Costner. Can't imagine anyone else playing these roles. Robbins is excellent as the dim "Nuke" LaLoosh.

Even if you don't know anything about baseball (like me), this drama is still decent, enjoyable... and pretty much a classic.

  4. Bull Duram is one of the top Baseball Movies out there. But it's not just a baseball movie. The development of the love triangle between Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins and Kevin Costner gives the movie a nice story line. There is also a good bit of humor thrown into the mix. Bull Duram is a winner

  5. a fun and exiting movie. but i would'nt recommend it for the whole family because of it's rating......

5 comments about Eight Legged Freaks.
  1. In 2002 there came a film in the tail end of that year's summer blockbuster film season which took me by surprise. The movie I'm talking about is Eight-Legged Freaks. It was from Kiwi-born director Ellory Elkayem and he did a wonderful job of bringing back just a small peek at those fun 1950's giant monster and insect movies like Them! and a host of others.

The movie pretty much follows the same conventions as those old-time monster movies. It has the smart and bookish teenage boy whose love for all things spiders will come in handy as the movie moves along. Then there's the eccentric and creepy loner who collects spiders and learns that the water he has been giving them has now been tainted by toxic chemicals from a drum container that has fallen into a nearby river during transport. This river and the creek it feeds is right next to a down-and-out mining Arizona town, ironically named Prosperity. The movie wouldn't be complete without the arrival of its prodigal son, Chris McCormick (played with quite a bit of understatement by the usual over-the-top David Arquette) whose father used to own the gold mines which the town relied on for its economy.

With a reluctant hero comes the woman he left behind and pined for years ago, but now much older and with kids of her own from a previous marriage. Kari Wuhrer --- of MTV and B-movie fame --- plays Samantha Parker. McCormick's love interest who also happens to be Prosperity's current town sheriff and single mother to the aforementioned teenage boy with the thing for spiders and nubile teen daughter Ashley (played by pre-superstardom Scarlett Johansson). Then there's Wade, the town mayor whose failing Ostrich farm and unused megamall is leading him to sell the town wholesale to some nameless giant corporation.

With the basic plot set and characters introduced all hell breakloose as toxic-mutated spiders grow to giant proportions and begin to terrorize and devour the townspeople. At first, it's isolated attacks until their numbers grown in size and they attack the town itself en masse. This may be a B-movie but it sure had great CGI-effects when it came to the giant arachnids and how they behaved on the screen. The many different types of giant spiders ended up having distinct personalities to distinguish themselves from each other. From the tank-like tarantula to the agile Jumping Spiders and the cunning trapdoor spiders. In fact, these spiders were also given some sort of voice which sounded like chipmunks on helium as they screeched, yipped and screamed their way around the screen.

Eight-Legged Freaks is not something great to write mom home about, but it is a fun movie to sit through, especially one full of teenagers who seem to scream and shout the loudest. This is a type of movie that actually needs a rowdy audience to really entertain. There's really no need to follow the dialogue since most of it is quite forgettable. The action on the screen from the giant spiders chasing motocross-riding teens and their attack on the townspeople at the megamall does well without the need of extraneous dialogue.

Ellory Elkayem did a great job in making Eight-Legged Freaks not just a fun movie but also a throwback to the 50's monster movies that we see now on syndication. This movie showed Elkayem had great potential as a genre filmmaker. It's a shame he had to follow up Eight-Legged Freaks with two very awful and forgettable sequels to the Return of the Living Dead franchise. I'm still hoping that he can rebound from that double-debacle and make more fun monster movies.

  2. Hands down, this is the best spider movie out there to this day. Its funny, sometimes scray, and action pack, and along for the ride are terrific special effects. Believe or not, the spiders 'talk'. Well, they don't really talk, all they really make are squeaky voices, which are supposed to be their 'talking' voice. Anyway, the film doesn't take its self seriously. And thank god it doesn't. If it had, it would have sucked balls. Check this creature feature, you won't be disapponted.

PS: I'm over 13, but I figured this was easier. Oh and by the way, I'm beggining to write the sequel.

