  1. If you want to watch a movie and see how to be "cool" under intense situations...then you must watch this movie and take lots of notes. You will see Chow Yun-Fat reprise his role as "The God Of Gamblers" and you will wonder how can one actor be soooooooooo cool (especially the scene when he encounters the person that killed his wife). Ng Sin Lin is so pretty even though she plays a common looking female in it. Chingmy Yau is fine as always...especially with all the plastic surgery she's had. Whatever you do...avoid the other God Of Gamblers movies (the one without Chow Yun-Fat)...those movies suck. But what makes the movie is Chow Yun-Fat. One quote says it all, "Chow Yun-Fat is the coolest actor in the world."

  2. This Saga is to Chinese people what Stars Wars was to Sci-fi nerds. Chow Yun Fat is so cool in this movie and I personally believe that everybody will simply adore Mr. Chow for his graceful charms and his rasor sharp guile. Ask any Chinese kid and they will tell you"this movie is a must" also If you have time and you like Kung fu ,movies... YOU MUST see Drunken Punch 2 with Jackie Chan . This is the best Kung Fu Movie EVER!!!!

  3. I've always been a hard-rock fan of the God Of Gamblers series. The original movie shot the coolest actor to fame all around the world spurned lots of other copycats. Stephen Chow was the Saint of Gamblers on his own, then in GoG 2, he met Knight Of Gamblers Andy Lau (Knife Chan) and became the God's disciple. In GoG Return, there was one extrememly memorable line...when the God said to Long Wu, "Knife and Sing are famous now, I'm so happy to know that." Well, I was even happier when I heard that because though this movie does not show the 2 disciples, at least they are mentioned by their master to keep the sentimental charm of the 1st 2 movies intact!=) This movie reveals the more "cheeky" side of the respectable God (remember the scene where he cut off the whirling cloth the stupid officer was holding?). I especially LOVED the part where he acted as Andy Lau, his own disciple! When Ng Sin Lin asked him to sit on the bed and face his back towards her, man....he was so charming with his forehead resting on his hand from the back view!! The whole plot of this movie is a clever one, where the God set his revenge plan exactly for 1 year, due to the last promise of his wife. At the final confrontation, he once again beats his opponent effortlessly (his acting IN THE SHOW itself indeed earns him the title as the reigning God Of Gamblers e.g pretending to sweat in fear...have that losing look on his face...etc), and shows everyone how he did it. A clever plot that starts off with a good bang and ends with a cunning joyful twist that leaves Chow leaving the gambling arena triumphant. A MUST for ALL fans of GoG.

By the way, I've created a mini-poster on the whole GoG series, where I've put images from all my GoG collection together. Awesome! If U want this poster, contact me.

  4. Although I'll be assassinated for writing this (as others gave it such a good review), this was truly a poor film. Chow Yun-Fat deserved a better vehicle to bring back the legendary figure of Ko San. Wong Jing again shows his aptitude filling films with his usual crass comedy. It's sad to think that 'The Boss Of Dross' made such films as Last Hero In China and of course the original. Basically, if Wong Jing had released his holiday snaps under this title it still would have cleaned up at the box-office.

  5. I think this movie is way worse than the original. But it is not Chow's fault. The only reason I give it a three is because Chow is in it, and he is as good as ever. Really, his bad movies are usually not his fault. It was always either the translation, the directing, or the plot that make some of his movies bad. I don't think he wanted to do a sequel, and that is why it took him many years to finally do it. The problem lies in the director, who thought he could make more money by making a sequel. He did exactly that, but he also messed up a perfect story. The jokes were stupid and the story itself was also stupid, unlike the original masterpiece.

  1. one of the main reasons I wanted to watch this movie was because brigitte lin and chow yun fat were in it together. something that you dont see much of. both of whom are excellent actress and actor. knowing this I expected nothing but the best. and this is what I bought.

this movie is about two lovers who lived 2000 years ago during the Qin Dynasty, and 2000 years later find each other again, being drawn to each other, by way of visions from their pasts. this is a tragic love story that justs mesmerizes you to the screen. now i am not much of a love story person, I go for the high action movies. but this one movie, dream lovers, I would recommend to anyone, especially those who like a good love story movie.

  2. This story has brought out a lot of depth in life. For example, if a couple have been in love for 2000 years, does it mean they have the right to discard the relationship they were in prior to their "meeting" in this life? Even if it is truly important to continue a 2000 years love, shouldn't the couple be more considerate to the feeling of the people surrounding them? I believed that taking it slow is the key to successfully bring the 2000 years couple back together, with minimum amount of hurt brought to the people surrounding them. This is a great story. I would have given it a 5 stars if Chow Yun Fat and Brigitte Lin can bring out the struggling and the contradiction of their wants and what is right to do. However, I didn't see too much of that in this movie. So, I decide to give it a 3 stars.

