  1. UK born Toby Russel is considered an expert on HK cinema even in HK itself and his knowledge is put to great use in the documentaries he produces like this one and the "Top Fighter" series (recommended). Although fairly cheaply produced this doc contains many interesting clips and interviews with the stars from the famous to the not so famous. If yoy're interested in learning more about HK cinema then this is recommended and be sure to also check out the "Top Fighter" tapes as well.

  1. I found this movie in the bargain bin and got it on DVD for (money)- at that I was ripped off! Cynthia Rothrock plays only a minor role in this "Golden Boy" rip-off (although probably it predates that movie). The fight scenes are no better than average and the dubbing diabolical. I can think of no reason that would pursuade me to part with nearly (dollar amount) for this fiasco!

  2. This is a comedy NOT a drama. It is the funniest movie to ever come out of China and is on my personal Top Ten List of funniest movies of all times. This movie is best watched with a really good buzz! Im serious this movie is funyy with a capital F.

  1. Starts off real good, youre getting to think youll see allot of sumo, but theres only one really good fight (with yuen biao!)and the movie as a whole isnt very much. Whang jang lee (the worlds best& fastet kicker) is totally wasted. nice performence,as allways,by Norton. Rothrock-I hate, but shes doing fine, and offcourse theres yuen biao-my personal god.

  2. I bought this tape thinking that I was going to see a lot of Yukari Oshima as a ninja, but she only had about 2 minutes of screen time. I thought the Japanese trio were cool and reminded me of the characters from the "Wrath of the Ninja" Anime. Down points were too many characters and a lousy plot. Some of the highlights were some of the comedy, Yukari Oshima's anime-ish ninja outfit, and the cameo character appearance of Wong Fei Hung as a kid.

  3. This 1987 Hong Kong production is easily one of Sammo Hung's most enjoyable and spectacular directorial efforts. It's got the all-star, non-stop action, farcical comedy approach of the epic Hollywood comedy IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD. Sammo plays a man who brings his bevy of prostitutes to a remote railroad town and sets up a hotel. He arranges for a train accident to stop the Shanghai Express and force its passengers to stay in town and pay for the hospitality of his establishment. Meanwhile, a large bandit gang on horseback is headed for the town to rob the passengers. There are lots of little subplots leading up to a series of all-out martial arts brawls between the townsmen, passengers and bandits that spread through the entire town (constructed for the film in Thailand).

The cast is a who's who of Hong Kong movie stars, with Jackie Chan's buddies, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao, heading the cast, followed by such other HK stars as Jimmy Wang Yu (as the father of Wong Fei Hung!); Shih Kien (the lead villain from ENTER THE DRAGON); HK mainstays Yuen Wah, Wu Ma, Richard Ng, Dick Wei, and comedy star Eric Tsang; Japanese stars Yasuaki Kurata and Yukari Oshima; American martial artist Cynthia Rothrock, in her first HK film (she gets to fight Sammo); and Australian martial artist Richard Norton. The latter two wear American civil war costumes! (Jackie Chan's refusal to join the cast caused a rift between him and Sammo.) This is Hong Kong cinema at its entertaining best. Unlike most U.S. action film directors, Sammo Hung is equally adept at comedy and action.

  4. This movie is riddled with poor voice acting, bad camera work, terrible special effects, and it all adds up to the funniest movie ever made!! The music is so cliched it's laughably bad and the voices, while poorly done, are full of character(one guy even sounds homosexual). The intentional humor in this movie doesn't stand a chance against the blatant showing of a low budget masterpeice.

  5. Sammo really goes all out on this one. There is a train coming through town and Sammo plans on halting the passengers trip so that they will visit their town and they can profit. He will do this by any means necessary keeping his brothel's profits that could be made in mind all the time. While this isn't one of Sammo's best comedies it is still very good. Eric Tsang always bugs me but thankfully we get literally ALL of the stars that Sammo worked with throughout the 80's. I think the only ones that were missing were Billy Chow who wasn't discovered by Sammo just yet and Jackie Chan. With all of their problems I can imagine Jackie wasn't in this because of some sort of feud. I could name all of the side characters like Lam Ching Ying, Yuen Wah, and Chin Kar Lok but your mind would be completely blown. we find out early on that Yuen Biao is going to have a starring role which is never a bad thing.