    MR.JAWSBITEME
    Wish me luck!

  3. This movie is so intense and pulse pounding I almost cried. It is filled with suspense and horror scenes that you will have nightmares for nights. When I saw the spider in the pop-tent, I threw my shoes across the theater in glee.

  4. Creepy, fun, edge-of-the-seat movie that I would never part with! I've watched it several times already. This movie made me fond of David Arquette, who I couldn't stand before I saw this movie. The characters are fun and endearing, and I love when David yells the title line of the movie out! Funny every time. Buy it if you like good, clean spookiness. It's a must have!

  5. I would have given this 4 stars for the witty script, excellent cast and marvelous visual effects -- hell, I grew up watching Big Bug movies, and this would have been an excellent example except for the dopy cartoon voices dubbed onto the giant spiders by Frank Welker. Welker's a very talented guy, but his contribution here works to the movie's detriment. The fault is directly traceable to the director, whose New Zealand giant-spider short film LARGER THAN LIFE suffered from the same defect. Obviously, he wants his giant spiders to sound like the Goofy Gophers sucking on helium, probably to keep them from being TOO scary. But that hurts the film. It's got plenty of comedy in the dialogue and characters. If the monsters are goofballs, you've got zero suspense. Despite the powerful visual presence of the giant spiders, they just sound plain ANNOYING with those stupid giggling sound effects! I still give the movie 2 stars because every factor except the dumb spider voices was right on target.

    Better luck next time, guys.

5 comments about End of the Line.
  1. End of the line opened in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1987 with Wilford Brimley heading an All Star cast: Kevin Bacon, Levon Helm, et. al. I can not believe that this movie was put on film. The Director, Jay Russell, was filming his first feature film. The reason this movie was made in and around Little Rock Arkansas was because of the Director and Mary Steenbergon. Both are from Arkansas. It is a horrible story, with an awesome cast. I do not know the politics of movie making, and I don't want to....this movie stinks.

  2. The picture quality is the worst I have seen yet on a DVD. It is worse then a fifth generation VHS. The image is so bad that I don't know why they bothered releasing the DVD.

  3. This was a very good movie if your into train movies. Although if you know your stuff about railroads you'll find that it has a lot of Hollywood in it. It did have a lot of good railroad shots in it.

  4. I believe Wilford Brimley is a great actor because he seems to just be himself. He plays a brakeman on the "Southland Railroad". The railroad is being reorganized and the small town he lives in will be devastated so some rich folks in Chicago can roll in more "dough". He and another worker take a locomotive to Chicago to try and convince the "powers that be" to think twice about the reorganization. Instead the company clones try to use them in an advertising campaign to make the changes go smoother. Brimley won't have it. You watch the rest. You have the sad and inevitable conflict of young and old, rich and poor played out in the heartland. Great film.

  5. This a great "feel good" film. This film isn't often remembered, but is one that will bring a smile to your face. Wilford Brimley is terrific.

  1. Bill Holt (John Miljan) is a famous detective. He is on vacation and borrowing a house on Glen Athol. He is invited and practically forced to go to a party in the mansion next door. A wickedly flirtatious girl Muriel Randel (Iris Adrian) tells him of all the skeletons in everyone's closet. She seems to be some sort of scamp that uses everyone including the detective. It seems to be an early night as the detective goes home to finish a book he is writing. The scamp is exhausted and goes to bead early. All is well.

Bang! Bang! Shots heard. That night the butler mistakes a nephew (guest) of being a burglar and shoots him. Soon other bodies are found and the simple minded police pin it on the nephew. Our detective without overtly playing his hand must find out the truth.

Be sure to concentrate on the first 10 minute introduction of the characters or you will get lost in the shuffle.

Watching many detective movies it is not hard to guess the whole story as it is thinly masked and hurried at 69 minutes. However it is fun to watch the story unfold before our eyes and a rather refreshing but not unique conclusion.

The film has the feel that we are coming in in the middle of a series. However there is no reference to a book or any other movie either this character. The Writer of the screen play, John W. Krafft, has a string of credits to his name for many other movies and TV series.