  3. The legendary Chow Yuen Fatt is paired with Hong Kong's once beloved all-time actress Lin Ching Hsia.

This is a movie that tells us that love is love, regardless the time, the time span and the players involved. Love is hard, the first time and given a chance, harder the second round.

Chow plays a modern day concert conductor and Lin, the alluring artifact expert of sort. They both dreamed about each other. They eventually know they were tragic lovers from their past lives.

She, the obedient wife of a Qin dynasty architect (sentenced to death) in the previous life obeyed and died with her beloved husband.

Now they are reborned as mortals, as Chow's character from previous life wanted it to be "I prefer flesh and blood". Starting over in a modern day presents a different problem that is equally tragic: there is another player in this love affair, Chow has a lover.

The questions put forth is simple: What you did for love once, would you do it again, had you the opportunity? Time has changed us, no two people can remain the same. Love transforms us, but it is time that eventually changes us. Chow and Lin portray sensitively the couple trying to understand and become the lovers they once were.

Dream Lovers asks what we should forsake for love, or might be love, or even a dream of what love could be, versus what we should hang on to, and at what price.

This is a layered movie, with visually stunning sets, although the artwork seemed a bit conscious and contrived.

Chow is flawless and Lin engaging, relentlessly stoic and vulnerable at the same time.

Don't miss this one. It goes straight for the heart.

  4. ...but if you like an intelligent, artful, thoughtful, and (unthinkable if this were to be re-made by Hollywood) profoundly rewarding cinematic romance, this is the film for you. So what if the attire and sets are a bit 1980ish? Unlike forgettable Hollywood knockoffs, Tony Au's background in costume and set design-- much like Zhang Yimou at his best-- reminds the viewer throughout the film just how powerful color, sound, and imagery can be. The star-crossed lovers theme, echoed over 20 centuries, gives the film a transcendence seldom found in any "romance." Aside from a rather pathetic attempt to mimic a young Leonard Bernstein on the podium, Yun-Fat Chow gives one of the most nuanced performances of his career (and demonstrates that he doesn't have to just pull a trigger and crack wise to convey screen persona). Brigitte Lin is stunning as Yuet-Heung, Chow's centuries-lost lover reincarnated. And Cher Yeung gives what I hope was an award-winning performance at *some* film festival *somewhere* as Chow's girlfriend of 8 years who suddenly finds herself supplanted by a 20 century-long "dream" of love. Her visceral emotional pain is at the core of this film, and her final sequence is perhaps one of the most devastating portrayals captured on celluloid within this genre. "Eight years or two thousand...it's still love": that line itself captures the simplicity as well as the uncompromising profundity of the film. Well worth the price of your purchase, whatever that may be.

  5. Great movie but talk about price gouging - 50 bucks for a dvd! That's totally ridiculous and without any extra features! I'm going to pass on some valuable info to my fellow Hong Kong movie buffs. Do yourselves a favor and visit www.Goodwillco.com - they are a terrific Canadian distributor of original HK version dvds. "Dream Lovers" is only about $7-$8 USD. Most of their HK titles fall within this price range. "Hero" now at theatres starring Jet Li, Maggie Cheung, Tony Leung is also available for this price. Their service is outstanding. You can pretty much find any title at their website with original Mandarin/Chinese audio and subtitled. Don't buy any American studio dubbed or edited versions. Boycott Disney and their subsidiaries such as Miramax/Dimension films until they show respect for Asian cinema. They are buying HK catalog titles and butchering by editing and English dubbing. Disney is also purchasing HK titles to keep in storage without release. By doing so, Disney can keep the original studios from releasing these titles and have a monopoly on the catalog. Talk about DisNazi tactics! Visit the Web Alliance for the Respectful Treatment of Asian Cinema to sign the petition to Miramax. Over 13,000 signatures have been collected.

  1. I first got interested in Woo's work after seeing "Broken Arrow" in 1996. I was able to get my hands on a VHS copy of The Kiiler and watched it thinking it would be at least as food as Broken Arrow.

    It wasn't.

    It was ten times better.

The plot is similar to the Rock Hudson film Magnificent Obsession (although Rock is not an assassin). Chow-Yun Fat is an amazing actor who portrays the title character with great depth and believability.