When Sammo blown the train tracks and completes his plan, bandits show up to rob the train passengers. On board guarding China's national treasure(a book) are Japanese masters Yusuaki Kuratu, Hwang Jang Lee, Yukari Oshima. Also making hilarious cameos are Sheh Kien and Jimmy Wang Yu. Richard Ng is on hand for the comedy as is Lau Kar Wing and Lung Wei Wang shows up for a funny fight with Hoi Meng and Hsou Ho though Lung Wei is of course as serious as ever. The best thing about this movie are the dream matchups. Yusuaki Kuratu vs. Richard Norton is OK, Yuen Baio vs. Dick Wei is great, and Sammo Hung vs. Cynthia Rothrick is why I watch these movies. I could have used more action but when Sammo brings it, everybody in the world beware!

The Universal Laser and Media version is letterboxed with a good subtitling job keeping the words in the black bars for the most part. I would still like to see a special edition of this though. Does anyone know if there is one, maybe by Hong Kong Legends?

  1. I watched this after watching Royal Warriors (aka In the Line of Duty II, also with Michelle Yeoh) and this film was great as well. Yes, Madam(aka In the Line of Duty or Police Assassins) is about two top police women from their respective countries teaming up to retrieve a micro film which is evidence to put away some mob guy. Well, he's a bad guy with a lot of bodyguards and thats all you need to know. As the ...reviewer said, this is sort of like Rush Hour in reverse. The fighting is ever so awesome and brutal, I cringed several times during this one. Cynthia Rothrock shows a lot of her best stuff here, and Michelle is awesome as usual. .... The last fighting scenes are just magical with great production by Sammo Hung; plenty of crazy kick stunts and flips. However, the dvd isnt the greatest sound wise. It seems some of the sound effects were toned down, and the supposed 5.1 dolby isn't very noticable at all. If you got a Region 2 dvd player w/ PAL converter, then get Hong Kong Legends version which is under the name Police Assassins, I believe the sound was redone and the picture quality is second to none. Tsiu Hark and Sammo both make humorous guest appearances in the film as well. If you liked Royal Warriors, you'll love this and besides, its the prequel to Royal. I believe any martial arts fan will be impressed by this one. Check out Michelles other greats such as Wing Chun, Royal Warriors, CTHD (Crouching Tiger...duh), Magnificent Warriors. The only other Cynthia Rothrock movie that I could safely recommend is Righting Wrongs which is totally awesome. I would definitely recommend a buy with all these titles including Yes, Madam...check it out...hope this and my other HK flicks reviews are helpful.

  2. This is a bad movie. All scenes are funny and stupid. I do not like that kind of Chinese joke in this film. It is dirty and does not make any sense. I regreted to buy it.

  3. It is bad movie. Most of sences are joke stupidly and non-sense. At the beginning of the film indicated a dirty kind of joke that is usually see in Asian movies. It is very cheap joke for low class audiences.

  4. this was a fun movie michelle yeoh is in it, that's all that matters. i just wished that they would stop with the subtitles and dub it in english for region 1 viewers.

  5. Now some people may have been seriously injured on this film. There are scenes where a stuntman will fall HARD. I am talking about his head bouncing off of the ground a couple of times!

So the story in this movie is pretty bad, but the girly humor between Rothrick and Yeoh is as bad as it gets. Yeoh isn't so bad but Cynthia Rothrick is truly hard to watch. But then she gets to fighting and it is all good. She is nowhere near the level of performer as evrybody else in the movie but she is definitely one of the top American woman kung fu stars ever.