But let's get down to why everyone REALLY likes this film: The action scenes are AMAZING. When the shooting starts, all hell breaks loose and you'll probably have to watch the scenes in slo-mo or rewind and watch them again. There is so much going on that it's hard to beleive that anyone would be able to choreograph and film such stylistic and hectic battle scenes, but John Woo does just that.

My biggest question is, why aren't Woo's Hollywood films just as wild and stylish. Woo's Hollywood work is very good, but why are his Hong Kong features so much better? They seem to be gritty and real whereas his Hollywood features seem to be glossy and watered down.

No matter. If you like action films, this is one of the best, but be warned. This film is VIOLENT and much of the violence is very graphic, so it's not for everyone.

Also, sometimes the dialogue seems a bit hammy, but I feel that it may be because of the loss of translation when the film was dubbed in English. If you're able to, watch the original Chinese version with English subtitles. I know it's heard to read while your trying to watch the action, so watch the dubbed version a couple of time to where you pretty much know what's happening and then watch it with the subtitles. The original actors' voices convey much more emotion and intensity.

  2. John Woo:you either love him or hate him but there is no way of looking at him except as a force of nature. The Killer was one of Woo's greatest Hong Kong features; long before he came to America and made films such as Face/Off and Mission Impossible 2.

Made on a small budget this film is an homage to the classic action directors of Hollywood. There are shades of Peckenpah and of Scorsese. The films grainy look makes it almost perfect for this genre.

The story of a killer with a penchant for justice and loyalty has been done many times before but Chow Yun Fat and Danny Lee make it their own as the killer and the renegade cop who follows him.

Many have complained about the violence in this film. The film is extremely violent but the violence comes off as campy rather than as serious. When you have two men fighting hundreds it is hard to take anything too seriously.

The disc that I reviewed was the Criterion Collection edition. This edition gives a pristine transfer of the film and has a decently subtitled audio. Beware of editions that have any English dubbing since these editions tend to heighten the camp elements of the story rather than give a true translation of the dialogue. Also note that the Criterion Edition is expensive but you get what you pay for. Some of the lower priced editions of this film are known bootlegs that should be avoided.

The disc contains a commentary track by Woo and producer Terrance Chang and five deleted scenes.

If you can find or afford it this is essential viewing for action genre fans and for fans of purist Hong Kong cinema.

  3. I can't even count how many times I've watched this movie. The action is great, but it's the storyline that just blows me away. It's one of my favorite movies of all-time and I totally recommend this to anyone and everyone. If you haven't seen it, make it a priority to check it out at your earliest convenience. I've seen thousands upon thousands of movies and this one definitely sticks out as a killer. ;)

  4. I found this movie absolutely horrible--overloaded with gratuitous violence, violence for violence sake. It's for people who enjoy watching people murder people. There were no real characters in this monstrousity of a movie--only killing machine people. No one, that's right, no one was believable. Even the so-called story line--a hitman killing to raise money to enable a blind woman, whom the hitman accidentally blinded, to see, was a farce. Movies like this only raise the potential level of violence in society, make it glorifiable, without the slightest redeeming virtue. This piece of junk is strictly for the serial killer who's looking for inspiration for his next hit. I trashed my copy--I wouldn't even give it to charity because of what it stands for. Do yourself a favor--don't buy terrible heap of garbage!!!!!

  5. John Woo is a director who uses a style known as Heroic Bloodshed. The messages of the movies are always in the symbols, not in the story. The movie isn't designed for those who can't look past the violence. The movies are also heavily laced with Protestant Christian themes concerning the souls of his characters, usually exagerrated for the purpose of making them larger than life. For Example: Inspector Tequila in Hard Boiled. He kills, yes. He kills a lot. But the overall message is not the violence, it's that the hero has to do what must be done, that he values the righting of wrongs done to a weaker character. You have to read into Woo films before you can say that they are "Garbage", because if you understand him, they're really not. I'm sorry more people can't enjoy his movies, but sometimes you need to look past the attitude that violence is never the answer. While killing is bad, being dead and allowing others who are above the law (a problem almost alien to the modern Western World) to exploit those who can't help themselves is worse.

  1. I saw this film in the theatre on a Chow yun fat film festival. I found the film very amateureshly written. I know action films suspend belief, but this was ridiculous (a woman gets shot in the head, but dosen't die for about 7 minutes, chow recieves over 30 bullet hits in the filnale, but survives.) The story itself was intriguing, but the gun battles were ver outlandish, and out of place (shing fui on's demise is particularly laughable). I can take many stupid violent films of the eighties (AMerican" Lethal Weapon, HK: Tiger on beat), but this one goes too far. It should have stuck with it's story, and not tried try solely to live up to the better tomorrow body count. Danny Lee has a particularly good cameo.