So Michelle has one of the best stunts ever and their are a few more in the movie to match that. While the story is really really bad, the final fight is a lot of fun. Dick Wei(Project A) has always been a good screen fighter and Chung Fat shows up as this really stupid character but he can also fight really well. So as long as you don't go into this expecting a gripping movie you should be OK. Not a ton of fights but the end I had to watch a couple of times. Good outing for Michelle Yeoh's first time doing action on screen.

  1. I feel sorry for everyone slammin' on this movie. It wasn't that bad.

  2. A thrill-a-minute, non-stop action adventure with a kick, Outside the Law delivers exactly what it propounds to -- a great action movie with solid acting. Director Jorge Montesi is on top with this one, leading a first-rate cast. Cynthia Rothrock delivers some intense martial action, while Seamus Dever and Jeff Wincott add heavy weight to an outstanding performance. Particularly interesting is the chemistry between Rothrock and Dever. A must see.

  3. I'm a sucker for martial arts films...I watch them and I'm rarely satisfied. Normally, I can expect to be somewhat entertianed by a Rothrock film, even if it is just watching her kick some butt. This movie, however, has very little butt kicking and a lot of bad acting and direction. This 90 minute film feels like it is two hours long. It has been a long time since Rothrock has done anything worth watching...but I watch her next video anyway, hoping for the glory days of "Righting Wrongs" and "Dragon Lady."

  4. I couldn't agree more, I think this movie should have more butt kicking then action. It really bites, but I guess I'll go with other movies that Rothrock has been in.

  5. The stunts in this film are kick-ass. I love the action.

  1. Even if you don't think your time is valuable, it would be better spent and enjoyed if you stared at the off-white wall in your bedroom. At least your wall has texture. This movie is total trash. A big waste. And the martial arts, if you can call them that, are a joke.

  2. A good Martial Arts B movie. This is one of my Bolo Yeung Favorites, he is just dirty in this flick. Both 1 & 2 are good, 1 is better. Why is Tiger Claws 1 not on DVD but 2&3 are? I don't know what they are thinking but I like to see my movies in order! Wait for part one on DVD First(on Widscreen) before buying two.
    Nuff said!

  3. I'll start off by being honest and saying I have not seen part 1 yet. There were some clips at the beginning of this film from part 1, and they looked somewhat decent...mostly the Bolo Young character in some fight scenes. At first I was not expecting much from this movie, and really bought it cause it had one of my favorite B-movie martial arts villains, Bolo Young. I realized that the overall cast list was pretty good, consisting of Bolo, Jalal Merhi, Cynthia Rothrock, Eric Lee, Evan Lurie, and Ong Soo Han. There are even plenty of other extra guys, with great physicall build and abilities for the martial arts tournament in the film. I was prepared for some great fights among some great movie martial artists.

Most of the movie has a pretty good feel to it, and I think the music helps a lot - it almost sound like similar music used in Terminator 3. Pacing was good and I actually never realized that there wasn't too much action taking place. By the end of the film I longed for the action, and was pleased to see there was a tournament. The fights were short though, and only a few were decent. Bolo gets to fight too, but only in a couple of very short fights. The biggest dissapointment was the use of Ong Soo Han and Eric Lee, yet without little to no fighting from the 2 and both usually have excellent fights in most of their movies. Ong Soo Han's character's fate was a huge disappointment. The other big dissapointment was the finale with Bolo - I was hoping for a great fight scene with him and Jalal or Cynthia - didn't happen. He uses a few seconds of Tiger Claws on some guys, but its pretty stupid when each time he executes, the sound of a roaring tiger follows.

The plus is the final fights between the Cynthia Rothrock charcater and a couple of bad guys, and the Jalal Merhi charcater vs the bad guy character played by Evan Lurie, which ended up being the best fight of the movie - more evenly matched and longer.

Tiger Claws 2 ends up being average overall. The decent list of characters should have provided an extremely great action movie, but the best guys don't get to fight much. Hopefully Tiger Claws 3 will have a great fight with Bolo...oh wait he isn't in part 3....major doh!
